Always changing their décor and keeping it fresh, this local place is the preferred hang out for business meetings, lunch with friends, drinks after work and dinner with the kids. If you are lucky enough to be around for Melbourne Cup this place is always pumping for the race that stops the nation. Lots of high heels, miniskirts and fascinators. Make sure you get there before the main race; things don’t look that pretty afterwards…"

Murray Rose Pool (Redleaf Pool)

Public swimming pool · New South Wales

"Redleaf Beach, Double Bay by CoMa. Probably one of the best hidden jewels in this area is Readleaf Beach (more recently known as Murray Rose Pool) - a favourite amongst locals but usually missed by the general public. Hidden down the steps, behind the Woollahra Council Chambers, this Sydney harbourside beach has views to Darling Point and the harbour bridge. Feeding their loyal customers for breakfast, lunch and dinner since September 1958 and still run by the same family, the restaurant was the first to offer alfresco dining experience to Sydney and the first espresso coffee machine to the eastern suburbs. Our favourite dishes? Veal schnitzel with creamed spinach and the chicken noodle matzo ball soup."

Cafe · Marrickville

"Illi Hill, Marrickville by The Laser Co. A-top the hill on Illawarra road, Illi Hill is a well put together cafe. Ethically source meats, and a wide range of vego and vegan options feature on the menu, and you get to sit in the Bentwood Thonet chairs that were used on the Great Gatsby set - how posh is that?"

The Henson

Pub · Marrickville

"The Henson, Marrickville by The Laser Co. This poshed up locals pup has captured the young inner-west hipster family market perfectly - a large play paradise for the little ones even includes a ball pool...if only adults were allowed in. That said, for those of you without children, if you avoid Saturday and Sunday afternoons you will dodge the kiddy crowds for the most part and be left to enjoy the lovely season menu and the good selection of craft beers is relative peace."

The salt and pepper tofu is crunchy and comes with a generous smattering of chilli and shallots - a must order dish. Definitely worth a visit."

Decked out in a quirky classic Italian style, with some tables and a roomy bench seat so that you can watch the world go by whilst enjoying some sweet stuff."

314 Illawarra Rd

Marrickville

"Cornersmith Cafe & Picklery, Marrickville by The Laser Co. Family run, community supporting, ethical and delicious. This is one of my favourite places to eat and one of my favourite businesses all round. The menu is completely seasonal and seriously good, and they trade for backyard produce from local residents to make their pickles with. When we visited they were on the lookout for 'plums, chillies and tomatoes'. Our home garden consists of one dead peace lilly so we generally make do with paying for our brunch.Make sure you also check out The Cornersmith Picklery - an open kitchen that makes pickles & mustards, sells to the public and runs classes. 441 Illawarra Rd Marrickville 2204 - definitely worth a visit."

On top of all this, they run The Bread & Butter Project (a social enterprise bakery) and they have more than earned the right to be called a sustainable business."

"Johnny Lobster, Neutral Bay Kirribilli Crows Nest by Born & Raised. This place has it all; slick branding, mouth-watering food and a great vibe. All sustainably caught seafood, these guys know what they are doing when it comes to making mean sandwiches. Picture whole lobster tails smothered in dill fronds, folded with chunks of potato and salty pancetta ensconced in a perfectly baked roll. "Sven's Viking Pizza, Neutral Bay Kirribilli Crows Nest by Born & Raised. Imagine a world where all your favourite take-out cuisines come smashing together to create a take-out God. We’re talking kebab ingredients on a pizza, with sauce that tastes a bit like a Big Mac special sauce relative. Sounds weird, tastes ridiculously good. This Swedish-inspired joint has some of the best pizza’s we’ve ever tasted, with incredibly unique topping combinations, thin crusts, and just the right sauce ratio. All the pizzas are named after pagan Gods and the one with kebab meat and lettuce is a must."

"Bourke Street Bakery, Neutral Bay Kirribilli Crows Nest by Born & Raised. A Surry Hills institution, Bourke Street Bakery has ventured north to serve their delicious treats all day long. The space itself is small and industrial-cool, with outdoor tables to enjoy the sun. The pork and fennel sausage roll is life-changing, but then so is pretty much everything else on the chalkboard. Pies, pastries, quiches and tasty sandwiches will all stare you down and tease you to branch out beyond your coffee order, which is also of a high standard. And if you want a fresh loaf of artisan-style bread, there’s plenty to choose from."

