Google
A Texas-sized Art Shop focused on painting and drawing supplies, it has an extensive collection of nice paintbrushes, different canvas types, paints from oil to spray, and tons of markers, pens, pencils, and paper types. They have premade kits and other craft supplies for kids. They do not focus on fiber arts or similar crafts. The employees were very helpful as we were looking around.

Google
Love this store. Pretty laid back with a good selection. Staff are there if you want help but don’t bother you if you want to browse. The notice board in the front always makes interesting reading to learn about different classes and shows in the area.

Google
Shouting from the rooftops about how amazing this local store is! I had an urgent need for Duralar protective covering, and they had it in stock! Moreover, Michael took great care of me. The whole team was friendly, and the store had a great, upbeat energy with everyone actively helping customers. Five-star recommendation—and then some!

Google
This is my go to art shop! Robust selection, they almost always have what I need. Might not always have the most niche products or the biggest range in each category, but nonetheless super excellent art store with good deals for students and teachers.

Google
This place is absolute dream! I must say I was def overwhelmed as I was just gonna get some markers and colored pencils. They have about everything from candles, cards, cutesy items, markers, pens, paint... you name it. It's a fun adventure walking down the aisles and seeing variety of many things. I love how clean and well-organized the store was. all staffs I encountered were friendly and ready-to-help. it's crazy to learn that the place has been around ever since 1960s!! I live super close-by and I can't imagine I've never been here until now. I know now where to go if I ever need anything. also they have a LOT of coloring books!! and gigantic brushes, almost look like mini brooms!

Google
I know nothing about painting. My friend sent me with a list of items to buy. The gentleman there was extremely helpful and walked me through explaining the paints, brushes and types of canvases I would need. Everyone was so helpful. Including helping me bring everything out to my car. The assortment is incredible. They have everything and my 5 year old daughter loved exploring. I’ll be back.

Google
Such a neat store! I found some great puzzles and greeting cards. We had excellent customer service from Shea. We will definitely be coming to shop here more often.

Yelp
This is my favorite art store! This isn't a bargain store, but the prices are reasonable. They have an impressive selection of supplies for all kinds of art and crafting projects. I've come here for children's art supplies, gifts, and paintbrushes. Their paintbrush selection is fantastic--I've used some for painting and even repurposed others for makeup, and they've all worked great. They carry everything you could possibly need: brushes, paint, canvases, drawing supplies like pencils, pens, chalk, and charcoal, and a huge variety of crafting materials. You'll find jewelry-making supplies, sand art, glitter, stencils, scrapbooking items, face paint, gold leaf, and even supplies for sculpture. The store is well-organized, and the staff is always helpful if you need to find something or have questions. It's a place where you can find inspiration for any creative project. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in Montrose!

L B.

Yelp
It's really nice to be able to come in and see and touch the art supplies. Keep it local! Knowledgeable staff is always on hand to help out.

Rachel S.

Yelp
One of the biggest art supply stores that I've had the pleasure of visiting! Texas Art Supply mostly caters toward people who are making traditional visual art, eg watercolor painters, marker artists, acrylic painters. They carry a huge variety of high end art supplies like liquitex and golden acrylic paints, Winsor and newton watercolors, posca pens, Higgins ink, caran d'ache pencils, etc. a lot of the stuff they sell is at a reduced price from what you would find at dick blick. I was impressed by the selection and will definitely be back after I have saved more money for art supplies haha!

The Thumbs Critic ..

Yelp
This is a store specializing in art supplies, art hardware, and specialty paper! They also sell trinkets and games. The store has been open for several decades and is always a welcome sight when I drive through Montrose. There's a 3rd floor, which is closed to the public. The building appears to be from the 1970s, and as a fan of mid-20th-century architecture, I'd love to explore that floor. Unfortunately, I'm not a rule-breaker, so I haven't snuck up there.

