As a student of Rotterdam’s Willem de Kooning Acadamy, she wanted to design one that would render all others obsolete. That bag is The New Shoppingbag. Born partly from the idea of reducing the waste involved with the production of plastic bags; and partly from the ‘less is more’ Dutch design philosophy, The New Shoppingbag was an instant hit amongst friends, fashion-lovers and designers alike. The store is located at Mauritsweg 45a, alongside the canal, only a 10 minute walk from the Rotterdam Central Station. In the store they offer colours and sizes from different collections. Their office and studio are located at the same address."

The store is more than just a clothing store; they provide the best fresh sandwiches and coffee in the cafe, there’s also a shop-in-shop teamed-up book store with Mendo. "Altijd in de buurt, Centrum by Mangrove . This lunchroom is the result of an idea that got out of hand. Owners Roger Brouwn and Tobias Prins, both working in the music industry, decided to team up. A shared office seemed ideal, and how great would it be to have a bar in that office where they could host parties! That bar? That became Altijd In De Buurt! On the menu at Altijd in de Buurt you’ll only find things that they personally like to eat and drink. Crazy but amazing creations as result: chicken ‘n waffles, buurtsalon - a variation of the famous Rotterdam kapsalon - and a falafel salad. All the dishes are displayed on the menu with a picture, so you instantly know what you can expect. Altijd In De Buurt creates “in the neighborhood kind of feeling” and yes, there even is a swing! "Markthal, Centrum by Mangrove . This horseshoe-shaped indoor food market, designed by MVRDV, houses apartments, shops and lots of food stalls. The inside wall is covered by an impressive 11.000 m2 art piece by Arno Coenen. During construction a 10th century farm was found. The farm is part of the settlement Rotta that went on to become Rotterdam. In the stairwell of the parking garage under the Market Hall you can see some of the artifacts that we’re excavated."

With it’s down-to-earth and open minded attitude it welcomes all kinds of styles, from jazz to gabber, they all found an audience in the Rotterdammerts. Schorem (Dutch for scumbags) is an old school men-only barbershop in the heart of the working class city of Rotterdam. The shop specialises in the classic cuts that have proven themselves over the decades: pompadours, flattops, contours and the other styles featured on Schorem famous barbershop posters. They don’t take reservations, so be prepared to stand in line. And they take the men-only part very serious: women are not allowed to set foot inside."

"Biergarten, Centrum by Mangrove . Hidden behind the Schieblock you’ll find a German-inspired beer garden. Serving ice cold (Dutch) beer and lots of charcoal-grilled food it’s a nice and friendly place to hang out. It’s busiest on Friday and Saturday and when our National (soccer) team has to play Biergarten explodes with people dressed in orange watching the game on big screens. The lack of German music remains a mystery. Biergarten is an outdoor bar, open from April, closing with a large – and crowded – party during Oktoberfest."

Chairs, lights, sofa's or side tables. His ever changing collection is a feast for the eye the moment you walk in. In store he has a workshop were he restores the pieces if necessary. A small talk with Jarno soon gives you a glimpse about how much he knows about his pieces and their history."

"Scrap XL, Noord by From Form. During every project we step into this store to look around, cause there is always something you can use. Its a store full of scrap materials! Themselves make weird objects out of it and sometimes you’re not exactly sure what to do with it. But its great to sniff around. You might find a hundred disused model legs or a ten meter rubber hose.Around the corner you'll find Gare du Nord, an old train wagon with a nice terrace. They serve bio and vegan dishes."

Right across the highway and next to the railway is the scrap heap heaven from Mijndert G v/d Berg. A 500m2 muddy ground is covered by everything you could think of that's made of metal. Chairs, lights, microwaves, car parts, screws. You name it. If you're lucky, you'll pull something of value out of the junk. We once found a crate full of industrial lights! Not on a metal quest? Enough to see when observing the workers and fortune seekers. But whatever you do, beware of the claaaawwwww!"

"La Zia Maria, West by Studio Dumbar. Nowhere else you can get so spoiled as in La Zia Maria. The boss/chef works with his heart and soul in his Sicilian kitchen and specialist shop. Tasty and simple pastas but also other Italian delicacies like olives, dipping sauces and sausages that let you dream about living in Italy."

"Historisch Delfshaven, West by Studio Dumbar. A short walk through historic Delfshaven. With lovely picturesque bridges and houses it is a sharp sharp contrast to modern Rotterdam. The real Dutch ambiance is enhanced by the old windmill. Only clogs and tulips are missing."