SoCal Sydney

Californian restaurant · Neutral Bay

"SoCal, Neutral Bay Kirribilli Crows Nest by Born & Raised. From the street you’d easily miss it, but head up the narrow stairs and you’ll be greeted by a little slice of Californian paradise, with welcoming staff, a huge bar, and a sun-trap of a courtyard that’s the perfect place for a cheeky tequila and delicious tapas-style eats. The fish tacos, beef sliders and chicken wings are great to share, and if you feel like something a little more sophisticated, the menu has something for everyone. The vibe outside is beachy and bright, or head inside and enjoy the cosier vibe with comfy seats and concrete floors. This place really kicks off at night too."

San Antonio Sourdough Bakery

Bakery · Kirribilli

"San Antonio Sourdough Bakery, Neutral Bay Kirribilli Crows Nest by Born & Raised. The minimal decor of this little bakery places focus on the freshly baked bread which is piled high in the window. Grab a coffee and pastry or a sandwich and have a seat outdoors for the perfect people-watching vantage point."

Glider Cafe

Cafe · Potts Point

"Glider, Potts Point by Squad Ink. This place is incapable of anything less than exceptional. Glider serves up an outstanding ‘Single Origin Roasters’ coffee, a fresh and flavoursome thai menu and a warm welcome every time you step through the door. Monopole

Modern European restaurant · Sydney

"Monopole, Potts Point by Squad Ink. You’ll have to take extra care when trying to find this place, it’s barely visible to the naked eye. Monopole is a wine-bar-meets-restaurant on Macleay street owned by two Sydney lads with a leading reputation in the industry. The wine list is outstanding, although somewhat overwhelming, but don’t be shy about asking for help from laid back staff who are super knowledgeable. Aside from the wine, the share plates are a hit. Nice lighting, easy going service and fantastic booze. What more could you want? Photography: Monopole."

Dumpling and Noodle House

Dumpling restaurant · Potts Point

"Dumpling and Noodle House, Potts Point by Squad Ink. This hole-in-the-wall dumpling house has some seriously good, seriously cheap dumplings. Seating is limited with about eight tables inside and just one or two outside. The owner is always a friendly face and even though it’s small, you’ll not feel like you’re being rushed. The pan fried crispy dumplings are firm favourite with the steamed dumplings coming in a close second."

Embarkation Park

Park · Potts Point

"Embarkation Park, Potts Point by Squad Ink. Sporting killer views across Woolloomooloo and the Sydney Skyline (including the opera house and bridge) this spot is a hidden gem. It’s never too crowded and is perfect for a picnic or sunset stroll. Bring your dog or your badminton set and settle in on one of the many well kept lawns. The park closes just after sunset, but you can exit after dark through a one-way gate, so make sure you stay and soak in every ounce of that glorious Sydney sunset."

The Butler

Restaurant · Potts Point

"Butler, Potts Point by Squad Ink. The high ceilings, lofty tropical interior and stunning views over the Sydney Skyline make The Butler a true Potts Point oasis. Whether you’re after a Sunday afternoon jug of Pimms or an intimate dinner, this spot will not disappoint. The menu has subtle French-Caribbean influences and the drinks menu is extensive. Give the beef and sliced pork sliders a go and try to get a table on the covered terrace so you can take in the view. Photography: The Butler."

The Roosevelt

Cocktail bar · Potts Point

"The Roosevelt, Potts Point by Squad Ink. The Roosevelt is an upscale 1950’s New York inspired cocktail bar and restaurant. Perfect for a cosy pre-dinner drink, make sure you give ‘The Continental’ cocktail a try."

Cho Cho San

Modern izakaya restaurants · Potts Point

"Cho Cho San, Potts Point by Squad Ink. Cho Cho San is a Modern Japanese Izakaya nestled in the ‘Paris end’ of Macleay Street. The award winning interior is a blend of Japanese style and white-washed Nordic simplicity and the menu is a creative and delicious assortment of Japanese fusion dishes designed to share. Try the pork kastu steamed bun and finish off with a green tea soft-serve ice-cream. This is one of those meals you’ll be reminiscing about for months."

