Ixcateco Grill

Permanently Closed

"Ixcateco Grill, Albany Park. Upscale, authentic Southern Mexican food in a casual BYOB atmosphere by an ex- Topolobampo chef and Rick Bayless protégé? Count us in. Chef Anselmo Ramirez opened Ixcateco in 2015 using locally sourced organic or sustainably raised ingredients resulting in a seasonally changing menu. Moles are the specialties here and the Pollo En Mole Negro is one of our favorites. Great vegetarian options as well and also open for brunch on the weekends."

Ronan (George) Park

Park · Albany Park

"Ronan Park, Albany Park. Ronan Park was recently restored in 2002 and now includes a nature walk along the North Branch of the Chicago River as well as a multi-ethnic Sculpture Park and Healing Garden. The park features a rotating schedule of sculptures and live performances throughout the year."

"Semiramis Lebanese Cuisine, Albany Park. If a BYOB restaurant and the best falafel in the area is what you’re looking for—look no further. This Lebanese eatery serves up the freshest (made from scratch daily) lamb, beef, and chicken chawarmas, as well as plenty of vegetarian options like falafel wraps, baba ghannouj, tabbouleh and hummus. Check out their episode on the Emmy-award winning show *Check, Please!* for even more reasons to visit."

West River Cafe

Breakfast restaurant · Albany Park

"West River Cafe, Albany Park. West River is one of the only diners in the area so when you need that 2x4 (2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 2 pancakes) this is the place to go. Open from 6a-3p every day means you can come back for lunch as well. Check out the gyro—the Greek owners know their stuff."

Albany Park Theater Project

Performing arts theater · Albany Park

"Albany Park Theater Project, Albany Park. Founded in 1997, APTP is one of the treasures of Albany Park. A multi-ethnic, youth theater ensemble, the actors are made up entirely of local high school students. Their critically acclaimed performances have become one of the hottest theater tickets in town. In addition to on-stage work, APTP also provides a tutoring and college access/success program for all ensemble members."

Angelo's Wine Bar

Wine bar · Albany Park

"Angelo's Wine Bar, Albany Park. A dine-in and delivery pizza parlor since the 60s, Angelo’s was recently completely renovated and now offers upscale, “refined rustic” Italian food for dinner and weekend brunch. With large windows open in the summer it’s perfect for an after-work Manhattan or three. Bonus: instead of sports the flat screens show classic black and white Italian films."

3821 W Montrose Ave

Building · Albany Park

"Finch Beer Co. & Kitchen, Albany Park. You can’t miss this place if you’re driving by. And once inside you won’t want to leave. With a truly stunning interior and exclusive beers you can’t find anywhere else, the Finch Beer Co.’s official brewpub is a site to behold. A towering neon bird, exposed timber beams, and walls covered in salvaged barn wood, as well as a nice view of the brewery next door, makes this a memorable stop on Montrose Ave. Also, thanks to chef Matthias Merge, the menu is made up of mostly handcrafted sausages. Beers, sausages, Chicago."

First Slice

Cafe · Ravenswood Manor

"First Slice, Albany Park. This non-profit bakery/cafe is an offshoot of the original located in the Lillstreet Art Center in Ravenswood. Like the original, this place is known for their homemade pies—like the Chocolate Peanut Butter and Michigan Sour Cherry—and their organic, locally-sourced sandwiches and salads are great as well. And to top it all off, eating here directly funds the First Slice soup kitchen that serves thousands of meals each month to the homeless and needy."

Golden Crust Pizza and Tap

Pizza restaurant · Albany Park

"Golden Crust Pizza and Tap, Albany Park. No-frills neighborhood pizza how it should be. This place has been around for 45 years so they know what they’re doing. It’s an official Blackhawks bar with a beer garden, 40 beers on tap, the best pizza in the area, and a Mortal Kombat arcade machine. Done."

"Nighthawk Coffee Bar & Tavern, Albany Park. Across from the Kimball brown line stop, this cozy storefront offers two of the best things—coffee and booze. Open from 6am-2am, start your day with a La Colombe nitro cold brew on tap and finish it with a craft cocktail like a Ramos Fizz or Pure Black Negroni."

Rocky's Tacos

Permanently Closed

"Rocky's Tacos, Albany Park. We’re not sure why it’s called Rocky’s Tacos and not Rocky’s Tortas because their “Super Tortas Futboleras” are the reason to visit this soccer-themed restaurant. With over 78 different versions of the Mexican sandwich and consistently fresh bread, this is like the torta mecca. Pro tip: Get the pico de gayo that comes with ham and if you go in after 5p during the week there’s a good chance you’ll be ordering from Rocky himself."

mana digital dive

Permanently Closed

"Mana Digital Dive, Albany Park. A gaming lounge and internet center, this place is stacked with 24 gaming computers, multiple Playstation 4s hooked up to 60” monitors, 3D printers and Virtual Reality goggles to test out. You can even rent out retro consoles like Nintendo 64s and they have Smash Brothers tournaments here every Saturday. Skip the snack stand here and go across the street to Susie’s Drive Thru for your late-night gaming hunger."

Brasa Roja Montrose

Colombian restaurant · Albany Park

"Brasa Roja, Albany Park. Colombian-style cuisine is the name of the game here and one of the more authentic settings you’ll find in the area. Named by TimeOut Chicago as one of the best “Cheap Eats” in the entire city, you can walk out with a rotisserie half-chicken dinner with potatoes, cornmeal arepa and fried plantains for under $8."

Susie's Drive-Thru

Permanently Closed

"Susie's Drive-Thru, Albany Park. Hotdog stands are rare in these parts but Susie’s is worth the trip. Voted one of “America’s 10 Best French Fries” by Food Network Magazine, check out the “Footsie Footsie”, a foot-long polish sausage on a sesame seed bun with double grilled onions and mustard. Or grab one of their famous shakes that come in 65 different flavors (how is that possible?). Open 24 hours."

Noon O Kabab

Persian restaurant · Albany Park

"Noon O Kabab, Albany Park. Albany Park’s authentic Persian cuisine can be found at Noon O Kabab, a family-owned restaurant (and take-out kitchen) operating since 1997. Their kabab plates are what they’re known for but we recommend the monster wraps—falafel, joujeh, and koubideh—that are listed on the menu “with Persianality”. We’re not sure what that is but we’re believers."

Global Gardens

Community garden · Albany Park

"Global Gardens Community Garden and Refugee Training Farm, Albany Park. Global Gardens’ ongoing purpose is to provide access to fruits and vegetables to refugee families and the surrounding community."

Templestowe Pub Chicago

Check out the field house for gymnastics, ballet, woodworking, pottery and sign language classes. And don’t miss movies/concerts in the park during the summer."

The Neo-Futurists

Performing arts group · Ravenswood

"The Neo-Futurists, Andersonville. Every weekend the Neo-Futurists throw 30 plays at an audience in 60 minutes and see what sticks. Via primetime shows, classes, creative labs, and the seminal show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, the experimental theater company has been shaking up Chicago in the for over 25 years. From the deeply personal to the politically satirical, there’s no subject matter the Neo-Futurists won’t tear into. The Neos write, perform, and live by a few simple tenants: You are who you are. You are where you are. You are doing what you are doing. The time is now. That goes for the ensemble and audience members alike. Don’t expect pristine production value or even fully-functioning seats, but do expect to leave changed."

La Colombe Coffee Roasters

Coffee shop · Ravenswood

"La Colombe, Andersonville. La Colombe has all the makings of a modern coffee shop—industrial duct work, warm wood benches, distinct branding and, of course, delicious lattes. The roasters snagged the perfect corner space at Clark and Foster, making the heart of Andersonville the home of their third Chicago shop. Friendly baristas and sun-soaked seating make La Colombe the perfect spot to settle in for the afternoon with some work or meet a friend for a catch-up."

Women & Children First

Book store · Andersonville

"Women & Children First, Andersonville. The banner in the front window below the faded lavender awning reads “Open 1979. Open Today. Open Forever." When the original owners of the feminist bookstore decided to retire in 2014 they passed the torch on to two employees who have maintained the shop’s community-focused independent mission. Frequent author readings, book clubs, and other thought-provoking events have given Chicago’s diverse feminist and queer communities a place to find each other. Bonus: If you’ve seen Portlandia’s Women and Women First Bookstore skit, now you know where they're paying homage."

Simon's Tavern

Bar · Andersonville

"Simon's Tavern, Andersonville. Keep your eyes peeled for a Viking fish toasting a martini and you’ll spot Simon’s. Laid-back barkeeps, wood paneling, a couple well-loved couches, and a jukebox stocked with a mix of indie hits and classics make Simon’s the consummate neighborhood bar. Named for the original owner, a Swedish immigrant, some 80 years ago, the tavern is best-known for keeping the neighborhood warm with generous portions of glögg—a hot spiced mulled wine—throughout Chicago’s unforgiving winters. If heated booze isn’t your jam, come by in the summer when they run it through a slushy machine and serve it chilled!"

Svea Restaurant

Swedish restaurant · Andersonville

"Svea, Andersonville. Svea is the spitting image of your Swedish grandmother’s kitchen. The homey blue and yellow diner is filled with love, grease, and lingonberry jam. Try the Viking breakfast or Swedish pancakes. Great for brunch with close friends, or take yourself on a solo date: grab a copy of the Reader, saddle up to the breakfast counter, and enjoy a leisurely morning."

"Foursided, Andersonville. The name nods to their expertise in custom framing, but the jam-packed shop offers so much more. If you’re looking for an endearing greeting card, a Chicago-centric souvenir, or a handful of scrabble letters, this is the place to go. On the weekends the shop gets crowded with as many customers as racks of merchandise, making it hard to maneuver, but don’t be deterred. Locals cruise past the front window on the regular to coo over the ever-changing meticulous mix of kitschy vintage ephemera and hip letterpress prints gracing the display."

Woolly Mammoth

Antique store · Ravenswood

"Woolly Mammoth, Andersonville. Are you fresh out of your supply of animal jaw bones, extracted teeth or archaic medical instruments? Woolly Mammoth is the neighborhood go-to to stock up on all sorts of eclectic oddities. Upon entering be prepared to lock eyes with a furry friend since past as the shop’s most impressive collection is that of taxidermied critters."

Early to Bed

Adult entertainment store · Ravenswood

"Early to Bed, Andersonville. Whether it’s your first time stepping foot in an adult store, or swinging by to refill on lube is part of your weekly routine, Early to Bed is here for you. The owner Search and her friendly staff are happy to meet you where you’re at, answer your questions, and point you in the direction of the best vibrator, harness or dirty video to meet your needs. Explore your boundaries at a Non-Monogamy 101 workshop or stretch out your limbs at a yoga class."

5407 N Clark St

One of the most recent additions to the neighborhood, and a very welcome one, Vignette Vignette is helmed by two local art school graduates who were able to open their doors after running a successful crowdfunding campaign. Workshops boast playful names like Wheelin’ Wednesdays, #ThrowbackThursday, and Sunday Spins, which encourages attendees to bring their favorite records to spin while learning how to use the pottery wheel."

The Brown Elephant

Thrift store · Andersonville

"The Brown Elephant, Andersonville. Skip the Salvation Army and head to the Brown Elephant if you want your spending money to benefit a better source. If you’re more into aging architecture than secondhand sweaters, pop by to gander at the decaying details of the historic theater housing the Brown Elephant."

Hopleaf

Gastropub · Ravenswood

"Hopleaf, Andersonville. A list of Andersonville’s finest without mention of the Hopleaf would be considered heresy. The beer snob’s haven draws drinkers from all over the city to sample the expansive selection of Belgian brews and craft ales. The draft taps change out frequently, but the delicious dinner menu has stood the test of time. You can’t go wrong with the Steak Frites or the CB & J (Cashew Butter and Fig Jam) sandwich. If you’re not much of a drinker, the signage alone will satiate the palette of any design connoisseur.Pro tip: Leave the kids at home because they won’t let them in. And show up early unless you’re prepared to wait. The seats fill up quick on the weekend."

The Bristol

Permanently Closed

"The Bristol, Bucktown. The Bristol seems like it is underrated when it comes to the local dining scene, you don't hear much about it. Yet, it really is one of the best restaurants in Chicago and was named one of the 10 best new restaurants in the country by GQ. The menu changes based on seasonal selections and everything is a shared plate. This is also a great brunch spot, typically their is little to no wait and you'll get a fantastic meal."

Ipsento Coffee

Permanently Closed

"Ipsento Coffee, Bucktown. This is my favorite coffee shop in the city and it happens to be in my neighborhood. They do their own roasting and have a focus on sustainable coffee."

Li'l Guys

Sandwich shop · Bucktown

"My Pie & Li'l Guys, Bucktown. This is one of those places that I would have never tried, or probably even noticed, unless a friend had not recommended it to me. There are only a handful of spots in the city that are worth getting deep dish pizza at and this is one of them. Really great sauce and the dough isn’t obnoxiously thick. Also, Li’l Guys, which shares the space, features a Reuben sandwich that has bread made to order, pretty fantastic."

"The Bento Box, Bucktown. The Bento Box is a tiny a little shop on the main drag of Armitage Avenue, if you're not careful you'll miss it. Although small, this place is worth the visit. Cortland's Garage Chicago

Permanently Closed

"Cortland's Garage, Bucktown. Cortland's Garage is a bit of an outlier in the neighborhood. It has a heavy sports-bar vibe, but don't hold that against them. Here you can find glorious and gluttonous burgers. Cortland's is consistently rated as one of Chicago's top burger spots."

