Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers
Book store · Linden Hills
"Wild Rumpus, Linden Hills. Far before I lived in Linden Hills, over 20 years ago my mom would drive me across town just to visit Wild Rumpus, the "animal bookshop". "Zumbro Cafe, Linden Hills. Zumbro’s website says they’re legendary and what’s great, is that they actually are. Well lit, family friendly, cheery and always busy. It’s the kind of place where you show up at work on Monday, mention having brunch there over the weekend and everyone’s like “Oooh did you have the pancakes or eggs benny?” It’s just a known thing. Peppers & Fries
Sports bar · Cooper
"Peppers & Fries, Longfellow by Paper Bicycle. Burgers and burritos together at last. This baseball-themed grill has a hearty offering of craft beers, burgers made-to-order and spicy burritos as thick as the bicep on your pitching arm. The decor is clever: a life-sized scoreboard, a chain-link room divider, and the classic little baskets cradling your food "like a glove." Enjoy a beer with a group of friends in bull-pen themed room in the back and get the play by play from one of many T.V.s tuned to the game. Peppers and Fries also sports a large, sunny outdoor patio where you can enjoy your meal underneath one of their huge umbrellas. Record store · Cooper
"Hymie's Vintage Records, Longfellow by Paper Bicycle. If Irene, the Boston terrier, isn't the first to greet you, you'll be sure to get a warm welcome and a friendly smile from the staff at Hymie's. Riverview Theater
Movie theater · Howe
"Riverview Theater, Longfellow by Paper Bicycle. It is easy to imagine the old archeologist, Howard Carter, cracking the doors of a hermetically sealed Riverview Theater and peering in... Someone behind him asks if he can see anything... and he replies "Yes, wonderful things."As you step past the box office, you're transported back in time to the era of terrazzo floors and tiled wall decor. The Riverview is not only the area's best place to catch a movie on the cheap, but an experience it itself. There is an old-style refreshments counter, and a single viewing theater which sits behind the lovingly kept 1950's era lobby. It's one of the best places to get a feel of the neighborhood culture, and an even better place to see any number of well-loved 80's films, classics, and films from eras long past, along with a slightly-later viewing of today's blockbuster line-up."

Dogwood Coffee - East Lake

The staff are warm and genuine people, the goods prepared with care, and the space has an honest minimalism that allows a visitor to feel like they're part of what makes this coffeehouse special. Some of the best moments here can be on grey mornings, when the light filters through the windows-- all the way back to the back of the space. There are little two-person booths along the wall outfitted with charming industrial bendable lamps-- making them the perfect nooks to play a quick game of cards with a friend, or to re-immerse yourself in the book you've been meaning to pick back up. And when you're by yourself and in need of a bit of sincerity and a great cappuccino, you can always count on your interactions with the staff to remind you of how much personality can be in the quickest of gestures."

The space has a laid back nouveau-hippie vibe and plenty of assorted seating along the mural-covered outer walls and a huge table made from a beautiful lacquered cross-section of a tree. Hi-Lo Diner
American restaurant · Cooper
"Hi-Lo Diner, Longfellow by Paper Bicycle. Mom's open-faced turkey sandwich never tasted so good. Hi-Lo Diner's brand-new-yet-vintage aesthetic is welcoming and palpably nostalgic -- with their blue vinyl booths and a long, stainless steel bar-top that spans the length of the 1957 diner-car. The façade of this new Longfellow greasy-spoon made its journey to Minneapolis from it's original home in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. These days it beacons the masses to enjoy an ice-cream cocktail or a taste of their house specialty, a "Hi-Top," one of a number of savory or sweet pairings balanced atop a donut-like puff of bread. Definitely a place to take your date for late-night breakfast and drinks among the buzz of those killer neon lights."

Gandhi Mahal Restaurant
Indian restaurant · Seward
"Gandhi Mahal, Longfellow by Paper Bicycle. Jewel tones, brass decor, and the bold fragrances of chilies and curry add to the cozy ambiance at Gandhi Mahal. Though one would already be thoroughly appreciative of the bounteous heaps of traditional Northern-style Bangladeshi Indian family recipes on their lunchtime buffet, a person may be surprised to know that many of the ingredients, though exotic in flavor, come right from the neighborhood Longfellow community gardens and a lush aquaponic greenhouse on-site. Ruhel, the owner, is enthusiastic about the future and what it means for the sustainability of the restaurant and beyond and has no shortage of innovative ways to introduce them to the menu."

"The Foundry Home Goods, North Loop by Krisna MacDonald. Nestled on the quiet corner of 1st St and 2nd Ave, this small boutique is an emporium filled with carefully curated goods that can upgrade nearly any room in your home or give you some serious gifting cred. Step inside and you'll see this little shop masterfully uses up every square inch of its space as its stocked nearly to the ceiling with everything from modern ceramics to natural cleaning supplies. And if you're lucky, you might just walk in on the day the owner brings in all of her baby goats from her goat farm outside of the city. Yes, baby goats."

"Smack Shack, North Loop by Krisna MacDonald. What do mac and cheese, guacamole, and corn dogs all have in common? At Smack Shack, the answer would be they all have lobster in them. And if crustaceans or seafood aren't your thing, their menu has many sandwiches, salads, soups and a full bar that are still worth the visit."

"Black Coffee and Waffle Bar, St Anthony Park by Studio On Fire. What once was Muddscuckers Coffee Shop is now a waffle destination. Yes, you read that correctly: a waffle destination. The only thing more plentiful than the waffle choices is the number of different seating areas to choose from (the long banquette, tables in the side room, at the coffee bar, the long high table by the window). Uptown Tattoo
Tattoo shop · Whittier
"Uptown Tattoo, Whittier by Light Grey Art Lab. Rumor has it that the artists from Uptown Tattoo received their talent from a sly pact with the Dark One. If that sounds dubious, then how it's possible that that much skill can be housed in one space? Uptown Tattoo is an incredible place to meet face to face with some of Minneapolis's most talented draftsmen. Metal plays in the background, and the red walls are covered with detailed drawings of mythological creatures, angels and beasts. The work here is all custom, and the waiting list for some artists is relatively long, but the talent here overfloweth, and is definitely worth the wait."
