Nestled in a grocery store in Japantown, this vibrant bakery serves up delectable coffee crunch and lemon cakes, perfect for a sweet treat with coffee.
"Only in Japantown can you find a bakery tucked inside a grocery store serving one of the best cakes in the city. Tom Yasukochi has been serving this coffee crunch cake since 1974. It isn’t Japanese at all but inspired by a cake from a local soda shop. It’s a sad story, but with a sweet ending: During WWII, the Yasukochis were sent away to a Japanese internment camp, but returned after. Tom graduated from Lowell High School in 1955 and eventually mastered his favorite childhood treat." - Dianne de Guzman, Becky Duffett
"The coffee crunch cake from Yasukochi’s Sweet Stop is San Francisco dessert royalty. Each slice of light, airy cake is topped with honeycomb-like candy that adds the iconic sticky, crunchy texture. It’s one of the fantastic baked goods coming out of this tiny spot—another is the assortment of roll cakes filled with lemon or strawberry cream. Pay attention to those, because the sponge cake is some of the fluffiest in town. This bakery operates out of Super Mira Market, and is cash only, so come prepared." - julia chen 1, lani conway
"Dish: Coffee crunch cake The coffee crunch cake from Yasukochi’s Sweet Stop is a local treasure. The tiny cash-only Japantown bakery has been around for almost five decades inside Super Mira Market, and still draws lines. Snag a slice (or seven) of the layered sponge cake coated in candy the texture of sticky honeycomb, with fluffy layers of whipped cream. It’s light, not too sweet, and should be on the to-eat list of every San Franciscan. Getting here when they open is the move (they sell out of the cake most days), and you’ll also have first dibs on their fantastic roll cakes with lemon or strawberry cream.
