The Best Restaurants to Try in Carmel Valley - Eater San Diego

"The modern Mexican restaurant boasts a wrap-around patio and a menu of gluten-free seasonal favorites and tequila- and mezcal-based cocktails. Try the chile en nogada, a poblano filled with picadillo, almonds, and pomegranates, or the ahi tuna aquachile with avocado and passion fruit tostada. Pair with a Death by Margarita and/or Ultima Salmiana, a hibiscus-infused mezcal cocktail." - Helen I. Hwang

The chips and salsa sampler is delicious if you like trying different salsas. This was probably my favorite thing on their menu. It comes with four different types of salsa one is sweet and spicy (my favorite). Drinks were good. My paloma was refreshing and tasty. They had live music and overall it was a great atmosphere.

Finally!!! Carmel Valley has a Mexican restaurant with exellent food! The tacos at Maderos are amazing! I have had the veggie, lamb, carnitas, carne asada, pollo asado and brisket tacos. My wife and I love the veggie tacos and the brisket and lamb tacos! The seafood enchiladas are to die for. We also had the fresh sea bass wrapped in banana leaf which was on point. We have been back specifically for it a several times. My wife doesn't like fish. So, when she asks to go here to get the sea bass... you can trust it is good. Eating is currently outdoors. But they have plenty of space. My wife and I got to watch the local hot air ballons fly overhead while we enjoyed our dinner. One of the photos I posted is of strawberry filled churros. Delicious, with some kind of chocolate dipping sauce that put them over-the-top in the most enjoyable of ways. Not sure they are on the menu... so you might need to ask for them as a secret off menu item.

Google
Highly recommend. Laid back atmosphere, amazing food and amazing service. We’ve been getting into Mezcales and Tequilas, and rather than a cocktail (all of their cocktails look delicious), we asked if we could have tasting flights (available in the menu at the Encinitas location but not here). Our waitress (Ysabel) and Austin (asistant general manager) took the time to understand what flavors we liked, to match the flights to our tastes, and OMG did they deliver. I would also like to say that I mentioned in passing to Ysabel that I’d likely have to ask for the names of the Tequilas later, and sure enough the next time she came over she already had a post it note with the names. AMAZING! The food was pretty awesome as well. We had the ‘Torre de Marisco’, with a dozen oysters, scallop crudo, ceviche, aguachile, paired with the NY Strip special, that they’d recommended in addition to the seafood (sort of like an impromptu surf and turf). While everything was awesome, my wife and I fell in love with the aguachile. I ordered dessert (cajeta semifreddo, delicious) and they paired it with another amazing tequila (I asked Ysabel and Austin to surprise me and brought Arette Extra Añejo). TL:DR Highly recommended, memorable experience.

Google
It was my first time stopping by & I was doing arts and crafts before I came in and accidentally super glued my hand to their counter top. Over the course of the night I ordered many shots, would take a sip and wait for the staff to look away as I gradually dissolved the superglue with mezcal & tequila shots. Although I was literally stuck inside the bar, the staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. After a few hours, my hand was finally freed of the handcrafted marble countertop. Despite my freedom I stayed a while longer due to the friendly atmosphere and passionate staff. I highly recommend this bar to anyone seeking a quality cocktailing experience. Though I would suggest you would clear your hands for industrial adhesive beforehand.

Google
Great dining experience 👌🏽 The service was top notch with the server checking in regularly and making sure we had everything needed. The charcoal margarita and tacos are highly recommended. Will come here again for a Happy Hour

Google
Wonderful new restaurant in the Carmel Valley area of Del Mar. Cocktails were super tasty and well proportioned, and the house margarita is superb! Food was presented nicely, with the Grilled Octopus 🐙 being our favorite.

Ramy Z.

Google
To start, the staff was super friendly and provided an excellent service. We visited the place for the first time for lunch and enjoyed the outdoor seating (Covid only option). The food was ok and expensive, drinks were good. Attached picture is for a taco; a 1.5 by 0.25 inch grilled yellow tail! Don't mind paying more, but the portion needs to be reasonable. I'd probably go back for drinks only.

Google
Fantastic dining experience. Head chef Angel was remarkable as well as bar manager Mike. Food and beverage’s were one of a kind will definitely return.

Yelp
Very welcoming, great pricing ....Karla is excellent to let you know about the menu...

Yelp
Great restaurant with amazing fish tacos (for only $1.39), Pablo always treats us so we'll.