"Urban Espresso Bar, West by Studio Dumbar. The name speaks for itself; the best coffees, cappuccinos… you can find it all at UEB West. Hip and trendy in a nice characteristic corner building on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. You also have a choice of cakes and other sweets, as well as a simple and very nice lunch. The sunny terrace is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy. It’s basically the perfect break during your walk in West."

"Café Verhip, West by Studio Dumbar. Our favourite after-work pub. At Verhip you feel at home. You can eat simple but good food or just have a beer after work. The building dates from 1928 and used to be a grocery store. Later it turned into a bar where a lot of sailors and dockers went for their drink after the hard work in the harbour. The building really stands out in the surroundings. It has so much charm and ambiance!"

"Café de Ooievaar, West by Studio Dumbar. The oldest bar in West is located at the old harbour. The place where regulars drink their daily beer and have passionate discussions about soccer; a real traditional pub with all its charms that makes everyone nostalgic. If you are looking for a typical Rotterdam crowd and a large collection of beers and genevers you’re definitely at the right address!"

"El Aviva, West by Studio Dumbar. The inventor of the famous Dutch dish called ‘kapsalon’; French fries with a lot of shoarma, salad, cheese and sauce! The word ‘kapsalon’ means hairdresser. The dish was invented in 2003, it was the favorite dish of the owner of a hairdresser's shop. He chose all the ingredients. This is how the dish got the name 'kapsalon'. For all those who love a hearty but greasy classic or for those who are looking for a cure to their hangover, this is the dish for you. The very friendly owners will proudly tell you the whole history of the famous dish."

"Eethuisje van Delfshaven, West by Studio Dumbar. For a real Dutch meal like your grandma would make for you. Simple but delicious homemade food. "Raaf, Zuid. RAAF 'Raven' in Dutch and is short for Rotterdam-Art-Adventue-Food. RAAF is known as "The hotspot of Rotterdam South" and is located in an huge, old grain warehouse called The Maassilo.Every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 till 18:00 people visit RAAF to enjoy (healthy) snacks and good local coffee. Have a seat in the giant ravensnest which is an artwork made by the world famous artist couple ‘Arno&Iris' (also known from the Markthal). On weekdays they host all kinds of business events and private parties with that special ‘vintage/industrial-vibe' all over!"

"Café de Ouwehoer, Zuid. Café de Ouwehoer brings back the sweaty atmosphere of the old Katendrecht, once the roughest part of the Port of Rotterdam. Owners Wiland Toelen and John Peate are bringing an ode to whiskey with this bar. Besides the distinct interior you will find a true whiskey lover’s selection: a large choice of single malts, Japanese and special independent bottlings. And for beer lovers, they have the wonderful Anchor Steam Beer on tap. It’s a very nice old fashioned bar, a true must see (and experience) location of the Rotterdam Southside."

"Fenix Food Factory, Zuid. The Fenix Food Factory is a space where everything is fresh. The bread is baked right on the spot, the coffee is freshly roasted, the beer is brewed here and so on. Young, culinary entrepreneurs have transformed this old shed into a culinary mecca for shopping, tasting and experiencing all sorts of local delicacies."

"Kopi Soesoe, Zuid. Kopi Soesoe is Indian for “coffee with milk” and a recipe for coffee with kapulaga and condensed milk. It dates back to the colonial past of Indonesia, just like the name of the street it's in now, the Sumatraweg.In this cozy living room you can experience music from a mini stage and from the turntables. The mini stage is intended for (starting) musicians who are looking for a playground with a small audience. Besides delicious coffee Kopi Soesoe offers you an excellent selection of special beers that you will not find elsewhere. Listen to their great selection of jazz tunes while slowly drinking your Orval Trappist, our favorite."

"Nhow bar, Zuid. The Rotterdam is a multi usage building, for living, working and relaxing. The Nhow Hotel is housed here, and its bar is accessible to everyone. The Nhow bar has a great metropolitan atmosphere, perfect for having a drink with your friends while enjoying the view over the Erasmus bridge and the city skyline. This icon on the South was designed by the famous Rotterdam architect Rem Koolhaas. Along with the Wilhelminapier, also known as the most modern part of the Netherlands, this is a must see for every city enthusiast. Nice little detail, the illustration which represents Rotterdam on Onthegrid is this architectural highlight."

"24/7 Everything Machine, Zuid. If you think that a broad range of food, beverage, confectionery, dairy products and cosmetics are only available in a store, you’re wrong. This life-size 24-hour vending machine has almost everything you need. This machine offers you snacks you’ll need after partying in the Maassilo. And garbage bags, cottage cheese, dates and bread for all the times most other shops are closed."

