The space is beautiful to say the least. And then there are the cocktails, which are second to none—you can actually taste the devotion to their craft in every sip. They also offer tasting flights so you can taste all their spirits before committing to a cocktail. If you’re into design, the branding is also bang-on. The vodka packaging in particular is one of my favs."

Let's face it, theres always time for a spiced sausage on a bed of fries served with a refreshing beer (local on tap or German imports)."

"The Shop Vancouver, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. The Shop is a fun hodgepodge of motorcycle lifestyle and coffee. You can find clothing, helmets, a small selection of motorcycle parts and espresso all under one roof. What more do you want?"

"The Ramen Butcher, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. Who can hold the title for 'Best Ramen' in a city? The Ramen Butcher certainly fights hard for this record. The Tonkotsu classic is where you start and if you fancy new and interesting flavours then 'GREEN' (Fresh Basil Paste and Parmesan Cheese) or 'ORANGE' (Rich Miso Marinated Ground Pork) amongst others could be for you. An array of sides are also on the menu (karaage, gyoza etc). You be the judge."

"Ovaltine Cafe, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. A staunch favourite by the locals of Strathcona, walking in here is akin to walking back in time. Not much has changed since it opened in 1943 and you can still get a ridiculously cheap breakfast, or a beer if thats your thing."

"Harvest Community Foods, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. Harvest has roots firmly planted in community. The grocery and foods shop began as community project in which a members of the local neighbourhood determined the use of the site. People chose to use the space as a local foods grocery, and dubbed the shop Harvest Community Foods.We are particularly fond of the Udon with Sake Kazu chicken (watercress and shiitake) coming into the colder months."

"Duchesse Vintage, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. Vintage and consignment store that carries a comprehensive selection of every type of garment you could imagine. Also should you be looking to jazz up your next outfit with the perfectly obscure accessory, yes, they probably have that too!"

"Fortune Sound Club, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. If you appreciate sub-bass and just the right amount of treble this is the club for you. Fortune covers the full spectrum of sound any night of the week. What was once the infamous Ming’s Chinese Restaurant is now a revamped space focusing on innovative design, art that can’t be messed with, and eco-friendly features; all of which are brought to life by the most official Funktion One sound system. See you on the dance floor."

"Rennie Collection, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. The Rennie Collection represents one of Canada's largest collections of Contemporary Art. Since 2009, the collection has been on view in the newly renovated Wing Sang Building, Chinatown's oldest building. The small, street level gallery space surprises visitors as it emerges into a cavernous gallery and rooftop sculpture garden. Like any great gallery experience, the architecture is as impressive as the exhibition, which is often developed for the space. Visits are by appointment only and can be reserved through the Rennie Collection website."

"El Kartel, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. Established in 2003 on Robson Street, El Kartel recently opened a new location in Chinatown on East Pender. El Kartel got in the sneaker game fairly early and has remained relevant to this day. Moving to Chinatown has only helped their cause. Expect to find bright colour pallets and loud patterns here."

"Finch's, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. A little off the beaten path and deeper into the residential part of Strathcona, Finch's is a worthwhile coffee and tea house to check out if you're in the neighbourhood. Finch's first started slinging baguette sandwiches over on Homer and Pender in the mid 00s. It quickly became a go to lunch spot for working professionals downtown. If you get anything here, get the Pear baguette. Pear, brie, prosciutto, walnuts, olive oil and a drizzle of gooey balsamic reduction. It's a classic. The Strathcona location also has a retail program with a small selection of produce, dry goods and preserves."

"Matchstick, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. Chinatown/Strathcona was in desperate need of a good coffee spot before these guys showed up. Matchstick typically serve anywhere from 4 to 6 different house roasted coffees at a time. And with their contemporary approach to roasting, you'll find you'll actually be able to taste the difference in each bean. You can go brewed coffee (made to order via Able Kone pour over) or espresso. The house bread with butter or jam is a great start to the day too."