Harajuku Gyoza Potts Point

Permanently Closed

"Harajuku Gyoza, Potts Point by Squad Ink. Expect a loud greeting as you enter this buzzing, kitschy decorated Japanese restaurant. Their specialties are izakaya-style gyoza and beer. Grab a seat at the bar and watch the chefs in action or grab a table if you’re a group. For something a little out of the ordinary, try their dessert gyoza and cider slushies. Yes, cider slushies. Photography: Harajuku Gyoza."

Room Ten

Cafe · Potts Point

"Room10, Potts Point by Squad Ink. Tucked down a laneway with only a small tile indicating you’re in the right place, once found Room10 is hard to forget. This tiny, backroom-chic café is a temple to coffee, serving the locally roasted Mecca and Dark Horse blends as their signatures. The menu is broader than you’d expect and offers simple and delicious Australian inspired food. Seating here is limited, but if you’re lucky enough, nab a table outdoors and watch the eclectic Potts Point crowd pass you by."

The Fish Shop

Permanently Closed

"The Fish Shop, Potts Point by Squad Ink. What we have here is an upmarket fish & chips shop drawing inspiration from the white-washed seaside towns of the American north-east coast. The atmosphere is buzzing at the frount, but more intimate at the back. The fish is fresh, locally caught and well prepared. There’s also a good choice of Australian wines from organic to natural and bio-dynamic - the house rosé is a must! Photography: Merivale."

Caffè Roma

Italian restaurant · Potts Point

"Caffe Roma, Potts Point by Squad Ink. Sydney doesn’t offer many places where you can eat great food late into the night. Thankfully Potts Point has Caffe’ Roma, a true landmark that’s been around for over 25 years. Famous for its authentic Italian cuisine and relaxed service, here you could be sitting next to celebrities, politicians, artists, poets and anyone else who prefers to eat after hours. 34 Llankelly Pl

Potts Point

"Bang Tang, Potts Point by Squad Ink. In a colourful laneway connecting Potts Point to Kings Cross lies a little understated favourite. Bang Tang is a hole-in-the-wall style Thai/Asian eatery with quick, affordable and deliciously authentic meals. Bring your own wine and take a seat in the outdoor area where you’ll be greeted by friendly staff. The food is fantastic for the price so it’s hardly surprising Bang Tang is such a popular spot. Photography: Bang Tang."

Fratelli Paradiso

Italian restaurant · Potts Point

"Fratelli Paradiso, Potts Point by Squad Ink. The neighbourhood’s busiest Italian restaurant, Fratelli Paradiso merges classic flavours with contemporary flare. The food is reasonably priced and the menu changes weekly, but their famous fiorentina steak is a staple. The wines are all excellent and fairly pricey. Sitting outside on a warm Sydney evening is the best, but weekend brunch is also a must. Our final word on Fratelli is the service, which is always outstanding."

Quarrymans Hotel

Pub · Pyrmont

"Quarryman’s Hotel, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Do you like beer? Well step on in and sit right down. The Quarryman’s offers 20 different craft beers on tap at any one time. And, apart from a few regulars, they change beer like they change underwear, so don’t get too attached. They also have a pretty decent food menu. We recommend the Chicken Katsu Burger and the Paternoster Reuben."

Peg Leg Tavern Pyrmont

Permanently Closed

"Peg Leg, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Step a board me hearties, if ye be adventurous. This pirate themed bar is a great change of pace from the usual ho hum bar experiences. The interiors look like a pirate ship, for Pete’s sake, and the cocktails are ridiculous tasty. Plus, they have an extensive rum and gin library, so if you want it chances are they’ve got it. They also do a nitrogen cold brew coffee. We don’t know what it is, but we definitely want to try it. As far as cocktails go, try the Pyrmont Cobbler - a light and refreshing drink, for a hot summers day."

Culture at Work

Research institute · Pyrmont

"Culture At Work, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Set in a beautiful old Victorian style cottage, Culture At Work blends art and science into the perfect balance of visual and cognitive stimuli. It features the work of many established and emerging artists. They also have an artist in residency program. A must for any creatively minded individual in the area."

