Urban Chestnut Midtown Brewery and Biergarten
Brewery · Midtown
"Urban Chestnut Brewing Company, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Chunky wooden banquette tables. Massive steel tanks. Tons on craft beer options flowing from the taps (most of which you won’t be able to pronounce –what the heck is a Gewasserschutz). Grab a group of buddies and head to the Grove’s most boisterous tasting room for a beer-filled afternoon. With so many choices, don’t be afraid to ask the bartender for descriptions, recommendations and even a taste here or there. The lines can seem daunting, but the bar staff works hard to keep your glass full. And don’t worry, Urban Chestnut’s full kitchen offers a selection of snacks, sandwiches and German fare that is sure to soak up the suds. Operating as a true bierhall, the communal seating, energetic atmosphere and frequent events guarantees that you’ll have a good time."

Southern
Temporarily Closed
"Southern, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Although Southern offers much more than classic fried chicken, their Nashville-style birds are the trick that draws you in then keeps you coming back for seconds. And thirds. Chef Rick Lewis’ has nestled his coop along Olive Blvd. and is open to serve hot lunches Wednesday through Sunday (bummer: they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). Best thing about their Nashville hot chicken? It’s oh-so-juicy. Worst thing? If you try to be a badass and order the Cluckin’ Hot style, it’ll likely burn your face off (don’t say we didn’t warn you). We fancy ourselves hot sauce savvy, but we’d stick with the mild if this is your first time. The best bang for your buck is the four-piece tender meal –delicious chicken, TWO killer sides, a slide of bread and pickles. Top it off with a local soda and your lunch is sure to be fire."

SLU Dog Park & Sculpture Garden
Park · Covenant Blu
"SLU Dog Park & Sculpture Garden, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Finding a grassy spot to relax in the city is no easy task. Finding one where you can let your dog run free and pee on art is nearly impossible. Luckily, if you’ve got a creative pooch that’s down to run wild, St. Louis University has you covered. Ellen Clark Sculpture Park is a fenced-in gem right in the heart of midtown. Two and four-legged visitors alike can enjoy the massive sculptures placed throughout a lush green dog park. There are plenty of benches for the humans, water fountains and bowls throughout, plus a super handy poop bag dispenser. And if you and your furry best friend aren’t fans of notoriously hot Midwest summer days, the sculptures are illuminated at night. Did we mention this colorful park is completely free and open to all? What a treat!"

Retreat Gastropub
Gastropub · Central West End
"Retreat Gastropub, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. A neighborhood gem in the middle of the booming bioscience and technology scene that is the Cortex District, Retreat Gastropub offers a comfortable and approachable atmosphere for the creative minds next door. Serving up craft cocktails and beer alongside a fresh and simple menu, the staff welcomes you to fuel up or decompress at your own pace. Stand outs include a variety of house-made shrub cocktails, farmhouse burger and a sinful poutine. And the majority of the options are made from scratch and on-site, such as their signature artisanal ketchup. Vegetarian options are plentiful as well. But plan ahead –it gets busy during the weekday lunch rush, and they don’t take reservations. So if you dig Edison bulbs, wood-top tables and a down-home pub grub, stop on by."

Triumph Grill
Permanently Closed
"Triumph Grill, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. The Mother Road (aka Route 66) once passed through St. Louis, bringing with it a love of travel for travel’s sake. Enter the Triumph Grill, a restaurant complex (along with the Moto Museum and Moto Europa Triumph/Ducati dealership) as different from a biker bar as “motorcycling” is from being part of a biker gang. The Triumph Grill features a blend of thoughtful incorporation of motorcycle culture: vintage advertising on the walls, parts and pieces of bikes as décor and lighting fixtures, and a private room for events and meetings with two vintage bikes racing across the ceiling. It would be an excellent place to host clients for lunch or dinner, and has an event space to accommodate up to 50 people for standing cocktail parties. Some menu items are whimsically named after motorcycles: the Monster, the Scrambler, the Panigale. The tempura asparagus was a delightful appetizer to share, and they have a full bar to accommodate any happy hour event."

Small Batch Whiskey & Fare
Vegetarian restaurant · Midtown
"Small Batch, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Owner David Bailey knows a thing or two about creating unique, popular dining destinations (think Bailey’s Range, Rooster, Bridge Tap House), and Small Batch is no exception. Whiskey bar meets vegetarian heaven with a cool, laid-back vibe. The bi-level space features high ceilings and dramatic columns, with black and white photos adding to its vintage appeal. The menu is a mix of international flavors and dishes, with a fresh, vegetarian spin. House-made rigatoni, hummus with black pepper crackers and spring rolls are just a sampling of the seasonal menu."

