"In the year 2000, Susan Bijl set out to create a bag. As a student of Rotterdam’s Willem de Kooning Acadamy, she wanted to design one that would render all others obsolete. That bag is The New Shoppingbag. Born partly from the idea of reducing the waste involved with the production of plastic bags; and partly from the ‘less is more’ Dutch design philosophy, The New Shoppingbag was an instant hit amongst friends, fashion-lovers and designers alike. The store is located at Mauritsweg 45a, alongside the canal, only a 10 minute walk from the Rotterdam Central Station. In the store they offer colours and sizes from different collections. As mentioed by other users, designs are beautiful but the product quality is quite bad and not designed for long term use. Support has so far been non existant, which leaves a bad feeling that they are indeed intrested in sales only, and not in sustainability, quality or customer satisfaction. EDIT: the customer service did eventually get in touch and replaced the faulty item. That seems like proper customer support, even though chasing down support contact was not a positive experience.

Beautiful designs, but low product durability. The zipper on my bag broke after a year of use. At the time, they were running a campaign about repairing bags as part of being environmentally friendly, so I went to their shop to ask if they could fix it. I was told they don’t repair zippers. Turns out, their idea of ‘repair’ was putting stickers over holes, which apparently their products tend to get. If you’re looking for durable, high-quality bags, this isn’t the place.

If you are visiting Rotterdam you just have to buy a Susan Bijl bag. These colourful lined bags are a Rotterdam-thing that you see all over the world nowadays. Very sustainable: the concept as well as the bags itself. Perfect gift, in my opinion. The shop is pretty cool, by the way.

I ordered a bag online for pick up in the store. Four days later I went to pick it up and it was not ready, I left my contact information again, because they told me they will call me in two days (I was not). I went back after 4 days and again they didn't have my bag. I was then told that the one I chose on the website (and pay for) was already sold out. They really didn't offer a solution but to wait until next month for more bags to arrive and since I needed the bag for that date I had to pick another color. There was no really effort to correct the situation. Update July 29th After this post, they contacted me and sent me a product as an apology. I appreciate it !
