On the Grid : Baker D. Chirico

"Bread and butter is one of life's most underrated pleasures. A freshly baked baguette with a fat dob of real butter, are you with me? I'm talking 50:50 ratio here. Well, if not, there's plenty more on offer in this beautifully designed shopfront. Sweet tooth? No worries. Sandwich on your lunch break? They've got you covered there too. Last minute dash for a gift? Pop in for a jar of homemade jam. If you're in Carlton, it goes without saying to drop in to Baker D Chirico, if not for the gluten then do it for the eye candy. This space is stunning." - Seven Seeds

On the Grid : Baker d Chirico

"Spending a lazy Sunday afternoon at the Botanical Garden is an aged old tradition for Melbournians and tourists alike. To prepare for the day ahead, pick up a bottle of Rosé and head to Baker d Chirico for fresh, out of the oven treats. The original bakery started in St. Kilda before opening its pop-up store in the South Yarra location. Make sure to visit the store before it disappears (and pray it sticks around for the long haul)." - Blueboat

"Break (sourdough) bread in Melbourne The stunning Baker D. Chirico does some of the best bread in Melbourne. This place is all about quality, premium bread, and that means high prices. But with those prices and at that standard, it comes with a pretty stunning design and store fit out. Unlike the other Daniel Chirico store in St Kilda, this store has no coffee machine, deli or other distractions. Wonderful curving wood infuse light and warmth into the space, and one wall is pared back to its rustic stone and scratchy paint. Black and white floor tiles are reflected in the packaging. The store, the building and the various packaging designs were a collaboration between FOD, architects March Studio, artist and fashion designers PAM and Daniel Chirico, the stellar artisan bread maker. According to team that worked on the project, there was a focus on “the juxtaposition between age-old tradition and craft, and contemporary design thinking with a surreal twist”, the store creates a unique, welcoming and inspiring experience. Even if design isn't your thing, it's worth picking up a loaf or two here."

This is just review of their pain au chocolate… which is disappointing, especially for $6-7. Barely there chocolate bar / inside (unlike the one that I had in another bakery) and I bought this yesterday and had it this morning, it already felt like eating a stale bread. Not much butter, not crunchy… just meh. Ive eaten a 2-3 day chocolate croissant before that has been squished inside my bag and that one still tasted better than this. I also bought some chocolate cookies from this place before and they were very disappointing chocolate cookies. Should have learn my lesson. Never again.

Really glad I found this bakery in Melbourne — genuinely satisfied. The girls working front of house are super friendly and attentive. The design of the place and the packaging are also worth appreciating. As for the food — I absolutely love it. The new items they bring out are always delicious. I’d highlight all their sourdough breads, and from the savoury options, the beef pie is a standout — the filling is excellent — and the veggie quiche is great too. The sausage roll is pretty good as well. I do miss the pickle beetroot sandwich and the chicken sandwich — both were amazing and I really hope they bring them back. On the sweet side, I’d highlight the hot cross buns — really good — and the Earl Grey pain au suisse. The pastry on the danishes is incredible too. I’d honestly try everything if I could. One thing I’d definitely request is for them to bring back that chocolate special they did for Valentine’s Day — it truly deserves to be a permanent item. Hope this review helps others — I’ll definitely keep coming back to try more and enjoy a coffee next door.

It was raining heavily today and I was drawn into this bakery while passing by. The young lady at the counter was very friendly and introduced the breads to us. The bread was also delicious! Highly recommend this bakery:)

Look at this piece of art! I am going to try everything they serve one day. Their bakery is one of the best here in Melbourne so delicious!

Google
I hate leaving a bad review. I honestly love the food from Baker D. Chirico, especially the bombolone and pastries. But I'm giving 2 stars because the staff lack customer service skills, to the point where I'm calling it rude. They never greet customers or even whisper a single word. Today the staff ignored me when I walked in (I was the only one in the store and I cheerfully said "good morning"), then proceeded to give me a cold stare as I was asking for 2 items. They didn't even tell me the total price, they just pointed at the P.O.S screen. As I left, I said nicely "have a nice day!", which got a slight smile and a whisper of "you too". As a neurodivergent person myself, I get that it can be hard or anxiety inducing to talk to people. But there's still an expectation from paying customers that a nice greeting from the shop front can make us customers feel valued and want to spend our money there. As much as I love the bread and pastries, the constant rude service has left a bad feeling with me, and I feel so this point that I can longer enter the store to buy something. Which is a shame, cause by the same reviews on Google for years, it seems nothing has changed or ever will.