"New Town Bakery, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. New Town Bakery has been serving Chinese and Filipino baked goods since 1980. The steamed BBQ pork buns here are incredible. Grab a number as soon as you come in the door. They work fast so pay attention if you don't want to lose your spot in line. Cash only and beware pickpockets, so we're told."

"Pazzo Chow, Chinatown Strathcona by Post Projects. This place is a hidden gem. Pazzo Chow is a small grotta that stocks fine imported Italian dry goods and preserves as well as serves up a delightful and fresh lunch option. Fresh pasta is available Tuesday through Thursday. Salads and/or paninis on house made focaccia are typical menu items also. Everything is made-to-order and supplies are limited. Get there early if you want fresh food and expect them to be sold out if you're showing up after 4 or 5pm. Back up plan: buy some dried pasta and a jar of their house pasta sauce brand "Sugo Sauce". Oh and don't forget to try the ice cream! Yes. Also house made."

"La Mezcaleria, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. This one is definitely somewhere in my top three places to eat in the neighbourhood. The food is focused on staying authentically Mexican while maintaining a commitment to local and ethically sourced ingredients such as fish. The molcajetes are a particular favourite of mine; traditional stone mortars repurposed to serve fiery hot fillings for tortillas.There is also a dizzying array of different tequilas and mezcals available in curated flights as well as Mexican inspired cocktails. This is my go-to Mexican experience in the city."

"Via Tevere, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. Named after the street in Naples where the owner's passion for pizza began, Via Tevere is a lovely pizzeria that never seems to be lacking a crowd. The main feature of the menu is authentically prepared, thin crust Neapolitan pizza cooked in an instant in a traditional domed wood oven, the focal point of the restaurant. There are also other Italian staples like pasta, antipasti as well as sumptuous desserts though pizza really is the focus here.If you're looking to eat in the restaurant be prepared for a wait during peak times though I've found, if you order pizza to go, you can often get them out faster than you'd get a limp sandwich at Subway."

"Commercial Drive Licorice Parlour, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. Do you ever find you need both licorice and hula hoops but can't stand the hassle of going to separate stores? Well this is the store for you. My friend Dandilion (seen pictured) put me on to this place. They carry over 65 different varieties of imported European licorices as well as other eclectic snacks like cashew milk ice cream inside their cozy seafoam green store.Normally I prefer my businesses to be somewhat more utilitarian, offering a wide, cohesive and curated range of products. But the Licorice Parlour begs to be visited and celebrated for the pure folly of its existence."

"Figaro's Garden, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. I'm a sucker for businesses in otherwise residentially zoned areas, all tucked away and peaceful, waiting for you to stumble upon them during a stroll. Figaro's Garden, one such establishment, caters to everyone from the urban horticulturalist to the casual plant dude that just wants a splash of green on their desk. Their focus is on ecologically sound practices and even offer full educational services like workshops, pest identification, and potting for those of us whose thumbs might be less than green."

"Prado Cafe, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. I had to feature at least two coffee shops as they are a cultural staple of "The Drive" and a big part of how people pass the time. Prado is a place to spend a rainy afternoon (of which there are no shortage in Vancouver) as it has big, open windows with tons of natural light, along with bright decor buttressed by the brick of the building. If you feel like putting some time in on your laptop while constantly distracting yourself with the steady flow of attractive people coming through the door, this is the place the place to do it.Note: impeccable quality of coffee is a given on this list and goes without saying."

"La Grotta del Formaggio, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. This charming old-world deli is typical of Commercial Drive's distinctly Italian flavour. It's got delicious cheeses, both imported and local, cured meats and just about anything you'd want serve up on a rustic slab of wood to your dinner guests.But perhaps what L.G.d.F. is best known for, and creates line ups out their door, is their made to order panini (yes, that's already a plural). Thick stacks of meat, cheese and veggies held together by your choice of bread and always served with a dollop of continental sass from the staff behind the counter (I once asked which cheese had the least fat and got the response I deserved)."