Yelp
I'm a cosplayer and I love this place. I know that may sound weird considering this isn't a fabric store and isn't aimed at textiles, but I have lost track of how many last-minute trips I've made here because I was working on some goofy-ass prop the day before a convention. Stuff I have been able to locate here that's saved my ass at the last second: * Stained glass paint when I decided two days before a convention I needed to have a flask that looked like a Max Revive. * TONS of acrylic paint (which can absolutely be watered down to dye synthetic fabrics). * Yellow "crime scene" style tape, but it's actually sticky tape and fits in a standard tape dispenser. Excellent for a white collar criminal with an office job. (Or for a dork like me who was cosplaying Carmen Sandiego and thought it would be fun to take the leftover tape to work). * Pretty much any shape, size, or color of whatever marker, pencil, or pen you're looking for, and probably a few more you didn't even know about. * Tape and stickers that range from cute and scrapbooky, to suitable for heavy duty fixing/repurposing jobs. This is, overall, an excellent place for makers. Employees have always been helpful and knowledgeable, and I've been able to get things in one trip here that would otherwise have me running to the hardware store, the office supply store, and a couple of different big-box craft stores.

Maria E.

Yelp
FYI: They don't carry any supplies for textile, fiber, or embroidery art. I asked why and was told that they just didn't sell. Bummer. Nonetheless, this is a great store. I was really impressed at their selection for painters and pencil artists. Better than any chain craft stores. Their color pencil selection was top notch: all sorts of Prismacolor kits, professional grade sets from Faber-Castell, Caran D'ache, etc., and much more. It's not only supplies for pro artists as their selection and pricing varies. They also have stuff for kids, particularly a large variety of coloring books. Friendly staff. Large parking area. Although I wasn't able to find the supplies I needed here, I highly recommend this store for all your artistic needs.

Tracy P.

Yelp
Good selection, most of the employees are helpful, prices kinda high....but that's with everything

Fox E.

Yelp
Not to be confused with the Lexus Art Supply, which sells paintings of expensive cars and nothing else. If you want art supplies, this is an excellent option located right in the heart of Montrose, with all kinds of amazing stuff that you wouldn't even expect to find here. Prices aren't cheap, but they aren't too expensive, and service is really friendly. So it's no surprise that this is one of the popular gems of Montrose, which is an Arts community, so it's perfectly placed.

Vinh N.

Yelp
Well if you need to get art supplies in Houston, there's no better place as they seem to have everything for drawing and painting. They have a discount for students and teachers also. Note I didn't say art students and art teachers. When I asked them if being an adjunct professor counted, the nice man said yes it did. Score! The prices are cheaper than what I've seen on Amazon, and I'd rather give my money to this store locally than say... Hobby Lobby.

Yelp
I've passed by this place a million times but never needed to go in as my craft is sewing... UNTIL, that is, I began taking fashion design courses at HCC where I needed art supplies for my fashion sketching class! This is heaven on earth for artists! So. Many. Options! They have many different brands available for each type of item you're looking for. If they don't have it on the shelf, talk to an associate who will contact their warehouse (which is literally right behind this store) and if the warehouse has it in stock, you can purchase it right then and there! So convenient. Shoutout Eric, the store associate who did a phenomenal job with helping me find all of my school supplies! I've never had to purchase these types of materials before and he approached me as I looked like I had no clue what I was doing (my face gave that away ). He was super patient in helping me find everything I needed! Thanks for all of your help, Eric!!!! ProTip: If you're a student looking for supplies and have a written list ONLY, Google photos of what you need to make finding the items easier. My professor provided us with both a written list and pictorial list - those photos made sure that Eric was leading me to the correct item each time. Also, 10% discount for students and teachers! Woohoo!!!

Yelp
Best in the area, but I'm conflicted in saying that because a city this big deserves better. I used to live down the street from Blicks in Chicago, and that was a veritable wonderland of everything imaginable related to art, but that's no surprise since the School of the Art Institute of Chicago was a hop, skip & a jump away. Every possible size and thickness of stretched canvas frame was there. I do love TAS in a nostalgic way. I used to come here when I lived in Houston before, and coming from an artsy family, I could find all manner of supplies in here, and I actually dig the vibe of feeling like I hit my head and woke up in 1985. No, really. This store looks the same as it probably did back then, and I'm here for it. I just wish it had the selection that a place like Blicks had. That place is insane.

Donna J.

Yelp
Always stop in when I visit Houston. Prices are reasonable and I always manage to find supplies I need, want to try or have run out of. Paints, pens, pastels, markers, paper, children's craft supplies, substrates, books. They have it all, and more

Suz W.

Yelp
My Happy Place I've been going to Texas Art Supply for decades. No matter what you want, they probably have it, and at the best price you are likely to find it. The staff are great. You can order online, but if you live in Houston they have several locations and who can argue with instant gratification?

Kass V.

Yelp
Poor service! Were so rude to my sister, just not it tbh. Will not be coming back to here again!

