Best record store I found in town! Huge selection including way more local stuff than I found anywhere else, really well organised. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable, gave me lots of recommendations of records to check out and gigs to see while I was in town. Really made my trip to Melbourne so good! Well worth a stop for music lovers visiting Melbourne!

One of the more cooler, character driven record stores in Melb. Chris should trademark the use of funky, as I associate it with him. I got a jpegmafia record that was also hard to find and watched a gig while at it. I see what the hype of this place is about.

The first record store anywhere in the world that I've been welcomed to and given a run down of where to find what. Made to feel welcome. The jazz section runs deep and wide, I'll be back and I'm excited to go back.

Warm reception, amazing knowledge of the stock, great cool staff. I haven't been able to go in yonks but today I was so happy to be able to. Gotta love this Melbourne Institution.

We went here on a Saturday morning and were helped by Emelyne who is INCREDIBLE. She gave us amazing recommendations and you can tell she just loves the music and wants others to feel what she feels, turns out she’s also a talented DJ! This shop and their people are amazing. Highly recommend if you want to widen your horizons and explore some funk, soul, jazz and blues.

Yelp
Northside Records call themselves "The soul of Melbourne" and they ain't wrong baby. Chris Gill owns and runs this joint; and if you don't know who this bloke is, you should definitely drop in and say hey. He's the enormous white dude (i.e. tall) with the blondish Afro who you see around town -- The Prince of Gertrude Street, some say. He hosts a soul and funk show on RRR 102.7FM on Thursday afternoons called 'Get Down' and the dude seriously knows his shit. He's got this manner about him that's all chill and hip (in a good way) and you hear him interviewin' and actually relatin' to some serious soul and funk heavy hitters on his show. The store specialises in soul and funk, but also spreads its wings into hip hop, indie releases and all kinds of sweet vinyl goodness. You gotta check this place out and meet the man/myth for yourself. For real.

Yelp
Bless you, record stores of Melbourne, for keeping vinyl alive and reminding us all of what music is supposed to sound like. I know mp3s are cheap (sometimes free) and convenient, but they forsake quality of sound to a degree and that makes me sonically depressed. And so places like Northside cheer me up no end. Specialising in new and secondhand soul, funk, hip hop, afrobeat, reggae, dancehall, dubstep (and more) vinyl, from new releases to rare & collectibles. Spend a couple of hours in here flicking through the racks and stacks and you'll surely come away with something good. Check out Northside's excellent website for what's coming into store and the gig guide.

Yelp
I admit I'm a lazy music fan who'd rather download or copy music from a friend than trawl through record stores and have to heave boxes full of vinyl around every time I move house, but I've got a friend who's a sucker for records so I came to Northside in search of the perfect birthday gifts. I didn't have a specific title in mind, but I knew he loved old sole and came armed with a few of his favourite artists in the hope of finding something he had not yet heard. The guy that served me at Northside was absolutely fantastic - he didn't get all music-snob on me for having no clue, and was happy to listen to my incoherent rambling description of what I was after. I think he found it quite an exciting challenge, and picked a few suitable titles for me to choose between. I finally made a decision (based on the cover artwork, of course) and the shop dude was clearly excited and wanted me to come back in and tell him if my friend enjoyed it. I'm a bad customer and haven't gone back in yet, but my friend loooved his record. If one day I get an extra several hours in my day and better strength in my arms so decide to start collecting my favourite tunes on record, I'll be shopping at Northside regularly.

Yelp
Northside celebrates 10 years in existence! Now that trippy Taco is immediately next to Northside, the reasons for going here just got Double good. No longer do we have to petition for that pedestrian underground tunnel connecting the two sites! Some people call it a record store, I call it a medicine store; far more enjoyable than chugging down pills. Turntables are available to keep you digging the grooves- but please use at your own discretion. Always stocking a good section of Soul, Funk, R&B, Afrobeat, Hip-hop, and electronic cuts. A chance to get something rare on wax, by some very good artists is often available. Live in store gigs and Cameo's by some of the heavyweights in music, Live store gigs, and a fine music selection all make it reasons to come here, even more so when it's world record store day. Hit me up baby! Hit me up.... I need some sweet lovin' and food for the soul.

Yelp
This seems like a dying breed, doesn't it? Your neighborhood record shop, with a person working there that can name that song that you've been humming for years and can't find. The guy that runs this place also knows almost every gig in town and how to get tickets or what the names of the bandmembers are. He's just got a love for music and it shows. Really cool selection of records, and if he doesn't have it can usually track it down or point you in the right direction. Always playing great music in the place that just gets you in a happy mood, and if you're next door (Birdman Eating) for brunch, you can enjoy his tunes pouring out onto the sidewalk!
