This guide recommends visiting 7 neighbourhood(s) in Houston: East End, Greater Sharpstown, Heights, Montrose, Rice University West U, Upper Kirby and Woodlands Spring

Super Happy Fun Land

Performing arts theater · Greater Eastwood

"Super Happy Funland, East End. Words can’t do this place any justice. Go for puppet shows, Quintron and Ms. Pussycat (when they're passing through). Monotonix has played here. You're guaranteed cheap beer, Houston’s most eccentric youth, World Naked Bike Ride Days, experimental music, 9th-hand furniture, and decor left behind by the future ghost of Anne Rice."

Bohemeo's

Cafe · Eastwood

"Bohemeo's Café, East End. Bo's is the neighborhood hub that you want in every neighborhood in the city. They've got good coffee, great beer options, open mic nights, friendly staff, decent food, music on the weekends, festivals or food trucks sporadically, and just a comfortable vibe. Come around 6:30-7pm on Thursdays and join the (unaffiliated, but nice and social) [Bohemeo's Badass Bike Ride](https://www.facebook.com/groups/106062032876910/?ref=br_rs). And they're in Tlaquepaque Market ([Kanomwan Thai](http://www.houstonpress.com/location/kanomwan-thai-6798066), CrossFit Houston, [Blue Line East End](http://www.bluelinebikelab.com/storelocator/east-end-2.htm), etc) to boot."

El Bolillo Bakery

Bakery · Gulfgate

"El Bolillo, East End. Panaderia' means place of the bread. Maybe makers of the bread. And here that comes in all forms. Conchas, cuernitos, empanadas (de calabaza o de camote drool), wedding cake style cakes for any occasion, and—of course—tortillas. Depending on the time of day you can catch them baking all this goodness fresh and maybe even a Mexican hot chocolate. Pro tip: walk in, grab a tray, grab some tongs, and just start loading up. If you spend more than $10, we'd be surprised."

1515 Emancipation Ave

Building · Downtown

"Sparkleburger, East End. The etymology of the name is very unclear, but feel free to invent your own. And you'll have time to because the burgers are the size of a toddlers head, and the line can sometimes reach to midtown (and that's like real far, y'all). If you can eat a Sparkleburger in one sitting, well...it's been really nice knowing you. This is a local's spot in all senses of the word phrase. You're on their turf. Be nice and make new friends; you might be there a while."

The Green Bone

Dog day care center · Downtown

"The Green Bone Dog Lounge, East End. Despite the "Lounge" appendage to its name, Green Bone is not about popping bottles and boning bitches. The discerning dogs of the East End haul their humanoids here for gluten-free treats, natural goods and the day time company of the other East End ilk to which they're accustomed."

wired up

Permanently Closed

"Wired Up Records, East End. If you never knew the legend that was Domy Books (RIP 2006-2013), Wired Up Records can give you a little snapshot of what once was. And it reenforces the rumor that the East End is slowly becoming the Montrose of 1992. The record store is connected to [Cutthroat](http://www.onthegrid.city/houston/east-end/cutthroat-eastside) by a magic portal of time and space, so plan accordingly. The guy working in front of the shelves of curated art/design books, t-shirts, and movies is Bucky (of Domy fame), and you should go buy things from them so we can shut down Amazon and the world can be real again."

Voodoo Queen Daiquiri Dive

Bar & grill · Greater Eastwood

"Voodoo Queen, East End. If you thought that the Catholics and Evangelicals ran the East End, go head down Milby and check out this dark, shipwrecked, tiki, New Orleans, Satanism bar (just kidding about that last part. Heh. :| ) The darker stepbrother to [Moontower Inn](http://onthegrid.city/houston/east-end/moontower-inn), Voodoo Queen has half off po-boys every Tuesday, and can chicken and waffle better than most. The drinks take tiki to new places in very H-town style, the jukebox will not disappoint, and live music is alive and real every Thursday courtesy of surf rocker locals Son Of Beach.Oh, and bonus points are yours if the “Handbook for the Recently Deceased” means anything to you."

"Cutthroat Eastside, East End. "Manly grooming for manly men" may be the most regressive tagline of the 21st century, but if you're a dude or are looking for an expert dude cut by legitimately skilled barber babes, head your head East (or to Washington Ave) to the throat cutters. Expect tattoos, beards, and of course, good beer and good company. And if the manliness gets unwieldy, never fear, you can always step next door to Wired Up Records for some of life's more refined, feminine pleasures, like books and music and shit."

The Secret Group

Bar · Downtown

"The Secret Group, East End. "

East End Farmers Market

Farmers' market · Second Ward

"East End Market, East End. Pick a Sunday, grab some people you like alright enough, and bebop down the Navigation esplanade from 10AM-2PM for local food growers, food trucks/stalls, artists, performers, etc. Extra points if you ride your bike. Extra extra points if you buy a lot of stuff and make sure that the vendors keep having a reason to come back every Sunday."

Our Lady of Guadalupe Church

Catholic church · Second Ward

"Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, East End. In 1912, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church was one of the first churches in Houston to offer religious services in Spanish and schooling for Mexican-American students. Today the Church operates programs that provide food and shelter for the needy and serves over 3,500 families. Wonder over before or after a mass and you're likely to see families from the neighborhood pouring in or out, any of whom could probably share a ton of this church's historical role in their community. Then stick around for confession. How long has it been since you've been to Church? Honestly?"

