"Founded in 1982 by local poet Rubén Derlis, this café once served as a meeting place for writers, artists, and left-leaning thinkers anxious to speak freely after years of fear and oppression under Argentina’s late-’70s military dictatorships. Order the picada , a charcuterie and cheese sampler; lubricate with a traditional local-favorite drink like a Fernet-and-Coke or a Cynar, the tangy artichoke liqueur mixed with pomelo, a sour, grapefruit-flavored soda. Wood paneling and exposed brick, walls covered in photographs, and shelves packed with antique objets make La Poesía an inviting space to linger over a book from the lending library or listen to the live tango music played on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Great spot to see interesting decor inside. We loved the ambiance and the playlist was pretty good too (super random for a Wednesday morning, but great!) The omelette selection was good and came in a big portion size. The cappuccino came with sparkling water, though I could’ve had 3 or 4 since it was tiny 😆 The limonada con gingibre y menta was one of the best I’ve had in Buenos Aires. The mini tortilla was a great size for one person. The brownie came cold but had an almost mousse like texture and was rich and delicious. Wish they had a with or without but option, but otherwise it was nice. Highly recommend!

Go here if you want to sample the old Argentina. This is where famous poet Zorilla de San Martin wrote “Tabare”. Be sure to get the “La Poesia platter”! This place serves great food and wine and is always bustling with interesting people and a good atmosphere. Plus its good value, would recommend any tourist to come, and be sure to visit the Conventa Santa Domingo nearby before coming to pay your respects to one of Argentina’s founding fathers.

Google
LOVED IT. I liked that the breakfast had options for savory (eggs, ham and cheese medialunas, etc) and all the sweets you could expect at a cafe in BsAs. The interior is really neat, straight out of history. There is a lot of seating, too. We are here for breakfast a couple times on our trip.

Google
La Poesía is a gem among the “Bares Notables” of Buenos Aires! This small corner café offers a delightful atmosphere that feels both historic and cozy. We had a lovely experience here—the service was attentive and friendly, and the prices were very reasonable. The highlight for us was the salami sandwich, which was absolutely delicious. A perfect spot to soak in the charm of the city while enjoying great food. Highly recommend!

Google
“Bar notable”… ok. Stay away. The breakfast was what a low-rate hotel would serve you. Bready medialunas, the granola was kids’ flavored yoghurt, the coffee was bad and served twice because they got it wrong the first time…. Bad the second time too. Very bad experience. I really regret leaving any money here. Beautiful and quaint place but food/beverages are terrible.

Google
Love this place for breakfast! This was our first breakfast spot & we loved it so much that we came back a few days later. Can’t go wrong with the menu. The fresh squeezed orange juice is SO good. The staff is friendly. Great location and cute interior

Google
This is a great little place to take a coffee and soak in some local history. Lovely coffee and medialunas. For lunch don’t miss the turkey sandwich. Heavenly! The staff is friendly. Service is slow but it is still and really nice experience

Google
Little disappointed, we went to eat here as we noticed it’s normally very busy. we are tourists and we were sitting for a while before asking ourselves for the menu from the waitress and got an eye roll for not speaking Spanish. Continued to wait another 15-20min during this time decided to leave and eat somewhere else then she finally deciding to serve us. We still left and I believe the food would be good but if you don’t speak Spanish not the greatest in being patient.

Yelp
Bohemian restaurant located in charming San Telmo district. It offers a great artsy atmosphere. The homemade bread and charcuterie board were delicious. Definitely a place to visit

Yelp
We were referred here by a BA local and were not disappointed!! It's a great local spot with an extensive menu, very authentic and full of locals. Cafe environment, could spend a whole afternoon here just reading, working, or chatting with a friend. You MUST order the La Poesía coffee cocktail it was amazing. We also got a picada and an ensalada Rusa and just noshed out on meat, cheese and bread

