The Best Donuts In Chicago

"We like going to Stan’s when we want a lot of variety or a donut that sounds like it was created by an eight-year-old. For example, they have a caramel marshmallow, Cap’n crunch, and our personal favorite, the biscoff (a.k.a. cookie butter-filled) pocket. If you don’t feel like feeding your inner child, consider ordering something like their pretzel-glazed or the pistachio old fashioned." - adrian kane, john ringor

On the Grid : Stan's Donuts & Coffee

"Stan's is new to the neighborhood, but definitely not easily missed. They've made their presence unmistakably known by filling the air at Clark and Diversey with the irresistible smell of fresh donuts. Stan's bright interior is reminiscent of a retro diner, with a wall of colorful Kitchen Aid mixers and pink packaging. They've definitely chosen the gourmet creative route with donuts like maple caramel bacon, captain crunch and peanut butter-banana, although you really can't beat their classic old fashioned. Stan’s makes donuts throughout the day so you can always get your fix, but if you get there early enough there are also gluten free and vegan options available. Be warned: A single Stan’s donut will spoil you for life." - Stephen Merlo

Google
Quite pricey donuts for the quality. The breakfast sandwich was okay but very messy as the croissant was kind of over baked and extremely flaky and the eggs were huge chunks which fell off as you try eating it. Large variety available. The store was clean and a cute decor.

Google
I was looking for a coffee shop to get my quick morning coffee and came access Stan’s donuts. I am not a fan of donuts but when I saw the red velvet donut, I had to get one. It wasn’t overly sweet like most donuts but they still got the red velvet flavor just right. I’ve tried other donut shop’s red velvet donuts and they never seem to get that red velvet flavor right. Highly recommend Stan’s donuts, even if you are not a fan of donuts. I’ll have to grab another donut for my flight snack back home!

Google
When in Chicago you might have heard about the famous Stan Donuts, but let me tell you they are not something worth to detour if cruising the streets! The service was good and friendly and the atmosphere felt okay, but the donuts that are the main entree were not on its best day and dry, it looked and tasted like it had 3 days on the counter.

Google
I don’t know if I was crazy for expecting real food, but this burrito was clearly microwaved. And the middle is still kinda cold even as the outer layer is burning hot I’m sure the donuts are good but what’s the point of having a breakfast burrito on your menu if it’s literally garbage $13 for a microwaved burrito with a bit of potato hash and a coffee

Google
pretty good, didn't try a donut, but got a buffalo chicken quesadilla & a frozen hot chocolate.

Google
Good matcha latte and the cold brew was decent. You can get a free drink for signing up with the app. And the day we went, they happened to be giving away free cold brew cans! Friendly staff and some seating in a busy part of town

Google
Went to get a donut 1 hour before they closed and was informed that they only had a few donuts types available. The issue I had with that was 40 mins earlier the entire case was full as I had past it on my way to dinner. With the intent of going afterwards for a dessert. Just go early or you may be disappointed

Google
This place managed to get coffee coupons to my kids and bro in law. We went the next morning as this place is right close to our Hotel. Super friendly staff. Very patient with new customers. Huge variety of donuts. Super good not so typical donuts. The coffee was pretty solid too. They fetch a premium for what they do, but they do it real well.

Yelp
Was it the best donuts I've had? No. Was it decent and helped with donut cravings? Yes. They have large enough indoor seating, for half dozen of regular and half dozen of special donuts, we've paid about $40. Which is honestly insane... in this economy? And they ask for tips? Insanity. lol my favorite one was the cronuts. Their red velvet didn't really have much flavors. A lot of variety to try but you may have to pay that price. They do have other items besides donuts too.

Yelp
Pretty good donut. This was my first taste and it was great. Service was quick and easy. Store has so much room to stretch out and enjoy your food. Pink chairs are nice touch.

Yelp
Nom, nom, nom! Best donuts ever. The hype is earned and is not wrong. If you're in Chicago, grab your doughnut, grab a cold brew, and enjoy the neighborhood.

Yelp
Oh Stan's! How I miss you so! You've become a Chicago staple over the years and when I lived in the city, I popped in pretty regularly. This location is at a busy intersection right by a train stop so can get crowded. Def don't plan on snagging a seat inside on the weekend, but you can try! I'm a chocoholic so the chocolate long john, double chocolate old fashioned and vanilla old fashioned - tricked ya with that last one. I'm not a pistach girl but the world loves their few pistachio options. Overall, I find their flavors hit or miss but if you stick to the old fashioneds, you'll be in business.