Gourmandise de Paris

Permanently Closed

"Gourmandise De Paris, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Do you like crepes? We do. And Gourmandise De Paris is the place to get them. It’s an authentically French café on Harris Street that makes a delicious crepe. We especially love the crème de marron or chestnut jam, which is a uniquely French treat - a rare find down under. The café also offers a range of savoury dishes that you would expect from a French place, baguettes, omelettes and Charcuterie plates."

harris.miller

Cafe · Pyrmont

"Harris Miller, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. From the Gucci café in Rome to the back street bars of Sicily, Harris Miller is a blend of up market fashion and raw and rustic elements that create a beautiful place to relax, coffee in hand. Charismatic owner Chadwah has put his heart and soul into this place, hand picking and finessing everything on display. Within two seconds of meeting him you’ll realise he really cares about his customers. Try one of his signature deserts, but be warned, they’re not for the faint hearted."

Australian National Maritime Museum

Maritime museum · Sydney

"National Maritime Museum, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Take time out to explore one of Pyrmont’s star attractions and learn some interesting nautical themed facts along the way. The museum itself is impressive, with thousands of maritime artifacts. However the real draw card is taking a tour aboard the Navy submarine or destroyer that are both docked just in front of the museum."

Obunmee

Vietnamese restaurant · Pyrmont

"Obunmee, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. One of the most popular eateries on the Harris Street strip, Obunmee is not your average Vietnamese Bahn Mi shop. Featuring a range of classic inspired Viet dishes, with a modern twist, Obunmee is a delicious place to stop in for a quick and tasty bite to eat. Vegetarians should check out the ‘Vegetarian Delight’ Bahn Mi for a surprising take on an old favourite."

Parchment Coffee Traders

Permanently Closed

"Parchment Coffee Traders, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. This is definitely the place to go if you’re serious about coffee. The owner, Phillip, knows a thing or two. He roasts his own beans to make a perfectly balanced espresso. Accompanied with a chilled sparkling water it’s heaven. Parchment Coffee Traders is a great little place to enjoy a quick coffee on the way to work, or a place to relax with friends over a damn fine brew."

Pirrama Park

Park · Pyrmont

"Pirrama Park, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Pyrmont’s waterfront features several beautifully landscaped parks and walkways, but this one takes the cake and for good reason. The Australian institute of Landscape Architecture awarded Pirrama Park for it’s stunning design and when you see it, you’ll see why. It’s a local favourite for lunch with a view, or getting the heart rate up with a bit of exercise. You can run along the foreshore or join a fitness class on the grass. It also has a great picnic and BBQ area, as well as a playground for kids. And, if you’re brave enough, you can dip your toes in the ocean pool."

Lord Wolseley Hotel

Pub · Ultimo

"The Lord Wolseley Hotel, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Where do we start with this gem? Great beer, amazing food and they sell their own t-shirts. Sick! The Lord Wolseley has been around a while - since 1881 in fact. It was a favourite hangout of the local letterpress printers from the NSW Government Printing Office, and still is today. The food they serve at the “Pub Life Kitchen” is out of this world good. Their specialty is burgers, but why stop there, treat yourself to some sticky hot wings and you won’t be disappointed."

The Star Sydney

Restaurant · Pyrmont

"The Star, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Whether you love or hate it, there’s no denying the array of food, entertainment, shopping, including plenty of high-end fashion stores on offer at the Star. We love grabbing delicious dumplings at Din Tai Fung, or treating ourselves to a ‘Zonut’ at Adriano Zumbo’s shop. Did we mention that the famous gelato place Messina is there too? Yep, a gelato so delicious it could bring about world peace. Get one! It’s another place that’s great for just people watching, and it’s one of the only places in Sydney you can avoid the lockout laws and get boozy all night long."

Urban Oasis

Permanently Closed

"Urban Oasis, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Last minute gifters take note of Urban Oasis. It’s your one stop shop for design inspired gifts and home wares for when those special occasions roll around. They have a great range of nick-nacky products, from scented candles to fashion forward clothing and jewelry. There is also a range of man-inspired items to please the most discerning gent."

Ministry Of Coffee.

Cafe · Pyrmont

"Bar Anonimo, Pyrmont by Thinkbone. Keep your eyes peeled, or you might miss this one. Bar Anonimo is as its name suggests, quite anonymous. The unassuming front entrance expands into a modern dining area, cleverly designed to maximise space. It’s a local favourite for its delicious coffee and food. When you’re eating the avocado and tomato bruschetta with fresh ricotta, you think to yourself, “How is this so delicious?” It’s warm, genuine and friendly, without being too overfamiliar. You’ll always feel at home here. We recommend the granola for take away, the bruschetta for eating in and for lunch, check the specials board. We had a delicious smoked duck salad."