Shokolad Pastry & Cafe

Ukrainian restaurant · Humboldt Park

"Shokolad, Humboldt Park. When a cafe has over ten crepe options(!), you know you're in the right place. The mother-daughter duo that run the kitchen do not mess around. The menu's built to please: decadent omelettes and pastries served every morning, gooey paninis, and strong coffee. But the real gems are the Ukrainian specialties: homemade Borsch (so beety, so delicious) and varenyky, a pierogi that will warp your sense of dumpling reality."

Scofflaw

Bar · Logan Square

"Scofflaw, Humboldt Park. You have questions, Scofflaw has answers, and those answers are cucumber-pureed ice cubes and late night, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Sink into the Victorian armchairs and velvet settees and sip your way through their exquisitely-crafted, gin-focused cocktail menu. Though partial to gin (Old Tom Scofflaw is distilled in house), they do not discriminate against any libation. If bonded bourbon and absinthe is more your speed, try the Plausible Deniability—just treat lightly. Salsedo Press

Permanently Closed

"Salsedo Press, Humboldt Park. Salsedo's legendary May Day parties, lousy with kegs and a thousand lefties, may be a thing of the past, but the vibe lives on. Sure, they've been offering stellar offset and digital printing services for an impressive four decades, but the walls are the real draw here. Plastered over nearly every inch of prime space are vintage political posters, most printed in-house. The space is a veritable museum for the most significant social justice movements of our time. Maybe the revolution won't be televised, but it sure is being printed."

Roeser's Bakery

Bakery · Logan Square

"Roeser's Bakery, Humboldt Park. The Ol’ Faithful of bakeries, showering Humboldt Park with doughy sweets all day every day for almost a century now. Need a strawberry-creme filled lemon cake with your sweet MeeMaw's face on it? A red velvet retirement cake shaped like a hot dog? Of course you do. Get it here. The real unsung hero is the doughnut; even the neighborhood's grumpiest old men will line up on Saturday mornings for the fresh-baked glazed lemon poppy seed and the maple bacon long johns."

Grocery store · Humboldt Park

"Puerto Rico Food & Liquors, Humboldt Park. Over 800 varieties of craft beers are jammed into this tiny sliver of a shotgun bodega, alongside spirits, wine, general consumables, weekly homemade salsa that never disappoints, and a year-round selection of magically-always-perfectly-ripe avocados. Store owner Junior will charm your pants off regaling you with stories about hot peppers, obscure beer varietals, and how best to cook that zucchini on the grill."

1043 N California Ave

Building · Humboldt Park

"Pierogi Street, Humboldt Park. It began as a food truck, carting oh-so-tasty veggie + meat pierogis to the hungry masses. Now it's also a Sick Fisher-decorated eatery tucked along California Avenue, where more rad storefronts seem to open each day. The menus is simple, straightforward and fool-proof: pierogis, polish sausage, pickled beets and pretzels. Grab a seat in the sunny, open space crafted from beautiful, rough-hewn recycled lumber from Rebuilding Exchange."

Papa's Cache Sabroso

Puerto Rican restaurant · Humboldt Park

"Papa's Cache Sabroso, Humboldt Park. Do you love garlic? Of course you love garlic. Papa's will deliver it in spades on Chicago's finest contribution to Latino cuisine: the jibarito. Imagine sandwich bread but instead of bread it is greasy fried plantain, smothered in mayonnaise and jammed with garlicky meat! Mouth pow! Also, perfect rotisserie chicken. Luis Guzmán ate here and his picture's on the wall and that's all you need to know."

Margie's Candies

Ice cream shop · Logan Square

"Margie's Candies, Humboldt Park. Sure they have sammies and burgers and things, but why bother? The homemade ice cream is the main event here, though they also make dang good candies too. You can’t really go wrong, the only tough part is making a decision (or getting a table come summer). If you have 14 friends, take ‘em all and order the World’s Largest Terrapin: 15 scoops of fresh french vanilla topped with pretty much everything. “A delight to share.”"

Lockdown Bar & Grill

Permanently Closed

"Lockdown, Humboldt Park. Hardcore heavy metal burger joint. Albeit very tasty, it's notoriously loud as hell, and the hell-yes-yum-to-dollar-dollar-bill factor is high—think $13 for basic up to $18 for "The Death Sentence Burger." Tuesdays are half price burger day, but expect a long wait. Mac and cheese is worth traveling for."

2815 W Armitage Ave

Building · Logan Square

"Tastee Freez, Humboldt Park. The American dream is alive and well, although it is seasonal. Open only during the summer, Tastee Freez is the neighborhood respite serving the coolest treats on the hottest days. This is not a contemporary spin on a classic with a pseudo-sexy geometric logo made of hexagons and an army of winking icons. Here we have the pater familias—dipped cones and frozen bananas, a mix-match of ultra-vernacular lettering, ample hopscotch space near the picnic tables, and both dairy- and ice-based treats with every topping, flavor or combination imaginable. But order quick—the line can be long, the youths impatient. If you're in the mood for blue raspberry-flavored esoteric delights, go off the menu and ask for a Snow Storm."

Katherine Anne Confections

Chocolate shop · Logan Square

"Katherine Anne Confections, Humboldt Park. If there is a heaven, it's most definitely filled with Katherine Anne's. From the are-you-f'ng-kidding-me caramels (she's been making them since age 10!) to the better-than-fill-in-the-blank truffles (with new flavors turning up regularly), quite literally, nothing compares. And damn you if you miss a chance at the ridiculously rich seasonal FEW Bourbon hot chocolate with salted caramel marshmallows... you'll be crying until next year. Of course if you can't make it to the shop, there's an online store ready to take your order. Consider a monthly box, delivered directly to your door. And if you've trained your cat properly, you may not even have to get out of bed to enjoy the deliciousness."

"Humboldt Park: Fieldhouse, Humboldt Park. Equally stunning and decrepit, the 1928-built Field House misses the days when boats emerged from its bowels. Inside is full of great decorative stonework and marble pillars, but despite $1.7 million of repairs in the last few years, it still feels like a neglected post-apocalyptic set piece."

Humboldt House

Home goods store · Humboldt Park

"Humboldt House, Humboldt Park. Patterns, pooches, couches and couture fill this magically decorated vintage modern home shopping spot. Grab a seat under the warm glow of a neon logo while admiring the endlessly eclectic collection of pottery and succulents. When you're done wishing this place was your living room, head next door to Pierogi Street for some consolation dumplings."

GROUND CONTROL!

Permanently Closed

"Ground Control, Humboldt Park. Vegetarians and vegans rejoice! A spot made just for you, though even the carnivores line up for their meat-free take on classic sandwiches like bahn mi, jibaritos (though they're no Papa's), po' boys, tortas and one hell of a beet burger. The entrees are great, it's true, but the garlic smashed potatoes with country herb gravy are divine. Don't be shy with the gravy, it goes great with the fresh biscuits too. Just looking for something to sip on? Grab a seat at the bar and pick your poison from their impressive list of rotating drafts. The lighting is moody, the art deliciously weird, and the staff is fantastic and friendly."

For Dog's Sake

Pet store · Logan Square

"For Dog's Sake, Humboldt Park. Not sure there's a pet store in Chicago with better designed regalia. For 25 years, they've been slinging the highest quality, healthy brands for your furry pals, and the space is abuzz with great vibes. Bright and full of cool vintage doo-dads, the shop also boasts big, beautiful backlit photo boxes of the most darling creatures. Don't let the name fool you, they carry plenty of goodness for your feline friends, too (not that your cat cares where you shop or if you live). We are especially down with their commitment to animals in need. The owners took over a massive warehouse to shelter fosters while they await their forever homes. Ooh, the feelings! Also not to be missed: sensibly-sized homemade cakes for your pooch, if you're in the mood (who are you kidding of course you are) to treat your little one to something special."

Cup & Spoon

Permanently Closed

"Cup & Spoon, Humboldt Park. Pop tarts for grown-ups, sandwiches almost too pretty to eat, and an eclectic variety of caffeinated potables. Everything’s 1000% local, including the art. Better than ‘Bucks and punnier too. Stop by on a Sunday for their farmers market, held a few doors down at the mural garden. Or if you're more performatively-inclined, let your flag fly at one of their regular open mic nights."

C.C. Ferns

Permanently Closed

"C.C. Ferns, Humboldt Park. Hidden 'round the corner of California and Augusta, CC Ferns is a one of those sweet little spots you always dream of stumbling across. Weekday or weekend, begin your day here with cortado, espresso, or an iced coffee brewed from Ferns' custom Metropolis roast. Mysteriously dubbed “Project X,” it's needfully strong with a cocoa and earth forward flavor, no acidity or bitterness here. Opened in 2015, the cafe is owned by the folks at The California Clipper and shares a backroom with the dimly-lit dive, which has been there since 1937. The bar's liquor license extends to the cafe, making it a Sunday morning mecca where you can pick up an adorably named Boozy Steamer. During the weekday billable hours, maybe stick with a doughnut and cold brew—the steamers do not mess around. We highly recommend the Scotch & Honey, made with Famous Grouse, almond and honey, for a double-edged buzz."

Café Colao

Puerto Rican restaurant · Humboldt Park

"Café Colao, Humboldt Park. "Is that everything, honey?" Prepare your mouth for buttery sandwich heaven. Tripleta and medianoche and lechon for the meat lovers, egg and avocado for the vegheads. Wash down a tasty quesito with a sweetbomb namesake café colao. Notoriously slow, but worth the wait."

Bullhead Cantina

Permanently Closed

"Bullhead Cantina, Humboldt Park. The aesthetic may veer a little "Ye Olde Route 66 Knick-Knack Decorated Bar Place," but the excellent specials, more than fair prices and tacos wrapped up in piping hot homemade tortillas are legit. Feels weird to say this but don't sleep on the salads! Large enough to share but good enough you won't want to. And for just $6 any day of the week, they offer a get-drunk-cheap-fast "No Bullshit!" special that includes a taco, cheapo tallboy + a shot of Evan Williams."

Archie's Iowa Rockwell Tavern

Bar · Humboldt Park

"Archie's, Humboldt Park. A divey neighborhood fave, tucked among quiet residential streets. Dog-friendly, so there is often a gaggle of canine regulars alongside the beardos. Board games, free pool, good jukebox, a comfortably dim interior, reasonably priced beers with monthly specials = A-OK BAR TIMES."

Adams & Son & Daughter Gardens

Garden center · Humboldt Park

"Adams & Son Gardens, Humboldt Park. Tony will hook you up. Ferns, hostas, coleus, lemongrass, tomatoes, soil, manure, gloves, whatever you need. Gardenias? Fertilizer? Money tree? Fresh flowers? All here. A busy, dense little nursery, chock-a-block with healthy flora, family run since '93."

Creative Claythings

Art school · West Town

"Creative Clay Things, Kinzie Corridor. What started as a dedicated teaching studio quickly became one of the only galleries showing the works of Chicago's talented ceramicists. Today, at its current home at 2255 W Grand Ave, it continues as a studio full of talent willing to pass on the art of ceramics to all who are willing to learn. Stop by to view what is on display, sign up for a intensive class or snag a studio membership."

Goose Island Taproom

"Goose Island Brewery, Kinzie Corridor. Goose Island Brewery may have grown too big for its "craft" label, but it's still producing tasty brews and offers some good times with frequent tours (Thursday thru Sunday) and a tap room where you can drink Goose Island beers you can't get anywhere else."

Uncle Mike's Place

Filipino restaurant · West Town

"Uncle Mike's, Kinzie Corridor. Uncle Mike’s is a classic spot in the neighborhood. They’ve got everyday no frills breakfast food, and we highly recommend their Filipino breakfast. It’s quite a lot of food, and it’s not your typical brunch cuisine. It gets busy on a weekend, but opens at 5 AM for any of you eager or early birds."

Big Delicious Planet

Caterer · West Town

"Big Delicious Planet, Kinzie Corridor. Kinzie Corridor isn’t known for its restaurant scene, there are few and they are far between. But, BDP is a shining star in the neighborhood. This catering company blessed us all when they opened up this brilliant canteen. Open early and with a new special every day, you don’t go hungry or get bored. They’ve got killer breakfast burritos and a wonderful warm staff to keep you coming back."

1821 W Hubbard St

Building · West Town

"Johalla Projects, Kinzie Corridor. Johalla Projects is many things: a gallery, a curatorial platform, a public arts facilitator. But its homebase is a bright white box in a semi-industrial area, blocks from the Ashland Green Line stop. Perhaps known more as a multi-faceted creative agency, Johalla organizes and execute immersive, art-based events and special projects locally and around country. See the artists they work with in the gallery, on the street corner, in the train station or at music festivals and events, nationwide."

Devening Projects

Art gallery · East Garfield Park

"devening projects + editions, Kinzie Corridor. Focusing equally on emerging local talent, and internationally established artist, devening projects + editions is a quiet and thoughtful space tucked away in Chicago’s Kinzie Corridor neighborhood amongst an old industrial building of modest artist studios, galleries and show rooms. Although the neighborhood can be very industrial and a little rough around the edges, you will no doubt be rewarded with great art and conversation. Including both a formal gallery space and detached project room, Devening focuses on showcasing artist of all mediums, and typically collaborates with each exhibitor to publish an editioned work, making the exhibitions accessible at any level or price point. If you want to see the art world’s household names of tomorrow, this is the place to be. Make sure to set an appointment for the best experience and say hello to Dan for us!"

