Foxtrot Charlie Cafe

Cafe · Brunswick

"Foxtrot Charlie, Brunswick by Smith & Thomas. Apart from the food and coffee (which is all produced in house, mostly organic, and all delicious), Foxtrot Charlie boasts some award winning interior design. The front eating area has an airplane and a bustling vibe unique to Sydney Rd Cafes – this is where Foxtrot Charlie roasts its own in-house coffee blend. Out the back is a super pleasant light filled eating area. The space is very relaxing to be in and somehow made me feel smarter. Foxtrot Charlie will easily become one of your favourite places to spend time along Sydney Rd. There is also an upstairs function room that is equally nice to be in."

Long and the Short

Permanently Closed

"The Long and Short, Brunswick by Smith & Thomas. Sometimes sticking to the basics is the best policy. Long and short does one thing and does it well – make coffee. Melbourne coffee shops set the bar extremely high, so there’s no room for scrubs, and the Long and Short passes all tests with flying colours. The owner, Scrodge, is always down for a chat and seems to know everything worth knowing about the goings on of Brunswick, so if you’re looking for a point in the right direction, head down, grab a coffee and say hi. There's a small selection of tasty snacks as well."

Mr Wilkinson

Bar · Brunswick

"Mr Wilkinson Bar, Brunswick by Smith & Thomas. Mr Wilkinson on Brunswick East’s Lygon Street is very smooth. Take your pick of spaces to relax in: long front bar, light and leafy courtyard or large lounge area with a second bar and comfortable booths. The interior is tastefully decked out by the owners Jack Letch, Gordon Johnson and Katherine Wrigglesworth for whom the bar is clearly a passion. They have also put together a menu of quality fang to keep you well fed and jolly all night.A great place for catching up with old and new friends. If you head to Mr Wilkinson, leave plenty of time, because once you sit down, you won’t want to leave."

"Lost and Found Market, Brunswick by Smith & Thomas. If you like enormous warehouses packed with every kind of vintage delight, you’ll love the Lost and Found Market. These guys have been occupying giant warehouses spaces around the northern suburbs for the last 8 years or so with an ever changing offering of vintage goods. There are some great relics of local history in the stalls here – you can easily imagine the thoroughly Australian mid-century homes some of this stuff came from. Even if you’re not usually a fan of vintage stuff, you’ll still find something to pique your interest. Really an impressive collection."

Mr Kitly regularly puts on exhibitions of work by Australian and international artists and designers as well. Definitely worth a look."

Hillvale Photo

Photo lab · Brunswick

"Hillvale Photo, Brunswick by Smith & Thomas. There’s something about film cameras that digital cameras just don’t have. I guess it’s the film. And the guys at Hillvale know their stuff when it comes to film. It’s getting harder to find places to process negatives, but Andrew and Jason and the rest of the guys at Hillvale have made it slightly easier with their network of drop boxes to deposit your film in. And if you want any info on film, cameras, or photography, drop into their funky back street lab and have a chat, they’re a friendly bunch."

Record Paradise

Record store · Brunswick

"Record Paradise, Brunswick by Smith & Thomas. This record store has been running since 1955 and it’s the best place in Brunswick to source hard-to-find records, as well as easy to find ones. Renae and her Partner Paul have a great collection of local and independent releases that will have you browsing up a storm. It’s pretty easy to lose an afternoon here. Record Paradise also has a policy of never wasting a record, resulting in an epic yearly garage sale of 12,000 $1 records. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for this, don’t be foolish enough to miss it. If you spend so long browsing that you need a haircut, then head around the corner to their sister store “Paradise Cutters” and Paul will clean you up."

Met by an Italian speaking crew, switching to English only when serving you'll feel as you you've just taken a mini vacay to Sicily. REB is still frequently used as the venue of choice for a number of exhibitions throughout the year, from designer markets to wedding fairs to tattoo conventions. Hotel Collingwood

Pub · Collingwood

"The Robert Burns, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. A Scottish-looking pub named after a dead Scottish poet serving incredible Spanish cuisine – 'Robbie Burns' (as referred to affectionately by Melbournians) is truly a Melbourne institution.Tartan rugs, old bricks, the paella is to die for, the wine is incredibly good and the service is genuinely friendly. This is a fantastic scene for our Friday night drinks or the next place to take your other half on date night – don't forget about lunches, they often have lunch specials too!"