"Maassilo, Zuid. The Maashaven is a port for grain shipments of the Rotterdam Granary Company since 1906. The Maassilo is the biggest and most productive factory in this harbour. In the 80s – the time of automation – it became clear that the Maassilo was difficult to automate and the building got a new purpose. Today, a big part of the complex is an event location with regular major festivals of various styles. Another part of the Maassilo has been redeveloped into shared business spaces for the creative industry. Check the website for its upcoming events and before you know it you’ll be dancing all night long to some hardcore techno tunes."

"LantarenVenster, Zuid. LantarenVenster is the place to be for world cinema lovers. You can go back in time with classic films or be amazed by documentaries and many good children’s movies. Next to the film department you can find a musical program centered around jazz, but the genre of jazz is broadly interpreted so you will definitely be surprised. In the very stylish designed building (by Alvaro Siza) you will find a complete night out at LantarenVenster. It shows you Rotterdam’s cultural life from its best side."

"Café Rotterdam, Zuid. High ceiling, hints to world travels and the class of what it used to be, but in a typical Rotterdam way. It’s not strange this place is called after the city it’s in. You can order food in a wide variety. For example a good pizza, fresh seafood, risotto, steak tartare with a soft boiled egg, but also a sandwich with some coffee."

"Damage Playground, Zuid. This independent store is located in a modern waterside building facing the city centre next to a subway stop. It’s very spacious with its floor-to-ceiling windows that allow the daylight to come in. With a clean and basic interior the unique selection of products displayed will make you greedy instantly.While setting up the store, brothers Alexandre and Anibal Furtado were inspired by the theme ‘playground’ and developed a playful and multifunctional concept for the interior. It’s not just a regular store, so check it out yourself."

"Koninginnenhoofd, Zuid. From this small park in front of the former headquarters of the Holland America line the views on the Wilhelminapier are overwhelming. Just relax on the grass in summer. It’s nice and warm inside Hotel New York in winter."

"Kantine Walhalla, Zuid. Kantine Walhalla is the name of the original canteen of the staff that worked in the warehouses at the Deliplein. Almost everything is still intact and that gives you a beautiful bright room with a unique and authentic look. The many windows offer sweeping views of Deliplein and the Rijnhaven. Enjoy this special place for a delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee or tea. Or get lucky and visit a show in one of their theatres upstairs or across the street."

"SS Rotterdam, Zuid. One of the most famous post-war Dutch passenger ships nowadays serves as floating multipurpose center. She houses a hotel, several bars and a rear roof with beautiful views. The SS Rotterdam is a wonderful place for everyone. Access to this old cruise ship is free and the walk over Katendrecht to go there is, just like the ship itself, definitely worth it."

"Watertaxi, Zuid. The water taxi is a very special way to get around in the Rotterdam area. The taxi transports you quickly and without any traffic jam on the water. Besides being fast and reliable, it is also a spectacular way to experience Rotterdam from the river. And the more people on board, the lower the cost per person."

"Kaapse Brouwers, Zuid. The Kaapse Brouwers (literally translated Cape Brewers) is the youngest city brewery in Rotterdam. As part of the Fenix Food Factory on Katendrecht they fit perfectly on this breeding ground of all kinds of crafts. Inspired by the harbor they brew tough city beers for a new generation of beer drinkers. Let them surprise you with their daring recipes, taste experiments and old beers in a typical Rotterdam way. The Kaapse Carrie (a strong IPA) is our favorite and highly recommended. Bottoms up, creatives!"

"Nederlands Fotomuseum, Zuid. Las Palmas – the former workshop building of the shipping company Holland America Line – now houses the Dutch Foto Museum. The museum focusses on all forms of photography and regularly displays its own productions. The museum is a source of inspiration, research, inspiring exhibitions and publications.Las Palmas also houses two other cultural organisations: LPII, a space for urban culture and SKVR Photography & Media, a public place for locals to explore their ambition in the areas of photography, video and digital media."

"De Matroos en het Meisje, Zuid. De Matroos en het Meisje (The Sailor and Girl) is a restaurant where you eat potluck. The chefs work with seasonal and local products. The only thing you need to do is select the number of courses (3-6) and the chefs will do the rest for you."

"Posse, Zuid. At the other side of the modern Rijnhavenbrug you immediately step into a nice coffee bar, Posse. If you are sitting on their terrace, the views are divers. On one side you’re looking to Hotel New York and the impressive high-rises next to it. On the other side you can see the beautiful Deliplein and the Fenixloodsen, which houses the Fenix Food Factory with multiple cultural and culinary functions.Visit Posse for your lunch and espresso, in the evening it transforms to a restaurant that brings a new dimension to Katendrecht."
