This guide recommends visiting 3 neighbourhood(s) in Frankfurt am Main: Bahnhofsviertel, Bockenheim and Innenstadt

Taunusstraße 43

Building · Romerberg

"Cream Music, Bahnhofsviertel. This place shouts »Tradition«. It's been here for ever – well since 1904. The walls are plastered with pictures of musicians like Elvis, John Lennon or Frank Sinatra and if you should ever need a Guitar, Strings, Drums or any other musical article you have arrived in »Shangri-La«. Still family owned and very chilled. Take your time and enjoy the place."

FreitagskĂŒche

Restaurant · Goethehaus

"FreitagskĂŒche, Bahnhofsviertel. The FreitagskĂŒche is a quite special place. During the week it's a place to eat lunch and chill. The small menue is best described as unexcited and is well made. You could eat a regular: quiche with salad made from local organic ingredients, have a coffee and eat some homemade Kuchen. Check for the weekly specials
On friday the food is prepared by different amateur cooks and the place is bustling with artists, musicians and compulsory for Frankfurt the occasional lawyer or bank accountant. During summer it's very pleasant to sit outside and listen to the bamboo rustle. They organize exhibitions and live music as well so if you are interested you should have a look at their website or register for their newsletter."

Aber

Cafe · Romerberg

"Aber, Bahnhofsviertel. The »aber« (the name of the bar translates to »but«) is a newcomer. It's an offshoot of the quite famous Riz Restaurant. It's neither bar nor restaurant, but a little bit of both. They have a minimalistic selection of food and a small but good wine selection. The spartanic and geometric interiour is a good fit and still feels very homely. Currently it only opens in the evening."

"SĂŒdseite Internationale Buchhandlung, Bahnhofsviertel. There aren't a lot of bookstores anymore. No wonder since everybody is looking down on their phone, phablet, ebook-reader, you name it. But this is a real bookstore and it is international. So if you want to read a book with real pages made from real paper, this is your best bet. They have a good selection of english, spanish, russian, italian books and german books. The staff is friendly and if you need information on a book they will help you. It you are looking for a notepad or a pen, this is a good place to look."

Plank Café-Bar-Studio

Bar · Romerberg

"Plank, Bahnhofsviertel. This is the incarnation of a hipster place. All the Bahnhofviertel coolness started here. This is were the so called scene meets – art students, musicians and entrepreneurs. During the lunch breaks itÂŽs populated with groovy bank accountants who wear statement socks. Minimal interior but very likable. Service is not their strength, be prepared to be greeted with disinterest and boredom – do not take this personal it's a slightly helpless effort to appear cool. The coffee and Japanese green tea is very good though. If you get the chance try the sweet Portuguese Custard Tarts (PastĂ©is de Nata)."

Pizzeria Montana

Pizza restaurant · Romerberg

"Pizzeria Montana, Bahnhofsviertel. It's the hottest pizza place in the bahnhofsviertel. And thats not only because of the custom made smiley-oven wich cooks the pizza in 60 seconds. The sign on the front is made by the well-known artist Tobias Rehberger. The mozarella is sourced from a local cheese-maker. It's hip and they make gorgeous pizza. Yum-Yum eat 'em up
"

Walon & Rosetti

Permanently Closed

"Wallon und Rosetti, Bahnhofsviertel. This is one of those stylish hybrid bar/restaurant thingies wich seem to pop up as of lately in the bahnhofsviertel. They have been here for some time though. It's hip, it's young (more or less) and it's loud. They have great cocktails and good food. But a bit pricey."

Hotel Nizza

Hotel · Romerberg

"Hotel Nizza, Bahnhofsviertel. A real gem and loved by artists, journalists and designers for it's rooftop terrace with a great view of the frankfurt skyline and tasteful accomodation. The interior is stylish and tasteful, as is the breakfast buffet that includes various fresh homemade spreads and delicacies!"

Bike Boutique Frankfurt

Bicycle Shop · Romerberg

"Bike Boutique, Bahnhofsviertel. Right at the outer rim of the neighborhood is the bike boutique. They offer bikes and parts, and a rental service for folding bikes and a workshop if you need any repair done. They are not the cheapest but very friendly and helpful."

