"Mochi donuts are everywhere now, but Alimama in Chinatown was one of the first spots where you could get these crispy, chewy treats in NYC—and we think they’re still the best. The donuts are extremely consistent, and the flavors tend to be modern takes on Asian-inspired flavors, like roasted black sesame, and matcha. While you're here, get the boba-filled cream puff: It's a stunt food, sure, but one that actually tastes good. The same goes for their very pretty layered drinks. " - Carina Finn
"Known for its trendy desserts and fruity drinks, Alimama Tea opened in Manhattan’s Chinatown in February 2018. It’s the first shop in New York City to offer Japanese-style mochi donuts. Janie Wang, a Lower East Side native with gluten intolerance, was inspired to open the cafe because she found there were insufficient offerings for people with the same dietary restrictions. So it’s no surprise that most of the items on the menu are either gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan. The lychee rose drink and royal milk tea with mini boba are worth ordering." - Anna Huang, Chloe Chan
"Mochi doughnuts are all over the city now, but Alimama was one of the first to carry the dense and chewy hybrid treat, and remains one of the best. Start with the creme brulee or matcha doughnuts, and eat immediately while still hot. There’s nothing stickier, stretchier, and more fun to split after a night out with friends. Alimama also carries a variety of cream puffs, including one filled with mini boba for those looking for a flufflier dessert." - John Tsung, Liza de Guia
"Terrific matcha mochi donuts and boba milk tea cream puffs. Their bite-size munchkin donut holes are made to order and served piping hot. 89A Bayard St." - Grace Young