Yelp
Donuts not super fresh staff not super friendly and put paper which sticks to the donuts. All in all ok but could be better

Yelp
I love Stan's for their Donuts and coffee. The Stan's branch I recently visited had a lot more Vegan options when compared to the downtown branch. They had Vegan Strawberry Croissant and Cinnamon Sugar donut. Both looked really good. We got the Carrot Cake as my boyfriend was craving for it. We could easily taste the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and carrots in it. Chicago has a lot of Stan's outlets and you should surely check it out once!

Yelp
I tried Stan's for the first time yesterday and was impressed. Although they are expensive, they're good, and you get what you pay for. I bought a dozen doughnuts and was able to try bites of a few as they were for a family party. My favorites were the plain and the chocolate glazed cake. The shop was clean and bright. And the staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Kevin. Thanks for a great experience- looking forward to my next visit when we're home for Christmas!!
google avatar

Auston T.

Yelp
Very tasty and presentable donuts! I personally tried the chocolate old fashioned donut and a red velvet cake donut. No reason to go to Dunkin Donuts with these guys in the neighborhood. A tried and true Chicago classic!
google avatar

Cam S.

Yelp
Great customer service and clean facilities. A lot of variety with donuts. I came for the vanilla latte which was really good.
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
The croissant donut filled with pastry cream (called "Le Stan," I believe) was super good. It's shaped like a square and has a yummy crunchy exterior and a fluffy layered interior. Layers are thicker than a typical croissant, giving it more of a donut feel. The pastry cream filling is very yummy, thick without being too gloppy. Service was typical for a donut place, i.e. very fast. The outside is a bit overly sugary due to the sugar granules they coat it with, but you can easily brush those off if you want it less sweet.
google avatar

Roseann M.

Yelp
Even us vegans like a sweet treat sometimes, and Stan's delivers with two selections. The chocolate vegan donut was very satisfying, moist, and not too sweet. The cinnamon sugar was hard to swallow, literally. The taste was alright, but even taking very small bites, I literally coughed and choked on it. Too bad. I had a very good decaf oak milk latte, which helped, a little, when I was trying to swallow the cinnamon sugar. The highlight of this location, though, is the customer service. The people behind the counter acted as if they were thrilled to see me, and thrilled to serve me. I felt very welcome. Customer service will make or break a business, and Stan's had the right people working there.

Yelp
We had stopped in here for a quick coffee before heading out of town. This place has insane donuts and one of the best matcha mixes I've ever had. The shop has a cute little area for sitting. The staff is amazing, I ended up ordering my matcha hot at first and when realizing I could have it cold the barista changed it without hassle. She was amazing and I would 10/10 recommend this location to anyone.

Yelp
Found myself watching Midnight Club on Netflix - c'mon, it's October, spooky month, I'm trying to be festive. Lo & behold, a character was wearing a Stan's Donuts tee. What?! Well then, it's been forever, but now I want a Chocolate Pocket with Nutella... & a t-shirt. It was roughly mid-day but they still had a couple left! They didn't have the tee in my size but I grabbed a mug. I appreciated it being wrapped carefully & packaged separate from my doughy treat. Made it home & eagerly put the goods on the counter. Would it be just as good as remember? YES. My inner Homer Simpson died of nostalgia upon first bite. I've never been a fan of filled donuts until this creation... I'm a sucker for Nutella. What can I say? The frosting stuck a bit to the paper, but it was still the same beloved donut I enjoyed years ago. I'm sure their other offerings are delicious too, I just can't bring myself to try anything else. Maybe I'll get around to a Le Stan Croissant Donut along with my usual. If you're a chocoholic like me or just enjoy a good donut, pop into Stan's. It's time to treatyoself.

Yelp
This iconic Chicago donut shop lived up to all the hype. First, the building that it is in is so Chicago city vibe and the sweet teat offerings and coffee are mind blowing. We had a little taste of everything with coffee and chai - all were superb! The decor was adorable, tufted pink leather settees, retro pink leather lounge chairs, framed donuts on the wall made for a quirky fun vibe.
google avatar

Rohini G.