Cobra Lounge

Restaurant · West Town

"Cobra Lounge, Kinzie Corridor. The addition of All Rise Brewing Company and the new outdoor patio have transformed Cobra Lounge into a hot destination for a burger and a beer on a hot summer day. Juxtaposed next to the newly built beer hall is the music lounge, which offers an intimate vibe for listening to some of Chicago’s emerging musical talents."

Union Park

Park · West Town

"Union Park, Kinzie Corridor. Located just off the Ashland Green Line stop, Union Park is most known as the home to Pitchfork Music Festival. Each year over forty bands take the stage over the course of three days while music-goers can enjoy food and drinks from some of Chicago’s local favorites. The park also hosts a number of other musical festivals throughout the year including North Coast Music Festival and Aahh! Fest. When the park isn’t being transformed for audible enjoyment, it’s busy being used to enjoy the best of Chicago’s summers. The park totals 13.46 acres and features a fieldhouse which houses a gymnasium and fitness center. Outside, the park offers tennis and basketball courts, a swimming pool, playground and athletic fields for football, soccer and baseball."

Platform Studios Chicago

Art gallery · West Town

"Platform Studios, Kinzie Corridor. Whether you’re looking to sharpen dull figure drawing skills, learn the basics of working in oils or you simply want to visit the working studios of the thirteen Chicago-based artists, head to Platform. This space is yet another vibrant artist-run community that calls the lofts at 1821 Hubbard home. The doors are (nearly) always open. And when they’re not, Spudnik Press is only one door down."

Inspired by the lack of high-end technical equipment available to young photographers starting out after college, the volunteers at Latitude help fill the void by providing access to high-end digital media equipment, a professional production space and a curriculum dedicated to real-world workflows and contemporary art theory."

Shop, explore or pony up some dough and rent all three floors out for your next shindig in one of Chicago’s most eclectic and unusual event spaces."

5411 Empanadas

Argentinian restaurant · Lakeview East

"5411 Empanadas, Lakeview. This popular food truck turned brick and mortar has been cranking out some of the city's best empanadas since 2009 (since 2012 in this storefront). Named after the international dialing code for Buenos Aires, 5411 has brought a little bit of Argentina to Clark Street – and there's no mistaking that trademark blue. The space is modern and airy and the patio is perfect for a warm day's quick eats. Plus, 5411 is BYOB. I recommend grabbing a 6-pack nearby (Binny's, etc), a friend and one of many distinctly shaped savory pastries. Don't pass on the Malbec beef. Do not."

DryHop Brewers

Brewery · Lakeview East

"DryHop Brewers, Lakeview. DryHop is a welcome addition to Lakeview East, and the neighborhood in general. With the massive growth of the craft beer industry in Chicago, it was tough to believe that one of the city's biggest neighborhoods was brewery-less. Thankfully in 2013, "DHB" changed that. That year they were named Best New Brewery in Chicago, and have sported a draft list of house and guest brews that changes multiple times a week. Plus, they were the first in the area to offer 32 oz. Crowlers to-go. Couple the killer craft beers (including a flagship wheat IPA named Shark Meets Hipster) with an incredible gastropub menu, and you might be here a while."

"Heritage Bicycles, Lakeview. In a relatively quiet part of Lakeview, you'll find this bicycle meets coffee shop. Heritage sports an uber loyal following where everyone seems to know everyone else; a true neighborhood hangout. Whether you're looking for coffee, a gift, a handmade bicycle or even a tuneup, Heritage has you covered. They often host community events after hours, too. The general store aesthetic and accompanying outdoor seating options are the perfect place to let the hours pass. And although there are plenty who do, you don't have to ride bike to enjoy the joint."

Bobtail Ice Cream

Permanently Closed

"Bobtail, Lakeview. At the corner of Wellington & Broadway, a distinctive blue striped awning marks a Lakeview East favorite, Bobtail. It's the kind of place that no matter the time of day or season, is always housing someone looking to have a scoop or two. And in summer, there are usually lines out the door to prove it. Having lived at this intersection for a few years, it takes serious willpower not to snag another punch on the loyalty card. Go for the Cubby Crunch, waffle cone. It doesn't disappoint. Or bring back a pint to share."

Beermiscuous

Bar · Lakeview

"Beermiscuous, Lakeview. With the slogan "drink around," Beermiscuous encourages beer exploration. And this tasting room & bottle shop is arguably the best place to do so in the city. With over 350 bottles/cans and 12 draft lines, you can be choosy. The cozy craft beer cafe is also credited as having the widest range of Chicagoland breweries available in one place – 30+, and over 130 of their beers. Whether you are looking to build your own 6-pack, or in search of an afternoon coffee shop alternative, this quiet corner spot has got ya covered."

Wrigley Field

Stadium · Lakeview

"Wrigley Field, Lakeview. Wrigley is an institution, there's no denying it. Built in 1914, the ballpark just passed the century mark and is getting further spruced up, too. Whether you are catching a Cubs game from the bleachers, the upper deck or a neighboring rooftop, it's tough to escape the buzz on game day. The stadium is truly an anchor to the neighborhood and gives the surrounding area it's own obviously named enclave, Wrigleyville. Nothing beats the charm of the Friendly Confines. So grab a $9 beer, some peanuts and a 'Vienna' and take in this relic of America's pastime."

"Sheffield's Beer Garden, Lakeview. Sheffield's is a Chicago craft beer pioneer of a pub. It's sat on this distinct corner spot since 1980, and has grown it's beer program impressively ever since. Every year warm weather is christened by the Cubs settling in up the street, Chicagoans everywhere crawling out from their winter burrows, and folks fighting for space in the Sheffield's Beer Garden. To accompany their BBQ offering, Sheffield's always has a great $4 monthly beer special on draft, one of 40+ beers occupying tap space. Get their before games let out at Wrigley in order to snag a seat on the patio."

3126 N Broadway

Building · Lakeview East

"Reckless Records, Lakeview. On the stretch of Broadway that is home to several other spots on this list, you'll find Reckless. It's a vinyl collector's playground. You could spend an entire afternoon rummaging through the record collection – old and new. It's tough to drop in here and not leave with something. Whether you are in the mood for punk, blues, rap or indie, it's all here. And if it's not here, they can order it for you, or at least look into it. I recommend digging through the Chicago blues stuff. Or, anything from this little Detroit rock outfit, The White Stripes."

"Osmium Coffee Bar, Lakeview. Osmium is Dark Matter Coffee's Lakeview cafe. The west side roaster opened up here to fill a void on a somewhat unremarkable swath of Belmont Avenue. Despite being on an "in between" stretch, this quirky coffee bar is a great hangout and is always buzzing. The coffee is unpretentious, refilled for free, and damn good. And they stock Do-Rite donuts daily. The interior embraces kitsch, and the back patio can accommodate a small army. As a roaming freelancer looking to borrow wifi, it's tough to beat."

Bar Pastoral

Permanently Closed

"Pastoral, Lakeview. Pastoral is a wine and cheese kinda place. Or cheese and wine, depending on your priorities. The quaint deli counter space here also offers sandwiches to order and some local packaged goods. But did I mention the cheese? They know their stuff. Also, not pictured here, is their space next door that opens in the evening, Bar Pastoral. That's a place where they embrace their knowledge of wine – and is a popular neighborhood date spot."

Fish Bar

Seafood restaurant · Lakeview

"Fish Bar, Lakeview. Right off the Wellington L stop, you'll find this great lunch spot. With a super approachable menu and casual New England-esque space, Fish Bar is sure to please. With only 3 booths and a patio, most of the seating is directed to the wraparound bar where you're waited on thoroughly, diner countertop-style. The menu is broken down clearly and always offers a variety of fish that is in season or 'Chef's choice,' to keep things interesting. For a tried and true lunch, go for the Codfish sandwich or blackened tacos, hush puppies or tots, and...a beer. Seafood not your thing? Head next door to their DMK Burger Bar..."

Metro

Live music venue · Lakeview

"Metro, Lakeview. Just north of Wrigley Field you'll find this respite from the sea of generic sports bars. Up here on Clark Street, sits the Metro. An institution in the Chicago music scene since the early '80s. Metro, as a rock venue, sits in that sweet spot size-wise between being too small or too large. And for that reason, it's played host to a more than impressive roster of acts. Not to mention, it was not only one of R.E.M.'s first venues, but is credited for launching the Smashing Pumpkins. Remember to bring cash for the bars or servers during your show. And if you want to skip the opening acts, sneak up the side (stage right) for an always overlooked patch of standing room near the stage. After the gig lets out, head next door to the Gingerman Tavern and you just might rub elbows with a musician or two."

3600 N Recreation Dr

Building · Lincoln Park

"Lincoln Park, Lakeview. The city's – and one of the country's – largest park, Lincoln Park is a behemoth. The main stretch of course lies to the south of Lakeview in the neighborhood that bears its name. But, a good deal of the park still spans north into Lakeview and onward. With over 1,200 acres in total, Lincoln Park has something for any outdoorsy city goer – biking, running, tennis, golf, etc. Lakeview's portion also includes one of the best kept hideaways, in and around the Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary behind Belmont Harbor. From Diversey Avenue to Irving Park Road, the park is the city's best break from the concrete jungle."

Intelligentsia Coffee Broadway Coffeebar

Coffee shop · Lakeview East

"Intelligentsia Coffee, Lakeview. Lakeview East is home to this original Intelligentsia cafe. I recall hearing of their pour-overs being described by coworkers in legendary fashion, back when I had no idea what a pour-over was. This place is for the uber coffee geek, and the casual drinker alike. I can vouch for the latter. Although these folks take their coffee very seriously, they are just as eager to share recommendations. You can either set up shop in the cafe at a number of tables, or have your caffeine as takeaway. The whole bean options also make a great gift."

Foursided Card + Gift

Gift shop · Lakeview East

"Foursided, Lakeview. Foursided is the kind of shop that is visually overstimulating, even from the street. Although there are more than your fair share of greeting cards, the store also has an impressive batch of local artist's prints, vintage maps and postcards – as well as any number of Chicago related gift options. The selection is always rotating, so it feels fresh almost any visit. This outpost on Clark is one of 3 locations, including one with a focus on framing just a couple blocks east on Broadway. Here, aside from great local finds, you've also go the chance to drop into the adjoining gallery to view a featured artist. Lots of options."

Duke Of Perth

Permanently Closed

"Duke of Perth, Lakeview. If it weren't for the massive gold lettering out front, this spot might get overlooked by the casual passerby. Thankfully, that's at least enough to draw in first-timers. After that, Duke of Perth becomes one of those cozy go-tos. Considered thee Scottish pub in Chicago, DOP offers a generous variety of whiskeys, several beers you'd be hard pressed to find on tap elsewhere, and a somewhat secret patio. Then, there are Fridays. For $12, you can help yourself to all you can eat fish & chips. This is why many know the place. Also, there are few cozier bars to hole up in during a Windy City winter."

Dinkel's Bakery

Permanently Closed

"Dinkel's, Lakeview. Dinkel's is the kind of place that your mom might've taken you to as a kid. And you no doubt would've remembered it. With it's distinct neon and pink interior, the Lincoln Avenue bakery in West Lakeview is hard to miss. Since 1922, they've been churning out donuts, pastries, cakes and any number of other baked goods to grinning clientele. They also offer breakfast sandwiches and coffee if sweets aren't your thing. This kind of shop is a dying breed, but there's little worry that Dinkel's is going anywhere soon."

L & L Tavern

Bar · Lakeview

"L & L Tavern, Lakeview. Situated at the colorful intersection of Clark & Belmont, L&L is a place that draws an eclectic crowd. It's a dive bar that will possibly even change your perception of dive bars. A truly deep dive. To say it lacks frills is an understatement. And that is just what makes it so...charming, let's say. The tavern is weathered, the seating looks like it got rejected from a community center and the beer lineup consists of just about any canned suspect you can think of. Speaking of suspects, L&L's seedy past included unknowingly providing a window seat to not one but two notorious serial killers. And despite it's checkered past, this spot is certainly one worth visiting. You'd be doing it wrong if you didn't order a PBR and a shot of Malort. Enjoy!"

Crisp

Chicken wings restaurant · Lakeview East

"Crisp, Lakeview. Crisp is an unassuming counter-service restaurant, possibly with an identity crisis. It's a Korean menu at it's core – but they also serve sandwiches, burritos, french fries and wings. The common thread is of course the chicken; fried, acclaimed and covered in your choice of sauce. When I lived nearby, I walked by this no frills orange storefront a dozen times before my interest was piqued by the always packed interior. And after one visit, it's easy to see why. You cannot go wrong with this menu, plus it's BYOB. The bowls are great, the sandwiches and wings are even better. Opt for the house "sassy" sauce (seriously) and wait for a seat to open up at one of the communal tables."

Landmark's Century Centre Cinema

Movie theater · Lakeview East

"Century Cinemas, Lakeview. A longtime staple for indie film viewing, this beautiful theatre building at the split of Clark and Broadway recently got a facelift. The Century now sports a slick charcoal interior and a bar/lounge. The building is still waiting on the other tenants to follow suit, but hey. Even with the new lounge, the draw here is still obviously the movies. And with an always impressive lineup of flicks you often can't catch anywhere else, the Century is a must for film fanatics."