"Seasonal Concepts, Redfern by lowercase. This store is truly one of a kind. Combining floristry and antique homewares, it's a treasure trove of visual candy. There's an eclectic mix of homewares, jewellery and furniture, with most dating back pre-1950's. Baz Luhrmann even sourced props for his remake of The Great Gatsby. And be careful, you could get lost in here for hours."

Redfern Continental

Permanently Closed

"Redfern Continental, Redfern by lowercase. European style cuisine in the heart of Redfern. Offering up breakfast, lunch and dinner, you could park yourself here all day if you fancy. Fit-out wise... the front section is light and airy with a definite European flavour to it, however take a walk out back and you'll find yourself in the cocktail bar known as GDR, which feels like a different venue all together, with its sleazy retro vibes. With delicious food, an extensive cocktail list and a good selection of beer and wine, no one's complaining here."

House of Crabs

Permanently Closed

"House Of Crabs, Redfern by lowercase. House of Crabs is a hip Louisiana inspired seafood boil, that lives upstairs at The Norfolk. Mess is encouraged here, so perhaps skip this one if you're scouting for suitable first date venues. When it comes to the food, it's serious biz. Tables come lines in butchers paper and bibs and surgical gloves are provided on arrival. All non seafood menu options can be are best pushed aside, cos let's be honest you're here to demolish some serious amounts of crab, right? The crabs come served in 500g bags, and are drowned in a sauce of your choice- creole butter, Cajun (our pick), garlic pepper, Singapore and lemon pepper. We're not going to lie, it's a messy affair but that's half the fun. Photography- House Of Crabs website."

Norfolk House & Hotel

Pub · Redfern

"The Norfolk, Redfern by lowercase. The Norfolk is the all-rounder every neighborhood needs. It's a good honest pub with plenty of personality and we're proud to call it our local. Yeah, it's a little rough around the edges, but that's half its charm. There's a good selection of beers on tap and American cans are also well represented. Food wise, the menu has a Mexican theme to it, but it still delivers on all your go-to pub grub. If you feel like a snack, try the the chilli fries and for something a little more substantial, you can't go wrong with any of the tacos or burgers. It's a little naughty, but their fried chicken burger is a definite stand out for us."

Breadfern Bakery

Bakery · Redfern

"Breadfern, Redfern by lowercase. With a genius name like Breadfern, you'd expect it to be good, right? And thankfully it doesn't fail to deliver. They do all your bakery favs and more, plus a decent coffee. The chirpy staff and funky fit-out give make the space feel warm and inviting. Most of the benches and shelving are from recycled timber and you can either sit and chill on the seats outside or takeaway and enjoy some people watching in the park across the street. Hot tip: if you're craving something of the pastry variety, make sure you get in early as most of the good stuff is out the door by 1pm."

Scout's Honour

Permanently Closed

"Scout's Honour, Redfern by lowercase. Scout's Honour is basically as cute as the name suggests. Bright and cosy on the inside, chirpy staff and a whole heap of greenery scattered throughout. Breakfast and lunch is their thing and don't they do it well. Their breaky roll is second to none, and they also pour a mean coffee. But where they really make a name for themselves is their signature sandwiches. Can't go wrong with the beef brisket with zucchini pickles."

Three Williams

Cafe · Redfern

"Three Williams, Redfern by lowercase. Being conveniently located next door to the studio, we've really lucked out with this one. Great coffee, tasty food and relatively wallet friendly. Big ticks all round! These guys serve all your go-to breakfast and lunch staples, but the real star of the show is their signature Narnies, which are a different take on the humble sandwich and come wrapped in homemade flatbread (think Indian Naan). There's a trio of fillings to choose from, but the pick of the bunch is the duck narnie."

Cake Wines

Permanently Closed

"Cake Wines, Redfern by lowercase. Redfern's very own cellar door. Housed in a restored warehouse on Everleigh St, they serve up their full range of wines, along with a selection of locally brewed beers, spirits and ciders. The menu is simple, with pizzas, cured meats and cheeses being the food of choice. They're big supporters of local music scene, so live music is a regular fixture for Friday and Saturday nights. Photography- Cake Wines website."

