On the Grid : Monopole

"You’ll have to take extra care when trying to find this place, it’s barely visible to the naked eye. Monopole is a wine-bar-meets-restaurant on Macleay street owned by two Sydney lads with a leading reputation in the industry. The wine list is outstanding, although somewhat overwhelming, but don’t be shy about asking for help from laid back staff who are super knowledgeable. Aside from the wine, the share plates are a hit. Nice lighting, easy going service and fantastic booze. What more could you want? Photography: Monopole." - Squad Ink

"A wine bar with excellent eats Sydney is only just getting into the wine-bar-with-fantastic-food thing, but so far it's doing it extremely well. The new digs of sommelier and local wine expert Nick Hildebrandt and chef Brent Savage (the pair also own the more serious Bentley Bar) has been decked out by designer Pascale Gomes McNabb. It is dark and elegant; a beautiful, long, stool-lined counter runs from bar to kitchen, and the walls are lined with bottles from the 500-strong, leaning-towards-natural list. You can drop in for a glass of wine (the place has just won a best wine list award for 2014), but I'd recommend making the most of this wine-and-dine bar. A house-cured beef pastrami, made from beef tongue, is curled on a finger-length spelt crouton with pillowy goat's curd and pickle. Calamari is served with a black sausage puree and fresh broad beans."

21 Best Bars in Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"If ever there were a bar to impress your most sophisticated globetrotting friend, Monopole would be it. The sexy European-style wine bar goes all in on atmosphere with a gleaming black bar, slivers of gray metal hanging from the high ceilings, and dark, rich woods. And although the cocktails are decent, what you're really here for is the award-winning wine list: that's 500 rare and boutique bottles from around the globe hand-picked by co-owner (and one of Australia's most renowned sommeliers) Nick Hildebrandt. The bites coming out of the kitchen are likewise excellent." - Kris Fordham, Laura Dannen Redman

Ah monopole, we did the full course menu. Hats off to the staff, they were friendly and very accomodating with a great smile. My friend doesnt eat pork and the chef happily changed it to fish which was delicious and pretty awesome. The butter in my opinion isnt good. Somethings a miss. Maybe isnt french enough. And the finale, dry aged duck. Felt like Ive tasted this somewhere before. Another restaurant’s specialty. Duck and orange menus are quite overrated. The meat was cooked really perfectly though. With all of that, Id say 4 stars!

Best food I've had in Sydney! Excellent service too! And a very romantic setting! Esp. Right in the middle of the Sydney CBD too!

We enjoyed a lovely dinner with a small group on a weeknight. The restaurant is small and divided into a couple of little spaces so it felt intimate and quiet - perfect for catching up! We got the $90 set menu which include 4 courses served family style. The staff were accommodating to a few dietary requirements which were served seamlessly with the rest of the meal. Our favorite dishes were the pate, and the duck. The Calvados cake dessert was delicious!

Situated in the side streets of the CBD, Monopole is a great French restaurant to try. The menu isn’t large, but what is on there is yummy and full of flavour. There was 4 of us so we got to try a number of dishes which included the Duck Liver Parfait, Pork Croquette, Faux-Fillet de Boeuf which was cooked perfectly. The highlights were Vol-au-vent de Poulet et Crustacé, which is quite large, full of flavour and can easily be a main along with Boudin Blanc de Homard which was my favourite dish, the Marron sausage was so light and just delicious. The service was friendly and helpful. The wine list extensive and some really great cocktails to try. There were a number of regulars so you can tell they must be doing something right. We will definitely be back.

The food was amazing and unique and it really stands out from other Bistro style of restaurants nowadays. We ordered 2 bottles of French Grenache recommended by the staff and they were amazing! Service was very good as well. I hope more people know about this place it’s just right next to Ryan bar.