Yelp
Donuts are fluffy and generally good but the glazes are far too sweet. Cute ambiance and interior decor. I also got a chai and it was quite bland without much of a black tea flavor at all. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Will P.

Yelp
Frankly I don't see what the hoopla is about this place. They do have a fun assortment of donuts but to me they all tasted a little stale. I know they're fresh every day but wasn't a big deal and for the price tag which is ridiculous is certainly not worth it. I'm sure there are other places nearby that have just as good product but you will not be paying $10 for two donuts. Feel free to check it out for the novelty however, it's pretty much like the Northend Boston. They suck you in and drain you dry!
google avatar

Robin E.

Yelp
Stan's has the fluffiest egg sandwiches ever! Seriously! Try any of their egg sandwiches and you'll be hooked! Even a Keto friendly version! And don't forget the donuts! They have a beautiful selection of donuts. Vanilla, chocolate, carrot cake, sprinkles, glazed, gluten free too! You'll be happy with any one or two or three of them! The staff is great too!
google avatar

Hailey D.

Yelp
AMAZING!!! The donut was SO good. I got the biscoff dough boy. I am so excited to go back and try more flavors! Also the worker was so nice. Matcha was a bit too milky tho but next time I'll just say extra matcha powder!
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
I had a taste for a Buttercream Bismark at Stan's Donuts at Diversey & Clark. Good coffee and counter people. There are no FREE refills. It will cost you 99¢.

John S.

Yelp
Don't advertise what you don't have! If it's sold out or if it's not available no more simply take down the posters!!
google avatar

Helene L.

Yelp
So happy I stopped in here for a donut at the start of a busy day. I had the raspberry filled and an apple fritter and god were they good. My brother had a blueberry cream cheese and that was also delicious. Everyone who worked there was so nice and the gentleman behind the counter gave us fresh donuts from the rack instead of in the counter. The coffee was also divine. I really like this location, its not that busy and the donuts are fresh. Definitely a great quick breakfast stop!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Holy cow what a place!!! This is delicious!! You MUST get Stan's donuts! Nothing is bad here!!
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
I found out about this spot through ordering on gold belly! I finally was able to try it in person! I really enjoyed their glazed old fashioned! Super buttery and melts in your mouth!
google avatar

Seth K.

Yelp
Five stars for the Stan's of a few years ago. Today they're more like 4.5 stars. I think ever since they switched to a centralized bakery they dropped as several great choices (pourin' one out for my homie the apple fritter). Still they're quite good and worth a trip if you're just down the road of only to remember the good old days. Staff at this location is chill, and the kitschy interior design is preserved.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Service is not good, floors are sticky and they are too lazy to clean the bathrooms so they lock them to all and say that they are not clean.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
So friendly and welcoming. The donuts are the best. Must get a cruller. The place was clean and menu was easy to navigate
google avatar

Blake M.

Yelp
This place is really cute and a great alternative to Starbucks. Not only is the interior really retro and neat but the food is amazing. We came here twice on our trip this past weekend bc it was so convenient, efficient and delicious. I even had a discount card from my hotel but I forgot to use it but didn't care bc it was worth it. The staff was very friendly and efficient getting food out. The atmosphere was relaxing and quaint despite being in a busy area. Would definitely recommend for bfast, donut options, or a quick drink on the run. The first time I got a fancy croissant donut and a egg n cheese bfast sandwich. The second trip I got a plain test donut and another plant based sausage bfast sandwich. Loved that they have vegetarian options here as well!!! Overall all the food was fresh and amazing! Yummy , check them out and it's all well priced too!!

Yelp
After hearing good reviews from several friends, I decided to try out Stan's. It's been a. I got a bacon/egg/cheese pretzel stanwich with an iced pumpkin spice latte. My friend got a vanilla latte and pistachio glazed donut. The pretzel was soft and chewy, and my bacon was crispy goodness! It wasn't too bad! The iced PSL was very yummy as well. We wished there was more pistachio flavor in the donut, but it was soft nonetheless. This location is a cute spot with several seating options. Some tables are super close together though, but it's a good sized place. The service is nice enough. I'm sure I'll be back again to try several donuts, but it didn't blow my mind like I thought it would!

David L.

