LeKoke Wine and Bites
Permanently Closed
"LeKoke, Little Havana by Colada Collective. If you blink you might just miss one of the most hidden gems of Little Havana. A cozy, non-pretentious, vintage wine bar sitting calmly at the edge of the neighborhood. Dimly lit and covered in wine bottles, this place will transform your night. Whether it's an intimate date night or a group of family and friends enjoying tapas, this venue will leave you talking till the end of the night. This family-run establishment has a great assortment of spanish tapas including favorites such as "Laurita Toston”, a flattened plantain adorned with fresh shrimp and “The Pulpo”, a nicely grilled tapas-style octopus dish. Definitely save room for "Grandma's Flan"—a sweet bite unlike any other flan in Miami."

"Lung Yai, Little Havana by Colada Collective. An incredible authentic location for Thai tapas. A bar set-up with flavorful, mouth-watering delicacies to share. The chefs make you feel like you are at their homes for family dinner. It is adorned with a minimalist interior and a laid-back side yard covered in string lights. Favorites include The Crispy Duck Salad and Shrimp Spring Rolls. Pay particular attention to the Northern Thai dishes—a delicacy rarely found in most Thai restaurants. Chef Bas is electric and charismatic. Be forewarned—if you catch a beer with him you might just stay the entire night, happily forgetting any other plans you might have had."
Versailles Cuban Bakery
Bakery · West Flagler
"Versailles, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Whenever there's any socio-political event taking place in Miami related to Cuba (especially rumors of Castro's death) people converge upon Versailles. Whether it's protesting topics on the street with signs or over a café at "La Ventanita" (The Window), Versailles is the city's soap box where people voice their political opinions. I visit "La Ventanita" regularly to people watch and listen to discussions—but most importantly—to have the best "Cortadito" in Miami. When you arrive, ask for a Cortadito in a "tasa" (ceramic cup) with "leche evaporada" (evaporated milk). Other notable menu items include Croquetas and Pastelitos de Guayaba. If your stomach fancies larger portions, walk over to the restaurant and enjoy one of the many, classic cuban dishes. In the movie "Chef", it is here that Jon Favreau gains inspiration for his Cuban Sandwich. If you're still not satisfied, be sure to visit the bakery where you can get a plethora of goods to take back to your family and friends."
Los Pinarenos, Fruteria
Fruit and vegetable store · Little Havana
"Los Pinareños Fruteria, Little Havana by Colada Collective. An eclectic, open-air fruit stand filled with classic Miami staples like mangos, mameys, guanabanas, and coconuts. The occasional street roosters will welcome you as you order a fresh "Batido" smoothie. Here you can mix and match an array of fruits and veggies or just tell one of the brothers who run the spot what you're in the mood for and they'll whip up a custom batch just for you. From the bar, a star beverage is the "Green Juice", which is made with real sugarcane. The cash only destination also has great food to enjoy, including the tamale, a mini Cuban Sandwich and the homemade tuna. Top off your meal with a Café Cubano made by the lady of the house for an authentic, grandma flare. The excitement continues out back where you'll find fruit trees growing, flocks of chickens, and even the store's mascot, Tuco The Pig."
MDC's Tower Theater Miami
Movie theater · Little Havana
"Tower Theater, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Proudly standing in the heart of Little Havana, The Tower Theater is one of Miami's oldest cultural landmarks. When it opened in December of 1926, it was the finest state-of-the-art theater in the South. The theater was named one of the top 10 theaters in America by USA Today. Today, Tower is one of the best places in the city to watch independent and foreign films as well as a multitude of lectures and exhibitions. Concession prices are fair compared to the outrageousness of some of today's other multiplexes. Sneak yourself away from the music and people that populate Calle Ocho and retreat to a time when watching films was an event."
