Metzgerei Schmitz
Cafe · Cologne
"SCHMITZ Bar - Metzgerei - Salon, Belgisches Viertel. Schmitz is the best-known name in Cologne, respectively Belgisches Viertel – and the empire at Aachener Straße. Over the years, it turned into a real institution, once starting as a small hipster bar. The public might be an acquired taste of fanciness, but it’s fun people watching, not as snobby as promised and the very likable service and dishes are mostly praised high by everyone who’s visited.Atmosphere’s very serene – people know ordered food can possibly take up to 3 quarters waiting time, weekends are always busy – that may be so, but it wouldn’t be as successful as it is, if it didn’t work, right? To understand the SCHMITZ empire, here’s a list:BAR SCHMITZ | Brasserie - Restaurant - Glacier - CocktailbarMETZGEREI SCHMITZ | Patisserie - Café - TakeAway - CateringSALON SCHMITZ | Café - Lounge - Bar - ExhibitionsCOCO SCHMITZ | Disco - Boîte De Nuit - Concerts – Private PartiesThe BAR is nicely done up in Belgian Jugendstil, they have an astonishing range of sorbets, which is especially mind-blowing for people who suffer from lactose, *BECAUSE:* they have chocolate sorbet. Not *chocolate sorbet...* it's the most chocolaty chocolate sorbet on earth! The METZGEREI has been the oldest butcher shop in Cologne when it was still in use. In the glass counter, meat was replaced by cake and other delightfulness. Consume everything Metzgerei Schmitz is offering at any other Schmitz, when limited seats at Metzgerei are occupied. *BUT:* Pay drinks at the Bar or at the Salon (when you go there with food f.e. from Metzgerei). They have their running businesses per location. Got it? People get confused about it. Now you're well prepared for a visit. They serve breakfast from 9 and quiche, soups and salads all day – all evenly terrific. At SALON Schmitz, french Savoir Vivre meets Rhenish vitality for a tingling Liaison – interior is filled with danish design classics from the 50's & 60's mixed with antique german furnishing and traditional elements creating an unique ambience. Check for exhibitions that are regularly arranged here.Feel like moving your feet? To the basement, then! Show your dancing skills at COCO Schmitz in swanky dimmed atmosphere. For when you've had enough hustle and bustle, yet don't want to miss Schmitz taste, they offer another location for you, surprisingly: It's the café inside the [Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst,](http://www.museum-fuer-ostasiatische-kunst.de/Cafe) close to the park & pond [Aachener Weiher](https://www.google.de/maps/place/Aachener+Weiher/@50.935255,6.9251874,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x47bf251cfc91f961:0x9e61aa7f983d70a0!8m2!3d50.9352813!4d6.9279462) where you'll be able to let all the exciting happenings behind....confused by all the Schmitz, huh? Brüsseler Pl. 1
Building · Cologne
"Brüsseler, Belgisches Viertel. Try this and experience the probably purest taste of chicken in the area. This meal will make you smack your lips every time you remember it! Provided by a local and biological farmer from *Eifel,* which is about an hour away by car, there’s nothing left you could carp about. This place looks and indeed was once the typical *Kölsch-Kneipe,* which it is still transformed to on football evenings. Brüsseler got its patronage from the place that’s been there before, but you wouldn’t guess it: the football equipment is hidden behind lovely new interiors. The imposing, church-like windows decorate the room (and hide the TV’s when there’s no champions league and stuff), while the rest stays 'urig' (a german word that would be a combination of rustic and cozy) and still welcoming with a lot of wooden materials and dimmed light from beautifully picked designer-like lamps.Apart from Kölsch you could also order a recommendation of Brüsselers Gin variations in the late evening or try one of their fresh, homemade salads with your next chicken – they serve them in cute glasses. Will definitely convince you, we’re visiting Brüsseler mostly two times a week for lunch…"

SCHEE

"SCHEE, Belgisches Viertel. You enter a huge squared space with a high ceiling full of stylish items. You feel like entering one of those famous Swedish interior blogs. It is no wonder – it all started with the love for original designs and prints. At that time nearly nobody sold self-made prints in Germany – buying screen prints from all around the globe was quite difficult and annoying, due to delivery problems and customs issues. This was the starting point to print and sell their own works. Now they proudly expanded their selection up to 200 unique prints by diverse designers, illustrators and artists *(also online!).* Additionally you can find vases, cards, blankets, lamps – thus the prefect present for anybody and/or yourself. Every single piece is SCHEE (means beautiful/nice in *Kölsch*)!"