Yelp
This little cafe shines in quality of food and ambience too. The menu is like a book! It's located in a little place where a famous writer penned a poem in the 1800s. I wish I had taken a photo of the plaque. It's in a renovated old building right in the middle of San Telmo but off the beaten path from the Mercado. We came here three times and had breakfast (inexpensive and awesome! breakfast "number 2" with scrambled eggs, bacon, bread, juice, and latte) and dinner (Dinner was salads, and homemade pasta with various sauces). Food was fresh, and good. The walls are decorated with all manner of great art and artistic displays. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
An old, classic San Telmo cafe/bar with all the character of the neighborhood. The space is beautiful. The architecture itself is a testament to the earlier days of the city, and a multitude of old and new pictures and news articles on the walls establish its history. It's hard to describe in words, but every piece fits together, from the piano, clocks, and hanging meats to the authentic San Telmo theme of the menus and the signs. This is also one of few spots that actually cook breakfast. If you're a morning carnivore like me, you can come here (after 9am) for eggs and bacon or for a surprisingly perfectly round omelette. I look forward to exploring the menu further in future visits. Note: The first time I came here for dinner, my opinion quickly dropped from 5 stars to 4 stars. The steak was very disappointing. Still an awesome space.

Yelp
Nice little café with good food & coffee and a friendly service. The prices are similar to other places in the area. I had a sandwich with brie, black olives, sun-dried tomatoes and salad. I didn't like the bread, it was a very soft baguette. My husband ordered a Hamburger Café Poesia style with 300gr patty, ham and stir-fried egg and some fried potatoes. He like the burger very much. Unfortunately one of the women toilets didn't work and the toilet was smelling like that. Thus overall 4 stars.

Renee M.

Yelp
Loved this little bar. Like everywhere in BA service is slow but since the music is good and the snacks we ordered tasty we couldn't be bothered. Loved that they had such a big selection of snacking options which I hadn't seen on many bar menus before.

Yelp
This is a very late review because well I'm lazy. I visited BA about a year and few months and loved the area of San Telmo. A lot of quiet streets and small local shops/restaurants. It was my favorite neighborhood. Anyway, Cafe La Poesia was a delight, charming and quaint cofee shop. There were a lot of locals. At first the lady that helped me was not very nice, once I explained I was foreign visitor. She was understanding and helpful. I guess she was confused with my Mexi Spanish. We had a bottle of wine that was cheap around $8 dollars with some dessert. Sat on the overlooking that has all these old school pictures. The scene is serene the wine was delicious for the price.

Yelp
I never write negative reviews but the food was atrocious, cool location to have a beer but horrendous food ; the moral of the story is just have the beer , it is difficult to find bad food in BA so drink up only !

David P.

Yelp
Cafe La Poesia is okay. You will get the standard Buenos Aires cafe menu, the service is "good" but nothing beyond that, and the food is "fine," but nothing to write home about. It won't be a BAD experience, and it is very reasonably priced, but you can find something as good or better by strolling into almost any place in the neighborhood.

Yelp
We only had drinks outside. The Service is very friendly. They are generous with the Fernet portion for a Fernet Coca. Very nice to sit outside but also the inside of the cafe is lovely with lots of charm!!

Yelp
Food was so so - but place itself is super cute. Great little place to have some vino.

Brandy L.

Yelp
This cafe takes you back in time, the ambiance is just perfect for a quiet breakfast. They have a menu in English with 5 great breakfast choices. For around $5usd you can get bacon, eggs, a basket of toast with jam and butter, a latte and fresh squeezed orange juice. You can't beat that.

Mahin J.

Yelp
The place is OK. We went here for coffee/tea and medialunas, which were decent. The ambiance and service were good. FYI the teas aren't loose leaf. Every drink came with three medialunas, which was appreciated.

Erin M.

Yelp
Really atmospheric place, and they have a small upstairs room that is inspiring for getting some writing done, but beware: there is not one outlet anywhere in this place. Come with a charged laptop and backup battery if you want to settle in! Their WiFi is also really slow. It's better to use this as a reading spot than a writing one, actually. Really cool menu, though.