Taqueria Viva Mexico
Mexican restaurant · Coral Gate
"Taqueria Viva MĂ©xico, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Authentic Mexican, no fuss, cash only, tacos! Viva MĂ©xico offers an assortment of authentic, $2 tacos. Like most simple and successful taco joints, it's the preparation that goes on behind-the-scenes that makes this little spot key. The carnitas are cooked over a low heat for hours, becoming moist and tender. Get started with the Campechanos, then proceed to getting adventurous with ear, stomach, tongue, shoulder, and rind. Wash it all down with a Jarrito and continue your exploration."
La Camaronera Seafood Joint and Fish Market
Seafood restaurant · West Little Havana
"La Camaronera, Little Havana by Colada Collective. The family-owned, cash-only fish house has been in Miami for years and continues to be on the top of their game. Don't fix what isn't broke they say—authentic Cuban seafood flavors is all you'll get from this locale. Having just recently acquired tables, the fresh fish market is a "stand-up" hit during lunchtime hours. This real Cuban fish-fry has a steady, ongoing supply of fresh seafood. I'm a big fan of go-to classics like shrimp empanadas and their signature "Pan Con Minuta" sandwich."
Miami Smokers- Urban Smokehouse
Permanently Closed
"Miami Smokers, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Bacon. These guys really love it and you will too. Miami Smokers is more than a shop—it's a team on a mission to bring timeless curing and smoking techniques to Miami consumers, one slice of bacon at a time. They pretty much make and distribute all the top bacon for every fancy restaurant in Miami, so skip the middle man and go straight to the source! Besides flawless charcuterie, the small shop exudes a lovely ambience, characterized by its rustic artwork and extremely friendly service. Every person I bring here always returns on their own with two more people. Order a beer and a sandwich and don't forget to grab some candied bacon on your way out."
Hoy Como Ayer
Night club · West Little Havana
"Hoy Como Ayer, Little Havana by Colada Collective. A nostalgic, tropical club in the heart of Little Havana, Hoy Como Ayer is an intimate space with an energetic pulse that flows under low ceilings, dim lights, and photo portraits of Latin stars. Weeknight events are highlighted by what many locals consider to be the best night in Miami—dancing to the afro-cuban rhythms of The Spam Allstars. Recently, Hoy has experienced a slight reconfiguration where the dance floor scaled down, making way for a larger seating/performance section. Nevertheless, come midnight, it's guaranteed that people will be dancing on their chairs."
El Rey De Las Fritas
Cuban restaurant · Little Havana
"El Rey de las Fritas, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Cuban fast-food made with love and soul. Rey's has some of the best fritas, batidos, and fresh juices in the entire city. A "Frita"—or a traditional Cuban hamburger—is made from a mix of seasoned ground beef and chorizo, covered in onions and potato sticks and served on Cuban bread. Mix and match ingredients to add a unique twist to your burger. My personal favorite is the "Caballo" which simply adds a fried egg and a hint of hot sauce. Their menu consists of other great sandwiches, including the "Pan Con Bistec" (heralded as one of Miami's best) as well as the "Croqueta Preparada"."
LoanDepot Park
Stadium · Riverside Community
"Marlins Park, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Sitting atop the historic site of the Miami Orange Bowl and marred by a public funding fiasco, Marlins Park is no stranger to controversy. Nevertheless, the new 37,000-seat, retractable roof facility has been a godsend in preserving Major League Baseball in South Florida. The artful new home of the Miami Marlins boasts luxurious amenities and magnificent views of the Miami skyline. Take a mid-inning break to tour the stadium in search of various public art pieces by world-renowned artists and be sure to stop by Taste of Miami—a locally-inspired culinary experience rivaled by few around baseball."

