"Gloucester Park, East Perth by Studio Bomba. In the 1920s Perth’s drapery moguls, the Brennan Bros, established a gentlemanly club for trotting enthusiasts. And a club is in need of a clubhouse; nay, not just a clubhouse, but its own racing course.It took a decade to take a mosquito-infested swamp and turn it into an oasis for lovers of the gee-gees and gambling; featuring a glam grandstand, palm-lined pacing track and 86-window (!) tote house for punters to place their bets at. Originally named Brennan Park (an honour lost due to disagreements, debts and drinking), the racecourse opened in 1929 to an attendance of 17,000 people – almost 10% of the city’s then population.Despite a multitude of modifications over the years, the elegant entrance gates remain largely unchanged. And if it is your thing, you can still trundle along to the races every Friday night."

"Queens Gardens, East Perth by Studio Bomba. For those who’ve watched the mushfest Notting Hill, featuring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, you might remember another important character – a park bench bearing the inscription ‘For June who loved this garden. From Joseph who always sat beside her.’ Turns out Queens Gardens is the perfect place for celebrity park benches to retire to, as it was gifted to the City of Perth by an anonymous gent following a failed marriage proposal. Ouchie.Opened in 1899 and named in honour of Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee, the botanic gardens replaced the city’s former brickworks. It’s hard to believe that the beautiful be-ducked lakes were once clay pits. The garden’s iconic 1929 Peter Pan bronze is a cast from the Kensington Gardens original by George Frampton. So many whimsical little animals are to be discovered in its form, that it’s like crack for kiddies!"

"Hula Bula Bar, East Perth by Studio Bomba. Step off the office-blocked highrise-laden streets into an island oasis. Tiki bar? Rum den? Cocktail club? No matter which way you swing it, Hula Bula is instantly happy-making.It is a wonderland of kitsch exotica and midcentury eclectica. Carrying on the tiki torch lit by LA’s love of Polynesian-themed bars in the 50s and 60s, Hula Bula specialises in rum-based cocktails (sporting over 170 varieties of rum, many rare and unusual) and lush lounge tunes. You can't not smile when sipping booze in a tiki mug, adorned with fruit and frou frou. It’s humanly impossible."

"Whipper Snapper Distillery, East Perth by Studio Bomba. If you’re talking hidden gems, this is the shiniest of them all. Moonshiny, even! (Sorry.) It’s not everyday you uncover a distillery tucked away in a railway-sided street amongst warehouses and workshops.Whipper Snapper Distillery make premium small-batch moonshine and whiskey from all-Australian ingredients. Their story started with two bomber pilots during WWII: an American who shared a recipe with an Australian. Fifty years of backshed distilling later, veteran Vic shared both his memoirs and moonshine expertise with a young neighbour Al – one of the trio of whipper snappers who further refined the recipes that you can sample and purchase today.Open daily for tastings and coffee. Also ask about their distillery tours and whiskey workshops."

"Arrival Hall, East Perth by Studio Bomba. Oh, Lisa and Clement (and furry little Lexi, lover of belly rubs)! The havoc your carefully curated hall of objects has wreaked on our wallets is monumental in scale. And yet, we don’t regret a spent cent.Arrival Hall is the design shop equivalent of that unassuming friend we all have; who appears impossibly impeccable and innately stylish, even seconds after an Ashtanga yoga session. Who knows the best places to eat, drink and travel to. Whose home is equal parts envy-inducing and welcoming. Who writes thank you notes. We’d hate them if they weren’t so damn delightful."

"Toast, East Perth by Studio Bomba. Sourdough. White. Wholemeal. Multigrain. Rye. Ciabatta. Challah. Turkish. Linseed & quinoa. Potato & parmesan. Banana. Raisin. Fig & walnut.It’s not a tricky concept. Toast is good at toast. And putting tastiness on top – more good things like eggs, fresh avo, grilled toms, house-made beans, smoky bacon, cured salmon, sardines, blue cheese and apple, mascarpone, honey and toasted almonds, rhubarb raspberry compote, oh so many good things.Accompanied by an amazing water view. "Perth City Farm, East Perth by Studio Bomba. Men of the Trees are glitter-dipped miracle-makers. They took an old scrapmetal yard and battery-recycling plant by a busy railway line and turned it into a haven to nourish body and soul. Smack dab in the heart of the city. Through the farm and nursery, people from diverse backgrounds learn permaculture and organic gardening practices. Fresh produce moves seamlessly from farm to table via weekly farmers markets and the City Farm Café. There is live music and events and forums and fairs and workshops and all kinds of community-enhancing wonderfulness. Old Macdonald would be envious."

