Google
It was my first time visiting Commonplace Coffee in Pittsburgh, PA, and based on the advertisements, I decided to order their current seasonal Cherry Pie flavoured iced latte, with a piece of Coffee Cake. I honestly didn't enjoy the latte too much, it seemed very watery and I didn't get any hint of cherry flavour which I was hoping to try. As for the Coffee cake, I don't believe they baked it themselves but it was soft and tasty. Service was okay and the coffee shop is clean and seems modern inside with a beautiful exterior. The coffee shop is also near a little park which is lovely if the weather is nice outside. Thank you

Amazing little cozy Cafe off the main strip. With a little garden across for great ambiance. The café itself is nice and cozy with a cool boutique look inside with decent size seating. Ordered their iced lavender latte. It came out very watery. I could only taste water and lavender not the coffee. May need to try it hot. Also ordered a coffee cake. Slightly stale and clearly pre-made from a bit ago. Or at least how it looked and tasted. Service was subpar sadly. May come again.

Trendy small cafe in a small neighborhood. My friend and I stopped here for coffee and a snack after exploring the neighborhood. I had an iced Americano and the chocolate chip cookie was really good. She really enjoyed her tea and muffin.

Google
An uncommon and very special Commonplace Cafe in a trendy North Shore Pittsburgh neighborhood. Go visit and walk the gorgeous neighborhood. We love the place.

Passed through Pittsburg on our way to Ann Arbor. Commonplace was awesome! Friendly, generous, accommodating and knowledgeable! Can’t wait to stop on our way through in the future. Super friendly to our 6 year old :)

Exceptional espresso in an uber cool area. Plenty of seating inside and out and a lot of character in the building. Taste 2.9 Temp 2.9 Texture 2.7 (8.5/9) Art 0.5 Total 9.0

Google
Great location with plenty of seating, including tables in a cute neighborhood garden across the street. Espresso is bright, not the traditional Italian pull, and mixed drinks are good but lean towards the sweeter side.

Google
Quaint little coffee shop in the neighborhood. They serve variety of drinks from the coffee beans roasted by Commonplace coffee. We did not try their bakery this time, but saw pretty much everyone else ordered some and everything looked yummy. Tried their cold brew and hot latte with house-made honey flavor, both were really good. For those who do not drink coffee, they also have matcha latte, chai latte, or hot cocoa and tea available as well. Such a nice and relaxing atmosphere to come enjoy your day or finish up some work. The staffs were very nice as well. Will definitely be back

Yelp
The inside was cozy the food and drinks tasted great and the staff were very nice and answered any questions we had

Yelp
Small little coffee shop tucked away in North Side. Ordered an oat milk cappuccino with extra espresso. Service was pretty quick for how busy it was. Most perfect cappuccino I've ever had. I could've cried. Super dense foam. The barista needs to show every coffee shop in Pittsburgh how to do it. Amazing. 10000/10.

Yelp
We stopped by this place on our last morning in Pittsburgh and lemme just say, it's a vibe. We got lucky w/ parking, which happens to be right in front of the store but from the look of it, parking doesn't seem to be a problem since you're able to find a place almost anywhere. The store is located at the end of the block and honestly you can't miss it. You'll either see a lot of people sitting/ standing outside or across the street waiting for their order. Inside isn't that big but it isn't tight either. Staff isn't the friendliest and is straight to the point but it'll do. I ended up getting their blackberry latte and it taste exactly how it sounds. Really good if you're looking for their seasonal drinks. There's also a garden right across the street w/ plenty of tables that you can work or just enjoy your drink. I absolutely loved it. This wasn't the Commonplace Coffee location that we originally had planned to go to, but I'm not complaining. I'm glad that we did and will definitely return on our next trip back here.

Yelp
I am seriously reconsidering my decision to walk around Pittsburgh in this summer heat. On my way from one spot to the next, I found this spot and spent an hour or so colling off with an iced coffee and some wifi before heading onwards. There is a nice friendly vibe here with two big tables and three smaller tables inside, power outlets to be found and yes, great coffee. It was a pleasant rest in a nice neighborhood. Yelp
My first time being here and it was cool to see the difference between the cafe near my neighborhood compared to this one. This one feels more hippy and cool whereas the one in my neighborhood feels quiet and workaholic.