Yelp
My many co-workers and I passed by this place all the time and really wanted to give it a try. I cannot give this place a good review because Our Party of Five were sat at a table upstairs and our waitress asked if we will be having dinner..we said we just had dinner but we would like drinks and maybe some appetizers or dessert they seem to have a lot of desserts) we also had a translator in our group.. then waited a very long time for a waitress who came and took more orders from the people next to us who had already been served and completely ignored us.. after another 20 minutes or more of not even taking a drink order we decided to leave and go somewhere else.. I don't know the waitresses name because we never saw her again but she was a not so friendly slightly larger girl with tattoos.. that's all I can remember about her.

Yelp
This place is quaint and inviting, with an old world charm. The service is attentive, charming atmosphere, with really warm staff. We came on a Monday morning at 8:30 and it was bustling with people having their coffee before work. We ordered cafe and an assortment of medialunas, all fresh and incredible. My favorites were the butter medialunas and my date loved the dulce de leche. Will come back!

Yelp
Last night, at the recommendation of our tour director, we arrived at Café La Poesie about 7:00PM. We sat at a table to figure out what we wanted to order from the large menu. That's when the problem occurred. Although we were sitting next to the servers area, we waited and waited for someone to approach us to take our order. Many times staff walked by us but we were NEVER approached or asked for our order. Drinks were not even offered. We travel a lot and this has never happened to us before. We finally left after sitting for over 15 minutes. If this was because we were obvious English speakers with a Spanish menu or if this is typical service from this café, they need to re-evaluate the meaning of service or train their staff better. A horrible way to start an evening out for us.

Jamie H.

Yelp
We'd been walking around San Telmo looking for somewhere to grab lunch for around 45 minutes when we stumbled across this place with a hunger and thirst to satisfy. Unfortunately it did neither. My prosciutto and cheese sandwich was dry as a bone and the beer I had to watch it down started off well. That was before the nice sweet taste quickly turned into a twang that made you want to leave the beer and bolt for the nearest bottle of Quilmes. The small saving grace was the nice service from our waitress. Unless the food improves markedly we won't be recommending it to friends.

Meltem G.

Yelp
We had an afternoon stop at this cafe. Shared a picada (mixed plate of cheese and ham) and drank wine. We sat outside and watched the people go by. It was a very laid back and leisurely afternoon. Yes, the service is a bit slow, but the staff is very kind and friendly. We are definitely thinking of going back if we ever make it to Buenos Aires again.

Susana M.

Yelp
I spent 7 days in Buenos Aires and this is the best place to eat! Friendly staff, cool restaurant and I would recommend trying the #2 breakfast order.

Erina R.

Yelp
We shared a mixed plate and water.... while there was ample food on the plate (meats, olives, tortilla and cheese) and served nicely, not all the food tasted fresh unfortunately (bread and tortilla). Waiter was attentive. Not bad though and good value for money.

Michael F.

Yelp
Very nice eclectic place. I didn't try the food but it looked amazing. They have their own beer on tap but it has no names. Only Blonde, Black, and Red. Great place to go on Sunday afternoon of attending the San Telmo market. Just a block over on the corner of Chile and General Simon Bolivar. Beers are so so, but I really like the atmosphere.

Lil L.

Yelp
We would like to preface that we are American Tourists here on vacation. The hostel we are staying at recommended this café for breakfast. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious and the coffee awesome. The atmosphere was old European style. Service is slow but we are noticing that is an Argentinian trend to just relax and enjoy the food and atmosphere. We were served freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh homemade bread. Yum. I had a delish cheese omelette and my spouse toast with cream cheese and jam. Will probably end up back there again before we leave. Enjoy!!

Andre B.

Yelp
Very average quality food but large amounts. Bit overpriced. The service was mediocre as well. Very much like your classic Parisen cafe, small and cozy but full restaurant menu. Probably a fun place to hang to watch a soccer match.