Porteño

Argentinian restaurant · Surry Hills

"Porteño, Surry Hills by For the People. Food of the Buenos Aires locals displaced to Sydney, this Argentinean grill is hearty and super authentic. Vegetarians need not apply if they don't want to be surrounded by char-grilled, melt-in-your-mouth, 12-hour roasted delicious meat. The vibe is a throwback to a the kind of South America that only the locals talk of - the seating area housed in an indoor courtyard of tiled floors, cowhide furniture and pictures of Eva Peron. Book if you have a big group or turn up and hope for the best."

NOMAD

Australian restaurant · Surry Hills

"Nomad, Surry Hills by For the People. Nomad has a great logo (just saying). Ok that's the design review out of the way.A place to impress, they serve up a Middle Eastern-influenced set of deliciousness, in a sleek exposed brick, high ceiling, concrete floored warehouse at the hands of Head Chef Nathan Stasi (from Heston Blumenthal's Dinner in London).Owned by Rebecca Littlemore and Al Yazbek, the place has a focus on 'house made' with as much as possible of their menu produced on site. They have a huge array of pickled, fermented cured, and smoked ingredients that all end up on your plate. The entire menu is designed to share, so don't go solo and randomly rock up, even if the name might suggest it.Booze has a local focus – all Australian wines and local craft beers. The 65$ a head set menu is a good option if you want to sample all the things."

Surly's American Tavern

American restaurant · Darlinghurst

"Surly's, Surry Hills by For the People. Just off Campbell St, Surly's is the bar for when you come to Sydney but wish you'd made a stop-over in Texas first. Grab a seat at the rock-n-roll diner meets sports-bar, order a cold Coors beer with some fried chicken and/or chilli cheese fries, sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. Despite a completely American appearance, expect the best of Australian sports on the big screens and the best of Australian culture in the seats (just the right amount o' rowdy). Cheers."

The Rover

Cocktail bar · Surry Hills

"Wild Rover, Surry Hills by For the People. Just off Campbell Street you'll find The Wild Rover - yes that's the right address, no we're not joking, yes that's actually the entrance to a bar.The Rover is a bar that welcomes you in as though you were a regular, despite being 90-95% sure you've never been there before. It's dimly lit, the right amount of brooding, and the kind of place you can imagine a Private Investigator would ask his clients to meet with him/her so as not to draw attention. The bartenders are (without exaggerating) probably the friendliest in Sydney, and they'll have a great new drink suggestion for you upon each visit.Best to head over on a Thursday or Friday night (when it's a little quieter) and snatch up one of the booths - mainly because you'll want to work your way through the entire cocktail list and this is a feat best attempted sitting down.Easily one of the best bars in Surry Hills and Sydney, but first you've got to find it."

Brett Whiteley Studio

Temporarily Closed

"Brett Whiteley Studio, Surry Hills by For the People. There’s nothing quite like seeing a great artist in the midst of their process.Unfortunately, legendary Australian artist Brett Whiteley passed away in 1992, so nobody will ever again see him work with a brush. But you can see the next best thing. The Art Gallery of NSW has maintained Brett’s studio (and home) in Surry Hills, and it’s now a museum and gallery dedicated to his life and work. But it’s also a document of his process, with the studio littered his unfinished paintings, art equipment and reference books. and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images. So yes, seeing his art up close is great – but the real joy is examining the artefacts of creativity strewn about, giving you a chance to get forensic and deconstruct the genesis of the art on display.Artworks © Wendy WhiteleyPhoto: AGNSW"

Reuben Hills

Cafe · Surry Hills

"Reuben Hills, Surry Hills by For the People. Reuben Hills is kind of everything that’s both so wrong and so right with Surry Hills, distilled down into the purest of forms. The coffee tastes exceptional… but to get it, you’re probably going to have to deal with a man-bunned barista who has no time for ignorance of bean origins.Whatever food you order will undoubtedly be a big pile of delicious, exotic ingredients… laid out for visual impact, not ease-of-consumption.The fit-out is reminiscent of that semi-secret New York coffee shop you'll find in a back alley in Manhattan. A garage converted into a clean, homely cafe with industrial touches.Basically, if you love horn-rimmed glasses, you’ll love Reuben Hills."