Gutleutstraße 8-12

Building · Romerberg

"Basis, Bahnhofsviertel. The basis is a non-profit association with two main assignments. They support and foster young contemporary art with affordable rental spaces and help professionalize. And then they also have ongoing events and exhibitions."

"Wochenmarkt, Bahnhofsviertel. This is a classic weekly market. You can find bread, vegetables, mediterrian delicacies and sausages. There is also a very good coffee stand (watch out for the black van) and a place to buy and consume german wine, if you are into that kind of thing."

Goldene Schere

Hair salon · Romerberg

"Goldene Schere, Bahnhofsviertel. A straighforward turkish barbershop for men. You don't need to make an appointement. Just walk in, have a cup of black tea and wait till you're up. They are friendly, fast, clean and cheap. The atmosphere is pretty nice if you like the sound of a lot of people talking in languages you don't understand."

Yok Yok City Kiosk

Permanently Closed

"Yok-Yok, Bahnhofsviertel. It's not just a kiosk it's THE kiosk. They have all kinds of beer, organize funny exhibitions and are generally pretty chill. The place is getting a lot of popularity because people like to hang out in front of it. Lately they have to stop selling booze after 10pm because of this, way earlier than all the other kiosks and bars in the area. Many oppose this weird regulation and hope for the Frankfurt authority to take this order back. Anyway this place is a perfect place to start a fun night in Frankfurt!"

Stanley Diamond

Restaurant · Goethehaus

"Stanley Diamond, Bahnhofsviertel. Made by the same people who brought the Maxie Eisen to the Bahnhofsviertel the Stanley Diamond is yet another hip refined restaurant. Featuring green marble and a weekly changing menu this is a place for the »upperclass«. The food is »Hausmannskosts« which means traditional german recipes with a twist, sourced locally. They even have their own collection of seating made by famous furniture designers E15. The staff is very relaxed and if you are looking an easy dinner with excellent food and drinks this is the right place. Do not forget to make a reservation!"

Maxie Eisen

Permanently Closed

"Maxie Eisen, Bahnhofsviertel. The Maxie Eisen has been in the international press already. The New York Times talked about it in it's round up of the 52 Places to Go in 2014. They have the real-deal pastrami and reuben sandwiches. The place is always packed."

Karlstraße 9

Building · Goethehaus

"The Smallest Hotel in Frankfurt, Bahnhofsviertel. It's not actually a hotel per definition but it features a bed and a table. And it is free to stay there for the night!Built by the artist Andrea BĂŒttner in the belltower of the Weißfrauenkirche, the ca. 10 square meter room in the second floor is a very special place to be. Kind of like a birds nest you look down on the hectic street. It is used mainly by journalists and artist. You have access to the toilet and tea kitchen in the church. If you are interested in staying there your contact is curator Thomas Kober (+49 69 247 51 49 69 09 / diakoniekirche@diakonischeswerk-frankfurt.de)"

Pasta e Panini Manifattura

Permanently Closed

"Pasta e Panini, Bockenheim. Franco and Luigi truly are a real insiderÂŽs tip. They bring all finesse and sophistication of italian cuisine to Frankfurt. As the name suggests, there are two types of main dish: Pasta e Panini. The homemade food is prepared with the outmost of care and passion. With unique and natural flavors, Franco and Luigi are bringing some magic to lovers of traditional italian food."

Boki Salon

Hair salon · MessegelÀnde

"Boki Salon, Bockenheim. Boki's Barber Shop combines modern trends, products, and technology with the nostalgic flair of old-school barber traditions. Boris Lipovac aka "Boki" and his team are welcoming their clients in a stress-free-feel-good-atmosphere, where the guys get a beer and the ladies enjoy some Prosecco. Boris loves his job and takes his time for every hair-given challenge. Modern accessories and innovative products – a visit is surely worth your time!"

Doctor Flotte

Pub · Goethehaus

"Doctor Flotte, Bockenheim. A must for every hard-drinking and social pub-adventurer. Located centrally at Bockenheimer Warte, Dr. Flotte is a welcome alternative to all other pubs and cafes in that area. The interior is nothing short but spectacular and the guests are as well. A lot of interesting and totally different people, like students, bankers and professional drinkers ensure that each visit to Dr. Flotte's is a unique and memorable experience full of surprises."