Villa De Matel Convent

Convent · Wayside

"Villa de Matel & the Ruah Center, East End. Looking to get away without ACTUALLY getting away? The Ruah Center at Villa de Matel offers a place for you to relax in an environment of beauty, quiet and reverence while focusing on spiritual recreation. Prayer is also welcome for extended periods of time, if that is what you're looking for."

D & W Lounge

Lounge · Greater Eastwood

"D & W Lounge, East End. Tucked away from the hustle of the city, D&W Lounge is a dive bar's dive bar. Set up in a building from the 40s that was once a hardware store and a bar (at the same time), weird and quirky come together to deliver a collection of curio a la lava lamps and the heads of dead animals. Try to resist the urge to steal all the cool stuff. Come on the weekend and sing karaoke or pop songs translated to Spanish with the neighborhood's working and recently retired."

"Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, East End. Bored to death? Why not visit Forest Park Cemetery? Throughout this picturesque cemetery, you might find the headstones of Historic Houstonians such as Sharpshooter Joe Bowman, U.S. Senator Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr., Circus Owner George Washington Christy, and MLB player Richard Henry "Dickey" Kerr. Tell 'em we said, "wassuuupp.."

Tout Suite

Cafe · Downtown

"Tout Suite, East End. This haute-y coffee shop is perfect for a nice brunch with friends or to get some work done with a steady supply of sweets and coffee. The large space is filled with character and the treats are totally photo-worthy and super yummy."

Cafe TH

Permanently Closed

"Cafe TH, East End. Got a lunch date by yourself? No worries, Minh at Cafe TH will keep you company. Accompanying one of the best owners you'll meet, is some delicious and affordable Vietnamese food. Banh Mi, Pho (even vegan), rice plates, vermicelli soups, and a healthy array of vegan/veg options. Cafe TH has got the good shit."

Moon Tower Inn

American restaurant · Second Ward

"Moontower Inn, East End. Hot dogs. We're not talking the two hot dogs for a dollar at you local Ikea. Think foie gras, venison, wild board, among others. If that's not your style, they've got burgers and a huge selection of beers for you to enjoy outside during all 2 seasons of Houston's weather. Did we mention Monday Movie Night all summer? That's like all year for Houston."

Warehouse Live

Live music venue · Downtown

"Warehouse Live, East End. If you're looking for live entertainment in the East End, Warehouse Live is your spot. This converted 1920s Warehouse hosts a ton of different acts a year, everything from Mos Def to ICP to local comedy and spoken word shows, Warehouse Live is sure to have something going on. For the intellectuals, you can catch [The Moth's monthly StorySLAM](http://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/the-moth-storyslams-in-houston/) here. You also get to people watch when the more eclectic scenes come to town, and who doesn't love to do that?"

PNC Stadium

Stadium · Downtown

"BBVA Compass Stadium, East End. Sporting the signature Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash orange, the BBVA Compass Stadium is just plain cool to look at, and even cooler to sit inside. Fierce soccer fans from all over come to fill the seats to watch their team play in the open-air. Don't worry it's not all soccer. Non-soccer (or fútbol) fans can also go to enjoy a show or two, or some good ol' American college football—namely the TSU Tigers."

8th Wonder Brewery

Brewery · Downtown

"8th Wonder Brewing Company, East End. Named after the Astrodome's nickname as the 8th Wonder of the world, this brewery brings interesting craft beers to the East End. Marked by their signature military jeep or gold plated food truck, 8th Wonder always has something going on. With a tap room modeled after the Astrodome's infamous dome, complete with stadium seats and large communal tables, it's the go-to spot for East End and Downtown residents, workers, and explorers. We recommend the 8th Wonder and Moontower collab, Dome Faux'm."

Brothers Taco House

Mexican restaurant · Downtown

"Brother's Taco, East End. Going to Brother's Tacos feels very much like walking over to your mom's for some home cooked food (you know, like if your mom makes delicious tacos). This bubblegum pink building has been a staple for the OG East End set for years and now fulfills the authentic taco needs you never even knew you had. The line is usually out the door, but that just means it's good."

Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant & Lounge

Ethiopian restaurant · Sharpstown

"Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant & Lounge, Greater Sharpstown. As Yelp reviewers attest, the Lucy staff are very friendly and attentive. There's a totally relaxed vibe here, especially when sitting in the lounge area with low tables and sofas. Our waiter brought us a glass of honey wine to get us started and was eager to educate about the menu. We ordered Quanta Fitfit, dehydrated beef mixed with spongy pieces of Injera (flatbread made of Teff Flour) which is a savory, chewy Ethiopian comfort dish; and Yedoro Watt, chicken served in a clay pot with a mild chili bbq sauce and an egg, is hearty and rich, like mole. The coffee ceremony is a MUST. We suggest ordering upon arrival, so the service can be phased throughout your meal. Green (unroasted) coffee beans are browned in a small pan, ground by hand, then boiled in a clay pot called a Jebena. As incense burns the attendant slowly pours small cups of strong yet mellow coffee. We were delighted when the chef and other staff members stopped by to chat and share the pot with us."