"Corridor Brewery & Provisions, Lakeview. West Lakeview's Southport Corridor is home to this aptly named brewpub. The brewery (& provisions) is the sister operation to the neighborhood's other brewery, DryHop. Here, however, the focus is on farmhouse style ales but still with a hop forward approach. Paired with some seriously tasty pizzas and appetizers (and probably the best looking brewery interior in the area) and you've got a destination. Oh, and they've got booths – everyone prefers a booth!"

Byron's Hot Dog

Hot dog restaurant · Lakeview

"Byron's Hot Dogs, Lakeview. In Chicago, a "hot dog stand" is not a roadside mobile steamer cart, but rather the term for any number of permanent outposts serving up the preferable Viennas. Byron's on the far north side of Lakeview, at Uptown's border, is no exception. This place has no frills stamped all over it, and caters to the construction worker, cubicle dweller and hipster alike. It's a great spot to grab a Chicago dog (see sign) on the way to Wrigley or the beach. Plus, it's President Obama's pick when he's in town (or being served the same grub at the White House, apparently). Good enough for POTUS, good enough for me."

"Strange Cargo, Lakeview. Strange Cargo has one of the city's most fitting business names. This shop in Wrigleyville is visual overload, full of vintage tees and knick-knacks that would make any 90s child grin. Known to many as a custom and quick t-shirt maker, you can also find any number of punny throwback shirts or Chicago-specific threads. It's also home to plenty of iron-on decals, patches, buttons and other novelties. Perfect if you're planning a Ferris Bueller, Harry Caray, or other Second-City-specific bar crawl or gathering where cheesy tees are a must."

Schubas Tavern

Pub · Lakeview

"Schubas Tavern, Lakeview. A bar of some shape or form has existed within these walls since 1903. Then, it was built as an outpost for Schlitz Brewery to bring their product more easily to the masses. Today, you can still have a Schlitz, at Schubas, thank God. If you aren't here for the Schlitz pints, it's likely because you came for a gig. The back room houses a intimate but comfortable stage that books plenty of acclaimed indie acts. Schubas is one of those rare neighborhood bars that people will also make the trek to, for one reason or another. The place just oozes "Chicago."

"TeaGschwendner, Lakeview. OK, this tea shop is technically on the Lincoln Park side of Diversey Avenue, but it caters to plenty Lakeview residents. Part of a chain of over 130 locations worldwide, this European tea vendor has a loyal following in Chicago – home to it's only two North American locations (the other is a Gold Coast outpost). The selection is unmatched, and has the power to turn on even the most apprehensive tea drinkers. With walls of black, green, grey, herbal & fruit tea varieties, TeaGschwendner has something for everyone. The staff is more than willing to help you pick out a new tea to try, and even give you a lesson in pronouncing the shop's do-sy of a name."

Red Star Bar

Temporarily Closed

"Red Star Bar, Lincoln Park. Nestled between the Depaul campus and the Fullerton Red Line station lies an unassuming, humble abode of sought after local craft beer inside of Whole Foods Market. They offer affordable drink specials every day of the week, including $3 bottles and cans everyday. On your way out, grab a bomber or six pack from the carefully curated beer fridge."

Lincoln Hall

Bar · Wrightwood Neighbors

"Lincoln Hall, Lincoln Park. Long before it was a music venue, the building that now hosts Lincoln Hall rose to fame when FBI snipers took over the rooftop to prevent mobster John Dillinger from escaping the nearby Biograph Theatre the night he was killed. These days, the happenings at Lincoln Hall are a lot less dramatic but definitely not any less exciting. On any given night you can catch a variety of music, from hip hop to folk to rock. While it's much bigger than its sister venue Schubas, it still retains that same feeling of intimacy. So grab a beer, settle in on the main floor or balcony and enjoy the show."

Lincoln Park Conservatory

Botanical garden · Lincoln Park

"Lincoln Park Conservatory, Lincoln Park. Lincoln Park Conservatory is a Victorian Era glass house, built in late nineteenth century. It contains four rooms displaying exotic plants from around the world and it also grows the thousands of plants needed for use in the parks. There are four display houses: Palm House, Fern Room, Orchid House and Show House, which is home to the annual flower shows. Some have called it "A Paradise Under Glass" and it's exotic plans are so popular that in 1897, the Egyptian government asked the Conservatory for seeds of their water lilies flowers. If you're looking to embrace your inner botanist or just looking to escape and hustle and bustle of this busy city, Lincoln Park Conservatory is the perfect oasis."

Local Option

Brewpub · Sheffield Neighbors

"Local Option, Lincoln Park. Local Option is a heavy metal brewpub found at the base of a nondescript three flat on the north side of Webster Avenue, just west of Seminary. You won't find drink specials or a cocktail menu here, just a whole lot of taps of liquid gold. About half of them are their own and the other are some of your best seasonal craft brews from around the country. Local Option is just as serious about its brewing division as it the bar itself. They've amassed a rotating collection of extremely unique German-inspired biers, which makes their tap list the true spotlight. In the unlikely event you can’t find something you like on draft, there’s also an impressive bottle selection. Their menu offers comfort food with a focus on Creole style pub eats and as we all know, anything from the deep fryer can't miss."

Before the show, stop in to 1959, the in-house Second City kitchen & speakeasy bar that pays homage to the year the venue opened. Head upstairs to the Main Stage for a top notch comedy show with a local cast of talent guaranteed to leave you in stitches. Second City is also the largest school of improvisation and sketch comedy in the world welcoming amateurs looking to try something new, and advanced players looking to hone their craft."

B.L.U.E.S.

Permanently Closed

"B.L.U.E.S. Bar, Lincoln Park. BL.U.E.S. is as authentic as Chicago Blues music gets. You can catch a live show at this cozy, intimate venue every night of the week. They host both obscure acts and legends like Vance "Guitar" Kelly, but focus primarily on local talent. This dark, moody venue is dimly lit by strands of Christmas lights, revealing walls that are covered in the history of Blues and Chicago icons. Small tables bring you up close and personal with others patrons, one of whom might be a Blues artist having a drink on their day off. B.L.U.E.S is overflowing with old-school Chicago charm, and the friendly and attentive staff makes sure to keep your drinks full while you enjoy the show."

Homeslice

Pizza restaurant · Sheffield Neighbors

"Homeslice, Lincoln Park. Dining at Homeslice is like stepping into a slice of the Pacific Northwest, quite literally. Their rustic style log cabin interior was built from logs hauled from Oregon, giving this not-so-Chicago-style pizza joint a very homey and original feel. Their thin crust pizzas are anything but conventional, and with their extensive list of meat-free pizzas, there's guaranteed to be something for everyone. If you're lucky, you'll run into the house pup, Gary the frenchie, in their super comfortable outdoor patio space."

Lincoln Park Zoo

Zoo · Lincoln Park

"Lincoln Park Zoo, Lincoln Park. Lincoln Park zoo, which started with the donation of mute swans from New York City's Central Park in 1868, has grown to an extensive collection of about 1,100 animals from 200 species. Adhering to their slogan "Lincoln Park Zoo is everyone's zoo", the zoo is dedicated to permanently keeping its admission policy free for everyone, 365 days a year. A fun day out for people of all ages - I may or may not have watched the beaver swim for a solid 10 minutes. When you need a break, grab a snow cone and some popcorn in the cafe (located in the middle of the zoo) and be sure to check out the amazing view of the Chicago skyline from the south pond."

Delilah's Chicago

Bar · Wrightwood Neighbors

"Delilah's, Lincoln Park. Delilah's is not a whiskey bar, but it is a bar that serves a whole lotta whiskey - over 750 different kinds. This punk rock venue offers something a little different from the usual Lincoln Park bar scene and you can expect to find a broad mix of people drawn in by their shared love of whiskey and alternative music. The second-floor bar feels like a Chicago house party - complete with with a pool table and an Addams family pinball machine. It's hard to label Delilah's just a bar, as it also screens cult movies, hosts beer festivals and displays a rotating collection of art from local artists."

Stan's Donuts & Coffee

Donut shop · Lakeview East

"Stan's Donuts & Coffee, Lincoln Park. Stan's is new to the neighborhood, but definitely not easily missed. They've made their presence unmistakably known by filling the air at Clark and Diversey with the irresistible smell of fresh donuts. Stan's bright interior is reminiscent of a retro diner, with a wall of colorful Kitchen Aid mixers and pink packaging. They've definitely chosen the gourmet creative route with donuts like maple caramel bacon, captain crunch and peanut butter-banana, although you really can't beat their classic old fashioned. Stan’s makes donuts throughout the day so you can always get your fix, but if you get there early enough there are also gluten free and vegan options available. Be warned: A single Stan’s donut will spoil you for life."

Atlas Brewing Company

Permanently Closed

"Atlas Brewing Company, Lincoln Park. Atlas is a key cog in the movement that is Chicago craft beer. The modest Lincoln Park brewery creates unique craft drafts in their small brewpub operation. Inside you'll find communal seats and a wall of framed vintage Atlas ads, a homage to the original Atlas Brewing Company that originated in Chicago in 1896 but closed after prohibition. Their pub food really compliments the great beer selection - be sure to try the fish tacos, which are battered in their Diversey Pale Ale. Once summer hits, grab a pint and soak up the sun on their sidewalk patio or you can head next door to Seven Ten Lounge where you can continue to sip on Atlas drafts while bowling with your friends."

It's easy to be drawn into Green's luscious curb appeal, as it's wide array of flowers and plants are proudly displayed on the front steps and throughout the large sunny front facing windows. This owner-run shop feels like part jungle, part florist and part antique store. The staff is friendly and very knowledgable of their wide array of plant species and ornate artifacts."

"Dave's Records, Lincoln Park. The name says it all, Dave's Records is that and that only. No CD's, no tapes, no laserdiscs, just pure dedication to vinyl. On any given day, you'll find owner Dave Crain diligently working to keep a massive collection of new releases and old gems stocked and rotating. The tiny space is packed floor to ceiling with vinyl. It might require some digging, but theres something here for everyone. In a day when digital is common, Dave's pays homage to physical form and celebrates vinyl as king."

Molly's Cupcakes

Cupcake shop · Park West

"Molly's Cupcakes, Lincoln Park. Molly's is a modern-vintage bakery with unique approach to their cupcakes and sweets. The playful vibe makes you feel somewhat like a kid at heart, and rightfully so as a portion of all sales go directly to helping schools in the local community. The very friendly staff will help you pick from gourmet treats like the Ron Bennington (chocolate with peanut butter filling, and my personal favorite) and Passionfruit Phantasy. No matter what you choose to order, you'll be able to taste the freshness of their decedent, moist cupcakes. Grab yourself a coffee and relax at their bar, complete with swing set seats."

Sultan's Market

Middle Eastern restaurant · Park West

"Sultan's Market, Lincoln Park. Sultan's Market is loved by both carnivores and vegetarians (there's even a few vegan options) and their falafel sandwich can't be beat. The tasty pockets of perfectly fried, crispy falafel, Jerusalem salad and hummus are incredibly delicious and won't break the bank. They also serve up hearty soups, addictive stuffed pies and if that's still not enough, you can have your pick at their expansive salad bar. Oh and don't you dare walk out the door without some of the baklava. Come in and see what the fuss is all about, leave stuffed and amazed at how small your bill is."

Liar’s Club

Bar · Sheffield Neighbors

"Liar's Club, Lincoln Park. Liar's club is is easy to miss because of its off the beaten track location, between Clybourn and the Metra tracks on Fullerton, but that only adds to its underground mystique. It's perfect for punk rockers and metal heads, yet inviting to anyone who wants to enjoy that perfect combination of music, mingling, and booze. Once you've had one of the many great craft beers on tap from the first-rate bar staff, be sure to hit up the dance floor. Liar's is known to throw one hell of a dance party and everyone is invited, including ghosts! The bar is rumored to be extremely hunted."

The Wiener's Circle

Hot dog stand · Park West

"Wiener's Circle, Lincoln Park. This infamous late-night hot dog stand is known for their Chicago-style char dog's, and more importantly, foul and aggressive verbal abuse between the employees and customers. On weekends, they stay open and packed until 5 am, making this a go to spot for late night inebriated face stuffing and shit talking. Wiener's Circle has a knack for remaining witty and relevant, whether it be dressing up as McDowell's for Halloween, or the timely addition of the 3 inch Trump Footlong to their menu. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, order the chocolate shake."

The Sixth

Permanently Closed

"The Sixth, Lincoln Square. Around the corner from the main strip, this little bar is new to Lincoln Square and a great addition to the area. The bar feels dark and upscale, but the vibe is relaxed, perfect for small groups or duos out on the town. During the week, it's like a modern day version of Cheers where everyone knows your name, and you can usually get in with no wait. The weekends are packed from open til close, and a great little spot for a drink before or after dinner in the hood. The cocktails, all $12 each, balance whimsy with familiarity. The menu was conceived by beverage director Benjamin Schiller, where he combines some unexpected ingredients like wheat bourbon with Dark Matter’s Unicorn Blood coffee and pipe tobacco or a mescal-based drink with grilled pineapple and hazelnut with swirls of cedar smoke. Our personal opinion—don't be tempted by the pizza next door at Roots. It's not the best in town. If pizza is what you want, go the extra mile to Pizza Art Cafe or Lou Malnati's down the street."