Cuban restaurant · Little Havana
"El Cristo, Little Havana by Colada Collective. This simple, family-style restaurant offers an enormous selection of traditional Cuban dishes. Every Cuban dish imaginable is on the menu. Arrive before 11:00am and enjoy the best Cuban breakfast in the area. For lunch or dinner, try the "Vaca Frita De Pollo"—a garlic-marinated chicken breast, fried and pulled over moros and sweet plantains. Portions are sizable so be prepared to share or take home leftovers for the following day. Like all cuban meals, be sure to finish it off with a Café Cubano. Sit outside and catch the hustle of the locals."
Domino Park
Park · Little Havana
"Domino Park, Little Havana by Colada Collective. "Doble nueve", "puntilla", y "pollona". All are random Cuban domino phrases you may hear as you stroll into this magical little park full of locals partaking in their pastime. The destination is constantly crowded with players from sunrise to sunset, all of whom are warm and welcoming. A consistent laughter can be heard from the winning teams. Still, even though tourists flock to see them—come game time—their motives revolve solely on focus and concentration. You may find that many of the older residents that inhabit this cultural venue are some of the most lively, young-spirited locals you'll meet."
Cubaocho Museum & Performing Arts Center
Art museum · Little Havana
"Cuba Ocho Museum and Performing Arts Center, Little Havana by Colada Collective. Cuba Ocho is Little Havana's gumbo stew—it has a little bit of everything mixed in to create its own flavor. The venue wears many hats—operating as a gallery and cultural center throughout the day, and transforming into an energetic bar/lounge at night. Ownership has a vast collection Cuba's history told in the form of art and texts. Their beautifully adorned bar includes an extensive collection of rum. On any given night, you may wander into a large, outdoor drum circle or find yourself enjoying one of their stand-up comedy acts."
Ball & Chain
Live music venue · Little Havana
"Ball and Chain, Little Havana by Colada Collective. A resurrected jazz bar from the 30's where legends Billie Holiday and Chet Baker would party all night. The high beam wooden pillars, giant leaf ceiling fans, and patterned tiles give you a nice, classic, Florida vibe as you arrive. Great selections of snacks and cocktails keep you fueled as you dance inside by the central bar and neighboring booths. Stroll through the crowd, Rum and Coke in hand, towards the outside and continue the party by the band shell. Although most people come for the nighttime attractions, the open, daytime setting provides a refreshing vantage point of Calle Ocho. Take in the pedestrian traffic while calmly sipping your "Mojito Criollo" cocktail to the sounds of live Cuban jazz."
Azucar Ice Cream - Little Havana
Ice cream shop · Little Havana
"Azucar, Little Havana by Colada Collective. In the famous, charismatic words of Celia Cruz, "Azucar!" Just like Celia, this small ice cream wonder has taken the neighborhood and the city of Miami by storm. The small, colorful shop has become a tradition for Miami locals in a short period of time. Quickly, the Azucar team has broadened its reach beyond the confines of the small parlor. It now services and distributes its unique array of ice cream flavors to a number of locations around the city. The venue is virtually impossible to go unnoticed, with its two-story ice cream cone facade and neon sign. Try a simple but bold mix of Vanilla with a shot of Cuban coffee or venture a bit further with an Avocado and Platano Maduro mix. If you can't decide, go with the fan-favorite, "Abuela Maria®"— a blend of guava, cream cheese and crumbled Maria crackers mixed into ice cream."
Bay of Pigs Museum & Library
Museum · Little Havana
"Bay of Pigs Museum, Little Havana by Colada Collective. This small museum/library is filled with authentic artifacts from the Bay of Pigs invasion. Forget an audio tour—the best part of this facility is the staff—actual surviving soldiers you can speak to directly for a unique, detailed point-of-view of the invasion and the events that transpired. The museum also serves as a Veteran's hub, offering an opportunity to speak to different soldiers with each subsequent visit."
The Classic Motor Company
Permanently Closed
"The Classic Motor Company, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. The Classic Motor Company might just be the stuff that dreams are made of. The dealer specializes in immaculately restored "modern classics" (think 1960's Mercedes Benz Pagodas, 1970's BMW 2002 Turbos, Corvette Stingrays, the list goes on...) As if that wasn't enough, they also run two restoration companies - one specializing in Porsche 911s (The 911 Company) and the other in cult-classic vintage Toyota FJ Land Cruisers (The FJ Company). As of now they show cars by appointment and online, but later in 2016 you'll be able to gaze at these beauties at their new 10,000sf showroom across the street."
"Little River Cooperative, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Muriel Olivares and Tiffany Noé are arguably the grand dames of urban agriculture in Miami. The duo operate a garden, farm, and nursery (the latter of which is located in Little River), as well as create and tend to private and restaurant gardens throughout Miami. The sites are open by appointment only, with the exception of programs and seasonal seedling sales held at the nursery (a must-attend for anyone attempting their own garden in the unique agricultural climate of South Florida.) For those wishing to sample Little River Cooperative's 40 varieties of organically-grown vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers year-round, a CSA program is offered. You can also find the duo at the Upper East Side Farmer's Market every Saturday selling their own fare, as well as Zak The Baker bread, pasture-raised eggs, and plants. Curious about the fruit trees in your (or your neighbor's) back yard? Pick up a copy of "Forager", co-authored by Noé and published by Miami's own Jai Alai Books."