"Grandview Park, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. Ok. Here's the deal. I'm quite fond of Grandview Park but compared to the majesty of other parks in the city it looks a little rough around the edges. The thing is that what Grandview Park lacks in facilitating your communion with nature, it makes up for as a community hub. If Commercial Drive were an Italian town (which it sort of is), Grandview Park would be its piazza, its social focal point where one can lounge on the grass on a hot summer's day, play tennis, stage an anti-gentrification rally, all with views of the city's core.It's also the only place on this list that's ultimately free. Just pick a spot to park your tush, take in the air and enjoy watching vast array of interesting people from many walks of life drift past you."

"Kishimoto, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. I'm generally pretty sceptical when a business claims to be the best at something, especially as brazenly as putting it on the awning of your storefront as is the case with Kishimoto. However, this quaint little gem of a Japanese eatery might just have me convinced otherwise. Everything from here is prepared with the utmost attention to detail from the highest quality ingredients and plated in lavish arrangements. The square shaped nigiri sushi and the matsutake tempura are favourites of mine, as is the grilled mackerel when available.Get there early with your whole party present as the line up can be long and you won't be seated if you don't have everyone there."

"Attic Treasures, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. This furniture store embodies the spirit of Commercial Drive perfectly with its lack of pretense and authentic neighbourhood charm. The pieces here, which on a dry day can be seen spilling onto the street, always feel thoughtfully chosen and filled with soulfulness. The emphasis here is on vintage and mid-century Danish modern with blond teak hues being prominent. There's also an array of eclectic accessories for the home including quirky vases and interesting old books. If I were a person with no personality who wanted to buy one and have it reflect in their living space, I'd definitely buy a lot of pieces from this little treasure."

"Womyn's Ware, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. Tucked away on a quiet corner of the Drive lies this neighbourhood staple. Catering to womyn, myn, or whichever gender one ascribes to, Womyn's Ware has a robust selection of the gear and literature needed to fulfill anyone's sensual desires. And behind the playful exterior, the staff there are very serious about providing merchandise made out of the finest materials and backed by warranties, all in an empowering, sex-positive environment.Stop by to refill on artisanal condoms sometime and see what else tickles your fancy (or other parts)."

"The Stormcrow Tavern, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. Hearken noblemen and women and behold thine local nerd tavern! Got a bat'leth to grind with hum drum sports bars all being the same? Well look no further than this quirky haunt. Every surface in this magical realm is adorned with various paraphernalia from various fictional lore including an imposing Cthulhu head. Sure, there are TVs on but they’re not showing “the game”, only sci-fi,fantasy and horror favourites.The menu options are decidedly mythical as well, evoking what one would order at an inn in a D&D game. But make sure to leave some room on your table for one of the many table top games available to patrons. There’s always something to keep you entertained at The Stormcrow. +15 frivolity"

"Bump n Grind Cafe, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. One of the first things I look for when I go to a coffee shop is what kind of gear they're packing. I feel this is a good indicator of how seriously they take their coffee and what level of product I can expect. With that in mind, Bump n Grind definitely delivers the goods making it one of my favourite places in the city to enjoy coffee for coffee's sake, also one of the few places I know of that still sells the beautifully light bodied coffee made by a clover machine (thanks Starbucks). If you're looking for a quiet place to mellow out with and enjoy a fine brew check this spot out."

"Black Dog Video, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. I get it. The year 1997 called and it would like its neighbourhood recommendation back. Though despite its anachronism, Black Dog has carved a reputation for itself in this counter-culture neighbourhood as a stalwart of the times of yore and boasts a well-curated selection of rare and critically acclaimed films going back to the early days of film making.So unless you're good at futzing around BitTorrent to get that 1950's Italian Neorealistic epic that will impress your Tinder date with your worldliness,I recommend you walk uphill both ways in the snow and rent an optical disk from here."

