"Rose Garden is one Houston’s coziest dive bars. Run by a no-nonsense proprietor, Rose, with an affinity for Elvis paraphernalia and old country tunes, Rose Garden has some of the cheapest beer and possibly the very best jukebox in town. Cash only and limited to beer and wine, Rose Garden is a great option to show a friend real Houston and catch up over a game of pool." - Manready Mercantile

"Rose, the proprietress of this cozy house-turned-dive, loves Elvis, so don’t be surprised to see pictures of the singer hanging everywhere. The jukebox is filled with old country classics, and you’ll often see people two-stepping on the small dance floor. If you miss Alice’s Tall Texan, this is the place." - Lane Gillespie, Megha McSwain

I'm giving Rose Garden a five star because it was exactly what I wanted. Small, quaint place where I can have a conversation with my lady. No frills or pretentious atmosphere, just a chill place to have a beer and hang out.

This is the best bar in Houston, bar none. Only bring people you'd be comfortable bringing to Sunday dinner at your parents' house. Rose suffers no fools. She is a treasure.

Google
It is a quaint old fashioned place studded with Elvis memorabilia from a different time and there is also a pool table, but it feels more like entering into somebody's living room possibly because the owner is so nice and welcoming. Outside, there is a raised and covered area surrounded by actual rose bushes and they are blooming at this time so we were litterally sitting in a rose garden. The Rose Garden is the place to go if you are tired of trendy noisy bars and you want to try something different.

Yelp
I love the name "Rose." There's something about it, and anyone named it, that you can't help but love. The naive Rose from "Golden Girls," my childhood favorite cartoon, Rose Petal, Rose from Titanic ... uh, Axl Rose. And then there's Rose Marie, the sassy -- yet incredibly sweet -- owner of the local neighborhood dive, Rose Garden. Set in The Heights, this unassuming bar is perfect for a low-key night with the gang: seriously cold bottled beer, a jukebox filled with country classics, pool table and gazebo-like patio. Everyone certainly knows everyone here, and on my first visit last night, I quickly felt the love -- along with a good buzz with their $1.50 a pop (cash only) prices. And to end this review on an even more positive note, a relative of Rose Marie offered to walk us ladies back to our friend's casa. How sweet is that? I can't even get a dude to open a door for me...

Yelp
Retro neighborhood dive bar. Great Juke box, pool table, bottled beer. Friendly place.

Yelp
Ice cold 2$ beers and the worst parking ever! I absolutely love this place! Don't let the parking throw you off, this is a great hidden gem. Great people, great atmosphere an absolute Houston treasure.

Yelp
It's a really cute house turned bar in the middle of The Heights. My friends and I came here after dinner for drinks and conversation back in June. Really cheap beer and glasses of chilled wine (2 types). There's an old jukebox if you're in the mood for tunes, but we just wanted to catch up on the years I was out of state. Rose is such a sweet heart and made us feel welcomed as newcomers. There were some local regulars already there snacking on peanuts and drinking beer. CASH only! And make sure you bring bug spray during the summer months or else you'll get eaten alive out in the pretty rose garden patio!!

Yelp
Rose Garden is a throw back dive that is slowing being surrounded by townhomes in Sunset Heights. The bar is of the last remaining ice houses that was purpose-built in the 1930's to serve the predominantly Polish (read beer guzzling) residents of the time. There's no booze, but you can bring your own. The owner, Rose Marie, is behind the bar and knows as much about the regulars as she does about her family. Newbies shouldn't be intimidated. She's accomodating. So show up with your buddies, but don't act like assholes. Rose stood up to a shot gun wielding bandit last Fall. She'll have no qualms about smacking you five across the lips. What you really need to know: + the jukebox kicks ass + good timing will result homemade Polish sausages on the house + lovers of velvet Elvi will be in heaven + ordering a Heineken will result in ridicule, get a Lone Star instead

Yelp
We just moved from our old house that was down the road from the Rose Garden and it is a big disappointment not being able to walk a block to get to this place. Fantastic people welcome you in, with polka and country music playing in the background! Great service and conversation are abundant and you can now enjoy the outdoor patio while the mosquitoes are away. There is a small brisket buffet setup inside that is great for when you get a hankering for a snack. It is hard to describe this place, so visit, you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I was at Rose Garden tonight (for the first time), and I couldn't have had a more welcoming experience. Really cute place. This is the definition of a friendly neighborhood bar, and I believe these people are like a small family. Ideal place to take a friend to have a beer and just talk for hours. I may not go every day, but I'll be back to Rose Garden soon and often.

Yelp
I read the other reviews and decided it was my kinda place. We like small local hangouts, and playing pool. I made arrangements to meet my boyfriend there. When I found the place, I was shocked to see how tiny it seemed! I was thinking, "Could 20 people even fit in there?" It was house-turned-bar that appeared to have been built in the 30 or 40's. When we went in, it was definitely all eyes on us for a minute. Rose was warm however, and we ordered two Lonestars off the advice of a previous review. The locals were an older crowd, but didn't mind us popping in. We even played a game of pool with them. Rose appreciated the tipping generousity of my boyfriend. She brought out Polish sausages for everyone to snack on! There's a lot of history in this place, with the building itself and the people that frequent it. We had sooo much fun, we'll definitely drop in again when in the area

Yelp
Love this historic Polish bar! Great owner and all of the regulars! Rose is an awesome bar owner and makes you feel right at home here.