Teo Chew Temple

Taoist temple · Bellaire West

"Teo Chew Temple, Greater Sharpstown. Located in a residential neighborhood and adjacent to Arthur Storey park, Teo Chew Buddhist temple is sure to provide an incredible experience. The architecture is absolutely breathtaking as is the craftsmanship of the sculptures and paintings. Incense is always burning in large pots outside of the temple so the air smells calming and fragrant."

Yangsheng Foot Spa

Foot care · Sharpstown

"Yang Sheng Foot Spa, Greater Sharpstown. Need to take an hour and relax? You've come to the right place. Don't let the name fool you because this place is so much more than a foot spa. They also offer full body massages and specialize in pain relief. Take a load off and let these massage therapists relax you. (Fair warning: although the prices are very reasonable, don't forget to tip properly! Massage places such as these generally expect at least a 25% tip.)"

Arthur Storey Park

Park · Bellaire West

"Arthur Storey Park, Greater Sharpstown. A 210-acre green space located in close proximity to the Chinatown region of Bellaire, this park is quite an oasis. Whether you're looking for a place to work out or wind down, Arthur Storey has much to offer. It hosts impressive running/walking/nature trails, a large pond with an island, a playground, picnic pavilions and more. Birding is also a draw because of the large water and marsh area."

New Saffron Kabob House

Afghani restaurant · Briar Meadow

"Saffron Kabob House, Greater Sharpstown. Our craving for Afghani fare led us to this fine eatery in little India. We always order the Mantu—light pillowy dumplings filled with lamb, onion and spices and topped with a savory yogurt lentil sauce—and Qabuli Palow, the famous Afghani dish of seasoned lamb shank served in a bed of saffron rice and pickled sweet carrots and raisins. A cozy cushioned seating area is offered for those who wish to sit crossed legged on the floor."

Harwin Central Mart

Shopping mall · Jeanetta

"Harwin Central Mart, Greater Sharpstown. New to Harwin? This is a good place to start. Much of what Harwin has to offer — costume jewelry, scarves, sunglasses, handbags, jewelry making supplies, cheap clothing, wigs and beauty supplies, handbags etc. – is represented here. Note, the “expert” knockoff bags (fendipradalouischanel) are conspicuously missing at the Mart. Apparently they are harder to come by on Harwin these days due to police cracking down on counterfeiters."

Six Ping

Chinese bakery · Sharpstown

"Six Ping Bakery, Greater Sharpstown. This small chain of Asian bakeries offers delicious breads, cookies, cakes and other treats. Enticing loaves and buns wrapped in cellophane line the shelves. They are stuffed with dreamy custards and creams and exotic fillings such as Taro, Green Tea, Red Bean and Mochi. We were intrigued by the Watermelon Toast and crab-shaped Super Q Kawaii Bread Crab Taro. Everything we tried was obviously baked fresh that day."

Xinjiang BBQ

Chinese restaurant · Sharpstown

"Xin Jiang BBQ, Greater Sharpstown. This bustling barbecue-skewer place is in Diho Plaza. Go for the skewers which have the perfect amount of char and spice. Grilled over charcoal with special authentic northern Chinese BBQ seasoning of cumin, crushed red pepper, garlic and salt they are messy and fun to eat. The lamb is a standout but try a variety of meats, offal and vegetables. Do be generous when ordering, the skewers are delicately portioned, two people can easily go through a couple dozen. Wash them down with cheap domestic and Chinese beer."

Fung's Kitchen

Chinese restaurant · Sharpstown

"Fung's Kitchen, Greater Sharpstown. Fungs is a frequent Sunday ritual and it's always crowded. Families and large groups gather around Lazy Susans creating a noisy and happy atmosphere. The carts come frequently and are well stocked with a fantastic variety of dim sum. There is always something new. Pork, shrimp, and vegetables form the basis for much of the fare, but ribs, mushrooms, duck, almond tea with puff pastry and lots of sweet and savory filled buns offer interesting variety. Don't forget to check the buffet for special items."

Tofu Village

Korean restaurant · Bellaire West

"Tofu Village, Greater Sharpstown. Tofu doesn't have to be your thing to enjoy this popular Korean eatery. The DIY BBQ is great, as are the variety of flavorful soups. Meals are accompanied by a lovely spread of banchan (side dishes) which includes a small whole fried fish. Definitely try a pancake. Served on cast iron platters with tangy soy dipping sauce they are crispy and come out piping hot. Complimentary barley tea and a cold yogurt drink at the end of the meal are nice touches."

SW Trading Accessory Plaza

Jewelry store · Jeanetta

"SW Trading, Greater Sharpstown. Family owned and operated SW Trading is a bauble hunter's paradise. Behind the modest storefront lies an accessories superstore exploding with wall to wall sparkle. An enormous selection of earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces and anklets beckon to those who appreciate a true bargain. The jewelry is the star here, other accessories such as luggage, handbags, hats and scarves are fun to browse — we smiled at handbags displaying actual metal Cadillac emblems — but aren't the real draw. With over 65,000 items in stock this is the largest of their 4 Harwin locations."