Kish Restaurant

Persian restaurant · MessegelÀnde

"Kish, Bockenheim. The persian Restaurant "Kish" is full of culinary suprises. It also tries a different approach for the lunch buffet: Pay what you want. The authentic and well-kept restaurant shines with good service and high-quality, fresh dishes. There are some real treats on the menu, like lamb, poultry- and beef-spit, a variety of vegetables or different types of oriental rice. A persian dessert sweetens the day. The combination of "Pay what you want" and the good food is what makes this place special."

Pappnase & Co. GmbH

Permanently Closed

"Pappnase, Bockenheim. There is a lot to discover and to wonder about in the "Pappnase". The store has a unique offering in Frankfurt and is known citywide. For over 30 years, Pappnase offers a loving sortiment of products of big brands and small niche-products. You'll find almost everything from artistic and juggling equipment to joke articles and magic goods, aswell as seasonal items for halloween or carnival. Galerie Hake

Art gallery · MessegelÀnde

"Galerie Hake, Bockenheim. It takes a little effort to find this cozy, idyllic place. In the heart of Leipziger Straße, right beside street number 35, there is a small entrance leading to a low-paced place with a charming atmosphere. Galerie Hake is primarily known for a wide variety of picture frames. Besides that, they offer lots of cute accessories for your home, exceptional postcards, art prints, fashion for kids, wedding dresses and smokings. On top, they feature a great Bistro, where coffee, sandwiches, and soups are being served. On Saturdays there is also breakfast."

Bader's fish deli

Fish store · MessegelÀnde

"Bader's Fisch Deli, Bockenheim. For people who love fish like no other, "Bader's Fisch-Deli" in the middle of Leipziger Straße is the place to go. It doesn't matter if you're in for a bread roll with fish to go or some serious lunch – variety of choice and quality are always top notch! The ambiente is simple but totally OK for a cold or hot fish snack."

KĂ€seladen Leipziger

Cheese shop · MessegelÀnde

"KĂ€seladen Leipziger, Bockenheim. You're into cheese? In all of it's varieties and flavors? Then this is your place! The range of different cheese is astonishing: goat cheese, sheep's cheese, hard cheese, soft cheese and homemade cream cheese to name only a few. To complete your visit, be sure to ask for proper wine or (fig-) mustard to go along to your cheese of choice. We also absolutely recommend the various, also homemade, quiche."

Café Albatros

Permanently Closed

"CafĂ© Albatros, Bockenheim. Nice and cozy place to get some traditional Frankfurt food, like "GrĂŒne Soße" or other mostly vegetarian dishes. Especially in summer CafĂ© Albatros invites to relax in their smoothly garden area in student atmosphere. The menu of the day contains mostly traditional dishes, but sometimes there are international treats aswell. Good food, a nice atmosphere and moderate prices are the main reasons why CafĂ© Albatros is always quite busy."

Da Cimino

Pizza restaurant · MessegelÀnde

"Da Cimino, Bockenheim. The oldest and for most people probably the best pizzeria in Frankfurt. Enjoy a first-class pizza, made in a wood oven according to traditional recipe. The variety of different pizza is astonishing and all other dishes, like pasta and italian specialties are splendid as well. Nothing for a fancy candle light dinner with your feyonce though, but what you'll get is great food for moderate (almost little) money. If you going to visit Bockenheim, Da Cimino is a must!"

Mona Lisa

Bar · Romerberg

"Mona Lisa Bar, Innenstadt. Maria and Patrycja welcome every one of their guests as though they had been friends for years. And indeed, this charming bar is populated by regulars, who have been meeting here for a glass of bubbly, discussions or the weekly ‘Stammtisch’ for decades. The place is particularly popular with journalists and the local creative crowd. A trip to Mona Lisa is always rewarding, especially when it includes fascinating anecdotes and a glass of red vodka (with cherries) courtesy of the two landladies."

