A place we have always found serves up good food and drink is Bivouac, one of the first of the small bars in and around William Street, and heading along for lunch this week, our earlier perceptions were once again confirmed.
Eschewing the seats on the footpath on a warmish day we sat inside near the window and set up with a glass of an Argentinian rosé, Las Perdices. Made from Malbec it has a bouquet of strawberries and cherries, with a dash of spice; nicely acidic palate of raspberries; a little mid palate sweetness but finishing dry.
Onto the food - Bivouac has a Middle Eastern slant to its offerings - we ordered a dish of Malawach tacos, followed by fried haloumi, and a Freekah salad.
The haloumi, nicely crisped skins, with a moist, creamy but chewy interior was accompanied by a sweetish barbeque sauce for dipping - pleasant, simple dish.
The tacos - served on the Jewish fried flat bread, malawach - came with three fillings - first off falafel balls with mayo infused with preserved lemon and green herb salsa, which provided a little zesty lift. The falafel were nutty and crunchy and all that you could wish for from this famous snack food. The mayo had a lemony hint and as I said the salsa a nice fresh zing.
Roasted pork belly was the mainstay of the second of the tacos - amazingly soft, sweetly flavoured, meltingly tender meat, along with pickled chillis - good chilli boost - and black garlic toum - the garlic sauce found throughout the Middle East - salty, garlicky, with a hint of lemons. Excellent dish.
Finally, the third - blackened cauliflower - with its characteristic earthy flavour - served with labneh remoulade - creamy, slightly salty - and sprinkled with dukkah providing a nutty textural contrast.
The salad of freekah, orange segments, zucchini, olives, pomegranate seeds, and more was full of refreshing flavours and textures - simply prepared, spot on really.
As we worked our way through the food, Lady FWO went for another of the Las Perdices, while I opted for a red - Montepulciano from McLaren Vale's Alpha Box and Dice - this is a medium bodied wine, aromas of plums and a little leafy note; the palate has rhubarb and dark plums flavours, good tannin, and a satisfyingly tart finish.
As I said in opening, Bivouac is well worth a visit - excellent Middle Eastern influenced food, very good and well put together wine list, great locale and friendly and efficient waiters. We certainly recommend it.