"St. Augustine’s, Commercial Drive by Asterios Moutsokapas. Vancouver has experienced a sort of beer renaissance (a beeraissance) in recent years with a massive amount of microbreweries opening throughout the city and surrounding areas and unleashing a vast array of different beer varieties for the thirsty consumer to try out. That’s where St. Augustine’s comes in. Named after the patron saint of beer, this tap house boasts over 60 different taps offering a curated and ever changing selection of the area has to offer. Their website even has a live beer menu showing how much of each beer is available!So whether you’d like a hum drum lager or an exciting lambic there’s probably a beer you’d like here. Also, as it has come to be expected in this city, there’s also very delicious food to temper the torrent of alcohol you pour down your gullet."

"Paper Hound Bookshop, Downtown Yaletown by Becki Chan & Milos Begovic. As hand-held electronic devices take over the world, Vancouver thankfully clings onto a used book row. It is located on Pender Street, between Richards and Hamilton, and it is, interestingly enough, expanding. The charming Paper Hound Bookshop is the most recent addition. Its owners claim to carry "all the books that one would expect to find in a classic humanities library, and then a whole bunch of titles that no one is actually looking for". They organize this veritable treasure trove in such delightfully quirky categories as "Things Japanese", "Rodent as Hero", "Detection / Deduction", "Hot Adventure", "Cold Adventure" and "Wet Adventure". A particular type of adventure we love is browsing for books in a physical space. We would like to think that there are still many people around who feel the same, and will greatly appreciate the care put into curating this wonderful little shop."

"JAPADOG, Downtown Yaletown by Becki Chan & Milos Begovic. A Vancouver original, JAPADOG is the Lost in Translation of downtown's lunch scene, as delicious as it is wonderfully quirky. Timeless patterns and cheerful colours brighten up their only Canadian, and one of only 4 North American shops. Marimekko is a happy shopping experience. It features women's wares, house ware, but also shares its premises with Designhouse, a fabulous modern furniture and home accessory shop."

"The Cinematheque, Downtown Yaletown by Becki Chan & Milos Begovic. For decades now, the Cinematheque has been providing Vancouver with a truly uncommon movie-going experience. One would only expect to find a cinema like this in a much bigger city. Their stated purpose is simple and direct - to deliver "essential cinema". The program consists of a wide assortment of curated exhibitions, featuring contemporary films, domestic and foreign, as well as classics and curiosities. The Howe Street premises include a clean and comfortable 200-seat theatre, but also the Film Reference Library and West Coast Film Archive. Cinematheque hosts a number of local film festivals. "Yaletown Brewing Company, Downtown Yaletown by Becki Chan & Milos Begovic. Yaletown's iconic brew pub is still going strong, recently adding a liqour store, micro distillery and a new distillery pub to its flagship pub / restaurant. At the original location, the casual atmosphere is inviting to all, as evidenced by the diverse crowd at all times of day. It is brighter and more open than your typical pub, reliably blasts classic guitar rock, and boasts one of the best patios in town. The beer is great, of course, but so is the food. Featuring a long list of pub faves, including a fantastic chicken schnitzel sandwich, gooey mac and cheese (add the bacon) and a great assortment of pizzas (our picks are the Johnny Mac and grilled shrimp). Sunday lunch is a great deal - $10 thin-crust pizza and $4.50 pint. Can't beat that."

"Twisted Fork Bistro, Downtown Yaletown by Becki Chan & Milos Begovic. This casual and delightful bistro on Granville is a little bit French, but nevertheless decidedly local. Natives of the BC interior, the owners are passionate about home-grown ingredients and spinning them into home-style cooking. It is only open from 8AM to 3PM and sports a healthy queue at weekend brunch hour, but it is well worth the visit. If you sign up for their mailing list, you might sneak into the occasional dinner seating. Wink, wink."

"Osteria Savio Volpe, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. Brand-spanking-new Italian eatery with gorgeous interiors by Ste. Marie. Scheduled to open in early November, the menu boasts fresh pastas and sustainable meats grilled on over their wood fire grill and spit. Their Executive Chef, Mark Perrier, hails from fancy-pants restaurants like Cin-Cin, and has some tricks up his sleeve. Hopefully, those tricks involve gnocchi."