Yelp
We stopped here after a trek. We were very excited, and ordered two cold brews. They did not have oatmilk or alt milk options which was a bummer. They did have an oat creamer option. When i asked about caramel -- I was told they didn't have this. Instead they have a honey and other mixture syrup, and my counter part did not sweeten his. I was excited to try this and did. It was a little sweet although I was not impressed with the flavor of coffee. I also got a coffee cake, it was cinnamon flavored and tasty although a little dry. My lack of stars is due to the individual behind the counter seeming cold, not super nice, or happy to be there. The inside of the coffee shop was lovely, felt more laid back, and cozy. We decided to eat and enjoy our coffee at the park across the street but Commonplace had seating outside, but we wanted to enjoy the nature. Commonplace also had fun stickers (which we got one), lots of coffee, and other things for gifts or consumption. The price of the packaged coffee appeared overpriced imo, for a very small amount. Overall I wouldn't come back here but it is a nice stop after walking from Randyland.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Sunday around 11am. There was a decent crowd in hand and the inside of the coffee shop is on the smaller side. So, it was a little awkward to wait to order while people were also waiting for drinks and trying to shop the small business goods. The staff were super friendly and quick to take my order, though! Our drinks came out in less than 3 minutes. I ordered a dirty chai and it was perfect; not too sweet, but mildly spicy. My mom had a lemon ginger tea and she said it was good. The tea was definitely fresh leaves in a hand tied bag. She kept the cup and made a second small cup at home with the same bag and said it wasn't weak at all. The bathroom was small, unisex, and clean. The cafe is in a cute neighborhood and has a few tables outdoors, as well.

Yelp
It just felt good as I got in. After long time I experienced coffee served to you on table. It was cool. Good place to come work. I wish they have vegan muffins.

Yelp
Great vibes, good coffee, and you can even take your mug to the park across the street!

Yelp
Amazing coffee. Great environment. Tasty treats. What else do you need? The Mexican War Streets location was just the right place.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
This is a great place to grab a coffee in the Mexican War Streets area, especially because there isn't another option. Luckily, the coffee here is excellent and they've got some delicious pastries as well. Note: it is not wheelchair or stroller friendly as there are stairs to get inside.

Yelp
I got a vanilla oat milk latte. It was excellent. Creamy, balanced and exactly what I needed. Staff was super friendly and fast. The shop was full of people on laptops, working midweek. Great little neighborhood coffee shop!

Yelp
Love this place! Had a espresso, came with sparkling water, refreshing for the warm weather. Also, I visited on a Monday noon, when they have the JustRolldup sushi truck, the poke bowl and sushi roll were amazing. Love both of them! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
I love the "neighborhood" feel of Commonplace Coffee! My go-to is an iced vanilla oat milk latte & they never disappoint - I love consistency when it comes to my coffee drink. I also got the egg, cheese & pesto breakfast sandwich. It's made in-house and was pretty good! The bread was not my favorite choice because it got a little soggy but it was still delicious! Overall, would definitely recommend Commonplace Coffee!

Yelp
Commonplace is a beautiful coffee shop nestled in the heart of the Mexican war streets. They make a gorgeous looking latte. The coffee is pretty good but not the best you can get in Pittsburgh. I come for the atmosphere both inside and out--outside being the most quaint with the tables in the courtyard. They also have been increasing the amount of food & treats they carry in the past couple of years which is nice to have if you're looking for eats as well. The barista/os have never been the friendliest, but I think they take their jobs and the coffee pretty seriously. I just can't help but feel like I'm bothering them the majority of the time I order at the counter. Also wish they carried almond milk as I'm not a fan of oat. Overall, worth the visit and spending some time in.

Yelp
This coffee shop is generally a relaxed environment that people can chat or do work in. The staff is always amicable and patient! I've never had a negative experience with any of them. The coffee here is one of the best in Pittsburgh!! You can really tell that they care about the quality of their coffee. They also have pastries that are always changing and extremely tasty! The last time I was there I had an apple ginger scone which was such an intriguing combination. It was a pretty refreshing pastry and I could really taste the ginger. Overall, I would recommend this place if you have not checked it out already!
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
Great little spot! Lots of tea options. I got a roobios tea with oat milk. They also had a few fun gluten free pastries so I tried the vanilla latte scone! It was yummy! Staff was friendly and helpful. I appreciated that they had some games like chess and scrabble so dabbled in a game of chess with my boyfriend while we were there. I liked the feeling of the place while inside, felt welcoming and cozy. They even had a food truck The Blue Sparrow outside serving up lunch today.