Shri Balaji Bhavan

Indian restaurant · Briar Meadow

"Shri Balaji, Greater Sharpstown. A popular counter service vegetarian place dominated by 2 big screens streaming mesmerizing Indian music videos. It's all good. We tried a Thali, the Pav Bhaji, a paper thin crispy Dosa (accompanied by the best Sambar I've tried), and our favorite, the Dahi Puri. One of their delicious signatures, it's a hard shell filled with chickpeas then drizzled with yogurt and tamarind and meant to be eaten in one bite."

Nu Cafe

Dessert shop · Bellaire West

"Nu Cafe, Greater Sharpstown. Our go-to icy dessert spot when in the neighborhood. Bright little clipboards sit by the register for patrons to select size, flavors, and sides. This ice absorbs flavors like no other shaved ice we've tried and without the artificial aftertaste. The texture is as fine as snow and appears as layers of folded ribbons on the plate. Nu also offers a selection of exotic smoothies, green and milk teas, and other beverages."

HK Dim Sum

Dim sum restaurant · Bellaire West

"Hong Kong Dim Sum, Greater Sharpstown. Located in the most happening plaza off Bellaire Boulevard, Hong Kong Dim Sum (also known as HK Dim Sum) offers mouth-watering, authentic Chinese dumplings. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful with the menu. We ate their shrimp and vegetable dumplings and for dessert, we enjoyed their sweet red bean and sesame seed dumplings."

H Mart

Asian grocery store · Bellaire West

"H Mart, Greater Sharpstown. H Mart is a pristine supermarket chain specializing in Korean and other Asian foods and housewares. There's a great selection of high quality produce, exotic fruit (logan, dragon fruit, Korean melon, sugar plums, durian, banana flower, jack fruit) and seafood. With lots of grazing opportunities at food sampling stations and row upon row of colorful imported packaged foods, it's well worth the trip just to browse."

Craftex Wholesale Distributor Inc.

Wholesale florist · Gulfton

"Craftex, Greater Sharpstown. Craftex has a great offering of discounted, current books. There are aisles of titles covering art, design, architecture, fashion, interiors, gardening, cooking and more. There are also candles, silk flowers, ribbon (good grosgrain selection), garden sculptures, pots, fountains, and a massive Christmas decor annex. The rows of decoratives, fake fruit, vases, ornaments etc. are fun to browse but for us the books alone make the journey worthwhile. Note: Craftex is a bit hidden and technically outside of the Greater Sharpstown boundary. Also, they are a wholesaler and require a tax id."

Banana Leaf

Malaysian restaurant · Bellaire West

"Banana Leaf, Greater Sharpstown. A mini-tour of Asia: Thai, Singaporean, Cantonese are all represented on Banana Leaf's expansive menu. A must is the Roti Canai, an Indian pancake with curry dipping sauce. It arrives piping hot with a warm curry dipping sauce and is buttery and flaky and perfectly starchy—you may end up ordering a second. Other faves are Beef Rendang, Hainanese Chicken and Sizzling Bean Curd. The fragrant yellow rice seasoned with the stock from Hainanese Chicken served in a red tub is a treat. For more heat ask the waitstaff for Malaysian spicy."

Aisha's Salon & Spa

Beauty salon · Briar Meadow

"Aisha's Salon & Spa, Greater Sharpstown. This place will take care of all of your cosmetic needs. From make up to hair styling to hair removal and so much more, Aisha's has you covered. Their $7 eyebrow threading service is lightning fast and there's no need to worry about over-plucking with these ladies. Aisha's even offers henna tattoo (aka mehndi)."

Subhlaxmi Grocers

Indian grocery store · Gulfton

"Subhalaxmi Grocers, Greater Sharpstown. Indian Grocery is a bit of a misnomer — Subhlaxmi is also an eclectic department store. It's a great spot to stock up on authentic Indian groceries; rice, dry fruits, spices, chuntneys, snacks, candy and tea abound; but also come to peruse a fine selection of ethnic handicrafts, trinkets and gifts."

Lei Low

Cocktail bar · Greater Heights

"Lei Low Rum & Tiki Bar, Heights. Hidden in a nondescript strip center lies the best tiki bar in Texas. Grab your friends and head to Lei Low for daiquiris, Mai Tais, and a host of other classic tiki beverages. If you dare, request one of their flaming group drinks such as the legendary Blue Lagoon. Wednesday nights, a local musician plays Hawaiian lap steel guitar. Pro tip: wear your Hawaiian shirt for all day happy hour specials. This is the real deal y'all."

Canino PRODUCE closed jan.26th 2019

Fried chicken and southern sides like creamed corn and mashed potatoes start at 11 am. Pro tip: order the fried chicken sandwich Lee's Way - topped with cole slaw!"

Liberty Kitchen also boasts a wide range of oysters sourced from the East, West, and Gulf coasts."

"Vinal Edge Records, Heights. These guys have been serving the Houston Heights since 1985. Great prices on old and new works. The owner Chuck Roast does not just have a great name, he runs a great store and has a wealth of knowledge to offer. If you like it, Chuck can find it. These guys will get you on the right track! Buy, sell, trade records/stereos with a true Heights original."

Johnny's Gold Brick

Bar · Greater Heights

"Johnny's Gold Brick, Heights. What once was the Boom Boom Room is now the home of Johnny's Goldbrick. Johnny's is not a place where you're gonna have to wait in line all night. Pretty easy to belly up to the bar and order from a strong cocktail menu. Johnny's Goldbrick is a proper bar so you'll find several Texas beers on tap and not to forget the ever tasty wine list. Outfitted with retro furniture and top notch bartenders makes for a Houston Heights second home."