Yelp
Good service and coffee - donuts were tasty but not healthy :( - we have been there every morning of our stay for coffee.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
I've always been a big fan of Stan's. They've always had consistent great customer service. They're always friendly and very welcoming as soon as you open the door. They offer a bunch of great tasting donuts and good coffee as well. The donuts are always fresh. A dozen of these bad boys will definitely break the bank though. They are pricey indeed. Please bring back the bacon maple bars!

Dr H.

Yelp
The smell when you walk in --- WHOA !!! GERARD C. IS THE MAN!!!! This place should be called Gerard's Donuts & Coffee Thanks again
google avatar

Gladys C.

Yelp
Stan's Donuts was found by my coworkers. The doughnuts are great and their selection is varied. You can get coffee and other tasty drinks at Stan's. I recommend this shop if downtown Chicago.

Yelp
This location is conveniently located on Clark and Broadway. I have an appointment at Glamrum right across the street, but decided to stop in here for a quick bite to eat since I arrived early. I was serviced right away, and I've had Stan's sporadically over the years. I was surprised to see they served bagels, sandwiches, and small sides in addition to coffee and donuts. I'm here for it, and I decided to go with their bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and a side of hash brown. It's actually not bad at all, the sandwich is tasty -- my only complaint is the egg is crumbly and kept spilling out of the sandwich through every bite, and my personal preference is Dunkin's hash browns even though the food here seems to be a healthier option and better quality. Either way, I recommend this location to anyone in the area looking for a snack or breakfast.

Susan E.

Yelp
The atmosphere was great, and so was the service! Excellent donuts. Excellent coffee. Highly recommend!

Yelp
11/29/20 - REVIEW 1,005 - Stan's Donuts ta die for. I've seen Stan's before but have never had one before 10/19 when I was in Wicker Park and stopped at the Stan's On Damen Ave. This was the beginning of the end. Now I'm hopelessly addicted to their donuts, but bit just any donut the double dark chocolate donut w/a dark chocolate cake (nice & moist w/a slight crunch of an old fashioned donut) & the dark chocolate decadence of that sweet rich dark chocolate frosting. If it sound like I'm drooling now I probably am lol. Honestly if you like dark chocolate (and I love it). You will absolutely love this donut. I have now been to 5 different Stan's Donuts since 10/19 & I always always get this DOUBLE DARK CHOCOLATE OLD FASHIONED DONUT because if I don't I know I will regret not getting this donut. That's how dam good it is. Honestly I hadn't been eating a lot of sweets but this one donut is my kryptonite. I can't resist it or stop thinking about it. Does it sound like I'm obsessed? Yah yah just a little. TRY IT YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by on a weekday afternoon to see what all the hype was about! Ended up trying a larger maple bacon. Expensive! The maple bacon was a bit dryer than expected, but the portion was shareable, but still not worth the over $5 I spent. Overall was good, but not blow your socks off kind of great! If I was in the area and need a coffee and donut, maybe, but I do not think I will be making the trip back just to score one of these "delicacies." Still on the search for the best donuts in the cities! If you found it, PM me, this could be life changing. Please.

Jessica F.

Yelp
Was excited to try Stan's on our recent first trip to Chicago. Donuts are one of my absolute favorite foods....needless to say I expected something great here...and I was utterly disappointed. We tried 3 different donuts: the biscoff filled; the pretzel glazed; and the cronut with cream. All of the donuts tasted old. The biscoff donuts had barely any filling, and the filling that was inside was hard. The cronut was dry. And the pretzel donut tastes absolutely nothing like a pretzel. Oh, and the lattes we got were terrible. This place sucks. Don't waste your time or money.

Yelp
I needed a quick pick-me-up after celebrating St. Patrick's Day festivities, and saw a Stan's Donut down the street. I basically beelined inside and ordered a lemon pistachio old fashioned. This hit the SPOT. Ordering was quick and easy, and the service was great! We went to the location inside a grocery/quick eats spot, and there was plenty of seating. Parking was naturally a doozy, but it was in a lovely, walkable area!
google avatar

Garrett Y.

Yelp
Sweet alternative to Starbucks across the street. Service quick and friendly. Got the blueberry cream cheese pocket--it's like a cross between a danish and cream filled donut! I balanced that with a large cup of their house drip coffee.
google avatar

Karin P.