Yelp
This is a mixed review of El Pueblo. The fish tacos are super - you get your choice of corn or flour tortillas and the fish has a crunchy and light batter. Add any of 4 tasty salsas from the salsa bar and you've got a 5 star meal for $1.39 per taco - a real bargain. The chili rellano plate was disappointing- it was bland and needed a punch of flavor. Adding salsa to it helped bring it up from 2 star to 3 star. You order using kiosks and they bring the food out to you - yet their gratuity options are 20, 22 and 25%. I chose the custom option and gave them 18%. The decor is fun with a large bar in the center of the restaurant. I will go back to try other dishes.
google avatar

Bob F.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and well-priced food. Fish taco is always a steal here but don't skimp on their other tacos. Got a full fledged bar and multiple sport games playing.

Yelp
$1.39 for a fish taco. Available all day, every day, no limits. This is too good to be true, but guess what, it's true! With this price, it could be Taco Everyday, not just Taco Tuesday! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the sign on the entrance door advertising $1.39 per taco. I thought, maybe the quality is really cheap, or maybe the tacos are so tiny that you could finish it in 2 bites, or maybe the fish was so small you couldn't even see it. Wrong-wrong-wrong. The quality of the tacos were excellent. The tacos were large (not the small street taco size) and it took many bites to finish it. Also, it came with a big piece of battered fish. The tacos were available with corn or flour tortillas. I got one of each and both were equally good. There's also a self serve sauce bar where you can choose a variety of salsas and get some pickled vegetables like carrots, onions, and peppers. My wallet was very happy, and more importantly, my tummy was extremely satisfied! The 2 tacos were very filling. I will definitely be coming back whenever I'm craving fish tacos. This is a casual restaurant where you order and pay at the counter. They give you a number and deliver food to your table. Drinks are self-serve. For sports fans, they have a full bar with wide screen TVs, perfect for game nights! Parking is plentiful. Service is quick and friendly. The restaurant is clean and spacious, with plenty of tables inside and outside on the covered patio.
google avatar

Maggie O.

Yelp
A friend recommended we try this place since they have $1.39 fish tacos everyday and it was great! You order yourself at the kiosk at the front and grab a number, you then find a table and they bring the food to you. For $1.39 the tacos aren't bad at all and are pretty worth! You can also add a sauce for free on the side and there is a salsa bar as well. It's our favorite place to come here late night when we are craving a snack!

Yelp
Ordering was fairly easy, though the process becomes clearer once you take a moment to watch how it works. The only interaction with the staff is when they bring out your food; they seemed friendly, but we didn't really have any meaningful engagement. Inside, the music was extremely loud, so we chose to sit outside. Fortunately, the heaters kept the patio warm and comfortable, even on a rainy day. The flautas were enjoyable, and the nachos were decent, though the chicken had an unusual seasoning that didn't quite work for us. Overall, while there were some positives, the experience didn't quite hit the mark--and we likely won't be returning.

Yelp
Amazing as usual. I've been going to the Del Mar location for the past 2~ years, and recently switched to this location. Never fails to deliver exceptional quality tacos at an extremely hard to beat price. Consistency is the name of the game, and this place knocks that straight out of the park. Great service and lots of seating. During peak hours like Friday nights though, there will be trouble finding a seat. But that just goes to show how many people appreciate their tasty food! Interior is quite fancy with a bar in the center of restaurant.

Yelp
Located in a prime corner spot of the bustling Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch, El Pueblo provides incredible value in the form of their unbeatable $1 fish tacos, served everyday. I'm amazed they can offer this menu item in the thick of a a new high end neighborhood in Carmel Valley. Service is order at the counter then they bring the food to your table number. Salsas and drinks are self serve. They provide free carrots as well which is incredible especially for Carmel Valley. The interior is modern, clean with plenty of seating. Outdoor patio area is great for sitting as well, with a mix of large and small tables. We opted to sit outside since we had a dog with our friend group. I ordered 2 fish tacos which were very well done, crispy flavorful fish with a generous amount of coleslaw. Seriously the best deal in SD for fish tacos. I also ordered a California burrito which was well done with a good mix of meat rice and salsa.

Yelp
YUM! Popped in here on a recommendation from a friend who lives in the area to grab dinner on my way home and man the carne asada burrito HIT! 10/10 delicious and debated going back the next day for the exact same order. This place was BUSTLING on a Saturday night as they were play a sports game (don't come at me I can't remember which game it was). It was quite noisy but lively and fun at the same time. Despite the packed restaurant all of the employees from the bartender who took my order to the gentleman who bagged it up were all super friendly and thoughtful. As I was walking out of the restaurant one of the employees came running after me because they forgot to bag my chips and salsa order which to me showed a thoughtful and extra level of effort to recognize and catch a mistake. I'd 100% eat here again.