"Bloom Room Botanical Gallery, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. A fantastic new floral shop with a penchant for succulents. The owner, Sarah Spencer Tannahill, was the lead floral designer at Olla Flowers for the past 4 years and has some serious street cred. Beautiful terrariums and lovely casual arrangements with all the luscious must-haves (Peonies, Dahlias, Orchids). NO CARNATIONS."

"The Park, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. A secret gem hidden upstairs. Look for the sign near the Graze entrance. Red-painted picnic tables sprinkled with board games are assembled in front of a large outdoor scene. It kind of feels like a manicured indoor camp-out. Astro-turf carpet, floor pillows, and stump-stools line the back of the space for more casual hangouts. A retired food truck features a rotating menu of standard beach-eats. Feeling fancy? Head downstairs for yummy vegetarian fare at the mother bistro, Graze."

"Batard Boulangerie Cafe Moderne, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. Fresh baked bread, croissants, pain au chocolat, tarts, cakes, and quiche. Did I mention quiche? Fluffy, glorious eggs in a pie with oyster mushrooms, leeks, and magic served with a side salad. Eat in and enjoy a mish-mash of paintings cowering over vintage seating. Their espresso is excellent and they won't look at you sideways for coming in twice in one day."

"Jethro's Fine Grub, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. Call in sick on a week-day or pull your ass out of bed at 8:00am on a weekend. This no-nonsense diner gets line-ups down the block for their full-plate sized pancakes. Really, you should probably share a stack, because the apple streusel crumble cinnamon goo with whipped butter is really, really too much for you on your own.(see Gold Rush on the menu, yowza)."

"The Black Lodge, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. Inspired by David Lynch's Twin Peaks, The Black Lodge is a tiny vegetarian eatery featuring comfort-food and uncomfortable decor. Munch on veggie poutine and slurp back Caribou blood, a special "Canadian" cocktail of red wine, Jack Daniels, and maple syrup. If it doesn't transform you into a lumber-jack vampire, ask for a free bowl of Hawkins Cheezies. That was a lie. You have to buy the cheezies. But they are only $2 a bowl, so cough it up."

"Barbarella Pizza, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. Jane Fonda workout videos aside, this local pizzeria is tight. Their thin crust pizzas are thoughtfully assembled with yummy combos such as il pero (with pears, red onions, honey and balsamic reduction) then baked in a stone oven for extra authenticity. The space is large, open and accommodating, with room for large pizza parties like you used to have in high school, but no one will get gut-rot. Order a few, share with many."

"Instant Shop Theatre, Fraser Kingsway by SAD Mag. Founded by the godfather of Vancouver comedy, Alistar Cook, the Instant Shop is a total front. No really, the shop is just a sham where you can buy t-shirts and play foose-ball. The real goods are in the back where you can take improv classes with other awkward Vancouverites who also think their Tinder profiles are super funny but their punchlines need in-person practice."

"Buro, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Gastown is home to over 20 coffee shops. Buro is one of the newest in the hood with one simple focus: good espresso-based coffee. It’s window-surrounded shop sits right in the cross-section of Water St. and Cordova St. making it the perfect spot for people watching."

"Revel Room, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. There are two important things to know about Gastown on the weekend: 1) It's almost impossible to find a place that will fit you and your buds without a wait, and… 2) Most places close at midnight. When it’s past 10:00pm on a Saturday, try Revel Room. It’s one of the few spots that’s open until 2:00am, there’s almost always room after 10:00, the music is great, they serve delicious food until close, and the drinks are top-notch. And if you make it to last call, you get a cookie. No really, they bake chocolate chip cookies every night and hand them out at last call."

"Alibi Room, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Alibi Room is Gastown’s legendary beer house. With 50 taps of local and imported craft beer that regularly change out, this is a beer drinker’s paradise. This cozy joint plays great music, has great local beer on tap, solid cocktails, and tremendous food. The Truffle Roast Beef sandwich is possibly the best sandwich you’ll eat in Vancouver."