Yelp
Comfortable, welcoming corner coffee shop. 3pm on a Tuesday and the tables are full inside and out (it's a good thing). I ordered the Tanzania roast as a pour over. Very nice quality. I am not picking up all the fruity notes but it's is very smooth and bright. I also order a decaf pour over ( because I am old) which is just as good as the Tanzanian. The cookie was soft and tasty with out being extremely sweet. The word commonplace is fitting. Literally a pastor and what seems to be church staff having a meeting on one side, a gender neutral persons next to me and a cute same sex couple ordering drinks. This is a common place for all. Enjoy your visit!

Monty T.

Yelp
Love this shop that is less than a block from my house. Beverages are excellent as is the service. Highly recommended.

Yelp
What a cute coffeeshop! It has an eclectic industrial-boho vibe with black metal chairs, wooden tables and benches, plants and flowers all around, and blue tie-die kerchiefs adding color and texture. The staff, masked, were friendly, and I greatly enjoyed both my rooibos tea and the moist coffeecake. Internet was a little wonky (only half the pages I tried to open loaded), but the air conditioning was welcome on a hot day. I had heard that parking could be difficult in the residential neighborhood with many spots requiring permits, but I was able to easily find free, shaded parking a short walk away. If you don't need to be plugged in, you can sit in the lovely walled garden across the street.

Yelp
I'm visiting the 'Burgh for Thanksgiving and did the YMCA turkey trot. Someone mention Commonplace so I figured it was worth a shot. I was not disappointed and in fact very impressed. I had a delicious chai tea, coffee cake, and sampled a blueberry muffin. The tea was excellent. People don't realize that a good cup of chai tea is hard to find. Excellent taste, great presentation. The coffee cake was excellent as well. Great sponge-y base layer for dipping. Sugary top for some extra sweetness. Highly recommend dipping this in what we beverage you get. The muffin had a generous portion of good size blueberries. You ever had a muffin with a pinch of blueberries???? Nope, not here. They also had a a community pot luck going on that was not only cute but very refreshing to see the community gathering on thanksgiving. Kudos to them for doing something to bring people together in a time with so much division in the world!!! This place has creativity and charm! Check out my pic of the soap dispenser obituary. Love the creativity!!!

S S.

Yelp
Nice little shop. Had a tea and it was good. Then ordered turkey club sandwich. Was just ok. It was circular turkey with some cheese and bacon with mixed greens. On panini bread that was toasted. Probably should have ordered a dessert instead of sandwich. I would rate 3.5

Yelp
Always a pleasure to visit Commonplace Coffee. I would visit this location even though I lived closer to other locations. I liked the area so much I moved close by and I am here several times a week. The coffee is great, and the staff is friendly. Have an uncommon positive experience At Commonplace!

Yelp
Good service and cool vibe. Easy place to grab some coffee and read a book or do some work.

Yelp
Pretty quiet place to work from. A few plugs for your laptop. Offer tea, coffee, and sweet treats in case you are looking for something to snack on.

Yelp
I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for our morning coffee. We had been trying different places every Sunday and on this day my wife picked Commonplace Coffee. It's located on the corners of Buena Vista and Jacksonia St in the Mexican War Streets and if you aren't looking for it, you probably wouldn't stumble across it. Due to Covid, they require you to wear a mask to enter and order, but allow you to take it off once you are at your table. The inside consists of 5 tables, a couple of 6 tops, a 5 top, a table with benches and then two smaller ones, all of which were full on this morning. Then the back area is where you order. They also had four outdoor tables to sit at, including two with umbrellas, but the 21 degree weather meant no one was outside. On this morning I decided to order a large oatmilk latte while my wife went with a small americano. We also decided to have breakfast here and so went with the breakfast burrito and the classic sandwich. The menu described the burrito as coming with eggs, black beans, hash browns and cheese while the classic sandwich came with bacon, eggs and cheese. Our drinks were ready fairly quickly and then I just had a bit longer of a wait for our breakfast sandwiches. Once I got into my car I was able to try the oatmilk latte and it was pretty tasty. You could really taste the oatmilk with the coffee playing the supporting role. In order to try the coffee I tasted my wife's Americano and thought it was pretty good. You could tell the beans were freshly roasted and it had a rich and smooth taste to it. After I got home, I was able to unwrap the breakfast sandwiches. I was a little disappointed by the size, especially for the breakfast burrito but they both did look good. I first tried the breakfast burrito and it was solid. It was seasoned nicely but could have used a bit more cheese. After that I tried the classic breakfast sandwich and found it more to my liking. A large egg, the cheese and the bacon made it both filling and tasty. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. My wife and I both enjoyed our coffees and the breakfast sandwiches were decent too.