Yelp
I have been to the original El Pueblo on Via de la Valle so it was time to try the Pacific Highlands Ranch location. Same great prices! Same great food. I like to get the fish tacos $1.39 each. Hard to beat that price everyday of the week. The corn tortillas at this location are thinner and less chewy. I preferred these to the other location. For ambiance I also preferred this location. Nice size indoor and outdoor seating. More room to move around. Lot of big tvs to watch a game. I could see have a get together on the patio with friends. The staff is very nice and helpful. I had questions and the staff got the manager for me with her email address so I could follow up about a future order. I will be back with my kids who enjoy their CA burrito and Carne Asada quesadilla.

Yelp
Very fast, prompt service, server and management Myles came to check on everyone. The food came out so fast I was only a few sips in on my michelada and it was already out on my table. The carne asada fries were delicious and just the perfect amount and the michelada was excellent. This will be my go to spot for food and drinks when I'm on this side of town.

Yelp
I don't know who needs to hear this, but for fish tacos that are under two dollars that are a great size and amazing flavors. You have to come here. If you think about the prices of every food going up everywhere, you have to understand that this is a gem in the rough. The tacos were battered well with enough meat inside of them to be substantial and wrapped into corn tortillas made for a great meal. We got chips and guac, which were more than five tacos worth but I think their sale strategy works because you order the cheapest fish tacos ever but you also get a bunch of other add-ons that cost extra money like a low budget airline. Service was good and quick. They did mix up one of our orders, but they quickly rectified it. It's a great spot in Pacific Highlands with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating.

Yelp
This place is definitely a must! The happy hour makes this place a great place to be for huge parties for a cheap meal. I came here twice this week already with parties of 16 and a party of 11 the other day. This restaurant is highly recommend for group dining. The alcohol has been delicious from the margaritas, michelada, and other mixed drinks. There are a lot of options on the menu. The salsa bar is open to everyone to get however many sauces you may please. The soda machine is Coca-Cola products. The bathroom is divided between male and female. The bar is conveniently in the middle of the restaurant. The food itself is tasty, but it is not the best Mexican food in San Diego. However, it does get the job done as the meat is seasoned really well. The portions are perfect for me and I definitely feel that people get a bang for their buck. I will come back for happy hour again. I highly recommend for sports fans to come here to watch for games. The music selection is catered to 90's-2000's generation so I can see this as a vibe. The desert selection looks tasty. Also 10/10 for the buñuelos!

Yelp
Visited 29/2025 This is the second restaurant of this chain I've visited. The Del Mar store was Fantastic so I decided to come here this time. It didn't disappoint. The $1.29 Fish Tacos are Perfect and A super deal for the price. The Lengua Tacos are the best I've ever had. Seasoned Perfectly. They got it right. These are not your typical Street Sized Tacos but Are Full sized tacos on Fresh Hand Made Corn Tortillas made fresh daily. So Tasty and two tortillas on each taco. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Lots of seating inside and on the nice cool Patio. There is a nice full service Bar to wash everything down. Very much the visit.

Yelp
Really fun atmosphere and great food. Recommend the tacos or nachos and Margs! The staff is really helpful and you get you food quickly. If you're on a budget happy hour is all day and fish tacos are always $1.39. Wow
google avatar

Hyun Y.

Yelp
Great affordable fish tacos here! Not only that the place is clean, service was good, and they also have many other Mexican food items you can choose from. They also serve fried sweet chips that are dessert and we really enjoyed them. The people working there gave a tip of having them with a nice cup of coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Paid by card. El Pueblo is located on the street and offers some street parking and there's a nearby parking structure. I went on a Friday and it was packed! You seat yourself and it took a while to find a place to sit. Some of my party found seating and saved the tables, while other people in the party went in line to order. (You stand in 2 different lines to order: 1 for food and 1 for drinks). After you order and pay, you sit down and the servers bring the food to you. The food was soooo good and the prices were cheap! We ordered fish tacos, chips, chicken torta, lengua tacos, kids quesadilla, and bean and cheese burrito. We also got some margaritas. I would definitely recommend this place and will go back.
google avatar

Dana R.