Yelp
In a town like Houston - where EVERYONE is friendly - this place is not so friendly. Which makes me sorry to say. If you want a great dive bar, keep rolling. The regulars and the proprietress are all about keeping outsiders out and insiders in :(

Ted J.

Yelp
A great "True Texan Dive Bar" atmosphere. Rose is friendly and I truly enjoyed coming here. It's a great place to meet people and in my opinion is better than other bars in the area. Beers for $2 and wine for $3 and setups for $2. A great bar!

Yelp
I had visited this establishment on the weekends before and the bar owner's husband was there. I was encouraged to come in and meet the owner. Well, I did last night. I had always paid with cash, so I was unaware that they ONLY take cash, never asked. I would have gone to the atm and get cash, but one of the other customers paid for it and before I knew it, several of the regular customer had paid for several beers I didn't ask them to do this, they were very friendly. The owner of the bar ACCUSED (embarrassing) me of coming into the bar knowingly, to get free beer. The beer is cheap as it is and I would have been happy to go to the ATM down the street. I left after 2 beers and I left with several beers paid for by the friendly customers. I came back to give her a tip and she locked me out. I left her a $20 bill in her mail box. I will never go back there and I will tell everyone I know that the owner is a rude woman. She made her husband sit in the corner to watch TV to make sure I would not talk to him. I was surprised she was so rude after her husband spoke so highly of her. The customers are the highlight of this dive.

Yelp
If you're looking for a chill bar where everyone knows your name "The Rose Garden" is the place to be. Rose is sassy and always ready with a cold bottle of beer and a juke box full of old country classics:)

Wendy T.

Yelp
$3.50 for two beers!!! Super tiny and super cute. Just a few tables, a pool table, a well stocked juke and a pretty porch out back surrounded by roses. If nirvana can be a bar, this is it.

Brandon C.

Yelp
This place is right next to my dads house, and on nights that I visit, we go and have a couple of drinks and sit out on the patio and smoke a couple cigars and talk about the little things. The Rose Garden is one of those magical places like that, people get along, there is community hot dogs or pizza, colorful locals, and really really cheap Shiner Bock! I'll always think or The Rose Garden as one of my favorite bars.

Reid J.

Yelp
Probably my favorite bar. Rose is always there with some good conversation...sharing her huge sack of peanuts and popping popcorn. The jukebox is full of great old music. .25 cents per song like it should be. $2 beer always.

Audrey H.

Yelp
Wow- I loved this little place and the beer was only TWO BUCKS! It's very laid back and very small. The roses in the back are nice. I wouldn't suggest you go out of your way to go here but if you live in or near to the heights or are in the area this is a fantastic little place to check out. Also, if you don't like beer this might not be the place for you since they only serve beer. Oh, and cash only folks!

Brittany N.

Yelp
What a great little hole in the wall joint nestled in a older heights neighborhood. Surprising little wooden deck out back lined with rose bushes that transfers this dive bar into a backyard oasis. No frills, super old small TV, friendly locals and a cash only bar

Z C.

Yelp
Hop into your Delorian and travel WAY back in time for this dive! We found it on accident, and while we liked it, it is a bar populated by (mostly elderly) regulars that give you "that look" when you walk in, but quickly warm up to you. It's tiny, cramped, old, and the juke box hasn't been updated since the 70s, but it's quaint and friendly with the only pool table being the center attraction. Check it out - it's totally "heights" in the eccentric since.

Aimee P.

Yelp
I came last weekend and enjoyed the juke box, the good conversation and the backyard deck.

Camille G.

Yelp
I heard this was THE dive bar to visit in the Heights. Recently I went during a weekday by myself, about 8PM. Maybe it was cause I was alone, maybe it was cause it was early, I'll never know, but the regulars there didn't seem to be the 'embrace an outsider' type. Bartender included. I suppose one could argue that that sort of mentality is part of the essence of a dive bar, but whatever, I don't want to feel like the music stops and eyebrows scrunch when I walk into a place. I stuck around and played two games of pool with one of the men who insisted he play me, then left immediately. Yes the prices are awesome, but the uncomfortable feeling I got is not worth it. Also, did I mention it's the size of a large living room? Which only highlighted the 'point and stare' vibe, since I had nowhere to hide.

Jack H.

Yelp
Don't call it a "dive" bar. Cash only, old fixtures and pool table, classic juke box, cheap beer, a few dedicated regulars, and a small backyard patio with an apparent car port for a roof - everything else fits. But owner Rose Marie much prefers the "neighborhood" bar appellation. She lives across the street, and tends bar six nights a week, except Saturdays when her husband does the honors. It's a labor of love at the Rose Garden, and since she's only charging $1.50 a beer, she can run it any way she damn well pleases. We were here recently with a sizable group for a friend's birthday, and Rose Marie was kind enough to put out some sandwiches and snacks for us, and was constantly checking on us, so I hope we repaid her thoughtfulness sufficiently with our business. Playing flip cup by the end of the night buying 12 beers at a time, I think we did. A great bar where you can feel comfortable swilling a couple of oat sodas after work, just beware of one regular in particular challenging you to a game of pool - he'll run the table on you before you can chalk your stick.