Half Acre Beer Company

Permanently Closed

"Half Acre Beer Co., Lincoln Square. This is just outside of the Lincoln Square jurisdiction, but we had to include it because it's just steps away and is one of our favorites. Half Acre is a local craft brewery who has a grip on Chicago bars and liquor stores. If you fancy a tour of the brewery, be sure to get there early since they cap the tour at 60 people and it fills up fast. If you end up being #61 and get denied, hang out in their tap room to sample some beer or visit their store to bring a growler home with you. Their tap room is a hot spot in Lincoln Square and is the perfect place to grab a beer with a friend or a group of people, any day of the week.Pretty soon their second production facility, 1.5 miles north of this one, will be open to the public and include a tap room, 200 seat restaurant and 5,000 sqft event space.Tip: Right now this location doesn't serve food, but there's plans in the works to build a kitchen."

Pizza Art Cafe

Italian restaurant · Ravenswood

"Pizza Art Cafe, Lincoln Square. A cute, family-owned, authentic Italian restaurant off the main strip in a quaint neighborhood. The staff actually speaks Italian to each other. We love their brick oven pizzas. Our favorites are the Prosciutto, Siciliana, Bresaola and Pizza D’Estate. We've heard the Funghi pizza with the addition of Prosciutto is heaven on a plate (it's next to try). Our favorite pasta is the Pesto with Grilled Chicken - so many simple flavors but put together, they are delicious. You can dine in or eat on their patio in the summer. Tip: Make a reservation in advance if you’re going on the weekend. Oh and don’t forget to bring your drink of choice since they’re a BYOB!"

Tiny Lounge

Permanently Closed

"Tiny Lounge, Lincoln Square. Tiny Loungeis a really well-designed neighborhood bar/restaurant who serves up craft cocktails and upscale pub food in a low-lit, relaxed setting. We love their patio and open air dining in the summer or sitting at the bar for dinner during the cooler nights. It’s somewhat hidden from the main strip of go-to restaurants on Lincoln Ave., which is what we love about it. It’s become our date night spot when we don’t feel like going too far from home or a great place to cheers to happy hour. They also serve a tasty brunch on Sundays. If you go, you MUST get the Tiny Burgers and fries—they come topped with bacon and with magical dipping sauces that will have you dreaming about them the next day. Another favorite is the Pizzetta Margherita and the daily specials are usually fantastic. For drinks, we’re whiskey lovers so the Suburban and Wyatt Earp are our favorites, hands down."

DueLire Vino & Cucina

Italian restaurant · Ravenswood

"DueLire Vino & Cucina, Lincoln Square. Great for a night out with your favorite guy or gal. We can’t say enough good things about this place. They use local and seasonal ingredients, their pasta is homemade, the wine is some of the best we’ve had, the food is off the charts and the staff is just awesome. The owner is always there, enjoying every moment of his business and making sure everyone’s taken care of. The patio is a treat, with lights strung overhead, mosaic tiled tables and flowers lining the patio. Order a bottle of wine (the Gran Passione Rosso won't disappoint) and plan to stay a while. Start out with the cheese board and the soup of the day. The short rib ravioli or flat iron steak is great for the main course. If you’re still hungry after all that goodness, get the Panna Cotta with fresh fruit for dessert. Tip: Wednesdays are half price bottles of wine with the purchase of an entree."

Essence of India

Indian restaurant · Ravenswood

"Essence of India, Lincoln Square. Don’t mind the bad website—the food is amazing. This authentic indian restaurant is nice and cozy inside with a small outdoor patio for summer seating. Order a 22oz Taj Mahal beer imported from India or try out their indian-inspired cocktails—a favorite is the Hum on the Rocks. It’s so good that a friend of ours bought the Hum Botanical Spirit from Gene’s Sausage Shop down the street to replicate the drink at home. You'll start out with complimentary Papadum (disc-shaped lentil crackers) and a trio of sauces. Our favorite dishes are theMurg Tikka Masala andVegetable Korma. Just as good are theAloo Mutter, Dal Turka, Ghobi Gulastan andChana Masala. Get it with the ButterNaan and Basmati Rice!"

Nhu Lan Bakery

Bakery · Ravenswood

"Nhu Lan Bakery, Lincoln Square. A great lunch spot, Nhu Lan is a teeny tiny Vietnamese bakery who makes the best Banh Mi sandwiches around town, and for only $4.95! It’s really small inside—only 3 tables—so take your sandwiches to go and have a picnic in Welles Park. Our favorites are the #3 Lemongrass Chicken (Ga) the #4 Grilled Pork (Thit Nuong) sandwiches. Get them with everything on it—cilantro, cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon (radish) and jalapeno. Their bread is amazing... it's baked fresh daily and has a soft crunch on the outside with a very fluffy inside. For drinks, they make fresh fruit smoothies, bubble tea, Vietnamese Iced Coffee or Thai Iced Tea."

Davis Theater, Chicago

Movie theater · Ravenswood

"Davis Theater, Lincoln Square. This theater is a neighborhood favorite and has been featuring flicks since 1916. In celebration of it's 100th year in 2016, they remodeled every inch of the theater to restore it back to its glory but with all the modern amenities like comfy seats and toilets you're not afraid to sit on. With only 3theaters, it’s one of the few operating neighborhood movie theaters in Chicago. They mostly show new releases, with the occasional second run of older films, and there's a concession stand too. Alongside the remodel, they bought the space next door and turned it into a bar and restaurant called Carbon Arc. It's a great spot for dinner or drinks before or after a movie. The Davis and Carbon Arc are as local and independentas it gets here."

Miku Sushi

Japanese restaurant · Ravenswood

"Miku, Lincoln Square. Miku is a great restaurant for all Japanese food lovers. Serving sushi traditional-style in a modern and cozy atmosphere, they offer hot or cold small plates, big plates, ramen, skewers, nigiri and sashimi, and all types of maki rolls. Any of their maki rolls make miso happy—especially the Dragon roll. If you're into ramen like us, their Tonkotsu ramen is honestly the best ramen we've had in Chicago, and our friends agree! If you happen to go in the month ofMarch, they celebrate "National Noodle Month" by discounting their ramen dishes to $8 each instead of the normal $13-14 prices. If you go during the day, they have some really great lunch specials. Sit at the sushi bar, at one of the tables or out on the front patio that runs along Lincoln Ave. Tip: It's best to make a reservation if you go at night. Also, they're no longer a BYOB, so leave that wine at home to enjoy later."

Gather

American restaurant · Ravenswood

"Gather, Lincoln Square. Gather is our favorite restaurant in Lincoln Square. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love it. If you’re not a foodie, you’ll love it. Great food, great cocktails, huge wine list, great atmosphere and excellent service. Dine inside or outside on their terrace. The food can be a family-style experience where you order small plates and share. But if you don’t want to share, you can go solo and get a larger plate. We’ve never had a bad dish here, so anything is up for grabs. If you listen to mom and eat your leafy greens, we highly recommend the crispy brussel sprouts as a side to any dish. The tagliatelle and grilled sirloin are both really great. They also have a great brunch on Sundays and are known for their sticky buns. Tip: Make sure you have a reservation before you go. They're booked 1-2 weeks in advance at normal dinner times. Also, their dishes are pretty, but they taste their best when you stir everything together on the plate. Enjoy—we know you will!"

Welles (Gideon) Park

Park · Ravenswood

"Welles Park, Lincoln Square. Set in the heart of Lincoln Square is Welles Park and it doesn’t cost a thing! Here you can hang out on a 15-acre lawn with big trees, ballfields, a gazebo, sand volleyball court, 2 playgrounds, 3 tennis courts, horseshoe pits and plenty of space to call your own. We like coming here to enjoy some time outdoors, lay on a blanket and watch the clouds go by or have a picnic and play cards with friends. People watching is at its best here, especially when the older gents have gathered for their weekly game of bocce ball. You might even see an outdoor concert, live storytelling or performances being held at the gazebo. There's a cute little crepe stand on the North end of the park, along Sunnyside Ave, open April-October, 7 days a week! The hot dog guy is sometimes there—you can find him on the South side of the park.along Montrose Ave.Welles Park is also home to the Square Roots festival, an annual summer outdoor/indoor music fest in July with all the things you look forward to like craft beer, corn dogs and snow cones."

Taco In A Bag

Permanently Closed

"Taco In A Bag, Lincoln Square. This place reminds us of something you’d find in Logan Square or LA. It’s super casual with an urban vibe and really great food. The name is what you get—a taco in a bag. The taco is actually gourmet nachos, at the bottom of the bag. They pile on unexpected ingredients like beer braised ground beef or citrus braised pork shoulder, house made dijonnaise, toasted fennel, parmesan crust and more. Our favorites are The Cuban (pictured) and The Noberto. Fun fact: The 2 owners, "Deep Dish" and "Gravy Brown", are currently the #2 and #9 ranked competitive eaters in the world.Tip: Eat it there or as soon as you leave because if it sits for too long, the nachos get soggy."

Laurie's Planet of Sound

Music store · Ravenswood

"Laurie's Planet of Sound, Lincoln Square. Rated one of the best record stores in the USA by Rolling Stone Magazine. This store isn’t at all picked over. They’re known for a stellar new and used inventory with so many great options to choose from, probably because they're really picky with what they buy/sell. You'll find artists like the Beatles, Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, Modest Mouse, Nick Cave, Sharon Van Etten, Of Monsters & Men, Otis Redding, etc. Aside from records, they also sell new and used CDs, movies on DVD and VHS, books and games (they have more types of Monopoly games than we knew ever existed)."

Paciugo

Permanently Closed

"Paciugo, Lincoln Square. Excuse us, but their gelato is fucking amazing. Their recipes come from the Founder who practiced and perfected her skills in one of the finest gelaterias in Turin, Italy. Tucked away behind the fountain in Lincoln Square, this geletaria and coffee shop offers so many flavors of gelato that you’ll stand there for a while making a decision, holding up the line and making your friends uncomfortable. It’s ok. We do it too. Their gelato and sorbetti is made the traditional Italian way, with the freshest fruits and all-natural ingredients. Plus, it has 70% less fat than ice cream, so now you have the excuse you’ve been looking for."

Lincoln Square - Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

Pizza Takeout · North Center

"Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Lincoln Square. It's true. This is the best deep dish pizza in all of Chicago. Not Gino's East or Giordano's like tourists tend to think. Located right on the edge of Lincoln Square and North Center, Lou Malnati's opened their 42nd location here in May 2015, and we couldn’t be happier! The walls are retractable and open during the warmer days. We love both their thin crust and deep dish, but they're known for their deep dish. It has a buttery crust, cheese layered in the middle and sweet chunky tomato sauce piled on top. They have a big bar and plenty of seating, both inside and out. Eat in or take it to-go and eat it in Welles Park right across the street. After, walk over to Tiny Lounge for a cocktail or two.Tip: If you order sausage, there are two different types they use. 'Sausage Pieces' which is crumbled sausage that's sprinkled all over or 'Sausage' which is a thick solid sheet of sausage that's laid on top."

The Grind Cafe

Permanently Closed

"The Grind, Lincoln Square. A small coffee shop, but not a small menu. Whatever kind of coffee drink you like, they have it, and take so much pride and care in making it. Hungry? Try one of their donuts, pastries or quiches. Or if you're looking for lunch, try one of their sandwiches or salads and top it off with a cupcake or slice of pie. It's an excellent place to go on a Saturday morning, to kill time before/after a movie, or while you're waiting for a table. If it's nice out, take your treats outside to enjoy their patio."

ENJOY Lincoln Square

Gift shop · Lincoln Square

"Enjoy, An Urban General Store, Lincoln Square. Who doesn’t “enjoy” a store with sass? This store is full of kitsch. We love going here for their sometimes crass and smile-inducing line of greeting cards (usually really well-designed). Here, you can find anything related to baby + kids, art + inspiration, home + office, and novelty + humor. To give you an idea, their novelty items include things like like “Maybe You Touched Your Genitals” hand sanitizer, “A Guide to What Men Know About Feelings” book and “Fuck This Shit” socks. There's also things like art prints and signs, notebooks, candles, home accessories and baby goods."

"Pannenkoeken, Lincoln Square. A tiny cafe with only 7 tables who makes fresh Dutch pancakes! It's like you're transported to Amsterdam. Offering a dozen or so pannenkoekens—either savory or sweet—this little breakfast spot usually has a wait, but it’s well worth it. Write your name/number on the list and explore some of the shops nearby—they’ll call you when your table’s ready. We’ve tried the french toast and both savory and sweet pancakes. Our favorites are the Apple Pannenkoeken or Chococlate Banana Pannenkoeken. The portion is huge and you will eat it all. Also, get the orange juice. It's fresh-squeezed! You can see them put about 6 oranges in a machine that spits out 1 cup just for you. This is definitely a hidden gem in Lincoln Square, since the entrance is not on the main strip. Because there’s so few tables, they want you in and out so the next customer can enjoy a meal. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of coffee shops in the hood where you can sit and chat to your heart’s desire. Tip: It's cash only!"

District

Furniture store · Ravenswood

"District, Lincoln Square. There's definitely a MadMen-esque vibe to this place, complete with a liquor cart and a bottle of whiskey to go with it. This shop collects some of the best pieces from the 1950s and 60s, some showing wear but never tear. They sell these beauties alongside modern accessories. We especially love their plant stands, which happen to be custom-made by District themselves. Here, you'll find things like pillows, tables, old metal letters, deer heads, sofas, artwork, lamps and a sweet Charles Eames lounge chair. Since most things are one-of-a-kind, their inventory is always changing. So what you see here may be there today, gone tomorrow!Be sure to check out Alapash next door."