Yelp
My family loves this place mainly because of their fish taco specials. Those tacos are so good and the price cannot be beat. We usually get an order of chips and guacamole that is okay, not the best. Great beer selection. Parking is never a problem. Great place for kids too
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Love this place! Bartenders are fun! The food is great! Myles is the best general manager ever!!
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Had the carne asada fries which were delicious. Went on Sunday during happy hour. Great ambience.
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for a solid happy hour? This place. Looking for a place to watch the game with great grub and drinks? This place. Looking for a family friendly birthday dinner spot? This place. Looking for girls night out? This place. Shout out to their bartender Brittany for making such creative signature cocktails. Shout out to all the staff for hot, fresh, delicious food and great hospitality.

Yelp
We dropped by here on a whim. We live nearby and realized we had never tried this place. Parked in front of it to hit the UPS store often! Food in the area is generally good. That being said, we were very surprised by the food quality! The tortilla quality is noticeably better than other places in the area. The open feel of the restaurant is ver welcoming. The people who work here are very friendly too. My wife is not a fan of Mexican food but this place won her over. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Norbert K.

Yelp
We came here for fish tacos for lunch. The location in Pacific Highlands Village is great with plenty of parking. There are indoor and patio tables, as well seats around the bar, which is the central feature of the restaurant. You order from a kiosk on the end of the bar, and a server brings food and drinks to your table. Overall service was very good. Ah, yes, the Fish Tacos (5/5 $1.59 each). They're among the best I have ever had. The fish was fried perfectly and not overcooked. Great value. We have to come back for Happy Hour!

Elijah K.

Yelp
On that fish taco grind. Food rolled out pretty quick, and it tasted great, would come back.
google avatar

JR N.

Yelp
We were in town for December Nights and our family recommended this place. Myles, the store manager took our order, served us and delivered the most delicious tacos & enchiladas! We asked him to come to Orange County! We will definitely come back! Thanks Myle for your hospitality!
google avatar

JiaJia T.

Yelp
Best value happy hour in this area. Margaritas are strong and beautifully presented. Fish tacos are decent but at $1.39 (prices slowly creeping up) you really can't complain. Service is fast and super friendly but not intrusive. You really can't go wrong with the happy hour here!
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
Amazing service where you feel like family. Lil kevin, abraham, pablo how is make us feel like this is our second home. Love the paloma and pine picante !
google avatar

Shalini G.

Yelp
I am so very happy to report that El Pueblo is still the place to be in Carmel Valley. Prices are creeping up a bit but not as much as egg prices! Happy Hour time is really the best time to come and it's almost always happy hour. EVERY DAY 2 pm - 7 pm + 11 pm - 2 am. Last night we arrived at 7:15 pm...boo we missed happy hour. all good..still had $1.29 fish tacos and a margarita on special $16 for a double Anillos Mezcal Margarita..not bad! Service is pretty darn good. there are quite a few new faces here with some old school one's also. The place is packed with people. Same great decor on the walls and 2 outside patios. See you soon El Pueblo
google avatar

Demi M.

Yelp
Awesome food and atmosphere. Very friendly staff. Shout out to Myles the manager especially for excellent service. Would love to come back!
google avatar

Valerie W.

Yelp
LOVE the fish tacos here!! So fresh, affordable (at $1.29 but now $1.39 but I'm not complaining), and consistent. Their other food is also really good! The one place in Pacific Highlands Ranch that is open until midnight. Felix was super helpful!

nick h.

Yelp
As someone who has had California burritos in San Diego for over 30 years. I decided to try this just because I live near it. I can easily say was the worst burrito I've ever had. For $16. This was tiny. Had no meat. Barely any cheese. Pico was awful. Didn't come with guac or sour cream. Absolute garbage. My neighbors said it was bad. I had to try for myself. And they were correct. Never again.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh off the airplane, I was taken here for lunch. My people raved about some $1.29 fish tacos. "What in the world? What do you mean? How can this be? How good can a $1.29 fish taco be? They must be snack size!". So, you know those moments in foodie life where you eat a common dish like fish tacos and more often than not you walk away thinking "meh". You try really hard to convince yourself that it was good. Fish is one of those foods where you love it or hate it. I happen to LOVE fish so I can get a little picky. It's an ingredient that can be easily messed up. You know what I'm talking about, right? This wasn't one of those moments! First, the fish tacos are $1.29. What?!?! Second, they asked me if I want corn or flour tortilla. I get a choice?!?! Flour! Sold! Third, the tacos are normal size, no snacks about it! Fourth, the batter wasn't overpowering with "extra" to cover fish. Sometimes fish in tacos is lackluster or at worst fishy! But here, as an example of "best", flavorful and the fish pieces were fat! Every bite was a full fish bite all the way through devouring the end of each tortilla! There was no leftover tortilla without fish! Fifth, whatever sauce they used, it rounded out all the flavors in the tacos so well! Two tacos down and I am full! My belly is comforted. My palate is satisfied. My wallet wasn't drained. And sitting on the patio by the fire on a sunny but breezy day eating soft fish tacos with people I love was the best "hello vacation" I could ask for! Oh, and the staff were the kindest and most helpful ever! Don't miss this place! It's a good one! YAY and YOM!
google avatar

Crissy W.