"Timbertrain, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Timbertrain is a small, but very cleverly designed coffee shop on Cordova. They roast their own beans, and have a nice selection of espresso and pour-over coffees, and some great little waffles. And they are ridiculously nice. If you’re here in the summer, get the nitro-poured cold brew. It’s the Guinness of coffee drinks."

"Nelson the Seagull, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Nelson is our regular lunch spot when we feel like eating a little more healthy. They make their own bread, which is the basis for most of their dishes. And it is insanely good. The sandwiches are massive and packed with fresh ingredients, and the 'grilled cheese' is a revelation: melted cheese and tomatoes on toast (pictured). Simple but amazing."

"Six Acres, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Six Acres is a cozy spot in the oldest brick building in Gastown. It also has one of the best people-watching patios in the summer. The drinks are cheap and the beer selection is fantastic. The food is delicious and made for sharing. If you’re looking for poutine, this is the place to go. And don’t miss the adult popcorn. Insider tip: If you have to wait for a table and there's room on the bench by the door, order a drink while you wait."

"East Van Roasters, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. This one's for all you sweet tooths out there. East Van Roasters makes chocolate and coffee right in the shop…and we don't mean they mix a bunch of ingredients together, they go all they way back to the bean and make some of the best chocolate in the city. On top of that, East Van Roasters is a community-run social enterprise that trains and provides employment to marginalized women of the Rainier Hotel program. A hugely important organization in our community. You can feel good eating these treats."

"Wildebeest, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Yes, you should try Wildebeest at night, but we're going to let you in on the true secret of this cozy joint (don’t tell anyone we told you this). Wildebeest is Gastown’s best kept brunch secret. Pay no attention to the rubes lining up for the overrated Catch 22 next door. At Wildebeest, there will almost certainly be available tables on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and it will be one of the best brunches you will ever cram into your gullet. Start with donuts for the table, and ask about the ∞ mimosas."

"Peckinpah, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. If you like meat and bourbon, this is the place for you. Peckinpah is Gastown's answer to Carolina-style barbecue. Prepare to leave with delicious smokey breath and a case of the meat sweats. They claim to have the best wings in town and they might be right. We love the mac n’ cheese with pulled pork on top… make sure you soak that shit with spicy vinegar. Peckinpah also happens to have one of the best people-watching patios in town."

"Tacofino, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Vancouver has an inexplicably high number of Mexican restaurants, and Gastown has a big share of 'em. There are only three worth mentioning in this hood (and only two for the food). Tacofino is the latest offering on the block.It’s really two restaurants in one. The Cordova St. side is a take-out burrito bar. Great if you need a delicious quick-fix. If you want the sit-down Tacofino experience, you’ll want to go around back into the ominous-sounding Blood Alley entrance. Tacos are the star of the show here. Get at least two with an order of nachos or dips for the table. If it's a weekend, get on the list early, then go for a drink around the corner. They'll send you a text when your table is ready."

"Hot Pie Pizza, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Hot Pie is greasy. It’s cheap. It’s one of the few decent pizza-by-the-slice spots in Vancouver. Most importantly, it’s one of the few places that are open past 2:00am. Go here when you need cheap eats… especially when stumbling out after last call."

"Tees.ca, Gastown by Louder Than Ten. Forget the souvenir shops that line Water Street. If you insist on some tourist garb, Tees is the place to go. They have a huge selection of graphical tees from local graphic designers, as well as shirts normally only found online. Tastes range from from cheesy to clever. Simple to flamboyant. Worth a quick stop if you're browsing the hood."