Huettenbar

Permanently Closed

"Huettenbar, Lincoln Square. Feels like it’s straight out of Germany and always a good time. Lincoln Square is a german-influenced neighborhood and this bar fits right in with its german beers and spirits. It has an old world charm and feels like it’s been there since the Chicago fire, but it was established in 1985. It's always crowded, but a good kind of crowded with great people. The enormous front windows are almost always open, where you can sit on stools and watch the action on Lincoln Ave. During Lincoln Square’s two festivals, Maifest and Octoberfest, this bar becomes a focal point of the festivities. Tip: There’s no food here—only drinks—so don’t come hungry."

Merz Apothecary

Pharmacy · Lincoln Square

"Merz Apothecary, Lincoln Square. This apothecary is the real deal. They have a 140-year-old history and have grown through 5 generations. It’s not your average drugstore—they focus on herbal medicines and natural products using organic ingredients. From ice bags to skincare to perfume to salves and everything in-between, they have it all. They claim to have the largest collection of natural and luxury soaps from around the world under one roof. If you’re ever looking for a rare pharmaceutical product, they will most likely have it. Have an ailment? Talk to their staff and they will happily help you find something for the cure. Connected to Merz is their newest addition, Q Brothers, a men's shop with all the products men could need to care for their hairy bods."

"Gene's Sausage Shop, Lincoln Square. We might be biased about this one since we did their branding, but the people agree—this shop is two thumbs up! They’re a gourmet delicatessen and European market in the heart of Lincoln Square. We shop here regularly—they have just about anything you could need to make a meal at home. Their meat counter always has a wait, but it’s so worth it. Aside from chicken, beef and pork, they offer 40 varieties of homemade, natural wood-smoked sausage. Our favorite is the Alpine sausage—grab a long link and grill it up at home. Get a side of cooked sauerkraut and cucumber salad to go with it. If you’d rather have someone cook you lunch here, they will! Make your way to the roof and enjoy a German-style lunch on their deck, complete with a bar and grill, picnic tables and lounge chairs. We encourage you to support these guys—they're family-owned and terrific people."

Bistro Campagne

French restaurant · Ravenswood

"Bistro Campagne, Lincoln Square. This French bistro is an always popular spot in Lincoln Square. People all over Chicago seem to know it and it never disappoints. Don’t take our word for it—they have a 4.4 star rating on OpenTable out of 1,642 reviews! If you’re looking for a fancier experience, this place is it. The tables are dressed with linen and the food is upscale and quite delicious. The chefs try to capture and express the same quality found in favorite small neighborhood bistros found in Paris and rural France. If it’s warm out, try to grab a spot in their garden. It’s absolutely gorgeous and makes you feel like you just traveled to a far away land. Stay there into the dark and sip cocktails under the strings of lights hanging from the trees. It’s a great romantic spot for date night."

Oromo Cafe

Cafe · Lincoln Square

"Oromo Cafe, Lincoln Square. There's a few coffee shops in Lincoln Square—The Grind being a favorite—but the newest to the caffeine scene is Oromo Cafe. What makes them different is that they're nutty about milk, literally. They make alineup of house-made nut milks, free of artificial sugars and blended with "superfoods".The proprietary milks, made daily, start with the raw base nut—pistachio, pecan, almond or hazelnut. After a good night's soak in filtered water, the nuts are blended, thenmeticulously strainedbefore adding a touch of vanilla and raw organic coconut sugar. They're servedstraight or withaddedspices, herbs and fruits. Some interesting concoctions are made from this like themaple maca, pecan latte and an espresso flavored with pistachio milk and rose. Their pastries and cakes are also not to miss."

We haven't had a piercing done here, but I went in recently to scope out theirjewelry for my nose piercing. They have a great selection of pretty unique pieces, and at a very high quality. The Warbler

"The Warbler, Lincoln Square. The Warbler is the nextbrainchild from the owners ofGather, located right next door. The design of the place is awesome—both the interior and branding—and both were done by a husband and wife team. Their cocktails are excellent and all are $11 each. You can't go wrong with the Bird's Nest. If you're looking for a starter, the cauliflower is awesome. Oh and the bacon & egg flatbread is one of the best things on the menu. The cedar roasted salmon and roasted half chicken are also excellent. Just make sure you leave room for dessert. They have a skillet cookie! What's that you ask? It's an oven-baked cookie in a hot skillet with vanilla ice cream on top. It's ooey and gooey, just how belly likes it."

The Thorne Miniature Rooms, located in the lower level just after entry, feature 68 rooms with impeccable detail and scale. From English Great Halls to California Living Rooms, it is easy to get lost in the intricacies of these unbelievable interiors. The Chicago Stock Exchange is equally as impressive. When the original Stock Exchange was demolished in 1972, sections of elaborate stenciled decorations, molded plaster capitals, and art glass were preserved from the Trading Room. Old Town Ale House

Bar · Old Town

"Old Town Ale House, Old Town. The longstanding central heart beat of the Old Town neighborhood is most definitely the Old Town Ale House. Open since 1958, the Ale House is home to regulars and new faces alike, and its location directly across the street from The Second City makes it a watering hole for local comedians. Owner Bruce Elliot is famous for the politically charged, and quite raunchy, paintings he creates that line the walls of the Ale House. If you're looking to grab a beer, listen to some Muddy Waters, and experience a true Chicago landmark then the Old Town Ale House is for you."

821 W 19th St

Basketball court · Pilsen

"Ghost Church, Pilsen. One day exploring the neighborhood, I happened upon a local ruin. The facade of an old church caught my eye because something was not normal. Light was pouring through the windows and doors. Turned out it was just a facade and all else had been excavated. A little research revealed the Podmajersky company that started rehabbing old buildings as artist lofts years ago, created this destination within the blocks of Pilsen for everyone. They "saved" the Evangelical Lutheran church at at 19th and Peoria by stripping it of its stained glass windows, altar, pews, and back and side walls leaving only its facade and spirit. It is lovely and works every bit like a church should."

We're working ... you know."

Textile Discount Outlet

Fabric store · Heart of Chicago

"Textile Discount Outlet, Pilsen. So this choice is not just a great Pilsen find, but a great Chicago find. It is room after room of fabric the likes of which JoAnne has never even seen. There are odd ends of rolls, embellishments and fixins that give you a hunting experience similar to thrifting. This is where fashion students start and Chicago designers have been coming for years. It's a cavern of a warehouse overflowing with unique and affordable textiles."

"Honky Tonk BBQ, Pilsen. Great BBQ and live music all week. That's the draw. Honkey Tonk is a 2fer. I'm no BBQ connoisseur, but Ihave tried most everything on the menu and found all of it pretty awesome. Get the brisket chili that comes with mac & cheese in it."

Skylark

Bar · East Pilsen

"Skylark, Pilsen. Outside, Skylark has kind of a steer-clear-of-me look, but inside is a dark neighborhood spot without any posers. Just good people, good beers and surprisingly great food too. Can't skip the tater tots with 3 dipping sauces."

Dia De Los Tamales

Permanently Closed

"Dia De Los Tamales, Pilsen. Its hard to call what Dia puts out as street food. While they are corn husk wrapped, the fillings are anything but expected and super delicious. They are stuffed with unconventional, globally-flavored fillings such as roasted pepper and goat cheese, coconut curry chicken, and even chocolate peanut butter. These are chef-made tamales with farm sourced ingredients, not the mom-made ones (also super delicious and worth a try) found on many of the corners around here."

Cafe Jumping Bean

Cafe · Pilsen

"Cafe Jumping Bean, Pilsen. Easily the most charming coffee shop in the neighborhood ... also one of the oldest. It's the perfect place to park yourself among original locals as well as the newer more arty ones. They also serve a great lunch and can get their fancy on with a green tea latte if you need that. Coffee without the coffee pretense."

Cantón Regio

Sitting at the bar you can enjoy one of their manysignature cocktails, or choose from theirselection of sakes."

Pleasant House Pub

Pub · East Pilsen

"Pleasant House Pub, Pilsen. The Pleasant House Pub is one of the most unique places you'll find in Pilsen due to its British roots. Owner Art Jackson grew up in a cottage of the same name (minus the pub, of course) in Yorkshire, England before starting the eatery with his wife in 2011. The pub specializes in English Royal Pies—delectable, savory pies made with fresh meat and vegetables. Whether you're just sitting at the bar for a drink or sharing a meal with a group of friends, the charm of the Pleasant House cannot elude you. It's a little piece of England right here in Pilsen, and I can't wait to go back and try a new flavor of Royal Pie."

The Drifter

Lounge · River North

"The Drifter, River North. In the Roaring Twenties, a green door at the front of a restaurant signified to rule breakers that there was a speakeasy inside. The Green Door Tavern’s secret bar has been closed for years - until recently. Behind a bookcase in the basement, you will find The Drifter - a club located in the only remaining speakeasy room from the twenties. Patrons will find classic cocktails and live performances that hearken back to days in Chicago when Capone ran the streets and the Everley sisters ran the sheets."

Three Dots and a Dash

Cocktail bar · Near North Side

"Three Dots and a Dash, River North. Listed as one of the best bars in the world by Drinks International, Three Dots and a Dash makes you feel as if you've been transported to a Hawaiian luau. Don't be fooled by drink names, like Bunny's Banana Daiquiri. These drinks are strong. Going out with a crowd? Three Dots has drinks to share. Giant seashells, treasure chests, and skulls are filled with exotic rum cocktails accented with brightly colored straws, cocktail umbrellas, flaming limes, and orchids. Three Dots and a Dash is a bar that should not be missed in River North - although the alley entrance off Clark street is very missable. To find this spot, go down the alley behind XOCO (one of our other recommendations)."

The Green Door Tavern

Pub · River North

"The Green Door Tavern, River North. Sure it’s not the hippest River North spot, but you’d be a fool not to grab a whiskey at one of Chicago’s oldest drinking establishments. The building itself dates from 1872, a year after the Great Chicago Fire fizzled cold (not the sports team kids). Its status as a beloved neighborhood watering hole dates from 1921. A speakeasy during prohibition, grabbing a cocktail today is a little less subversive of an activity – although a trip downstairs to The Drifter keeps the spirit of that tumultuous era alive and well (see our post on The Drifter).Timelessness beats trendiness any day of the week."

Club Lago

Italian restaurant · River North

"Club Lago, River North. Club Lago is your old-school neighborhood Italian joint. The story goes that Club Lago opened its doors in 1952 to provide Northern Italian cuisine to the paper salesmen and printers who worked in the warehouse district. Now in a neighborhood of galleries and loft offices, the restaurant's third generation owners, Giancarlo and Guido, have continued the family traditions of quality cooking and friendly service. This charming restaurant sticks with the classics: red-checkered table cloths and spaghetti and meatballs. Buon appetito."

"Artisan Cellar, River North. This quaint sandwich shop is a gourmet lunch destination that will transport you to Tuscany. The Artisan Cellar knows how to do panini’s with 75 artisan cheeses, perfectly paired Italian cured meats, tangy spreads such as sun dried tomato tapenade and pesto genovese, all served on on a crispy ciabatta roll. As the "cellar" in its name indicates, it also serves as a wine shop with complimentary tastings every Friday from 4-6pm."

BIG & little's Restaurant

Permanently Closed

"Big & Little’s, River North. We have no idea where the name originates, but if we had to guess it's because you go in little and leave big. Either way, when it comes to delicious food your trainer will hate you for- Big & Littles isn't messing around. Banh mi taco? Check. Fish tacos so fresh you'll start hearing waves? Double check."

Bohemian House

Permanently Closed

"Bohemian House, River North. Bohemian culture first emerged in Europe as a way to describe the lifestyles of anti-establishment artists, writers, musicians, and actors living a free spirited, deconstructed lifestyle. It's fitting that a place like Bohemian House has found a home in River North, a neighborhood made famous through its artistic community. Enjoy the restaurant's eclectic decor and carefree essence while sipping on cocktails derived from traditional European recipes. The dinner menu, which is constantly shifting to reflect what's in season, is not one to miss. La vie boheme!"

Broken Shaker at Freehand Chicago

Cocktail bar · Near North Side

"Broken Shaker, River North. Broken Shaker is a tiki transplant from Miami complete with a giant bandana-wearing octopus mural, whom some call “Tupactopus”. Nestled within the Freehand Hotel, the vibe is utterly cool with a tropical flair. The bar is known for their warm weather cocktail menu that emphasizes dark spirits. Standouts include the Banana Rum Manhattan and a Cocoa Puff Old Fashioned made with cereal-infused bourbon. Who wouldn’t want their drink to taste like chocolatey breakfast cereal?"

Hannah's Bretzel

Sandwich shop · River North

"Hannah’s Bretzel, River North. Hannah's Bretzel isn't your average grab and go sandwich shop. For one thing, they've absolutely perfected the art of the pretzel bun (bretzel, get it?). For another, all the menu items are organic and made sustainably, with total transparency on nutrition. There is something for everyone - even if you've banned gluten from your diet."

Restaurant · River North

"The Kitchen, River North. The Kitchen is a sophisticated American brasserie that has incredible views of the Chicago River. This perfect date spot offers a seafood selection that will not disappoint: caviar, fresh mussels, oysters and lobster, just to name a few. Oh, and did we mention The Kitchen was cofounded by Elon Musk's brother, Kimbal Musk?"

Rossi's

Bar · Near North Side

"Rossi’s, River North. Rossi’s is not your typical River North bar. At first glance, Rossi's looks like a rundown liquor store, but step inside and prepare to be greeted by PBRs and a few longtime regulars. Rossi’s cheap drinks, old-school juke box, dimly lit interior and small, friendly environment add to its charm."