Yelp
Still good but don't think I'll do take out here. I paid extra for guacamole and didn't get it. Also big warning, do not come at 4 pm on a Friday as the place felt like a Mexican High School Cafeteria as all the kids get out around that time and come here. I'll be back but will eat at the restaurant incase something is forgotten.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Phenomenal fish (battered) tacos at an unbeatable price. They come with finely sliced green cabbage and pico with a chipotle mayo sauce (not too heavy). We got an order of corn and an order of flour tortillas. The corn are yellow and come with two to a taco so they don't fall apart. These are not street sizes tacos! We got an order of chips also, thick sliced and fresh (tasted like house made). Great salsa bar with a good variety plus marinated carrots (my favorite). Good drink specials too. Indoor or outdoor seating. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
Great food Like that they are open early for there breakfast burritos Thank you Felix
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
I've been to this location for dinner multiple times - both dine-in and takeout and the times vary between a 5-10min wait. You can choose to order at kiosk or at the counter. There are a lot of tables both indoors and outdoors along with a bar. Overall a great place for cheap fish tacos (under $1.50 each!) Bonus: they have this deal every day, not just on Tuesdays.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
Having taken over the space formerly occupied by an upscale tequila bar and resto, this is definitely the nicest El Pueblo in this local counter-service chain, albeit the salsa bar could be kept cleaner! Loss leader fish tacos are a compelling draw, generously portioned and served piping hot. Other menu items are much pricier, of course - gotta make up the deficit somewhere! ;)
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
We love their $1.29 fish tacos! The tacos are big, you can choose flour or corn tortillas, and they come with cabbage and sauce. They also have a great salsa bar and spicy carrots! The carrots aren't overly spicy and are nice and soft. Overall, great value plus they have a full bar for those looking to drink.
google avatar

anita t.

Yelp
Very friendly service and fun ambiance. $1.29 fish tacos are actually really good. Liked that they have TVs for watching March madness. Music Kinda loud to hold a conversation but still fun. Salsa was good and although we just got the fish tacos, other food I saw at neighboring tables looked good. Easy to park on street or garage parking. Very crowded during happy hour so go early.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast burrito in town! I got carne asada and eggs burrito with guacamole and pico. They have an open sauce bar which is divine!!! All the sauces are good and the portion is huge! Parking is easy and the staff was nice. I would definitely come back here again.
google avatar

Shirley H.

Yelp
Fish tacos were delish and only 1.39! Best deal around! House margie was good too. I loved the carnitas tacos.
google avatar

Lynn R.

Yelp
The best tacos and margaritas. The employees are so nice and welcoming. Thank you for a great night E and Brittany are amazing and always make us feel welcome. Nate and Jason were so kind and brought our food out early. Tyler was helpful in getting our dessert delivered. Thank you for great food and service

Cullen G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere with very well priced delicious food. They always have good sports on and service is fast.
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
I couldn't believe the fish tacos were less than $2. Even more surprising, they were actually good I also got a carne asada taco which was my favorite . It had some good guacamole on top. You order at the counter and my food was ready within 5 minutes. I like the fact they have a salsa bar as well. It's a good fast option for Mexican food if you are in Village Center
google avatar

Yelp
This place was recommended by my son. So we drive up from UC to check it out. What hidden hidden gem. It s a true local s favorite. The fish tacos were amazing and so was the service. It was also nice to see local kids stop by after school to get a good fish taco instead of hanging out at one of the national fast food joint. We ll definitely be back again to support this restaurant and its staff!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
We had an awesome experience thanks to Joe at El Pueblo. He was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. And seriously, his margaritas are next level. Perfect balance, super refreshing. If you go, definitely ask for Joe and get one of his margaritas. Great service all around.

Yelp
I came here to order fish tacos for dinner. I heard from my co worker that lives from Rancho Bernardo ( a long drive if I may say so but she said it's worth the drive). I had 3 fish tacos . It was so good . My Son ate 4 . He liked it too. Meaty fish tacos. It's gonna be our go to place for a fish tacos from now on.