Their milk and heavy cream come from Texas dairy farmers Mill-King Creamery in McGregor, Texas, and their eggs are delivered twice a week by Ole Dad Farms. Their good friends at The Barry Farm bring them figs, citrus, and other fresh ingredients they put in their ice cream.Fat Cat's ice cream pints and single-serve packages are made of leftover wheat straw and are compostable. They also use spoons made of environmentally friendly materials such as bio-plastics and cornstarch. Our advise to you is to double up on a scoop and waffle cone. What are you waiting for?"

S P J S T Lodge 88

"Lodge 88, Heights. Lodge 88 has been in the Heights for over 50 years and Bingo Night is an old school way of having a time. The bar, open every Thursday, carries $7.00 Pitchers of Shiner Bock, Miller Lite, and Bud Light. They also sell soft drinks, water, mixers, and snacks - don't skip the Frito pie. Cash only and limited to beer and wine, Rose Garden is a great option to show a friend real Houston and catch up over a game of pool."

Premium Draught Beer Shop

Beer store · Greater Heights

"Premium Draught, Heights. Premium Draught makes it easy to take a fresh tapped beer home to share with your friends. The concept for Premium Draught was born after one too many late nights navigating a crowded bar just to have a great beer unceremoniously poured into a dirty pint glass. They believe fresh draught beer shouldn’t be confined to the pub. You should choose when, where, how, and with whom you enjoy a fresh crafted beer. Beginning with their thoughtful selection process and the monitoring of brew dates, to the chemical free sterilization of their returnable bottles, they aim to satisfy beer enthusiasts’ need for easy access to a variety of unique beers at a more affordable price than you will find at the pub. And trust us, they have plenty for the ladies too. Pro tip: ask for an old fashioned while you shop!"

Blacksmith

Coffee shop · Montrose

"Blacksmith, Montrose. For decades Mary's stood as a symbol of acceptance and a place to meet like-minded folks in the gay community. In a day and age of a more open mindset, it shuttered its doors. It was repurposed by coffeesmiths David Buehrer and Ecky Prabanto as Blacksmith in 2013. The baristas make a point to ask your name, not just for coffee delivery, but for a friendly connection. Their small kitchen churns out delicious meals, and probably the best BLT we've ever had. The mural on the outside may be gone, but there is an ever-present homage to Mary's on the inside."

The Menil Collection

Art museum · Museum District

"The Menil Collection, Montrose. Surrounded by the most quintessential Montrose bungalows, The Menil Collection is one of our most beloved places in the neighborhood. The main building was designed by architect Renzo Piano in 1987, and distinctive ceiling louvers allow the space to be lit by natural light. It is a world class museum free of visual clutter and pretentiousness. Making art accessible and allowing visitors to have their own personal expericence with it was of the utmost importance to the museum's founders John and Dominique de Menil. In addition to providing our community with an incredible collection of art, the Menil has a conservation studio and research library, publishes books, and is an educator. Still growing, The Menil is truly a gift to our city."

The Printing Museum

Temporarily Closed

"The Printing Museum, Montrose. Once the Museum of Printing History, the newly refreshed Printing Museum showcases both the past and the future in printing. In an overly saturated digital world, it celebrates print media and exhibits and educates our community. It is one of only four institutions of its kind in the country. They also host hands-on classes, truly a great place to learn fundamental printing techniques."

Landmark's River Oaks Theatre

Movie theater · Neartown

"River Oaks Theater, Montrose. This Art Deco theater has been showing films since the late thirties. It might be small by today's theater standards, but it's the place to see independent and foreign language films. In addition to their regular screenings, they host midnight movie showings of cult classics like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Akira. You'll always find us there when a Miyazaki film is playing, subbed…naturally."

Canopy

Permanently Closed

"Canopy, Montrose. Start the morning right with a bloody mary and monkey bread at Canopy. The interior is like a breath of fresh air, modern and warm, refreshingly simple. The dog-friendly patio is lined with trees, and it's easy to forget you're off one of the main streets in the neighborhood. If you aren't looking for a full brunch, head next door to Woodbar for a coffee shop feel. You know, one with a full bar. Tip: They offer complementary valet, but we've never had a problem finding free parking on adjacent streets."

Space Montrose

Gift shop · Montrose

"Space Montrose, Montrose. Space has been around for nearly five years, but already feels like a Montrose institution. The shop is filled with tons of Texas made goods. We love supporting our neighborhood store who in turn supports our locals and artisans! It's the perfect place to find a unique gift for someone you care about…yourself included. Soaps, jewelry, art prints, adorable onesies, and more! It's not hard to guess that the folks behind the shop, Leila and Carlos, are incredibly kind. From small beginnings they've made something special, and true to our hood."

Poison Girl

Bar · Montrose

"Poison Girl, Montrose. This small dive doesn't put on airs, and it is easy to unwind here after a day of work. Pinball machines and nudie paintings line the wall, and there is a giant Kool Aid man on the back patio. They are known for their tremendous selection of whiskey and friendly patrons. So sit back, read the pinball machine displays, and drink like an adult."