Forrester's

Restaurant · Surry Hills

"Forresters, Surry Hills by For the People. For us, the Forresters (at the top of Foveaux and cnr of Riley street) is the epitome of 'Surry Hills pub'. As a team we like to order a beer and a chicken schnitzel, grab a seat on one of the benches out front, sit there and silently judge the people walking in/out of the high end brothel across the street. Sound slightly uncivilised? Because it is. But that's the whole point. The Forresters isn't spruiking artisanal goats pee or kale infused caramel slice - it's just a great pub, with good beer/cider and good food. Mucho refreshing."

Chur Burger

This is no regular, run-of-the-mill burger 'joint'.Chur burger is an experience, some have called it a way of life.Once you've sampled the Chicken burger with it's mayo and slaw, or the Lamb with feta and mint sauce - you too will be a convertee to the Chur.Don't waste any more time, jog there right now if you have to."

Gelato Messina Surry Hills

Ice cream shop · Surry Hills

"Gelato Messina, Surry Hills by For the People. It’s the best gelato in Australia. It’s got a relaxed, milk-bar vibes as well as a vast array of staple, classic flavours. They also have new, crazy, mind-bendingly delicious concoctions every few weeks (such as, sage & burnt butter, chilli peanut satay, and pavlova, just to name a few). What else are we supposed to say? Stop reading this right now, go to Messina, and cram as much gelato as you can manage into your gaping maw."

104 Fitzroy St

Surry Hills

"Cafe Con Leche, Surry Hills by For the People. If you've been watching Narcos on Netflix lately, then you might be interested in an authentic taste of Colombia. Welcome to Cafe con Leche. Consisting of a few tables and a couple of seats inside and out, jovial owner Joaquin and some friendly staffers give the place some heart, and make the authentic South Amercian dishes that much more enjoyable. The arepas are the real deal – ask for the choclo arepas if they have any left. If you want the best stuff, its not on the menu - more of an under the counter deal bizarrely. Be sure to order the authentic Colombian dish, ajiaco (a thick chicken and potato soup that comes with capers and avocado). Ciao."

The Stables

Permanently Closed

"The Stables, Surry Hills by For the People. For when you're walking down Bourke Street and realise you're hungry, poorly dressed and in need of a coffee - all at the same time. The Stables is a small complex that combines a cafe/restaurant down back, with a designer fashion store up front. The coffee is great, the pastries from Luxe Bakery are lifechanging, and the sandwiches & salads for lunch sell fast. The whole concept is great fun, even if the clothes are a little more expensive than your cappuccino."

City Edge Cafe

Cafe · Surry Hills

"City Edge, Surry Hills by For the People. Walking past City Edge you might mistake it for a convenience store if there wasn't always a crowd of people eagerly waiting in line out front. It's the kind of small sandwich shop that feels like it became hugely successful over night by accident. You could liken it to the Soup kitchen from Seinfield - except the staff are too damn lovely. The set menu is great, but we recommend going for whatever is on the specials board on the day (you won't be disappointed)."

Single O Surry Hills

Coffee shop · Surry Hills

"Single Origin Roasters, Surry Hills by For the People. Surry Hills has a long list of specialty coffee places but this might just at the top. Single Origin roast their own beans to a truly crave-worthy deliciousness that keeps a loyal following of locals and out-of-towners alike coming back for more. Their hole in the wall no-nonsense approach for their coffee bar is always busy, while the passionate baristas are uber friendly yet have no time for your skim milk blasphemy.A small cafe, carefully style with industrial charm, is attached on the corner and serves delicious breakfasts and lunch that feels fancy without breaking the budget. (Well, for Surry Hills that is). Take home a bag of their Resevoir Blend or just admit that you can't do it like the experts and come back the next day."

Published Art

Permanently Closed

"Published Art, Surry Hills by For the People. Look, we all love bookshops, right? But the few that are left can be a bit… quaint. Anachronistic. Not Published Art, though. It’s like stepping into an alternate dimension where bookshops embraced modernity. It has a clean, open, minimalist aesthetic. It only ever has the latest titles in stock, rather than stockpiling old (and irrelevant) material. And it has a laser sharp focus on the types of books it specialises in – design, architecture, art, fashion, typography and photography.Essentially, it’s a design bookshop designed for designers by designers. You’re going to want to have your credit card handy."