"DuoTone, East Perth by Studio Bomba. OK. OK. We admit it. We came for the killer typography and branding (the owner sang the praises of Symphonic Pixels) but we stayed for EVERY-EFFING-THING else. DuoTone is an oasis amongst officeland. An antidote to the grab-and-go’s soggy sandwiches sweating in plastic packaging. Phew! If you must carry a briefcase, at least you can fill it with the likes of buckwheat-cacoa granola with hazelnut yoghurt or Thai-style tofu slaw or wasabi-salmon salad with quinoa, kale and pickled cucumber. Or sit a spell with the paper and a Seven Seeds single origin. Go on, loosen that tie."

"Kitsch Bar, Leederville Mt Hawthorn. A slice of Asia on the outskirts of Leederville; Kitsch Bar is well worth a visit. The food is a hot, sweet, crispy, salty and sour mix of street food with an ambience and colourful decor to match."

"Pinxtos, Leederville Mt Hawthorn. Small bar and bites, Pinxtos is the perfect place to unwind in the evening. Try an array of Spanish flavours such as leek, mushroom and jamon serrano croquettes or crispy pork belly. Be sure to check out their specials board too for larger plates."

"Varga Girl, Leederville Mt Hawthorn. Walking passed this boutique store will definitely draw you in with eye-catching window displays, trendy interior design, naked globes hanging from the roof and vintage inspired cow hide rugs. This light and airy boutique stocks Australian and international clothing labels, accessories and gift-ware items. The colour coded racks of clothing are rather avant-garde and the range of belts and denim are endless. This is the place to pick up a frock for that special occasion."

"Atlas Divine, Leederville Mt Hawthorn. An alternative and edgy boutique store trading in mens, womens and children clothing, shoes and accessories. It is adorned with vintage wooden cabinets and wardrobes stocking fashion labels from across the world. Here you can find anything from casual, quirky, elegant or formal attire, and all the accessories to match your entire outfit."

"Ishikiya Japanese Restaurant, Midland. Ishikiya Japanese Restaurant is tucked into the side of Midland Gate Shopping Centre, opposite a row of heritage buildings. While Ishikiya serves a range of dishes you would expect to find on a Japanese menu, the restaurant has innovative and seasonal specials, which means there is always something new to try. The last time I went I had a delightful and fresh tofu and avocado salad, perfectly crisp and seasoned to perfection. What I look forward to the most every time I go is the cheesecake. "Midland Railway Workshops, Midland. The Midland Railway Workshops are a cluster of impressive early nineteenth century industrial buildings and are an iconic piece of Western Australian history. The Workshops officially closed in 1994 after being in operation for over 90 years. Since then, the Workshops Precinct has been undergoing a process of urban regeneration. The site also features a war memorial for fallen soldiers who were employees of the Workshops, and a large-scale mural by internationally renowned street artist, ROA. "Neri's Kitchen and Bakery, Midland. This little shop packs a serious Filipino flavour punch. If you're in the mood for freshly baked Pandesal this is the place to curb the cravings. A selection of authentic Filipino food is served daily between 10am and 3pm to dine in or takeaway."

"Rustic Gallery, Midland. This place has everything: from old farm machinery, garagenalia, tractor seats, sewing machines, wheels, wagons, and all manner of collectables. "Tropico, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Tropico in North Beach opened back in November 2014 and from what we can gather it’s been packed ever since. It’s not difficult to see why either. Firstly the coffee is superb. It’s by Bondi-based roaster Will & Co and is smooth, creamy and seems to match the food perfectly. Now onto that food. We’ve had friends rave about Tropico’s menu and we couldn’t agree more. Fresh, local ingredients and inventive, well thought-through dishes make Tropico the perfect choice for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Combine that with ultra friendly service, a great location and a fantastic interior fit-out, it’s safe to say we’ll be going back very soon."

"Mullaloo Beach, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Mullaloo Beach is a clean, family-friendly beach patrolled by the lifeguards from Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club. You’ll always feel safe swimming here, which is worth noting as some Perth beaches do have some scary rips, oh, and the odd shark.Mullaloo is one of our favourite beaches in the area, which is saying a lot as we also have so many impressive beaches, stretching from Trigg and North Beach all the way up to Quinns and Yanchep in the north. We’re pretty much spoilt for choice."

"Hillarys Boat Harbour, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. In Summer it’s easy to see why Hillarys Boat Harbour is packed full of locals and tourists alike, as it’s really not just your regular marina and shopping precinct. With a safe swimming beach and theme park with waterslides for the kids, excellent bars, cafes and restaurants for the adults, what’s not to like. Team that with boutique shops selling locally made goods and produce, surf shops and even whale watching tours, this place really has it all."