Yelp
I love what this coffee shop has done to adjust for Covid in 2020! You can't walk in and order at the counter or sit down in the table/chair area... BUT, you can walk up to the window and order curbside. This isn't even for drivers, just pedestrians. I love it. Way to innovate, Commonplace! The drinks weren't bad either. The iced coffee was a bit bitter, but it was super tasty and woke me up. The others in my party enjoyed their beverages, as well. Thanks so much, Commonplace. Keep up the great work.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
The coffee was good and the interior was cozy, but the service was questionable. I ordered an iced latte and after sitting inside for a while, a small fly flew into my coffee because the cafe kept their front door wide open. I went to the counter and asked if they could give me a new cup or just scoop out the top part with the fly for me and I went back to my table. A separate male barista came up to me with my fly coffee and said: "can I ask what your expectations are" with a blank stare. I told him "umm can I just get a new cup but half the size is fine". I don't know about you guys but personally I don't particularly enjoy flies in my drinks. Especially when they chose to keep the front door open and there were at least 5 big flies flying around at all times. Honestly still pretty shocked at their response. How much does it cost to make a new cup of coffee? Is it really such an outrageous request to bring the coffee back to them? And for them to ask me what my expectations are...like I don't know, take it out? replace it? Don't make me feel like an idiot for asking? Definitely would not return.

Yelp
COVID -19 REVIEW thank you for making me feel comfortable here during the pandemic. Employees wore masks, there were clearly marked areas for "orders, and pick ups" and there were touch free payment options in place. I ordered the raspberry iced tea, with mint. The tea was $3 and very delicious; can not wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
My friend at work is crazy about the coffee at Commonplace so we visited today and it really is good coffee!! I sampled the "winter solstice" coffee blend today and it was amazing.. so smooth. They ran out of the coffee I really wanted but was able to find it a few streets over at the Mayfly Market & Deli! Todays special was the "Raspberry Latte" so I just had to get.. and oh my goodness it was so so so so good. Probably the best latte I have ever had! Décor was super cute too. Thanks Commonplace.. we will be returning very soon.

Yelp
Loveeeely coffee shop nestled in the beautiful Northside. I love their lattes and cappuccinos. I typically get plain, but their mochas are incredible if you want some flavor. My mom, who doesn't even like coffee, loves their iced mocha lattes. Their chocolate chip cookies are MAGIC. If you can find a spot to sit, it's a very cozy place to hang out or work.
google avatar

Hanna I.

Yelp
Everything about this place is top tier. Bright, spotless interior. Charming baristas. Cute, comfy seating. At the end of your coffee and snack you bus your cups at the bin to the left of the barista counter -- just helping people be safe from confusion. While in the area treat yourself to the mattress factory of contemporary art. Also, ask if you can enjoy your cup in the garden across the street. Don't forget to tip these lovely people, they do not get paid enough! On average people need to make over $20 after taxes just to afford a third of rent. And we all know north side is on the higher end of that median.
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
Commonplace is overall solid, just a few "bummer" moments from my order. Ordered a breakfast burrito and was disappointed with the tiny size and no hot sauce that was ordered. Same thing happened with one of my drinks that was made with dairy when it shouldn't have. It could have definitely made the day worse but thankfully it was okay. My chai latte was the highlight along with a fresh blueberry muffin that was bursting with fresh berries. Overall enjoyable and have hood COVID regulations. It was cranking on a Saturday morning in the middle of a rainy day!
google avatar

Dienw L.

Yelp
I absolutely adore Commonplace coffee. The coffee & snacks are delicious, the baristas as delightful, and the atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. I have one recommendation: Use the A/C. The shoppe gets incredibly toasty to the point that I do not know how Customers, yet alone the baristas, make it for any length of time in the building.

Yelp
Nicely executed, but sour tasting coffee Taste: 3, Value: 3, Atmosphere: 4 Went to this coffee shop during our day walking around the Mexican war streets. The inside was nice with a few big tables to sit at, large windows and wifi. No outdoor seating however except one very small round wire table with two small chairs. We ordered the affogato and a latte. The latte's foam was perfection! Smooth microfoam that lasted all the way to the bottom of the cup. However, the coffee itself (which is something this coffee shop prides itself on) was rather sour, so much so the foam itself tasted sour. The affogato had Leona's ice cream which was delicious and served with a side of seltzer and a small cookie. However, similar to the latte the coffee was sour. They also offer Leona's ice cream sandwiches at this location, but we didn't get to try any. Overall, if they were able to improve the taste of their coffee either by sourcing different beans or not over roasting them this would have been one of the best latte's in Pittsburgh. However, it is unfortunate the coffee was sour.