Rothko Chapel

Temporarily Closed

"Rothko Chapel, Montrose. If you are ever in need of a quiet moment of thought, meditation, or prayer, you can find it at the Rothko Chapel. Spiritual or not, you will feel welcome and moved here. The dim, diffused light and the 14 panels by Mark Rothko that line the wall create a calm, peaceful space to contemplate. The chapel's other vocation is action, and provides a forum for human rights. Outside, is a beautiful green space, and a sculpture by Barnett Newman standing in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They host a myriad of events for the community from yoga and midnight-meditation to live music and lectures."

Mercantile

Cafe · Montrose

"Mercantile, Montrose. The hunt for the perfect coffee shop landed us at Mercantile and you can find us here working on our computers all the time. In the spirit of On the Grid we are sharing our spot, despite some hesitation. However, keep in mind that we will get cranky if our choice table is filled. After you finish your coffee and your work, ask our barista-turned-friend Jonathan for his recommendation of which beer to snag on your way out. They often host wine tastings as well, so lookout for that."

The Guild Shop

Consignment shop · Montrose

"The Guild Shop, Montrose. Quality, gently used goods fill the shelves of The Guild Shop. Sign up for their newsletter, they take consignments and donations on a schedule which ensures they can manage what goods are coming in. It was opened in 1962 by the Sewing Group of the Church of St. John the Divine, and is almost entirely run by volunteers. Proceeds go to assist the elderly in need, giving large donations to their beneficiary—St. James House, the Episcopal Diocesan retirement home, and many other humanitarian charities. See something you love, but it is more than you'd like to spend? Take a risk, and check the tag for the next set drop date. Just remember, it's for a good cause and there might be someone else doing the same thing."

Chapel of St. Basil

Chapel · Museum District

"Chapel of St. Basil, Montrose. The day we first visited the Chapel of St. Basil coincided with French Mass. There were dozens of children running around the church yard, dressed in their Sunday best speaking and screaming in French. Inside the chapel itself an organist and singer were practicing for service. It all felt very surreal and beautiful. The chapel is located inside St. Thomas University, and was designed by Philip Johnson in 1997. The structure is made of many beautiful curves and stark edges, making the chapel a centerpiece in the University. There are no interior lights, and there is no need with ample light from skylights and candles. You can visit the Chapel anytime during open hours, no need to be spiritual to appreciate great architecture."

Art League Houston

School · Neartown

"Art League Houston, Montrose. The Funnel Tunnel, a beloved esplanade project by Patrick Renner on Montrose Boulevard is off to New Orleans. The minds that envisioned this piece of civic art are still at it, exhibiting work that often speaks to social practices and justice. One of the cities oldest non-profit art organizations, the ALH was established to house a studio workshop and showcase local artists. Some years later, they added an adult art school which now offers a full range of classes. The number of sessions per class is tremendous. So much bang for your buck! Tip: View some art and then get some coffee at Inversion (an installation turned coffee shop), or vice versa!"

Ham Cycles

Bicycle Shop · Montrose

"Ham Cycles, Montrose. Ham caters to casual urban bikers and more serious road cyclers. Whichever you are, your time here will be spent with kind and knowledgable folks. The shop's mechanic is true to his customers, exploring all options and trying to keep costs down on repairs. If you have some cash to spare, they are Houston's only Cinelli dealer. Don't fret, they also have a full range of other brands."

Christy's

Donut shop · Neartown

"Christy's Donuts, Montrose. A seemingly hole-in-the-wall donut shop that always has a line to the door. Before you know it they're loading up your morning desserts almost quicker than you can select them. They always toss in a couple extra donut holes too! In addition to the donuts you cannot forget to get a pile of kolaches. If you aren't familiar with this pastry, think pig-in-the-blanket, but way better. We have the Czech immigrants to thank for this baked good, but Texans to thank for the addition of sausage, cheese, and sometimes when you're feeling spicy, jalapeños. Want to take it to another level? Throw some cajun influence in the mix with boudain."

The Teahouse

Bubble tea store · Montrose

"Teahouse, Montrose. A Taiwanese cream teahouse that journied all the way from Kaohsiung, it now supplies Houstonians with flavorful teas, smoothies, and slushies. I would try to avoid the after-school rush, but at any given moment there is probably a line to the door anyway. Service is swift, and before you know it your drink is in hand. Hang out and study (it's a little distracting for those of us that are less disciplined), or find table and play some games. Don't forget to add tapioca, or fruit jellies if you prefer."

Montrose Shop

Permanently Closed

"Montrose Shop, Montrose. Once an antique store, I would hardly recognize this place with it's fresh white paint and simple aesthetic. Named for it's neighborhood, this new to the scene shop, carries minimal home goods and quality, neutral wardrobe staples. The antithesis of throwaway fashion. It's simple and refreshing, and I hope they become a permanent fixture on Westheimer."

"Houston Center for Photography, Montrose. The HCP is a small contemporary photography gallery, and an important part of Houston's art community. In addition to their dedicated photo exhibitions, they host over 300 classes year-round. It doesn't matter how much you know, beginner or professional, they have you covered. In the back of the gallery there is an ample photography library with cozy seating. Great for research or inspiration. Their many events and lectures are a great way to network and learn. You might even seen the HCP on the streets in their Flash Drive truck—a mobile photography education unit."