Wabi Sabi Salon

Japanese restaurant · Collingwood

"Wabi Sabi Salon, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. Wabi Sabi is a Japanese world view representing beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete" – a beautiful concept though Wabi Sabi Salon's cuisine is far from imperfect or incomplete!Nestled in a busy Smith St location, it is a small and unassuming Japanese restaurant that never disappoints.Locals love the lunch time take away sushi options – some of the best I've had in Melbourne (no sushi after-taste from cheap fish, this is the real deal), or sit down lunch specials such as their famous bento boxes, pictured below.Try the crumbed salmon, it's incredible."

Plug Seven Records

Record store · Fitzroy

"Plug 7 Records, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. Plug 7 Records is a pretty new addition to the Smith St stretch. If you're into your vinyl, it's a place of wonder.I walked into Plug 7 straight after buying my first turntable not knowing a thing. I asked them to recommend 'something good' – a more generic and unspecific request has never been made. To my utter surprise, they delivered. After a few quick questions, I was ushered to the African section and given a 'small' selection of around 10 records to sample. I settled on their initial recommendation 'Blo'. I loved it!I am now a Plug 7 convert, and every time I go back the music gets better. African funk, Japanese Jazz, rarities, electronic and rock – there's something for everyone, and it's all great.Plug 7 also hosts regular events with live music and even Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes) so pop by!"

It's an incredibly beautifully designed store, with wrought iron and natural materials. No attitude, no pretense, no expectations on previous knowledge – just kind, helpful and very knowledgeable service. These beautiful photos are courtesy of Blackhearts & Sparrows."

"Neko Neko, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. Another venue that is technically in Fitzroy (but locals will feel belongs to Collingwood all the same) is Neko Neko (or 'Cat Cat'). Try the kingfish dish (pictured below)! If you're a vegetarian, pescatarian or vegan you'll sure feel the love here as your choices will be many, and they will be good. Easey's

Bar & grill · Collingwood

"Easey's, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. Burgers. In a train. On a roof.Seriously do I need to say more? Easey's is a burger joint that spans several levels within Melbourne's (if not Australia's?) only train building – why do I call it that? It's a building that for some reason has not one, but THREE train carriages on top of it, as well as being adorned with sections of rail tracks. The burgers are super tasty, reminiscent of a New York burger with melted cheddar. Even the vegetarian option (pictured) is awesome. It's a cool vibe, there's graffiti everywhere and the staff are friendlier than you're used to.This place scores very highly for me both in burgers and cool factor."

"Collingwood Children's Farm, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. Want to take the kids somewhere? The Collingwood Children's Farm is your best bet.Cows, goats, pigs, chooks, guinea pigs – you name it, they have it. Fantastically close to the city and adjacent to the Yarra River bike trail it's pretty easy to get to. Makes for a fun day out with the family in which city kids can delight in the sound a sheep makes. There are many great opportunities like sheep feeding and guinea pig holding, as well as observing helicopter parents in their natural environment – each animal feeding opportunity containing more adults with iPhones trained on their children than the children themselves ;)There's also a really great cafe right by the entrance serving delicious sandwiches and great coffee for when you've just had a bit too much of staring at Bessie feeding on grass."

Bar · Collingwood

"Beer Mash, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. We love Beer Mash – what a craft beer selection! Located in the busiest part of Smith St, this is where to get the real deal. Choose from their vast bottled or canned beer selection. With international names like Mikkeller and Rogue and local ones like Hawkers, Moon Dog and Exit Brewing I only wonder why it took me so long to realise this store existed. What makes them even more popular is they stock plastic growler bottles for all you music festival enthusiasts."

Cafe · Collingwood

"Aunty Peg's, Collingwood Abbotsford by Studio Fellow. Aunty Peg's has quickly become our caffeine dealer of choice. Don't bother asking for a coffee with milk (the don't have any), here is where you can delight in getting to know your coffee (lovingly prepared) and its origins. The Reverence (or The Rev or Revs) is a largely untouched classic corner pub in the working-class area of Footscray that is a dying breed in advocating for live music whilst being mutually embraced by local residents. The food is fast becoming just as worshipped as the gig offerings. The vegan options are now famous too. Taco Tuesday, Trivia Night and Comedy Night are always popular. Their greatest gift to Melbourne however, is the unwavering welcoming of so many bands of all popularity. For some context; news recently broke that the building was up for sale. This sparked an outpouring of hysterical grief for the potential loss of yet another iconic home for so many live music fans across the western suburbs, Melbourne and beyond. Every aspect of the The Reverence is again, perfect. We would be homeless without it.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Building · Footscray