Vanity Projects Miami
Nail salon · Miami Fashion District
"Vanity Projects, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. New York City's best nail art salon opened their Little River outpost in 2015, and the manicures of Miami girls have never been the same. The salon's concept is truly rooted in art - owner Rita Alcenar de Pinto's background as an independent curator informs the video art installations projected onto the walls, while the salon operates a "residency" for visiting nail artists from NYC to Tokyo. The nail artists (don't call them manicurists) can translate your favorite artist's work (Jen Stark was an Art Basel 2015 favorite), or help you develop a custom design. Not feeling creative? Don't worry, no one will turn a nose up at a good old fashioned single-color gloss."
The Cathedral of Saint Mary
Catholic cathedral · Little Haiti
"St. Mary's Cathedral, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Originally established in 1929 under the name "Little River Mission Club", St. Mary's is Miami's only cathedral and serves as the mother church for Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe Counties. Now led by Father Christopher Marino, St. Mary's offers three individual masses each Sunday - one each in English, Spanish, and Kreyòl - serving as a reflection of the diversity of the Little River neighborhood. For those looking to experience the church outside of services, St. Mary's also offers non-denominational programming such as its "Cathedral Arts Series"."

"Barkhaus, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Barkhaus isn't your regular doggy day care and boarding facility. "Pack leaders" Natalie Sanchez and Andres Monasterios have a unique way with dogs, and it shows (most notably via their Instagram account, which has nearly 60,000 followers and growing.) The two care for and train dogs in their 12,000sf private dog park, complete with above-ground dog pool and "Barkhaus Beach". Abiding by the philosophy that "a tired dog is a happy dog", they also take structured pack walks - sometimes up to 30 at a time. Barkhaus books up quickly and has many "haus regulars", so be sure to e-mail them well in advance to secure a place for your pooch."
Breadn Pan Cafeteria
Cuban restaurant · Miami
"Bread 'n Pan, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Don't try to search this place on Google Maps - you won't find it. You also won't find a website, and if they have a phone they're not giving out the number. Keep an eye out amongst a sea of industrial warehouses for the yellow awning and open storefront. Once you've found it, you've found one of the best Cuban coffee joints in town. The bread pudding is mom's recipe, and all of the pastelitos, empanadas, bread, and cake is baked in the back. Once you choose your sweet of choice, order a cortadito (our favorite), colada, or cafe con leche, and you'll be in caffeinated heaven. The snack packs of Oreos, Ritz Crackers, and Doritos in the glass display? Not so much. Wouldn't want to ruin your buzz."
B & M Market
Jamaican restaurant · Little River
"B&M Market, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Don't let this light-less, bare-bones bodega fool you - in the back they're cooking up some of the best Guyanese and West Indian fare north of the Caribbean. Jerk chicken, ackee and salt fish, and curry goat are all available, but roti is the name of this game. Available in chicken, goat, vegetable, and seafood variations, they all pair well with the homemade hot sauce (dispensed in salad dressing containers.) Grab a Ting from the fridge to ease the burn and some tamarind candies for a post-lunch treat, and you're all set."

A 2015 move to Little River saw an expansion of the space to include an outdoor courtyard for sculpture, performances, and events. Bakery Boys offers dishes such as stewed goat, chicken, and fish (head on), all of which come with a side of rice and pigeon peas and a small salad. Portions are very large, and prices are cheap - nearly everything is sold between three and eight dollars. Make sure you're planning to take your lunch somewhere to-go - the boys only do takeout."