Sound Exchange

Permanently Closed

"Sound Exchange, Montrose. In our favorite Montrose fashion, Sound Exchange is located in a home turned shop. Not the largest record collection in town, but one of the most curated. Be sure to ask if they don't have something. You might be met with the response to, "try back next week". Chances are, on your return you'll find just what you're looking for. If you don't have one, their once metal-dedicated room is now filled with turntables. If the one you have is giving you trouble, you can count on them to do the necessary repairs."

Byzantine Fresco Chapel

Temporarily Closed

"Byzantine Fresco Chapel, Montrose. The history of the Byzantine Fresco Chapel began with thievery. Looters removed fragile frescoes from a small chapel outside the Cypriot village of Lysi, and a dealer tried to sell them under the guise of representing a private collector. Suspicious, Dominque de Menil and her colleagues rescued the frescoes and began a search for the true owners, The Church of Cyprus. The frescoes were restored and given a long-term loan agreement with the Menil Collection. A building was constructed with great care to honor and house them, and that's where they resided until they were returned. The chapel did not sit bare for long. It has been given new life with site specific installations. Currently on view: The Fabiola Project by Francis Alÿs"

"Common Bond, Montrose. Common Bond is filled with natural light and a delicious buttery aroma. On par with the ambiance? Their sweet, sweet, delicious treats. If you'd like your pick I'd suggest an early arrival, especially to get one of those illusive almond croissants we keep hearing about. Some of the other most talked about sweets include the kougin amann and chocolate chip cookies."

Kay O'Toole

Interior designer · Montrose

"Kay O'Toole, Montrose. We caught Kay right in the middle of a renovation, but it was impossible not to pick up on her incredible eye and vast collection of antiques and eccentricities. Years ago we had the opportunity, on a home tour along with many Houstonians, to see the inside of her beautiful home tucked right behind her shop on the most traveled street in town. In the vein of her redo, we talked about the merits (or distinct lack there-of) of paint color names, and loved on her little black poodle. Tip: Park behind the shop, and bring an open ear. Kay is so friendly, and I think she knows everyone in town. Also, ask her about her new endeavor, it sounds exciting!"

Reeves Design + Art

Art gallery · Montrose

"Reeves Antiques, Montrose. Reeves made the switch to mid-century furniture by selling off 10,000 square feet of antiques, and starting fresh. A risk, but one that has panned out well for the father-son duo. They source quality, American made goods from across Texas, beautifully restored and sometimes refinished. One day while on the search for a dining table, Matt took us upstairs where he lived and showed us his own. While we didn't end up purchasing it, it was nice to see the care he took in finding us the perfect piece."

Cy Twombly Gallery

Art museum · Museum District

"Cy Twombly Gallery, Montrose. On the Menil Campus facing an incredible live oak tree, sits a small gallery devoted to the works of Cy Twombly. Natural light diffuses through sailcloth ceilings casting the large-scale paintings and minimal space in a soft light. Much like the main building of the collection, the presentation honors the work. Twombly was involved from its inception, sketching a design for architect Renzo Piano and deciding how to fill each of its rooms. It's not often that you can experience an artist's works in this way. With time, my own fondness for abstract painting has grown, and it's mostly thanks to the Twombly gallery."

Texas Art Supply

Art supply store · Montrose

"Texas Art Supply, Montrose. Serious art supplies to crafting goods, and everything in between. A day filled with ambivalence as it's almost a guarantee that they'll have everything you need and then some."

The Black Labrador

Permanently Closed

"The Black Labrador, Montrose. Dine outside with the vines and chess board in the summer, and inside snuggled up next to the fireplace in the winter. No matter the season, it's a great place to enjoy a pint and play some darts. Upstairs is Cezanne, an intimate jazz club that hosts a couple of great sets each night during the weekend. Seating is pretty limited, so arrive early."

Agora

Coffee shop · Montrose

"Agora, Montrose. Tucked behind a wall of shrubbery, Agora is a great place to work late into the night (they're open until 2 AM). The Greek decorations are perfectly suited to the name, and the space feels warm and relaxing. Head up the narrow stairs, drink in one hand and the other tightly gripped to the rail, find a corner and settle in. If you're tired of working, come on a Wednesday night and a troupe of belly dancers will be there providing entertainment."

Southland Hardware

Hardware store · Montrose

"Southland Hardware, Montrose. Within the walls of this cluttered, anachronistic hardware store you will find almost everything you need. A fixture in the city for ages, it's nice being able to avoid the trek to a big-box-store for that mid-project, "Oh Crap! I forgot to get that!" moment."

Baby Barnaby's

American restaurant · Montrose

"Baby Barnaby's, Montrose. The original Barnaby's Cafe is right next door if you need lunch or dinner, but if you're looking for breakfast this is the place to eat. The local chain was named for a beloved dog, and is adorned with bright stripes and paws, and of course welcomes your four-legged friend on the patio. On weekday mornings there is no need to jot your name down on the list, the norm for the weekend crowd. The orange juice is as fresh as the staff is friendly. Grab a glass, and don't try to resist the breakfast plate or the green eggs, scrambled with spinach, artichoke hearts, and melted cheese. Maybe, just maybe, a fluffy waffle too."

Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall

Art museum · Museum District

"Richmond Hall, Montrose. Dan Flavin's work with fluorescent light began when he attached a single eight-foot tube to his studio wall. A year after its installation he renamed the piece The Diagonal of May 25, 1963 (once The Diagonal of Ecstasy). This name was more representational of his work with light. While art is in the eye of the beholder, Flavin was clear that his interest in fluorescent lamps was based on the fact that they were readily available and preset in color and length. The installation at Richmond Hall was his penultimate work, and was completed by his studio after his death. It was designed specifically for the space, and when you walk into the building you are immediately in the work."

Brasil

Restaurant · Montrose

"Brasil, Montrose. You wouldn't guess that this cafe is on a busy street corner. The covered back patio is filled with trees, and makes for the perfect diversion. Inside you'll find a rotating art installation, and next door in the old Domy Books, a gallery with even more. For a great date night, check Brasil's calendar for movie nights and live music events."

Brazos Bookstore

Book store · Pemberton

"Brazos Bookstore, Rice University West U. Whoever declared print dead hasn’t stepped into Brazos Bookstore. Since the seventies, Brazos has remained a preeminent literary staple and event partner of the Houston community, with a passionately curated selection of spines and an impeccable level of service. The shop is easy to navigate and lovingly groomed… the tidy stacks of covers and white, well-ordered shelves give the place a crisp, welcoming hum. If you love the fresh smell of books and friendly Texas bookworms, head to this longstanding local treasure."

Local Foods - Rice Village

New American restaurant · Pemberton

"Local Foods, Rice University West U. Cheerful neon, gleaming subway tile, quirky fixtures, found objects – Local is a designer’s hedonist haven, a modern-industrial deli + diner with a retro twist, masterminded by the talent behind Houston’s Found for the Home interiors. And there’s more to savor than the scenery. As the gourmet bistro’s name suggests (blatantly tells you, really), the food is all local – Texas area farmers, fishermen, bread makers, egg producers, meat purveyors and specialty food artisans stock the fresh flavors behind the perfectly crafted sandwiches and crisp, colorful sides. Tap off the whole experience with a draught beer or an ice-cold cola. Our to-go staple: the farmhouse salad."

Tiny's No. 5

American restaurant · West University Place

"Tiny's No. 5, Rice University West U. Like a small slice of Eden in the heart of Houston, Tiny’s No. 5 is one of our favorite retreats for a leisurely brunch, a shaken cocktail, or a crumbly something sweet from their bakery. With its wicker and reclaimed wooden beams, climbing ivy, an expanse of pristine green lawn… you feel like you’re dining in a European garden, sipping a flat white and savoring the tranquility. Type nerds will love the gorgeously penned menu that complements perfectly Tiny’s upscale charm. And everybody will love their chocolate chip cookie, ranked #1 in Houston this past September."

The Ginger Man

Permanently Closed

"The Ginger Man, Rice University West U. There’s just nothing like an old pub, especially one tucked under the leafy arms of a charming, tree-lined street. This particular Ginger Man is the original of the beloved Texas chain, a deliciously divey watering hole with dozens of beers on draft and rows of long-planked wood tables on its cozy patio. Hit the jukebox, toss some darts and explore a pint of something new in this quintessential beer-lover’s bliss."

Crave Cupcakes

Cupcake shop · Pemberton

"Crave Cupcakes, Rice University West U. Behold the perfection of confection. Walking into Crave is like stepping into a freshly frosted fairyland, with its sugary white walls, stainless steel appliances, and cupcakes like little jewels in glass cases. A gourmet twist on a nostalgic favorite, Crave bakes dozens of flavors daily, from German Chocolate and Italian Cream to Strawberry, Pumpkin, Nutella, Red Velvet… it’s impossible to choose just one. Permanently Closed

Furniture store · Upper Kirby

"Sunset Settings, Rice University West U. With names like “The Republican” and “The Dirty Sanchez” – words you don’t hear too often in the same sentence – this fiery taco joint boasts a taco for every appetite and hosts creative monthly specials, featuring experimental flavor combos, regionally sourced ingredients, and award-winning salsa."

Helen Greek Food & Wine

Greek restaurant · Virginia Court

"Helen, Rice University West U. This newly opened Greek taverna introduces authentic flavors from all over Greece to the fresh tastes of Texas, combining, say, seafood plucked from the Gulf by their fisherman, Frixos, with beautifully plated native dishes. Helen boasts a daily-changing menu of locally-sourced, creative small plates and Houston’s first all-Hellenic wine list (not to mention, the second-largest in the nation – we’ll cheers to that). High, high ceilings, exposed brick and cozy candlelight offer diners an ambiance as warm and welcoming as their heartfelt motto: Siga, siga! (take it easy)."

Coppa Osteria

Italian restaurant · Pemberton

"Coppa Osteria, Rice University West U. It all starts in the Dough Room. Handmade pasta and pizza dough (made daily, of course) set the stage for this authentic Italian trattoria, where diners devour the beautifully simple, flavorful dishes and locals flock for their after-work aperitivo. Home to cozy date nights, family gatherings and sunny brunches on the patio (we’re suckers for a yellow umbrella), Coppa’s charm stems from its cheerful sophistication… and an extensive wine and cocktail list. Oh, and the pedestrian-friendly pizza window? One slice short of genius."
