Chippendale Restorations

Stephen and his team did a fantastic job restoring one of our fireplaces and removing another. Incredible to find one company that can bring together multiple trades and restoration expertise for such a niche job. The gas unit which was installed heats the house without any issues and is a great feature, retaining the original heritage aesthetic while creating a practical source of warmth through winter. Highly recommend Chippendale restorations for their level of professionalism and expertise.

We used Chippendale Restorations to install two fireplaces and various period features (lighting, doors, windows) when we renovated our 1915 cottage in 2012. Nearly 10 years later, everything is still in ship shape - Steve serviced my fireplaces last week which I should get many more years from before I have to replace any parts. They have the best fireplace selection and service we found, and loads of additional products which keeps us going back.

What a strange experience I had here, and it's a shame because its a beautiful, unique store. Whilst I was browsing a man called out behind his desk asking if I needed help. I replied "when you're ready yes, no rush". He replied "I take that as you are ok then". I replied, "just when you are free I'd like some help please". From the moment he offered assistance he had a very arrogant attitude and came across as a condescending, but I chose to ignore it. His manner is very sarcastic and passive aggressive. I was aiming to replace locks and door handles, but instead of giving me simple recommendations, his answers seemed to be very complex and far from simple. I spent roughly 20 minutes with him, and whenever I would answer one of his questions, he would respond in a very sarcastic patronising manner. I continued to ignore it as I was on a mission. At one point he asked me which way the doors opened, and I replied "both outwards like french doors", he replied "ok calm down". I had no idea what he meant by that and I thought to myself surely he didn't say that, so again I ignored it. His answers were never "yes or no or I recommended this", he would go in circles. I said to him "this is harder than I thought!" he replied again rudely "it's not that hard". In the end I felt like I wasn't really getting any help so I thanked him and said, also I hear you offer fireplace restorations, I have an old Victorian home and they need to be looked at, do you offer this service? He replied "it depends", I waited for him to continue but no, this man is so rude. I said, "I'm not sure how this works, is it best I send photos or do you offer a call out, please tell me the process". He seemed totally uninterested and told me "it's not a yes or no answer". I gave up, I said ok thanks, I can email some photos and by this point I seemed offended. He continued, "well it's not a black and white answer, don't you agree?" he was smiling, as though he enjoyed trying to stir me up, it was totally bizarre. I thanked him again and walked away, he calls out "I'm not knocking you, I hope we haven't lost you as a customer", still smiling. Like others have said in their reviews, misogyny is still alive in this store.

Hard to overdo the feedback for Stephen and his team that did our fireplaces. 3 fireplaces built as part of a much bigger renovation. The pictures don't do them justice. The guys from Chippendale all coped with our inevitable last minute changes and shifting time lines and still did a truly special job on time. I think the best compliments we've received have been from the other trades that came in and out of our house and observed the quality of the job and pointed out the little details that we werent even aware of. A job done properly, on time and on budget. Couldnt be happier!!

I can't recommend Stephen and his team more highly, It was always going to be tricky to fit a any sort of fireplace/fire into our tiny little terrace but they took the challenge up enthusiastically and did a brilliant job. Stephen's depth of knowledge and patience was absolutely amazing. We very much appreciated it and we're thrilled with the outcome. Thank you!

Stephen Peters has been a wonderful help as we transitioned from a wood-fired fireplace to gas. The gas conversion he did for us is simply wonderful. It looks and feels like the real deal, but I don't need to trek to the service station to buy wood, I don't need to chop wood, I don't need to store wood and there's absolutely no smoke. Just hit the button and there's instant warmth and coziness.

Amazing place, Robert and Jeremy are both amazing men, heaps of knowledge on antique architectural restoration material. Comes highly recommended.

Fantastic second hand and vintage building supply store. The have a huge warehouse full of used doors, windows, fireplaces and lamps as well as hardware for light switches, handles etc. they also have patterned old glass which is absolutely beautiful! A renovators dream!!!

If you own a old home and need to restore or want to restore it back to its formal glory, you will find yourself here one day. They have a massive warehouse full of everything from reclaimed door frames, fireplaces, fittings, lights, hardware pretty much everything you need new or reclaimed. Staff here are super friendly and I have come here a few times to buy different things at different points in time. They will give you advise, suggest products and also make some things to order. Love this treasure trove and I could spend a day browsing through their selection of things for an old house be it heritage, Edwardian, Victorian etc. One of my favourite DIY shops in Sydney.