"Limited Edition Caffé & Vino Buono, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Don't bother telling friends to meet you at Limited Edition - they won't know where you're referring to. Instead, direct them to "the coffee shop at Ironside", as the name "Limited Edition" is almost nowhere to be seen. This "rustic meets industrial" indoor/outdoor cafe at the Ironside complex offers coffee, tea, and a small selection of cold-pressed juices, as well as a variety of pastries, sandwiches, and salads. The wifi is free and the atmosphere is lovely, making Limited Edition a great place to go when you want to take your work out of the office. Beware - the café closes around 4pm, so if you crave your caffeine fix in the late afternoon, you're out of luck."
MADE at The Citadel

"MADE at the Citadel, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. MADE (Makers, Artists, Designers, Entrepreneurs) is the area's first (and, of this writing, only) co-working space. Housed in the former Bell South building, MADE's two stories include private offices, shared workspace, and a theater. No worries, other recurring MADE classes include guided meditation and a professional insights lecture series."
Ironside Pizza
Pizza restaurant · Little River
"Ironside Pizza, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. On NE 4th Court, a strip of warehouses sit at the easternmost border of Little River. Walk to the other side of the street and you'll find yourself in Palm Grove, a historically-designated residential neighborhood. Among the warehouses and facing Palm Grove sits Ironside, a multi-use complex of shops, studios, and offices, along with a restaurant - Ironside Pizza. Ironside Pizza specializes in (you guessed it) pizza - in this case, of the Neopolitan, wood-fired variety. Also on offer are a variety of antipasti and salads. Pro tips: order the eggplant parmesan, involtini, and pack your favorite wine or beer, as this place is one of the few BYOB's in Miami."
Earth 'n' Us Farm
Farmstay · Little River
"Earth 'n Us Farm, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Earth'n Us farm was established by Ray Chasser in 1977 as a place for he and his family to live close to the earth. Four decades later, the two acre farm not only still exists, but is thriving. Part hippie commune, part farm featuring gardens and animals, Earth 'n Us is open to the public, and encourages visitors on Sundays. Additionally, ENUF hosts "Love & Vegetables" (a vegan pop-up cafe) and drum circles to celebrate and honor the full moon. For those wanting an even more personal experience, the farm isn't totally cut off from the market economy - you can rent one of several of their spaces by the night via Air BnB."

"Bill Brady Gallery, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. Bill Brady has never been one to follow the crowd - over the last 20 years he's owned galleries in NYC's East Village (ATM Gallery), the West Bottoms of Kansas City, and now, Miami's Little River. Motivated more by energy and intuition than the trends of the art market, he's given many of today's prominent contemporary artists their first gallery shows, including Japanese neo-expressionist Tomoo Gokita. Each visit to Bill Brady Gallery results a wildly different experience, from Gokita's large-scale, black and white acrylic paintings, to an interactive musical sculpture composed of buckets from Nick Farhi."

While &gallery presents work of all sizes, the intimacy of the space lends itself particularly well to interacting with smaller pieces - the type experience often lost in cavernous gallery environments."
McArthur Dairy
Dairy supplier · Miami
"McArthur Dairy, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. If you want to an easy way to identify Miami natives, just sing the jingle, "We all grew up on McArthur". Those born and raised here will be the ones wearing instant smiles. In Miami, anyone of a certain age truly did grow up on McArthur - it's been a dominant force in the market since its founding in 1929 by J. Neville McArthur. In the early 1950's, McArthur built the dairy plant, the most modern in the country at the time. The 1950's were a particularly good for McArthur - along with his new facility he had the largest single dairy herd in the world, and demonstrated his local pride and commitment to his community with a $1 million donation to the University of Miami (the equivalent of over $10 million in 2016.) While visitors can't enter the building (it is, after all, an operating dairy processing plant), it's worth a drive-by on the 2nd Avenue side for a glimpse at the well-preserved Miami Modern (MiMo) architecture alone."

"Mindy Solomon Gallery, Little River by Matthew Vander Werff & Ashley Melisse Abess. After four years in St. Petersburg, FL and another two in Wynwood, Mindy Solomon Gallery now calls Little River home. She represents a roster of contemporary emerging and mid-career American (Scot Southern) and international (de la Torre brothers, Kang Hyo Lee) artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, and video, and encourages them to establish their creative voices and explore a broad range of exhibition possibilities."

Wolfgang's Steakhouse
Permanently Closed
"Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, Miami River. This chain is best known for their dry-aged steaks and wine, but if you sit at the bar there’s an abbreviated menu that serves healthy portions for $8 before 7PM and $12 after. The two sliders are big enough for you to share with a buddy and they come with a side of shoestring fries. The caesar salad’s great too but order the german potatoes that are seared in a skillet with bacon and cheese if you’re really hungry."