Sanctuaria
Temporarily Closed
"Sanctuaria, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Sanctuaria is an eclectic restaurant known for their Latin and South American-inspired tapas. The atmosphere is incredibly unique, with a style that can only be described as dark and romantic. Unique 17th and 18th century art from churches around the world and Day of the Dead-inspired décor adorn the walls. The extensive craft cocktail should not be missed – try their happy hour on Tuesdays-Fridays from 5-7pm (or swing by for late-night happy hours after 11pm). And the best part about Sanctuaria? The expansive patio is magical, with fountains, couches, string lights, a 19th century French conservatory and a Belgian Gazebo Chapel."

33 N Sarah St
Building · Central West End
"The Block, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Remember the days when your local butcher was the cornerstone of the community? The Block pays tribute to that era with a full service meat counter complemented by artisanal appetizers and a locally inspired, seasonally changing menu. Begin your meal with the house-made pretzels dipped in smoked cheddar with caramelized onions or the flash fried Brussels sprouts, which will leave you wondering why your Mom never made them this way growing up. Next, move onto the farmhouse Block burger topped with a fried egg or put your fate in the hands of the chef himself with the butcher’s cut. Bonus points for their happy hour specials: $5 apps, $5 wines and $5 craft cocktails. And if that isn’t enough to entice you, their patio offers diners ample seating for any date night, family meal or business meeting."

You can sit comfortably while Chef Eliott Harris serves up fresh fish in expertly-prepared nigiri, sashimi and special dishes. The wine list at BaiKu features wines by the glass from allover the world. And when it comes to cocktails, it’s about quality—not quantity. The Ichigo and Ryu are two popular picks. Rise Coffee

"Rise Coffee, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. Located in “The Grove” district, Rise Coffee is for the people – at least that’s what the hand crafted sign behind the register says. And it’s true! They have their own fare of flavorful coffee, house-made syrups, cold brews, teas, pastries and quiche for whatever tickles your fancy. Rise really shines in how it manages to have a comfortable and cozy atmosphere for every scenario. Sit at the mismatched stools near the friendly baristas, use a tall top as a standing desk, occupy a table for a study spot, claim the couch upstairs to catch up with friends, or sit in the comfortable chairs scattered throughout for a good read. You’ll even find a table for children with a collection of picture books to match. It's a casual way to get your caffeine fix while avoiding the hustle and often-overwhelming bustle of an average chain. Sit back and relax with your not-so-average cup of joe."

Pappy's Smokehouse
Barbecue restaurant · Midtown
"Pappy's Smokehouse, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. When the Pappy’s Smokehouse doors open each day at 11am, the line that has formed outside begins to inch in. It moves fast, and serves as a tour of accolades – walls papered with local and national “Best Of’s” and endorsements by stars from Jim Edmonds to Pharrell Williams. No one lines up to see the fan love. They’re there to taste Midwestern BBQ at its finest. Choices of pork, chicken, beef, turkey and sausage are served in large portions, smothering everything from bread to salad. The Scottish Arms
Temporarily Closed
"Scottish Arms, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. The best antidote for hungry mouths is the Scottish Arms. Whether a casual lunch, romantic dinner or rollicking weekend brunch, this mid-town delight offers culinary classics from the U.K. and Europe. (May we suggest trying a Scottish egg or three?) But let’s not bury the lead—what the Scottish Arms is most famous for is its extensive collection of fine scotches and whiskeys. A few sips at the dark, oak bar will make you feel like you’ve been transported centuries in the past and miles across the Atlantic. However, even though the décor and the menu are designed to thrill the anglophile in all us, they also feature local beers from a swatch of St. Louis breweries, as well as a relaxing and sprawling outdoor patio to enjoy those days with decidedly un-Scottish weather. Fáiltíonn míile!"

Layla

"Layla, Midtown The Grove by Manifest. A visit to Layla is sure to bring you to your knees. They’re known for two major menu items—burgers and shawarma. And bring the heat on both. That is to say, if you’re terrified of spicy yum-yums, you may want to order a few of their eclectic drinks from their carefully curated cocktail menu. Befitting the blended nature of the menu and the concept, the vibe both inside and on their outdoor, street side patio is refreshingly causal. Its atmosphere is flexible enough to be perfect for a fun lunch with coworkers or a date night with someone who told you they’ve always wanted to try falafel."

"Rooster, Tower Grove South City by Grain. St. Louis is no newcomer to southern food, but Rooster has been winning praise left and right.