MARGARETE

Restaurant · Romerberg

"Margarete, Innenstadt. The restaurant Margarete tempts Frankfurt and its visitors with delicious old favourites and newly interpreted dishes. From lunchtime to late into the night, whether for coffee and cake, a meal with friends or a business dinner, Margarete caters for it all. It’s special twist: the intimate area in the back of the restaurant allows guests – thanks to its adjustable furnishings – to create their own private rooms. The interior at Margarete indicates a true love for detail, is elegant, but also homey."

"CafĂ©bar im Kunstverein, Innenstadt. Within the Steinernes Haus with access to the Kunstverein the CafĂ©bar im Kunstverein tempts visitors with a pleasant atmosphere, tradition-steeped architecture, and first and foremost with tasteful delicacies, which are lovingly prepared with fresh ingredients from the local market. Whether one is enjoying one’s morning coffee indoors while admiring the stylistically adventurous interior, indulging in a hot meal, or an after-work drink in the summer garden, the staff at the CafĂ©bar always welcomes its guests with hearty Hessian hospitality."

Frankfurter Kunstverein

Art museum · Romerberg

"Frankfurter Kunstverein, Innenstadt. At the heart of the city in the Steinernes Haus and its annex the Frankfurter Kunstverein presents extraordinary contemporary art across its 900 m2 of exhibition space. What’s makes this space so unusual is that the building’s rooms, which are given their unique shape by their large windows, adapt individually to the art displayed within them, and transform their entire appearance cyclically. Only the architectural basics remain constant, the feeling of the space is in perpetual flux. Depicted here is among others the exhibition ‘Single Mother Songs from the End of Nature’ by Melanie Bonajo."

Buchhandlung Walther König

Book store · Romerberg

"Buchhandlung Walther König, Innenstadt. The stock at this bookstore is made up exclusively of cultural publications with a focus on architecture, art and design, as well as photography and interior design. The Frankfurt branch of Walther König is located directly next to the Kleinmarkthalle and will tempt any booklover with its extensive selection. Time flies when you’re browsing here, so be sure to allocate plenty for this visit."

Zeil 90

Building · Romerberg

"Farmers Market at Konstablerwache, Innenstadt. Right at the heart of Frankfurt, on its most famous shopping mile – the Zeil, is the Konstablerwache. This is where the locals flock on Thursdays and Sundays to buy fresh groceries, flowers and enjoy a chat over a meal. The culinary desires of the market’s visitors are catered to throughout the day, and the delicious regional, national and international delicacies on offer will delight any foodie’s taste buds."

"Kleinmarkthalle, Innenstadt. In the market hall Kleinmarkthalle Frankfurters gather for a chat over a glass of wine, for a meal or a pleasant browse. The Hessian speciality of ‘Grie Soß’, a local herb sauce, comes as highly recommended as many other national and international delicacies, which promise to whet your appetite at this locale. After indulging in the Kleinmarkthalle’s delicatessen, why not brighten your stroll home with a lovely bouquet of flowers."

"The Holy Cross Brewing Society, Innenstadt. Carla, Mathias and their team at Holy Cross Brewing Society are turning coffee into an art form. The coffee, sourced from the best roasteries, is measured out by the milligram and brewed expertly by hand. On request, their brew may be accompanied, depending on the time of day, by organic porridge, homemade biscuits, cake and other little delicious treats."

Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

Art gallery · Romerberg

"Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Innenstadt. Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt offers up an unusual concept: On show are great artists alongside heretofore undiscovered talents, an entire spectrum from the modern period/modernism to contemporary art. There is something for everyone, for the old and the young – classically arranged or made accessible through an event series. On show are usually two exhibitions with current relevance, primed to stimulate conversation. The ‘Schirn’ is an institution, yet one with a progressive understanding of itself."

IIMORI Patisserie

Cafe · Romerberg

"Iimori, Innenstadt. Iimori accomplishes the exquisite feat of combining two very special cultural influences across its two floors: European baking and Asian cuisine. The café downstairs offers the finest French patisseries, while on the first floor owner Madame Iimori serves up delicious Japanese fare. Sit back, indulge and enjoy the cosy living room ambiance with your friends."