Eyen O E.

Yelp
I purchased several items on 09/15 for a total of $142.46, one of which is a specific 30 x 40 Claybord for $119 something dollars. Few days later, I saw another charge from Texas Art Supply for $119.64. At this point, I knew I wasn't anywhere near the store that day so I freaked out. My immediate thought was that I got hacked, which partially I did! I called the store to inform them of this fraud and the lady I spoke with said to call my credit card company immediately, in which I did! Shorty after, I called the store again and spoke with a manager who investigated the issue. Few days later he called me saying that the cashier accidentally rang me for 2 Claybords and only charged me for one, then few days later their accounting saw the discrepancy and decided to MANUALLY CHARGE ME for another Claybord, which doesn't make any sense since I just got one. I went through the whole fiasco of cancelling my cards, etc. I am in complete disbelief as to what transpired and I find it so shady to charge a customer without their consent and without investigating. I want everyone to know that your credit card information is not safe in this store! They can manually get all the information and double charge you for something you didn't even buy. Please check your statements. All I got from the manager was "sorry you had to go through that but I guess the good thing is you didn't get hacked".

Yelp
Between the excellent selection, wonderful service and great location, texas art supply has always been my go to for art supplies. It's much more reliable than shopping online (they won't try to pass off returned used items as new like amazon). And I always find my self just browsing through the whole store even if I just came in for one thing because it's just such a nice experience. I highly recommend any texas art supply but especially this location.

Kamille D.

Yelp
Let me start by saying GO TO JERRYS!!! They have the BEST customer service I have ever seen in my life I experienced the worst customer service at TEXAS ART SUPPLY. We were inside (and have been there for about 30 minutes) and as soon as the clock struck 7pm We were forced to leave without making a purchase. They would not even give us five minutes over. An older white guy with a white beard. When I went to Jerry's, the customer service was amazing, and they answered questions beyond me. There was a distinct difference in between the two. Please do not go to Texas Art Supply over Jerry's. It truly makes no sense even with the size of the store to choose Texas art supply. I never leave reviews but I'm leaving this for anyone who needs a real review. Just the overall experience even outside of my review.... Jerry's is just way better. After going to Jerry's, I can't even believe I was going to take his art supply in the first place.

Meade B.

Yelp
When this native Montrosian comes back to Houston for a visit, a trip to old stomping grounds is in order. I first went to Texas Art Supply with my interior designer dad probably in 1966 when I was about 5 - they'd been open a few years, and the place still makes me feel like I could create anything just by walking through the door. It's a unique sensation one can't get at a big box chain art store - I've tried to content myself with some in Nashville, but tried the rest, come back to the best as the saying goes. I can shop the excellent online selection, but a December visit means I'd best leave some suitcase room! The knowledgeable friendly staff are always the icing on my Christmastime cake - I never fail to find something unique for the "have everything" artsy people on my list. Here's to another 60+ years for them!

Marge S.

Yelp
Project overwhelm! This is like Art Depot, Paints and Brushes R Us. You get the idea. The place is a warehouse of art supplies. All well organized and neatly displayed. Staff is helpful and friendly and go out of their way to help you find a requested item. I found prices better than some of the other art supply stores I have recently visited. But if you go - go with a list because it is overwhelming and if you have an art supply problem, like I do, you may get yourself in trouble here.

Sara I.

Yelp
So it looks as if i'm the 100th reviewer for this art supply store.. Well.. here we go. What can I say? This store was underwhelming and overwhelming in so may ways. The non-existent service was the downfall of Texas Art Supply. The staff was extremely drab and dopey. No one asked if I needed help in any of the sections that I visited. Mind you, this store is huge! Everything here is all art related obviously, thrown in the mix with colorful gifts and such. I had to browse through several isles just to find all of the items I was looking for. I specially came in here to pick up various mediums of art. Several others were getting the assistance they needed.. Basically this place has a soft spot for racism and it was quite evident upon entering the store. I was not greeted upon entering but the two individuals behind me were. I wasn't the only one who experienced this strange sense of racism.. my sister did as well. Other than that, the overall complacent attitude and the aloofness was just enough for me to grab my items and leave. If you're a hipster who seriously doesn't care for proper service.. then you'll be okay. Hipsters seem to live in their own world anyway. But as for me? Nah. I wont be back in this 80's style zombie place of a store.

Gary W.