Google
Great sourdough bread. Been around for many years and always consistent product. I only buy the wholewheat bread and casalinga loaf which are delicious. The casalinga makes excellent french toast as it soaks up all the egg and becomes super lush.

Google
I got the chocolate croissant to go. It was a good chocolate croissant but didn't taste a step above what you get at a lot of other bakery shops making a chocolate croissant. Maybe more butter would make it more flaky and amped up the flavour profile.

Google
Best tasting sausage roll in the world! (at least as far as I have tasted). I was offered chutney to go with it but refused because of my dietary restrictions; so glad I did because the flavour of the sausage roll was so awesome it didn't need any sauce (which may have detracted from the taste anyway),

Yelp
Baker D has been a favourite carb heaven for many years, but I love it especially more at Easter when they bring out their hot cross buns. Dense, fruit-packed with some decent spice, these are always a crowd pleaser with the grown-ups at Easter time. While you may need to take out a second mortgage (you'll need $20 to buy a half dozen) they're well worth the investment as they'll last for several days on the bench in their bag waiting for someone to say "is it time for a cup of tea and a hot crossie?"

Yelp
I'm am proud to say that this is my local bakery. Friendly staff, wonderful bread and pastries. So far I've tried their sourdough, caneles, pain au chocolat - and the best, ever Christmas fruit mince pies. Can't have enough of those mince pies.

Yelp
Carbohydrates are a good friend of mine. They keep me warm in winter and boosts of energy after long gym sessions. The main contributor of my carbohydrates is delicious bread which more often than not comes from Baker D. Chirico. Best bread on the PLANET. Light and fluffy croissants, thick cut bread and incredibly danish delicacies and all perfectly baked by talented little bakers. The thing that impressed me the most about Baker D. Chirico however was not the bread but the venue itself. It has a stunning, trendy layout that makes you wish it was a restaurant and bar as well. Simply stunning. Listen up guys, this place is going to get very popular very quickly, so check it out now before the line stretches around the corner.

Yelp
I can't believe I held out for 2 whole hours after Baker D. Chirico opened in Carlton before going in. I am amazed at my own restraint. I've had Danny Chirico's famous bready things in St Kilda before, and agree they're some of the best going, so I was pretty chuffed when the shop front on Faraday Street was boarded up with signs saying Chirico was coming to Carlton. Located between Carlton Wine Room and Brunetti's, over it's first weekend Chirico was pretty quiet, but I have no doubt it will get as jam packed as its south side counterpart once the word gets out. I treated myself to a croissant and it was pretty damn spectacular - fresh, light and flakey. The range of baked goods wasn't as big as I'd found in St Kilda, but I'm guessing that's because they had literally just opened - the service staff were still learning the ropes while I was in there. The fit out in the shop is really impressive - beautiful curved timber stretching from the walls up to the ceilings. I have a feeling the addition of Baker D. Chirico to Faraday Street is going to increase the popularity of this little foodie hamlet even more.

Yelp
This is my local bakery while living in Carlton and that makes me the luckiest woman ever! We purchased the honey bread (can't recall the correct name) and fell in love with the rich flavors; it tasted like Thanksgiving pumpkin spice with rich honey in each bite. The passion fruit tart was the perfect mix of sweet and tart. They have great ham and cheese croissants for a quick, and yummy, morning breakfast.

Yelp
One word describes my relationship to Baker D C's almond croissants: OBSESSION. Don't skip the loaves of bread. They are dense and super flavourful and make you feel like you've given yourself that well-deserved taste of luxury for the week. Plus, the shop girls are super sweet and will help you pick out the perfect treats to fit your tastes.

Yelp
'This is one of the places I've been meaning to go to for ages, but I never quite got around to finding out where it was. Stopped this morning to go to Brunettis, walked past it, decided to go in, saw the amazing wooden shelves and was like "Hey, this is that place I've been meaning to go to and never did! Awesome!". Almond croissant, wandered around Lygon for a bit on a quiet saturday morning. Really enjoyable. Lots of nice creamy almond butter filling.

Yelp
One of my favourite places. Every single thing I've had here (from their huge selection) has been outstanding. I'd particularly recommend the almond croissants (a weekend favourite), bombolone (little donut-like things filled with an amazing lemon custard), chocolate brownie, the Brie ficilles (little sandwiches - the most amazing combination of ingredients, all vegetarian), and the olive bread (fantastic with soup). They also add things constantly and I make a point of trying as much as I can!