XOCO

Mexican restaurant · Near North Side

"Xoco, River North. Xoco—pronounced “SHO-ko”—is the brainchild of prolific chef of Mexican cuisine, Rick Bayless. We can personally testify that every single one of Xoco’s steaming hot caldos have the ability to cure the common cold, and nothing beats their churros after a night out on Hubbard. Just make sure the staff isn’t away on a field trip to Mexico before you go. That can be a real let down—albeit a testament to the authenticity of their plates."

"Indie Cafe, Rogers Park Edgewater. Thai and Japanese food with a modern twist. Stop by this delicious BYOB joint and fill up on everything on the menu."

Uncommon Ground

Permanently Closed

"Uncommon Ground, Rogers Park Edgewater. Home of the 1st Certified Organic Roof Top Farm in the US, Uncommon Ground is anything but common. Their menu changes by location and season, with many items coming from their own production. For Uncommon Ground, sustainability is the key. Even down to the cooking oil used to cook their food, which is donated used by local students to create biodiesel fuel. And one last thing, they brew their own organic beer."

Heartland Cafe

Permanently Closed

"Heartland Cafe, Rogers Park Edgewater. Originally opened as the "Sweet Home Chicago Heartland Café" the Heartland cafe is an unabashedly eclectic joint featuring a range of (mostly) vegetarian options, live music, and a small grocery store featuring organic fruits and vegetables and locally sourced, hormone free meats. This neighborhood restaurant and bar has been been a staple for generations and doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. Also be sure to check out the Miles of Murals just outside it's doors."

The Waterfront Cafe

Cafe · Edgewater Beach

"Waterfront Cafe & Berger Park, Rogers Park Edgewater. Looking for a snack and a drink? How about an uninterrupted view of Lake Michigan? What about a park for the kids to play in? According to the project founders, in their almost 10 years, the project has covered over 14,000 square feet of walls with murals by local artists. Varying in size, style, and message, each mural is worth exploring."

The New 400 Theater

Permanently Closed

"The New 400 Theaters, Rogers Park Edgewater. Sometimes the best way to see a movie on the big screen isn't to see it in a theatre with 200 Lay-Z-Boy seats, a 40 foot tall screen, a sound system ready to deafen. Sometimes a small room with a couple dozen chairs, a projector, and a box of popcorn is all you need. The new 400 cinemas is a great way to get away for a movie without all the distractions or the cost that comes with them."

Moody's Pub

Restaurant · Magnolia Glen

"Moody's Pub, Rogers Park Edgewater. Home of the Moody Burger, if you've been to Rogers Park before, you've probably heard of this epic spot. Founded in 1959, Moody's has been a staple to the neighborhood for decades. Take your pick of the dark, fire-lit dining room or the shady outdoor patio to enjoy their classic pub fare. And if you find yourself outside on a warm summer day, be sure to grab a pitcher of the sangria to help break the heat. You won't regret it."

With a friendly staff and a even friendlier prices, Double Bubble is one of those bars that you visit once and know you'll be back."

"Metropolis Coffee Company, Rogers Park Edgewater. When you want good coffee and can't have good coffee it sucks. Lucky for you, Metropolis has been serving Chicago with delicious blends and friendly baristas from their Roger's Park shop since 2007. Come on in, warm up or cool down with a delicious beverage from one of Chicago's best independent Coffee Roasters."

Taste of Peru

Peruvian restaurant · Rogers Park

"Taste of Peru, Rogers Park Edgewater. If you aren't already familiar with Peruvian food, stop now and head to Taste of Peru. There's no better place to start. A true taste of the mix of South American, Asian, and African influences that make up the national cuisine of this large South American country, TOP serves a wide range of dishes beyond just ceviche."

Cunneen's

Bar · Rogers Park

"Cunneen's, Rogers Park Edgewater. This may just be the perfect bar. Just the right mix of dive and neighborhood watering hole, Cunneen's bar is that spot you can always count on for an affordable cold beer, a game of pool, and a calm atmosphere with some good tunes. It's the perfect place to meet up with friends, old or new, to chat for hours or just a few minutes. Just be sure to keep that card in your pocket because this joint is strictly cash only."

Armadillo's Pillow Inc

Used book store · Rogers Park

"Armadillo’s Pillow, Rogers Park Edgewater. Because who doesn't love a good read? Armadillo's pillow is the bookstore you've always dreamt of. With a wide selection of genres to choose from, in an even larger number of stacks, you'll always be able to stumble onto something new or old that tickles your fancy. Maybe that philosophy text you've heard so much about or that classic novel that you've never taken the time to read. Whatever it is, you'll find it here."

Hartigan Beach Park

Park · Rogers Park

"Hartigan Beach Park (aka Loyola Beach), Rogers Park Edgewater. Chicago is lucky to be home to a large and beautiful lakefront. With green space for miles, most of us pack onto the beach in those short summer months to enjoy some rays and a quick dip in the lake. But what if you could have all that without the crowds? Look no further. Hartigan Beach is hidden at the end of Albion Ave. just north of Loyola's campus. With the students gone for the summer, this beach is a great hide away for an afternoon with a good book, a cold drink, and a lot of time to kill.(Just make sure to get there before the frost hits. I wasn't so lucky...)"

La Unica Food Mart

Latin American restaurant · Edgewater

"La Unica, Rogers Park Edgewater. Lunch from a grocery store? That's what most people say. But once you've had that first bite, you'll forget that you're sipping from a Jarritos at a table tucked down the aisle from where you were looking at cans of diced tomatoes a few moments before. Serving a host of pan-American dishes, La Unica, is the go-to spot in Roger's Park for a toasty Cuban Sandwich or a warm plate of Mole. Try some of their Colombian or Cuban specialties to start and be sure to finish with a slice of gooey Flan."

Mayne Stage

Permanently Closed

"Mayne Stage, Rogers Park Edgewater. A beautiful independent concert venue and bar, doing it right. Expect to see nationally touring acts as well as some of Chicago's own gracing the stage at the Mayne."

Gino's North

Pizza restaurant · Edgewater Beach

"Gino's North, Rogers Park Edgewater. A staple to students and neighborhood veterans, Gino's provides some of the best thin crust pizza around. Just a few steps away from the Granville "el" stop you won't be able to miss it, or its Comic-Sans sign. (Trust me, the pizza makes the font choice forgivable)"

Independent Spirits, Inc.

Liquor store · Edgewater

"Independent Spirits, Inc., Rogers Park Edgewater. Specialists in the rare, small, and hard-to-find, Independent Spirits is the go-to spot to get that bottle of small batch beer you've been looking for. Fancy a cocktail or that sweet vermouth you tried in the mediterranean? How about a glass of wine? Feel free to step in to their weekly wine tastings every Friday at 5."

Sovereign Liquors

Bar · Edgewater

"Sovereign Liquors, Rogers Park Edgewater. A classic dive bar. Cheap drinks, good people, and a friendly vibe to chat with friends. Doesn't need to be more complicated than that. Also, order a PBR and guess the "card" under the cap and you get the beer for free. Yeah, it's a damn good dive bar"

Lickity Split Frozen Custard

Ice cream shop · North Edgewater

"Lickity Split Frozen Custard & Sweets, Rogers Park Edgewater. Have a sweet tooth? Step on in to grab a scoop of ice cream or a creamy cupcake. You can even take a step back in time to the days of the soda fountain with their wide selection of specialty drinks. And if you're a fan of candy, take a stroll along the wall of gummies and chocolates. These guys specialize in providing everything sweet under the sun."

Sportsman's Club

Bar · Humboldt Park

"Sportsman's Club, Ukrainian Village. If Sportsman’s Club, which opened in late-2013, feels like it’s been around forever, it’s because in a certain way – it has. The name is a nod to the immigrant establishment that originally inhabited the current address, including the beautiful art deco bar from which the knowledgeably laid-back mixologists will pour you drinks. Order your favorite cocktail or order one of the four on offer from the daily menu. Don’t let the casual attitude, vintage taxidermy or $4 High Lifes on the patio fool you – drinks here are taken seriously. Bar Manager Jacyara de Oliveira was named as a Food & Wine "Best New Mixologist" in 2014."

The Winchester

Permanently Closed

"The Winchester, Ukrainian Village. We love The Winchester for any occasion, plain and simple. Its airy Scandanavian aesthetic makes it a no-brainer for mid-week coffee meetings and its stellar kitchen puts their own seasonal stamp on breakfast, lunch and dinner. And don’t even get us started on weekend brunch. Their simple bar is neatly stocked for subtly complex cocktails (such as the Skippin’ Town: mezcal, Cocchi Americano, lemon, pineapple syrup, Ancho Reyes) – but no one will raise an eyebrow if you opt for rosé instead. We’ve even been known to pop in simply for one of their Leige waffles. Given a yeasty overnight rise and dusting of pearlized sugar, they’re more cookie than waffle – and as craveable as The Winchester itself."

Inside Home Ltd

Furniture store · East Ukrainian Village

"Inside Home, Ukrainian Village. We’re not afraid to admit it: we’re window shoppers. And our favorite place in the 'hood to peek in has to be Inside Home. The store is packed with mid-century treasures and a masculine Hollywood Regency vibe. Their constantly-rotating displays act as a constant source of inspiration (and of course, envy)."

Black Dog Gelato

Ice cream shop · East Ukrainian Village

"Black Dog Gelato, Ukrainian Village. Black Dog Gelato is the brainchild of evil dairy genius Jessi Orolo. They’ve since opened a second location in Lakeview, but their original scoop shop in Ukrainian Village remains a perennial summer favorite. The cash-only spot has an ever rotating selection of flavors (written daily on the window) including standouts such as goat cheese cashew caramel and blueberry french toast. Take a cone to go or sit outside on the dog-friendly patio. And if you’re looking to bring some home, they offer good deals on day-old pints (if you’re lucky enough to get there early)."

Trattoria Ultimo

Permanently Closed

"Trattoria Ultimo, Ukrainian Village. They’ll offer a paper menu at Trattoria Ultimo, a little slice of rustic Florence right on Chicago Ave., but you won’t need it. The stars of the show will be presented table side courtesy of the constantly-changing chalkboard which will feature a range of appetizers (recently rosemary-flecked chicken liver paté and housemade blue crab ravioli), entrees, and fresh pastas. As in Italy, seasonality heavily influences the menu – in late-October we were treated to a simple bowl of taglioni and cherry tomatoes generously covered with freshly shaved black Burgundy truffles. There’s no bar, but bring a bottle of wine (or three) to enjoy with your meal for a small corkage fee."

Homestead On The Roof

New American restaurant · East Ukrainian Village

"Homestead, Ukrainian Village. Because it boasts its own rooftop garden, Homestead describes itself as “a literal farm-to-table restaurant.” And it’s probably one of the few farm-to-table restaurants that you have to walk through a pizza place to get to. Located above Roots Pizza, it truly is a respite from the big-screen TVs and carb overloads to be had downstairs. The ever-changing menu always offers some unexpected pleasures. For example, the summer panzanella shown below featured house made sourdough, smoked tropea onions, burrata, preserved kale and burnt leek vinaigrette alongside the marinated tomatoes. And during the summer months, you may enjoy dinner outside in the large rooftop garden."

BoeufHaus

Steak house · Humboldt Park

"Boeufhaus, Ukrainian Village. There’s no denying that Boeufhaus is a steakhouse experience. Opened in a former butcher shop in early-2015, it’s the only restaurant in the area where you’ll find 55 day dry-aged ribeyes. But it’s a not a rowdy downtown steakhouse full of expense accounts and overpriced baked potatoes – it’s a neighborhood spot with a thoughtfully executed menu. Start off dinner with an order of shortrib beignets and a dozen oysters (you won’t find those anywhere else in Ukrainian Village). Or stop by for lunch, where you can get a sandwich and a draft beer for $15."

Paperish Mess

Gift shop · West Town

"Paperish Mess, Ukrainian Village. This is a little neighborhood treasure. The front of the store is dedicated to jewelry from indie makers and the back offers cards, posters and Chicago-centric goods of all sorts. In all, products from over 100 local artists are presented. It’s our go-to whether we’re looking for a last minute gift or a box of locally-printed thank you cards. At times, the shop functions as a gallery as well."

Tuman's Tap and Grill

Bar & grill · West Town

"Tuman's, Ukrainian Village. For better or for worse, Tuman’s is no longer the sentimental dive bar it was prior to 2003. When it closed it lost its portentous ‘Alcohol Abuse Center’ sign, underwent a number of renovations, and depending who you talk to, lost its character. We were 16 when that happened. As it stands, we’re more than happy to have an easy place to grab a beer (off of one of 28 ever-changing draft lines), throw down on some gastropubby food (custom-ground Slagel Family Farm beef burger with a shallot-port reduction) and play a little shuffleboard."

Tarnish

Boutique · East Ukrainian Village

"Tarnish, Ukrainian Village. Of the many eclectic boutiques that live in this city, Tarnish might take the cake as one of the raddest. But, one would expect nothing less out of a boutique designed with biker babes in mind. You are greeted by bright geometric prints, vintage chunky belt buckles, and a wall of motorcycle helmets; warm soul and hard grit in perfect tandem. You leave Tarnish every time feeling like you just got a bit cooler, smelling faintly of stiff authentic leather. Well, at least we do; you go see for yourself."

