Calvary United Methodist Church
Methodist church · Allegheny
"Calvary United Methodist Church, North Side. Because of the amount of steel wealth in Pittsburgh at the turn of the century, it’s been said there's more Tiffany windows in area churches and mansions than most cities of its size. A stunning example can be found at the Calvary United Methodist Church. There are three main installations here depicting biblical scenes — two 30-foot sanctuary windows are among Tiffany’s largest, and a third that was the most costly stained glass commission of its time by the studio. A recent restoration removed more than 100 years of mill dirt from all of the windows. The building itself is a magnificent tribute to the great cathedrals of Europe -- Gothic architecture complete with elaborately decorated spires, louvers, gargoyles, and other carvings. Inspiring to look at from both inside and out."

Max's Allegheny Tavern
German restaurant · East Allegheny
"Max's Allegheny Tavern, North Side. In a neighborhood originally settled by German immigrants you’d think there would be some great places for German food and libation. You’d be right, and one of the best is Max’s. The atmosphere is like walking into a gone-by era, a great old neighborhood tavern since 1903. But people come for the authentic German dishes and Bavarian beers. We can’t spell anything on the menu, but trust us, it’s all great. If you’re indecisive get the platter, and wash it down with a Köstritzer Schwarzbier … but don’t get your lederhosen in twist about proper glassware, it all comes in a mason jar."