Yelp
I love it here! I feel like I live here. I'm constantly coming in for more tools for my artwork. And the staff always ensures I receive my teacher discount! (They also discount to students)

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Stopped in for the first time today and this store is so huge! So many different supplies for crafting all sorts of things using all types of art mediums. It is deceiving from the outside but once you walk in there it is so big with lots of different papers, canvas, pens/markers/paints. It was fun to wander through and get inspired to be crafty. The prices are pretty good and they also offer teachers and students discounts, which is so cool!!

Mike T.

Yelp
This place has the best watercolor paints and paper in town- lovely people as well! I go there often!

Nina A.

Yelp
First checked out Michael's for origami paper and they had none. But Texas Art Supply had tons!! Very happy with the selection here - this will become my go-to art store from now on.

Farrah A.

Yelp
Aside from scrapbooking, making jewelry, framing and doodling on a cocktail napkin at the bar, I wouldn't really consider myself an artist--yet. I finally made my first trip to Texas Art Supply this week in search of some random items: paints, butcher paper, brushes, and yes, even some scrapbooking essentials. I didn't know where to begin or what exactly to buy, but the *extremely* helpful and knowledgeable staff pointed me in all the right directions. In a hurry, I was in and out before I could say "wham, bam, thank you, ma'am" ... er, Texas Art Supply!

Angela M.

Yelp
Helpful, friendly employees. Good range of stock, and a fun place to find unique gifts. Locally-own business that has been in Houston for many years.

Emmanuel T.

Yelp
This store is an artist's paradise. They have everything you may need, or didn't know you needed. They carry a wide variety of items from handmade paper, to architectural design supplies, to just plain ol' #2 pencils. The prices are a hit or a miss, they have a list prive and a TAS price which in my case was about 33% less. In addition to this they offer a student/teacher discount. It is very quaint and demure on the outside, but that boxy building can hold lots of stuff. Also the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They offer very helpful answers and advice if asked.

Everett P.

Yelp
i've been here tons of times and it's always a joy to come here. they have so much stuff- it's honestly a little insane. you name it, and they probably have it. great for an adventure through the shelves to look around, or for buying specific supplies.

Rena G.

Yelp
Texas Art Supply is where you go when you're looking for something and think "nah, they're not gonna have that." because 9 times out of 10, they have it. If you're into painting, calligraphy, photography, sculpting, you name it, they have the supplies you need. I am taking a star away because they don't carry beading supplies other than the kits for kiddos but hey, I have other stores for that. The employees are nice, they leave you alone to find what you're looking for but they do offer assistance if you have any questions. Most recently we stopped in when we were working on a project and needed rubber silicone. My immediate stop is Jerry's Artarama but they didn't carry the brand we were looking for. As soon as we thought of TAS, we called them and we found out that they carry "Smooth On." No other stores in Houston carry it and TAS does. We stopped in, found what we needed and went home to complete our task. We were so happy because I really didn't want to wait to order it online. Their prices are reasonable too. Of course since these are legit art supplies, the prices can be a bit pricey but not outrageous. Now if you're purchasing like wooden dowels, popsicle sticks, mixing cups, stuff like that, the prices are inflated. Go to the dollar store and save some dinero. Other than that, prices are good. Parking is no problemo since they have a huge private lot. When I'm working on a project, my first stop is Jerry's but when I'm looking for something that no one else has, usually Texas Art Supply has my back.

Marcelle P.

Yelp
Love this place. Anything you needed you will find it. I am an artist and I went everywhere like HOBBY LOBBY,MICHEAL ,WALL MARK etc...who are nice but limited on supplies.....with TEXAS ART SUPPLY I always find what I needed and more

Jenna P.

Yelp
Positives: huge store with many options. Negatives: the staff is rude and wants to be out the door when they close at 8pm and they will hound you and be rude until you leave. I left at 8:03 last night and they were extremely aggressive and rude. Many items can be found elsewhere at better rates. Very disappointed.

Kishana S.

Yelp
I had an Awesome Sunday !! I had a chance to get creative at a free class today. We did tissue paper flowers and garland flowers It was awesome kids and adults friendly_

Casha R.

Yelp
This is my favorite art store; I get happy when I walk through their doors. Here's what I love about it: - The selection is amazing. They have everything that I need ! - Parking is always so abundant. - The staff are soooooo nice and friendly. They are always so personable and knowledgeable. - They give a student discount of 10% - They usually have everything that's on their website in store.