"Roma Republic, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Roma Republic is an unexpected oasis in the middle of the quiet, leafy suburb of Craigie. It has a warm, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The interior is an eclectic mix with high, industrial looking ceilings mixed with rustic pallet tables, recycled storage crates and vintage bikes hanging from the roof space. Be sure to pop in if you’re ever in the area and enjoy the space whilst sampling a very decent coffee, lunch or something from the very tempting cake selection. The raw carrot cakes and brownies are particular favourites of ours. We’ve also heard very good things about the pizza."

"Little C’s, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Pizza doesn’t get much more varied than what’s on offer at Little C’s. This place used to be called Little Caesar’s but the name is the only thing that’s changed as the huge menu still boasts some of the best pizzas we’ve tried. Vegos get a fair go here too and we never tire of our personal fave the ‘Mushroom Records’. The music theme runs through the whole menu with ‘Smashing Pumpkins’, ‘Jane’s Addiction’ and local heroes ‘Tame Impala’ also getting pizzas named after them. This place also does superb dessert pizzas. We can personally recommend the ‘Eskimo Joe’ or the ‘Green Day’, if you still have room left for something sweet."

"Wanneroo Markets, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Whilst it may not be the prettiest or tidiest looking market, what it lacks in looks it certainly makes up for in terms of character, atmosphere and the huge variety of goods on sale. From boho hippie frocks to locally made organic produce, through to some crazy looking onesies and excellent Asian food stalls and groceries, Wanneroo Markets is the real deal. No snooty sales staff here, just friendly locals only too willing for a chin-wag, whether you’re buying or not. This is an authentic, old school market well worth a visit."

"Chippy’s Beach Shack, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. If you enjoy a relaxed lunch with a view then head up to Chippy’s Beach Shack in Jindalee. The coastal views from this alfresco diner are pretty breathtaking and the food is not bad either. The menu is contemporary, fresh and features some great local seafood dishes. The cafe is also dog friendly. The best thing about this place though is the location. Just metres away from some of the most awesome, elevated ocean views we’ve seen up this way."

"The Buttery, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Anyone that says there are no great cafes north of Sorrento should head to The Buttery in Joondalup. It’s a family owned business and it’s probably our favourite little spot in this part of the world. Friendly, attentive service, a peaceful ambience and the best breakfast we’ve tasted around these parts. We can’t get enough of the homemade hash browns, made from crispy yet soft, grated potato. We’ve tried quite a few things on the menu and if you’re really hungry then go for the Bushman’s breakfast. Their muesli is also a must try. The Buttery is well worth making the trip north and we will be back very soon."

"Indian Ocean Brewery, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. The Indi’s location is pretty special, sitting right on the picturesque Mindarie Marina, surrounded by boats and sparkling blue ocean. This is an artisan craft brewery with all brewing and experimentation done on the premises. Maybe try a tasting paddle before settling for a pint of your favourite brew, ours currently being the Kolsch and the Vietnamese-inspired Street Beer, both perfect for 40 degree days when an IPA or Pale Ale don’t seem to quench the thirst. The food is worth trying too, especially the pizzas. If you’re ever near the marina then this place is worth checking out, to sample the beers and to gaze out onto the beautiful Indian Ocean."

"The Hardware Store Cafe, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Just on the lower fringes of the northern suburbs, Scarborough sits around 14km northwest of Perth city. Cutlery sits in tool boxes and the overall feel is rustic yet still contemporary. It always seems busy and it’s popularity is understandable given the excellent food, inviting interior and the friendly, laidback atmosphere."

"Rise & Grind, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. Rise & Grind Espresso Bar is nestled alongside a small line of shops in the suburb of Doubleview. Their selection of cakes, cookies and doughnuts is second to none and quite scary for sugar addicts like ourselves. They also stock the very delectable Top Dup doughnuts, which are a must try.If you like your coffee strong, creamy and frothy then this place will suit you perfectly, plus with their $3 coffee before 9am in the morning, how can you go wrong."

"Lot Six Zero, Northern Suburbs by Zebra. We’re not even sure if Innaloo counts as northern suburbs, but we weren’t going to let that stop us including it in our favourite spots. This place is a little haven with an excellent breakfast and lunch menu. The coffee is not too shabby either. As for the decor, it’s eclectic, vintage, industrial, rustic chic at it’s best. If there’s such a thing. Some wonderful artwork by Hayley Walsh finishes things off nicely. Give this place a try if you’re ever in the vicinity. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed."