"Heirloom, Granville Island Fairview by Arithmetic Creative. Heirloom Vegetarian Restaurant is the well-loved product of owners, Gus Greer and Yogi Johl’s, personal transition to vegetarianism. Focused on quality of life and the provenance of ingredients, they have created a fine dining experience that is focused on a plant-based menu. Heirloom creates dishes that highlight the intricacies of terroir and seasonality on flavour. Heirloom is a gem in the city, and their best kept secret really isn’t a secret: the atmosphere and design of their heritage space is the perfect place to enjoy an Heirloom Gimlet on a Friday night or a Kale Refresher juice on a Sunday morning. These two have a way of making you feel like family. Their cheery dispositions and eagerness to swap travel stories is half the reason this shop is loved by locals. The other half is their vast selection of tea that is a direct result of customer preference and suggestion. Located on Fisherman’s Wharf, just off of Granville Island, they walk all of their seafood fresh and direct from the fisherman a few steps away - their menu is absolutely ocean to mouth. Though this small and hidden stand is an anomaly - their legendary popularity is completely based on word-of-mouth - they are pioneers of a number of trends, their stand is a shipping container, they were at the forefront of Oceanwise, and are arguably responsible for perfecting tempura batter. The fish and chips are incomparable, but the tuna burger with wasabi aioli and ponzu is incredible. Best part is your meal is served by a bunch of hooligans."

Liberty Distillery is obsessed with the details: authentic and beautiful hand-carved 19th century front and back bars adorn the space, the wild-grown indigenous British Columbia rosehips for their Endeavour Origins Gin hand-picked from the owner’s 97 year old grandmother’s backyard, their copper stills handmade in Germany, and all of their spirits truly craft-distilled - all BC-grown grains fermented and distilled in-house. Honouring the traditions of a true craft process means that Liberty spirits are not only pure in taste and quality, but gluten and sugar free. Soup is not the only thing that they are known for, whether it’s the strawberry balsamic sauce or holiday staples, like gluten-free gravy or fresh cranberry sauce, their kitchen is an extension of your home cooked meal."

"Lee's Doughnuts, Granville Island Fairview by Arithmetic Creative. Others have tried to copy and steal their recipes and techniques time and time again, but Lee’s Donuts has never been matched. One of the originals on Granville Island, this wonderful family-run shop is one of Vancouver’s best places, period. Peek into the shop window early in the morning to watch 33-year veteran, Alvin, hand roll, cut, and dip every donut. They cannot count the infinite amount of donuts they have made since 1979 because each batch is made-to-order; and it’s never been about the numbers, but about doing it well. Regulars know the daily schedule and buy out the day’s first batch of donuts, freshly glazed, before they have even left the cooling racks. The classic honey-glazed is without compare."

"Grouse Grind, North Vancouver by Sara Morison. Described as Mother Nature's Stairmaster or the North Shore's "Stairway to Heaven", the Grind has been keeping Vancouverites fit and challenged tourists with its grueling 2.9 km (1.8 mi) ascent up Grouse Mountain. Amidst beautiful old growth trees, the trip up 2,830 steps is arduous but oh so rewarding as you reach the peak and the incredible views of the city and beyond. Don't forget proper shoes and water, and there's a tram for the downward trip!"

A perfect stop for picnic fare or a delicious in-house cappuccino and late morning brunch with friends."

"Louis Gervais Bistro, North Vancouver by Sara Morison. Under the culinary expertise and warm humour of Louis Gervais, this inspired French bistro and catering business has made its home on the North Shore since 1998! "The Teahouse Restaurant, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. Nestled within Stanley Park is this gem of a restaurant. With two beautiful dining rooms and a small lounge, all with spectacular ocean views, the Teahouse is the perfect spot for a weekend family brunch or a dinner date. Everything I’ve had from this Pacific North West influenced menu has been great, but I specifically (and highly) recommend both the Lobster Eggs Benedict and the Chef’s Burger (both pictured)."

"Nook Restaurant, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. When you want something done right, you do it yourself; that’s essentially the story of how this rustic, family-style, Southern Italian restaurant was started. Since 2009 Nook has been a staple in the casual dining scene in Vancouver, and a go-to spot for delicious pizza, pasta, cocktails, and wine. I like sitting at the bar and checking out the rest of the room; I also like (no wait—love) the Salami Pizza, the Burrata and Prosciutto plate, and an Aperol Spritz to wash it all down."