"Ras Dashen, Footscray by Susu Studio. Picking the best Ethiopian restaurant in Footscray is a futile task. Each of the many Ethiopian venues across town will be somebody’s loyal favourite. For overall points (food, service, love & decor) we’re sticking with Ras Dashen, where everyone is warmly welcomed. It’s the kind of place you proudly/smugly tell your friends and travel websites that you’re a regular and they know your name (we are aware that is exactly what is happening right now). The family-owned and run café in Footscray mall should be experienced with a large group of friends and a cavernous stomach. For roughly $10-a-head you can split a vegan-friendly platter the size of the MCG, consisting of a variety of lentils, vegetables, salad and injera – a spongy, fermented Ethiopian flatbread made just around the corner. Popular beverages include Lipton Ice Tea and the malty nectar that is St George’s beer, imported directly to Footscray. Special mention to the beautiful paintings and tourism posters throughout the room and outstanding selection of tunes. They’ve just opened up a sister café nearby too. Can one overdose on lentils?Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Nhu Lan Bakery

Bakery · Footscray

"Nhu Lan Bakery, Footscray by Susu Studio. Visiting Nhu Lan is as much a cult food-experience as it is a thrilling exhibition of food prep and organisational skills. Witnessing a Vietnamese roll being assembled by 1 of the 173 staff behind the counter will make even the most efficient person feel like a disorganised sloth. You’re here for one thing though; bánh mì. The extensively-written-about pork rolls consistently come in at the top end of “best bánh mì” lists around Melbourne, so let's focus on the quiet-achieving tofu offering instead. Locals will forever passionately debate (ie. throw tantrums) over who produces a better tofu bánh mì; Nhu Lan or To’s. For us, Nhu Lan wins hands-down. The lemongrass, the sauce, the crispy rolls, the fried onion. It’s a masterpiece. Add a can of 100 Plus and you’ve got yourself the unofficial Footscray Meal-Deal. Don’t be thrown off by the perpetual sardine-can “line”, just jump in and join the ride.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

C.D.L.S. Paramount Pots

Garden center · West Footscray

"CDLS Paramount Pots, Footscray by Susu Studio. Are you ready to experience your grandparent’s idea of the happiest place on earth? Taking a green-thumb over to Paramount Pots for the first time elicits the kind of giddy reaction you can film and put on Youtube. Just like rolling up to a waterslide-park, except that the slides have been replaced with a rainbow of glazed pots, and the wave pool is an endless sea of succulents. The family owners are always incredibly generous and more excited about the place than their customers, if that's possible. On an ordinary day you could walk away with a beautiful new pot, a handful of clippings and a complimentary refreshing iced tea whilst you browse the ceramic maze. “Well-priced” is an understatement, and you will mostly come across forms, colours and sizes that are hard-to-find across Melbourne. Take the time to appreciate the terrazzo garden settings on offer and consider an early retirement spent tending to your little garden and drinking tea till you pass out from mature-aged excitement.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Hop Nation Brewing Co.

Brewery · Footscray

"Hop Nation Brewing Co., Footscray by Susu Studio. Earlier in 2016, Sam & Duncan opened the giant roller door to the instantly-popular brew bar, Hop Nation. The warehouse is located in a thick of factories in industrial Footscray. It also sits along an unofficial westside craft beer crawl, between stops at Two Birds in Spotswood and the well-stocked taps at Bar Josephine or The Night Heron (maybe grab a West City ale to stick with the local theme?) The cathedral-like space is seriously impressive, with a huge mezzanine overlooking the magical beer factory below. In a bid to make sure you never leave (as if you needed a reason!), there will often be a food truck parked out the front. They have found themselves amongst plenty of "Best of" lists and a loving place in our fridge. Current recommendation: ‘The Punch’ Mango Gose. But if you happen to read this during winter, let’s pray to the hop-gods that the barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout has been resurrected.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Scarlet Corner

Coffee shop · Footscray

"Scarlet Corner, Footscray by Susu Studio. Whilst most Melburnians will understandably associate memories of visiting Footscray with buying hot jam doughnuts from just down the road, we feel the ritualistic morning social gathering of locals at Scarlet Corner is a tradition of similar importance. Scarlet Corner brew fresh Vietnamese iced coffee throughout the day, even when most cafés decide it’s probably not the best idea to receive a booster after 3pm. Vietnamese iced coffee to the uninitiated is deep-roasted black coffee mixed with impossibly-sweet condensed milk, served over a mountain of ice. For those who refrain from drinking dairy, they will happily swap out the condensed milk for soy (a general no-no at other cafés.) Grab a pack of ‘sunflower snacks’ to go, and we’ll see you back here at 9am tomorrow.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Footscray Market