701 N Damen Ave

Building · West Town

"Bar Deville, Ukrainian Village. Ukranian Village has some great cocktails, if you know where to find them. Luckily, we’re steps away from Bar DeVille, the part cocktail lounge/pool hall/dance club that boasts a vast array of delicious spirits to keep your ABV from dropping too low. Come early to grab a spot at the pool table and stay late to cut a rug or two. Pro tip: Do not spend your money on the Photo Booth. Just sayin’."

Rainbo Club

Bar · Ukrainian Village

"Rainbo Club, Ukrainian Village. Rainbo Club is a Chicago tradition. Simple as that. Somehow, the quintessential dive bar has gained a favorable reputation with just about every Chicagoan you’ll meet (don’t fact check us on Yelp...). Maybe it’s the pinball machine and arcade games? Or the $2 PBR drafts? Or the eclectic rotating art installations that grace its walls? For us, it’s gotta be the $3 old school photo booth that produces the best b+w tones you’ll see on any Photo Booth in the city."

Asado Coffee Roasters

Permanently Closed

"Asado Coffee Roasters, Ukrainian Village. Ukrainian Village is lucky enough to be sandwiched in between two stellar coffee roasters: Dark Matter to the West and Asado to the East. When we need our cortado fix though, we find ourselves heading to Asado. They have three locations around the city, though it’s this one that roasts for their downtown location as well. They were the first shop in the city to exclusively pour over coffees and they’re no slouch in the espresso department, either. It’s always easy to find seating in the bright, minimal space and if you stop in at the right time, you may get treated to the smell of freshly roasting beans."

Mr. Brown's Lounge

Permanently Closed

"Mr. Brown's Lounge, Ukrainian Village. Say what you want about the culinary scene in Chicago, but the north-side has a serious lack of Jamaican food. Don’t worry mon, UKV’s Mr. Brown’s Lounge has got your back. Serving up a wicked assortment of jerk spices, curried meats and rum paired with a non-stop rotation of reggae tunes, Mr. Brown’s Lounge is worth the trip. We prefer Tuesday’s Jerk Chicken special for $9 and a few rounds of Red Stripe, but we’ve heard great things about the late night DJ sets as well."

959 N Western Ave

Building · Ukrainian Village

"Leghorn Chicken, Ukrainian Village. To order a fried chicken sandwich at Leghorn, you’ve got three decisions to make: Nashville-style hot or classic pickle-brined fried chicken. Breast or thigh. Bun or housemade buttermilk biscuit. Dress it up with your choice of fixin’s. Add some fries or green chile hushpuppies. Bring your own booze if you fancy (but don't forget to bring cash). This is what Chick-Fil-A might look (and taste) like if it wasn't run by a bunch of homophobic bible thumpers."

Roots Handmade Pizza - West Town

Restaurant · East Ukrainian Village

"Roots Handmade Pizza, Ukrainian Village. Chicago has a pretty big reputation to uphold when it comes to pizza - besides a killer hotdog, good pizza is one culinary expectation of this city. Roots has dodged the critics by taking a Quad Cities spin on pizza, even amidst the deep dish fame of traditional Chicago style 'za. By using dark roasted malt in their crust, they create a thick, sweet, and marvelous base for some delicious pie concoctions. It’s not traditional – but it’s a treat. Their “midwest is best” mentality may not be seen any better than their constantly updated draft lists from the Chicago-area’s heaviest hitting breweries (Pipeworks, Three Floyds). This is without a doubt the best spot in the neighborhood to grab a limited release beer."

Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral

Eastern Orthodox Church · Ukrainian Village

"Holy Trinity Cathedral, Ukrainian Village. If you’re up for a little architecture geek out session, we’ve even got that covered in UKV. Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral is one of only two churches designed by Louis Sullivan, a renowned architect in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the only church built by Sullivan that stands in the city of Chicago. Sullivan was enormously influential in the architectural history of this city, mentoring greats like Frank Lloyd Wright, and is considered by many to be the creator of the modern skyscraper as we know it."

Pub Royale

Permanently Closed

"Pub Royale, Ukrainian Village. Taking the place of Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park’s beloved SmallBar, Pub Royale is a breath of fresh air to an avenue filled with so-so sports bars with generally sub-par food. Fancy a spot of curry? We’ve found your stop. Pub Royale's hearty contemporary english-style pub food (read heavy Indian spices) and massive rotating tap list is certain to send you on your way, perfectly full. Might we suggest the Gobi Manchurian (crispy cauliflower) or the Mussels + Naan? Splendid!"

Bite Cafe

Permanently Closed

"Bite Cafe, Ukrainian Village. When we’re too tired/busy/lazy/etc. to cook, but want to eat “healthy” at any time of day, Bite is one of the first local spots that comes to mind. Perfect for a romantic date night with your boo or a 13 person BYO pre-game for the Big Freedia concert at the Empty Bottle next door, we’ve never had a bad experience. And it seems the vegetarian friendly BYOB has been really pumping out the hits lately. The simple printed menu holds their delicious staples, but turn your eyes to the colorful chalkboard for the cuisine du Jour. You won’t be disappointed."

Amish Healthy Foods

Health food store · Ukrainian Village

"Amish & Healthy Foods, Ukrainian Village. With Ukrainian Village being home to the single worst Mariano’s in the entire franchise, we’re forced to stretch our legs and hit up a few of the local groceries to find all of the far-out ingredients Ottolenghi puts in his recipes. For that, we have Amish & Healthy Foods. Their selection of organic produce, meats, dairy and hand packaged nuts + grains is nothing short of amazing (as long as your pocketbook can handle the hit) and they’ve got every remedy for a wicked hangover. Even if we don’t buy a thing, pursuing the shelves is a treat. Let’s be honest, we’re suckers for bulk dry goods and spices"

Comrade Cycles

Bicycle Shop · East Ukrainian Village

"Comrade Cycles, Ukrainian Village. As cyclists, having a good local bike shop is indispensable. This is our go-to place to get a start-of-season tune up – or a replacement for a stolen bike seat. They’ve got all the essentials (helmets, handlebar grips, locks), quick service turnarounds and a welcoming staff who tells it like it is."

Epic Spices

Spice store · West Town

"Epic Spices, Ukrainian Village. A small but mighty spice shop. Housed in a nondescript former menswear shop, Epic Spices is about the smallest store you’ve ever walked into. And compared with their larger, fancier counterparts, Epic is cheap. But don’t let that fool you. Despite its small footprint, they have a selection that will please even the most discerning home cooks (not surprising, given that the majority of their business is wholesale directly to Chicago chefs). Plus, they make all of their own herb blends and spice mixes in-house. Where do we go when we need to re-up on black garlic? Or kefir lime leaves? Or when we made tonic syrup and needed to special order chincona bark? You get the picture."

Happy Village

Permanently Closed

"Happy Village, Ukrainian Village. Love table tennis? Then make your way to Happy Village to test your skills against some eclectic locals at one of our favorite dive-bar/packaged goods spots in the neighborhood. If you’re like us and only get “better” after a few PBRs, don’t be surprised when you get your ass handed to you before you even realize you’ve finished volleying for the serve. But don’t worry, their expansive back patio, calming waterfall and dirt cheap beers are the perfect remedy for whatever ails you."

Upton's Breakroom

Vegan restaurant · West Town

"Upton's Breakroom, Ukrainian Village. Upton’s Breakroom is the vegan cafe connected to Upton’s Naturals, a homegrown manufacturer of seitan products available nationwide. It also just so happens to be the closest lunch spot to our studio. Everything on their menu is 100% vegan – not there’s anything wrong with that. We are unabashed meatlovers, but every now and then a Togarashi Bowl (baked tofu, grilled kale, carrots, pickled radish, scallion, shredded seaweed, sesame seeds over purple rice with a lemon tahini miso dressing) really hits the spot. And the café gets bonus points for its airy, minimal aesthetic."

The Publican

American restaurant · West Town

"The Publican, West Loop Fulton Market. Simple farmhouse fare. Undoubtedly one of my favorite restaurants in the country, Publican doesn't disappoint. The service is always impeccable as well as the food. It is a place to go to share dishes and the beer + wine selection is bar none. My favorite thing to do is order a dozen oysters and the 'vegetable platter'. This isn't actually on the menu, but if you ask for it, they don't flinch and they will bring out a medley of whatever vegetables they have that day from roasted to salads. And, as usual from this group, locally sourced is the main focus. LOVE!"

Publican Quality Meats

Butcher shop · West Town

"Publican Quality Meats, West Loop Fulton Market. This is the spot to go for super fresh + simple lunches. Everything is super high quality and locally sourced as much as possible. They are part butcher shop, part deli and even sell freshly baked bread, which is the best in the city! A few other special items they sell include the marinated farm chicken from Publican ready for the grill, bacon-wrapped dates from Avec and freshly made ice cream from Nico. Everything this restaurant group puts out into the world is just, simply, the best."

Open Books

Book store · West Loop

"Open Books, West Loop Fulton Market. Open Books is one of my favorite NFP organizations in Chicago and happens to be the only library in the West Loop. They sell used books and the proceeds go to inspiring programs to promote literacy. There is an entire back room dedicated to kids and they often have book readings. The space has a lot of character and the people who work there love what they do - it is a really special place!"

Kavi Gupta Gallery

Art gallery · West Town

"Kavi Gupta, West Loop Fulton Market. This is the 3rd space opened a few years ago by Kavi Gupta and is the largest commercial gallery in Chicago. It's tucked away so not something you would just stumble into. There are a lot of galleries in the neighborhood so do an entire walking tour!"

J.P. Graziano Grocery

Sandwich shop · West Town

"J.P. Graziano's, West Loop Fulton Market. One of my favorite deli's in the city!! J.P. Graziano imports high quality cheese and meat for their classic italian subs. My favorites are the classic Italian and the artichoke. They use freshly baked bread by D'amatos on Grand and also have a good packaged good selection. A great family business that has been around 40+ years. Go support them!"

1012 W Lake St

Building · West Town

"Harvest Juicery, West Loop Fulton Market. Locally sourced, organic produce lovingly gets pressed into these detoxifying juices and smoothies. They also just started serving toasts with fresh toppings - YUM! The interior is clean and crisp with a long communal table making for a nice spot to sit, read and sip."

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

Chicken restaurant · West Town

"Gus's Fried Chicken, West Loop Fulton Market. Newer to the neighborhood, but not new to the country, Gus's had humble beginnings down south in the 70's and now people say this is their favorite fried chicken in Chicago! I personally loved the fried green tomatoes."

Greek Islands

Greek restaurant · Greektown

"Greek Islands, West Loop Fulton Market. Greek Islands has been around since the 70's and was opened by a group of friends who came over from Greece. It is my go to spot whenever I'm in the mood for some greek food. I tried their fried eggplant appetizer recently and it was so darn good."

Chicago French Market

Restaurant · West Loop

"French Market, West Loop Fulton Market. A popular place to grab lunch, the French Market is open daily and has a large list of local vendors selling food, flowers and gifts. Black Dog gelato is one of my favorite vendors! Make sure to stop for a sample of the locally made sweet cream."

Foxtrot

Permanently Closed

"The Market by Foxtrot, West Loop Fulton Market. Foxtrot is not your typical convenient delivery service. They have rotating, highly-curated goods from beer + wine to gift sets. They opened this storefront not that long ago on Lake and carry freshly baked bread from, my favorite, PQM as well as a lot of amazing cheese and other local packaged goods."

Chicken and Farm Shop

Restaurant · West Town

"Chicken Shop, West Loop Fulton Market. The Chicken Shop, also located at Soho House, serves up hot, fast and fresh farm chicken with all the favorite sides like corn on the cob, collard greens and mac + cheese. The people who work there take a tour to the farm where the chickens are raised. They care, they really care."

Billy Reid

Boutique

"Billy Reid, West Loop Fulton Market. Billy Reid is impeccable. The clothing is high-quality and made to last. If you are eyeing a silk top, it will be made out of the best silk you can find. Their clothing is also ethically made in either the US or Italy. The location is two stories with women's on the first floor and men's on the second. It's an inspiring space and worth a walk-through!"

avec Restaurant

Mediterranean restaurant · West Loop

"Avec, West Loop Fulton Market. Avec is one of the best restaurants in the city. They are known for their bacon wrapped dates, which you can buy at PQM to bake at home by the way (you're welcome.) It has been known as a dinner spot, but in the last year opened up for lunch and brunch so while there is an hour wait for dinner, you can pop right in for lunch no problem. Everything is so fresh, local and beautiful."

Soho House Chicago

Social club · West Town

"The Allis, West Loop Fulton Market. The Allis, named after the family who commissioned the building in 1907, is one of the public spaces at The Soho House. They serve fresh, locally sourced ingredients in their light and delicious lunch fare. A great spot to have a quick bite or meeting. Their chocolate chip cookie is one of my favorites in the city!"

La Colombe Coffee Roasters

Espresso bar · West Town

"La Colombe, West Loop Fulton Market. La Colombe is doing everything right. Their high-quality beans are paired with high-quality milk from Kilgus Farms which makes for a very delicious cappuccino. My favorite in the city (heck, country!) Equally impressive is their Draft Latte, which, you guessed it, comes out of the tap. It is best up with no ice as it has this glorious foam a top a nutty, slightly sweet latte."

Marine Layer

Clothing store · Bucktown

"Marine Layer, Wicker Park. Marine Layer sells small runs of unique, beach inspired clothing. Their materials are incredibly soft and eco-friendly. Located on Damen, you can find this gem across the street from the likes of Steven Allen and Scotch & Soda."