"España Restaurant, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. A beacon of a restaurant and bar, España offers up authentic Spanish tapas made with local, seasonal, and mostly organic ingredients, as well as a handsome line up of Spanish wines, beers, and spirits. The intimate and dimly-lit room is the perfect stop before or after a night out. Try the Padrón Peppers, Grilled Octopus (pictured), and Patatas Bravas. Try it all really; you can’t go wrong here."

"The Blind Sparrow Gastrotavern, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. A new addition to the neighbourhood, the Blind Sparrow offers a bounty of rotating local beers, local (Okanagan) wines, and delicious gourmet bar snacks. There’s a good cocktail list too (try the Escobar) and weekend brunches. In better weather you can sit at the patio and do some quality people-watching, though the nicely lit room inside is a good option for that too."

"Chocolate Mousse, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. When you’re looking for a specific household product—no matter how obscure—you can be sure that Chocolate Mousse has it, along with about a thousand other things you didn’t know you needed. For 30 years, this neighbourhood miniature department store has been providing West Enders with well-priced good taste."

"Greenhorn Espresso Bar, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. Greenhorn is one of those places that transcend labels. It’s a café and a restaurant and a gallery and a record shop (and at one point a bike shop). But, labels aside, it is a neighbourhood staple and home to the West End’s best cup of coffee. The Eggs Benny is fantastic, as is the Wild Mushroom Baguette (pictured). The record selection too is on point."

"Marutama Ra-men, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. You always remember your first, right? Well, Marutama is where I finally understood “Umami,” and I will never forget that. This funky, jazzy, 3 year old, Japanese-run noodle house is, hands-down, the best ramen in the city. I keep wanting to try other menu items, but I can’t bring myself to not order the Ultimate Richly-Textured Cloudy Chicken Soup (pictured). Add a Yaki Cha Shu (grilled pork belly—also pictured) if you’re extra hungry; you’ll be glad you did."

"Production Road, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. Originally a work space for a couple of design friends, then a retail space, and now a showroom/pop-up shop (without regular hours) for locally designed textiles, prints, patterns, handmade tote bags, and pillows. Gift shopping is easy here! But you can also skip over to Lemonni’s Etsy store for more."

"Damso Modern Kitchen, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. For five years, Damso has been fusing traditional Korean recipes with modern cooking techniques and Western food. The result is menu of perfectly prepared dishes (sous-vide) that will sate any appetite. My favourites are the Stone Bowl Beef Bibimbop and the Korean Taco (both pictured)."

"Adesso Bistro, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. Tucked away in a quiet and obscure corner of the West End, Adesso Bistro offers some of the city’s warmest service and best home-cooked food. With a focus on north-western Italian cuisine, you will find plenty of delicious seafood (get the Frito Misto di Mari to start). My favourite dish on the menu, however, is a red wine braised beef—Brasato di Manzo. The patio in the summer is an absolute delight, and with $6 martinis from Sunday to Thursday, this place is well worth the visit."

"Stanley Park Pitch and Putt, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. This lush and scenic 18-hole course is a perfect way to spend a few sunny hours (particularly during the week as it is far less busy). The front and back nine start at the entrance of the course so you can go for a short or full game without much of a schlepp. It’s open year-round, though club rentals and course maintenance are only available in the spring and summer months."

"Aqua Bus, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. If/when you’ve had enough West End, a scenic, quick, and cheap way to go to other parts of the city is by boat. The Aqua Bus runs every 5 minutes and connects the West End to Granville Island, Yaletown, and Olympic Village. You can even take your bicycle aboard."

"Transylvanian Traditions Bakery, West End Stanley Park by Amer Alkhatib. This place may be tiny, but what it loses in size it makes up for in quality. I love unsweet sweets; and this European dessert shop has come up with just the right proportions for a nice variety of delicious Romanian and Hungarian cakes. Everything is made in-house and from scratch. Their specialty is a Hungarian BBQed sweet bread aptly named the Chimney Cake (pictured); it’s fantastic! The 36 year old bar attracts and celebrates people from all walks of life. The view is great, the music often on point, and the sunken circular bar is the icing on the cake. The only thing that could make this place better (more novel) is bringing back the table-top telephones they once had."