Market · Footscray

"Footscray Market, Footscray by Susu Studio. In contrast to the nearby Little Saigon Market, which was also due to be featured amongst Footscray’s landmarks before it was tragically destroyed by fire – Footscray Market is by no means a hidden gem. Iconic would be a more apt description. Take their gloriously 90’s logo plastered on all sides of the building for example. Stepping inside is continuously claimed to be an experience akin to time travel. It’s a fair call. The grimy halls lead you to many nooks where you find the real gold. The fruit & veg stalls are hit & miss at times (and the food-miles are questionable.) Regardless, it’s still pretty thrilling to buy lychees, plantains and mangoes with your loose change. The food court boasts a throwback design of perfectly-aligned circular tables and stools that you won’t find in the air-conditioned nightmare of modern shopping centres. Here you can grab a plate of fluorescent noodles from the creatively-named ‘Asian Food’. On the way out pick-up some fresh fish, imported Mexican chillies and a lacey pair of panties.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Ming Ming Gift Shop

Gift shop · Footscray

"Gift Shop, Footscray by Susu Studio. Part of the curator’s role for On The Grid means giving up your precious local secrets. However, any hesitation was put aside knowing this mammoth store will never ever run out of crazy crap that you never knew you needed. Granted, there is a big problem with single-use plastics and consumerism, this Gift Shop will still dig you out of the domestic dirt, time and time again – with style! Lost your phone charger? Here, have a red one for $2! Need a storage container? Here, choose from 20,000 different options (not exaggerating)! Need a shitload of fake flowers for some urgent reason? Here, drown yourself in multi-coloured plastic roses! When you want to break away from the monotony of Ikea, get lost in the aisles here for an hour. You can overhaul your entire kitchen with an array of pastel-coloured collanders for under $20. We’d like to see you try find a task they can’t be used for.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

61 Victoria St

Building · Footscray

"Perfect Splash, Footscray by Susu Studio. A homely little shop in the front of someone’s actual home right next to Middle Footscray Station. It is both the workshop and store for art and fashion items made by Westside residents, Alana and Annabelle. The space itself alone is worth a visit for the DIY interior enthusiast – those blue titles and pink walls aren’t going to show up on Tumblr themselves. In addition to their own creations, they also stock zines, candles, ceramics and clothes by fellow local makers. When we came to photograph, we actually met 2 of their collaborators who happened to be dropping off new things. Either that was really really well-planned, or it’s just a genuine hub of supportive like-minded artists. More of this please.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Brother Nancy

Cafe · West Footscray

"Brother Nancy, Footscray by Susu Studio. Deep in residential West Footscray you will find the treasure that is Brother Nancy, charmingly wedged in between a classic neighbourhood milk bar and a bus stop. The team at Brother Nancy seem to have a genuine commitment to completely messing with your idea of ‘brunch’, without stooping to the lowly act of smashing a defenceless avocado. We’re fine with this. There is some seriously ambitious food being pushed out of the tiny kitchen here. A constantly-evolving menu that reads like a Parisian bistro via Footscray Market consistently dishes up unexpected hits. Say hi to owner Leigh and he will be your best mate by the time you finish your coffee. Could you also kindly ask him to bring back that glorious thing with the fried sesame & coriander polenta chips?Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

Footscray Community Arts

Art center · Footscray

"Footscray Community Arts Centre, Footscray by Susu Studio. Beyond the culturally diverse exhibitions and events held at FCAC, this community space is a truly vital institution cultivating social progress through contemporary arts. Of huge importance, FCAC strives to provide a platform to recognise and celebrate the creativity within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Each year the various spaces at FCAC host Wominjeka Festival, ‘a rich and diverse program of art, music, performance and activities that deeply reflects Indigenous culture in Melbourne’s west, and Australia.’ The grounds of the centre feature a mix of colonial buildings, state of the art galleries, a family-friendly café, rolling lawns, palm trees, a murky river, industrial surroundings and sometimes hosts massive festivals like Laneway Festival. It’s all very Footscray.Photography by Gianna Rizzo."

"Shifting Worlds, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. A very recent addition Melbourne’s fashion landscape, Shifting Worlds - housed within the somewhat fluid No Order Market space, offers luxury niche fashion with a considered and fresh point of view. Spring Street Grocer

Gourmet grocery store · Melbourne

"Spring Street Grocer, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. There are simply not enough words or images we can include in this guide to do justice to the sensory joy of Spring St.Grocer. Open from early till late, what initially appears to be a lane edge coffee stop is in fact a well stocked grocer featuring local produce, take home dinners, delicious food during the day and shelves full of captivating produce and small goods. Couple with that the incredible daily changing Gelateria Primavera menu and the passionate and knowledgable staff happy to guide you through, and it feels a bit like heaven. Whatever you do, don't miss out on making your way down the spiral staircase to the cheese cellar housed within the tiled basement that also functions as an event space."