David N.

Yelp
Since I started getting into photography I mainly just stuck to digital prints and online sharing of images. However, recently at work there was a photo contest in which I needed to create some prints and actually mount them and submit them in an envelope. I had no idea of where to go for such items. Luckily, there is the Texas Art Supply. This store is awesome. It has it's own private lot, which is always a plus in the Montrose area. They have everything you could want related to art and physical media. I ended up buying a few pieces of foam board, and large folder to store my prints for submission. I also went ahead and picked up and album to show off my physical portfolio. Sad to report, I did not win my photo contest at work but it gave me a push in the right direction of what I needed to progress in my hobby.

Saba E.

Yelp
What a lovely store! They have just about EVERY art supply for any project for any age! The staff is really helpful as well, and they all really know about art supplies for whatever project you may be considering. I hope to return as I progress with art projects. Also, their prices are MUCH cheaper than other stores! This was a surprise for me as I assumed "Art Supply" stores were money pits. I was happy to be proven wrong! See you soon, TAS!

AJ P.

Yelp
I travelled from Dallas and this is always a 1st stop shop when I arrive! Love infinitely!

Walter M.

Yelp
One of the best art supply stores I have ever seen. Quality supplies at reasonable prices.

Tammy D.

Yelp
I can't believe I waited so long to go here. I love this place!!! Take all my money!!

Daniel L.

Yelp
Texas Art Supply provides the essential components when I have decided to undertake my DIY (do it yourself) reckless art creation in an attempt to do something creative which will decorate either my office or my home, carefully nestled among the Star Wars figurines and my books. They have pretty much everything you need from spraypaint to popsicle sticks. You have driven by it one million times. Stop by here, pick up some stuff, and unleash your inner artist. [[Review #400]]

Yelp
After reading some of the other reviews for this place I will admit I was a little worried. But, since I just moved to Houston from Boston I needed to find an art store for supplies. The store had everything I needed/wanted. Good selection of supplies that I was used to getting in Boston. Some of the prices, as others have pointed out, seem to be a little pricey but overall I didn't think they were too bad...about the same I was paying before hand. As for the workers, most people seem to give them negative comments. Granted I didn't ask for help so I can comment on that side of it, a few workers asked if I needed any people and when I checked out the guy at the register seemed friendly. The only other problem was location. I ended up driving past it a few times...but this is probably more so of me new to the city. Overall its a good art store that has everything you need at prices I expected to pay. I for one will be shopping there again.

Walter S.

Yelp
Best place in town to get paints on the fly.

Ellen M.

Yelp
Love love love this place. It's got everything you need, the staff is super helpful, and the prices are very reasonable. If I'm in need of art supplies this is where I go hands down.

Samuel B.

Yelp
Awesome store with fair prices and accompanied by lovely staff. There is so much inside that it's overwhelming, but will definitely come by whenever I wanna splurge. Side note: Don't leave your stuff visible in the car, otherwise they might break into it. The area is pretty, but the crime is still heavy considering the location.

Jeannie M.

Yelp
I worked for this company for years. It is the only job i ever absolutely, truly loved! The company allows its employees to express their artistic talents and strives to satisfy every single customer. If i still lived in the area, i would be there, right now. Go in, look around, and you will learn something new, every single day.

AJ K.

Yelp
Always helpful staff and a huge selection. I've never been disappointed here. I read a review that said this a "soft spot for racism" and I have NEVER had that experience. I love this place and always feel welcomed. If you're an "elite"-ist and don't get the red carpet rolled out for you then that's probably on you more than anyone else.

Robert F.

Yelp
I love this place! They have everything artists need. I could spend hours in this place. The staff is very friendly and always eager to help. I highly recommend Texas Art Supply.

Becca D.

Yelp
This place rocks! They have every art and craft item I could want, and then some. Husband and I got a writing journal, nice pens, a couple stretch books, woodless colored pencils, and a couple drawing instruction books. We will definitely be coming here again when we're in the area.

Lia N.

Yelp
Went in for supplies to create a family hanging wall art piece for the living room- as first time painters. Left with children's smocks, easels, canvases to practice on, acrylic and oil paints, paintbrushes, and excitement! We were there until close to closing and a the staff helped us up until we checked out. Excellent customer service: friendly, knowledgable, eager to help. Prices of some items are higher than Amazon.com but for the service, wide selection and a being able to support a local business, we will come back!