Yelp
Great coffee, cool neighborhood. During our road trip stop in Pittsburgh, we naturally had to find an awesome local coffee spot and we decided to check out Commonplace. We visited both the location at Mexican War Streets and at Nova Place. Loved the coffee, food and people!
google avatar

Adam G.

Yelp
My wife and I visited Commonplace about two weeks ago! Sorry for the late review! We loved our experience here! The coffee was delicious, we let the barista pick our ice lattes and we were totally satisfied. It also helped that we had a beautiful day and had great outdoor seating across the street near a small park area!
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Courtesy is not so "common" at this location. Coffee was great, service not so much. I am from California and it was my first time visiting the area. My fiancé and I read great reviews about this location, but the experience was not pleasant. Staff was not friendly or welcoming and made it seem as if my partner and I were a bother. Such a shame at such a neat location!
google avatar

Ronado G.

Yelp
We stopped by this spot for a quick coffee+ before hitting up the Mattress Factory. Overall the quality of the drinks and food was good! A few things from my experience: The breakfast burrito was VERY small. Probably half of what I had expected for the price. That being said it was delicious. Wish it had come with a salsa or sauce but other than that no complaints. I ordered a Dirty Chai Latte with non dairy milk. It was delicious. I also ordered a Matcha, which was stated on the menu as "Matcha". After I took a giant gulp of the drink down, I realized they had made me a Matcha Latte with dairy milk.... which I don't drink. My stomach was torn up for the entire rest of the day, unfortunately. I don't know if it was the cashier who misunderstood or if their menu is marked incorrectly, but I was pretty bummed. Overall, this place seems like they do a good job, but I would be careful around confirming you're getting what you want.
google avatar

Carlie H.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting their location in Mexican War Streets/Northside. I wanted to try something new, and after perusing their drink menu, I happened to ask if they could make a London Fog. They said they could (like an unofficial secret menu). I also substituted with almond milk. It was very delicious! This is a small space with limited seating/tables, so I took my drink outside to enjoy in the courtyard across the street.
google avatar

Craig Z.

Yelp
Stopped here on a road trip from New York City the middle of Missouri, tasting independent coffee roasters and cafes all along the way. Commonplace was fine, but didn't come in very high on our list. The offering seemed a little more limited than most, and I remember them saying something about COVID, but certainly all the cafes we went to were grappling with the same conditions so that doesn't explain that much. If passing through Pittsburg and only given the opportunity to visit one cafe, I felt like there is a better one. Great neighborhood to walk around a bit though.
google avatar

Courtney P.

Yelp
Wanting an afternoon pick me up and needing to kill some time before our reservation at a local art museum, we stopped by Commonplace coffee. I ordered a cold brew with hazelnut and oat milk. My husband ordered a classic black iced coffee. And my mother ordered a green ice tea. For a little something sweet, we split a chocolate chip cookie. The staff were kind and engaging. The drinks were cool and refreshing. And the chocolate chip cookie was the perfect sweet little touch. A great little neighborhood coffee shop!

Yelp
Can get very busy during the middle of the day. Cute little town to walk up and down with tons of options to eat after a calm cup of coffee. Priced well

Yelp
Fantastic little spot in north side to grab a coffee and breakfast sandwich. Love the diversity in selection and the added bonus of being across from a garden area to sit.

Yelp
love this place. great little neighborhood coffee shop with rotating art. they make beautiful lattes and are always friendly

Yelp
I happened upon this place while walking around and enjoyed their ice coffee. It was refreshing and tasted good black. They were all out of their baked goods by the time I got there, but I'd love to try some one day.

Yelp
Heck yes,, the atmosphere is so chill and the neighborhood is so cute,, reminds me of German village in Columbus! I only got a drip coffee and it was good! The service nice and quick, and UGH the coffee cup was very very cool :) the only thing is that it's kinda tricky to get to. I'm not from Pittsburgh, so the hills are always daunting for me.

Yelp
Super cool coffee shop in the heart of the Mexican War Streets area! The coffee (and tea) here is very good, the staff are friendly and prices are good. Commonplace has a really nice atmosphere, it's very chill, a lovely bright open space with windows on two sides and a few chairs outside. I love how they have renovated the space but have also managed to maintain a lot of the buildings original features. In addition to the great beverages they sell cookies and doughnuts.