Bar Americano

"Bar Americano, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. Aperitivo or espresso, get your Italian fix in this intimate, tucked away bar with attention paid to the smallest of details. The knowledgeable bar tenders are as charming as the space and will craft drinks to each individual taste. With room for around only ten people it’s small and, to our minds, it’s perfect.A strict 'no photos' policy somehow makes us love it more... these pics are courtesy of creator Matt Bax & taken by Alicia Taylor."

Hihou

"Hihou, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. In keeping with it's name Hihou - 'secret treasure' - can be tricky to find, but well worth the hunt. Located on the corner of Spring Street, tucked around the corner down Flinders Lane is a small buzzer (pictured below) that leads to this upstairs bar. At Hihou every element is considered, from the minimal yet warm interior, to the hot towels on arrival, and most certainly to the extensive drinks list that includes an impressive range of Japanese whisky. With a wonderful selection of food to pair with your drinks Hihou is perfect for an intimate night out - but be sure to book as there is only room for a few at a time to enjoy this treasure!"

Cumulus Up.

Restaurant · Melbourne

"Cumulus Up, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. There's just something perfectly balanced about Cumulus Up. No matter what time you go, and whether it's simply for a drink or for a long meal, it always feels relaxed yet still special. The food is European and modern in the best possible way and the space strikes the perfect balance of industrial yet slick, cool yet cosy. If visiting Melbourne it's worth noting that anything chef Andrew McConnell has anything to do with is going to be brilliant, but we must say that of them all Cumulus Up is our favourite. And did we mention they serve the full menu late into the evening?"

Nicholas Building

Heritage building · Melbourne

"Nicholas Building, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. Home to a combination of retail boutiques, galleries, artists and a range of creative studios the Nicholas Building built in the 1920s is full of charm and character. Once the grandest building in the city, it features a leadlight thoroughfare ‘Cathedral Arcade’ and has housed generations of creatives including the original building’s Architect’s office until the 50s. It’s most enjoyable to explore its floors and find your own gold - our personal picks though are dot.COMME on level 3, Blindside Gallery on level 7 and local designers Kuwaii downstairs in the arcade."

Magic Mountain Saloon

Restaurant · Melbourne

"Magic Mountain Saloon, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. Open from 7am till 3am this three level eatery has got you sorted for breakfast, lunch, dinner and all the drinks in between. Serving up spicy Asian food, an extensive cocktails list (including a notable array of spritzers) as well as some really amazing non-alcoholic drinks, Magic Mountain also serves up atmosphere in large doses. You can grab a booth upstairs or a small intimate table for two tucked away by a window as you wind your way upstairs. While Magic Mountain Saloon offers a great night out, we're actually most hooked on their Asian style breakfast which is well worth trying out."

Izakaya Den

"Izakaya Den, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. A stairwell near the corner of Russell & Little Collins Street leads to Izakaya Den. On entering the basementeatery & bar you'll find a bustling crowd huddled around the bar and open kitchen on stools while flames and smoke crackle away on the nearby grill. The long, minimal, windowless space allows you to feel you've escaped the city above. Enjoy sake, shochu, Japanese beers or local wines - all the food is delicious but our personal favourites are the tuna tataki & the housemade marshmallow (not together, though that's up to you really...!)"

"ACCA, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. A bold rusted form, clad in a singular material, the ACCA building sits within the Southbank Arts District and was developed by Architects Wood Marsh as ‘a sculpture in which to show art’. Fonda Mexican

Mexican restaurant · Melbourne

"Fonda, Melbourne Cbd Southbank by Grosz Co Lab. Fonda offers super delicious Mexican food in a super relaxed atmosphere. We usually shy away from large spaces, but somehow Fonda manages to be warm and cosy despite its generous proportions. The team are as bright and friendly as the fit-out and the space is large enough to pile a big group of friends into. And being able to grab a quick bite without the customary Melbourne hour+ wait is particularly handy if you're seeing a show at fortyfivedownstairs, or film at Kino Cinema nearby."

"Grand Fathers Axe, Northcote Thornbury by Sherwood Gutterz. There is a very high potential of losing a few hours within the floor of this incredible furniture and wares establishment situated atop of Ruckus Hill, Northcote.