Yelp
I love their donuts! I wish they had a location in Gurnee! I will make the drive to this location for these donuts though!
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
I acknowledge full responsibility for not inquiring about prices prior to placing my order for a dozen donuts. To say that a dozen donuts totaled over $40 and nearly $50 by the time I added a tip blew me away is a slight understatement. Deets: a doughboy= $4, a specialty = $3, a standard = $2. Anyway, they do have a very interesting assortment of donuts, including a few vegan choices. They're good- not $50 good, sorry.
google avatar

Becca D.

Yelp
Came here during a off time because I was craving a latte. I'm not into all the crazy flavors so I grabbed a glazed and cinnamon sugar donut. The glazed was fluffy, generously sized and everything tasted fresh despite it being late in the day. The cinnamon donut tasted just like a cider donut. I was happily surprised to see they had the la Colombe draft lattes available so I didn't have to wait and could just grab one to go. I found the prices to be steep but I think you get what you pay for. Also extra star the staff was very friendly and practiced good hygiene ( saw them washing hands before helping me with my order).
google avatar

Ranillo R.

Yelp
Been to this location a couple times this week. Everyone here is really great each time I went. Had some questions on some new items on the menu, and was very thorough with explaining each one. Fan of the olive oil le stan, awesome custard donut with some hints of orange. Plenty of seating at this Stans and clean. Finding street metered parking can be a little difficult. Wil come back though!
google avatar

Florencia N.

Yelp
Pretty good donuts! I had 2 old fashioned and they had a nice crunch to them. Also had a custard filled donut and I'd easily wait it was the best costard I've had in a donut. Plenty of choices in there for all to enjoy and the staff is super nice! Great for any celebration or just a morning treat. The specialty donuts stand out as the best, but don't forget to chase the sweetness down with some coffee! Definitely coming back here. Location was safe during COVID-19 + employees were wonderful to speak with. Quick and efficient service, too!
google avatar

Liza A.

Yelp
Ordered banana biscoff donut. Had high hopes because it was last one and looked so good. Unfortunately first bite and it was dry and cloyingly sweet. The glaze and toppings had a crystallized taste. Probably better to check out this place earlier in day when items are fresher!
google avatar

Aly M.

Yelp
Ok the signature Stan's donut is definitely the best donut 5/5. I have literally tried ever other donut and it is by far the best even if any other in the city. I would highly recommend. Worth the calories!!!

Violet F.

Yelp
DIRTY. I came in this past Sunday and there were flies everywhere. They were literally laying on the donuts in the case and on the donuts behind the employee. I left because there was no way I can trust this place, they can't even keep the front clean so how am I supposed to believe they keep the back clean? DO NOT EAT HERE UNTIL THEY GET THIS SITUATION FIXED!!! P.S. I tried to speak to someone about this and he gave me an attitude.
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
Mmm... how can I resist Stan's Donut? I don't live near one so every time I pass by one, I must get one! Going from just a few locations to now expanded to available in various neighborhoods, the taste & texture is always consistent. Went on a Saturday around 2- I didn't think it was considered "donut" time but there were many patrons in there. But you know what? You can have Stan's at any time, right? I found out Stan's carry vegan glazed donuts-- and they're just as good! The outside isn't as creamy as regular, but it's coated with sugar instead. Good luck trying to pick what you want! I'm so indecisive so I always just stick to glazed. Yuuuum!!

Yelp
Nearly a decade ago I lived around the corner from here for 5 years. Except when I lived here Stan's was Jamba Juice. When I came back to the old hood and saw the Stan's sign I cursed, mostly because I love donuts and would have LOVED having them nearby while I was there. Alas, t'was not to be. But I popped in since I was in the area. Stan's Donuts are delicious. Like really delicious. And the flavors are well balanced and interesting. It was hard to choose there were SO many tasty options. We did a half dozen that included the biscoff and banana pocket, a croissant donut, jelly filled, plain glazed and more. I also got a half dozen for my mom (a thanks for watching our pups while we were gone), can of cold brew and their own nitro cold brew coffee. Our total? A whopping $52. Most expensive dozen donuts and coffee I think I've ever purchased in my life. So that's kinda why I withhold the last star. It's just pricey. Sure, we got some of the more specialty donuts, so the price added up, but still. Oof. I think if I went back I'd have to limit myself to just one or two to save some $. They're fantastic donuts but perhaps it's a good thing they weren't there when I lived there. I'd be donut broke for sure!