Gusto Antico
Italian restaurant · Cologne
"Gusto Antico, Ehrenfeld. Gusto Antico? Never heard? But this spot is really an insider tip if you want to eat super delicious and pretty genuine pizza and pasta served by a very chatty and kind guy from Napoli, Italy. Luciano and his wife Anna have this little restaurant on Vogelsanger Street in Ehrenfeld which has at first sight the charme of a diner at a campsite. But way of the mark. The pizza and pasta is great, very genuine from our point of view and not too expensive. Everything is freshly made on point - and there is a weekly changing lunch menu. We really recommend the Tagliatelle with Salmon or the Penne with Italian Salsiccia. And not to forget: There is enough fresh grated Parmesan for everyone. Always a pleasure to go there."

Biergarten Rathenauplatz Veedelstreff
Beer garden · Cologne
"Biergarten Rathenauplatz, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. Biergartens are the bomb. They’re a crowd pleaser on a sunny day. They’re great for day or night. They’re family friendly. They have cake and bratwurst. Coffee and beer. What’s not to like, right? This one specifically is conveniently located on Rathenauplatz, a small park to take a stroll across on your way somewhere or for the kids to swing and slide around on the playground."
Roonstraße Synagogue

"Roonstrasse Synagogue, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. Built in 1899, destroyed in 1938 and rebuilt in the 1950’s, the Roonstraße Synagogue is the center of the Jewish communities of Cologne. The neo-Romanesque building is a beautiful landmark for the area. You can take a tour of the Synagogue in German, just don't forget your kippa!"
Malz-Bierbrauerei Gerhard Fischenich
Brewpub · Cologne
"Gaststätte Gerhard Fischenich, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. Brand new to the neighbourhood (sort of), Gaststätte Gerhard Fischenich is the sister restaurant/brewery of [Haus Töller](http://www.onthegrid.city/cologne/kwartier-lataeng-rathenauviertel/haus-toeller/), located right across the street. The renovations worked to renew it to as close as possible to what it looked like in 1925. Outside are original gas street lanterns of that time. Bring the gang to drink beer standing at the bar or to bravely try out the house special, Guppes, which is goulash on a bed of coleslaw."
Habibi Köln
Lebanese restaurant · Cologne
"Habibi, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. When life has got you down, Habibi is the place to go. Bustling with life, this falafel & shawarma spot draws large hungry crowds almost everyday. Equipped with patience and an appetite, head down there to enjoy giant plates of assorted authentic Lebanese foods in the vintage movie poster plastered restaurant. The Barraka teller is the bomb for vegetarians who like halloumi and the shawarma is the way to go for meat eaters."
Haus Töller
Restaurant · Cologne
"Haus Töller, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. Walking into Haus Töller on a winter evening is a sweet feeling. Traditional to the core and packed with locals, this is the place to go to stuff your face with real Kölsch food, from pork roast to bratwurst. This place is awesome, but be warned about the giant portions and it not being very vegetarian friendly. Make sure to notice the Köbes, a typical local waiter who makes sure you constantly have a cold Kölsch beer sitting in front of you. Prost!"
The Schmitz at the Museum of East Asian Art
Permanently Closed
"Das Schmitz im Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. Das Schmitz im Museum is one piece of a lovely Cologne institution called Schmitz consisting of a café/take away counter, a lounge, a bar/restaurant, a nightclub and a lunch spot in a [museum](http://www.museum-fuer-ostasiatische-kunst.de/) - which is what we're recommending here. Schmitz is known for their great quiches and cakes, which makes it a perfect stop for a post-museum lunch or for kaffee und kuchen (a 3-5pm German tradition of having coffee and cake). The café is located facing the [Aachener Weiher](/aachener-weiher/) man-made lake and has a lovely terrace to enjoy some sun while you drink your cappuccino and reflect on East Asian art."

"Gentlemen Barber Clubs, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. The ultimate man cave. A stylish man cave. During working hours the place is open exclusively to men but from the moment the barber light goes out, ladies can join their mates for a nice whisky. Yeah, yeah, we know, a bit gender conforming but hey, we don’t make the rules. This is the place to go for a perfect haircut or to get that unruly beard under control. Join the club."

Bei Oma Kleinmann

"Bei Oma Kleinmann, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. Bei Oma Kleinmann is a small Cologne institution with a neighbourhood feel. Their specialty is schnitzel. Big schnitzels. Schnitzels with lemon...or mushroom sauce...or a fried egg. Yep, we're not kidding. Come with an appetite or after a few beers, trust us on this one. Walk in and give your name, grab a cold kölsch and wait patiently until a table frees up. Stick around for another nice cold Kölsch in the traditional ambiance after dinner - it's open until 1am. El Inca Restaurant
Peruvian restaurant · Cologne
"El Inca, Kwartier Latäng Rathenauviertel. El Inca offers a home away from home for South Americans in Cologne by offering incredible, authentic food in a slightly cheesy setting under street level, colourful cocktails included. From anticucho to lomo saltado, the variety of South American comfort food is a taste of Peru like none other in the city. Our go-to is a ceviche de pescado, a side of yuca fritta, with a flan to top it all off. Come and enjoy the quirky decor and latin music while you drink a pisco sour cocktail - it’s a guaranteed fun time."
