We were here on Tuesday, right after opening at 12:00 PM. There were quite a few visitors. We ordered solyanka, goulash, currywurst, and strudel. Everything was excellent. The only thing is that we had to wait a little for the strudel, but it wasn’t a big deal. We really enjoyed everything. If someone is looking for authentic German cuisine, they must visit this place. It's affordable and delicious.

The experience at Zum Schusterjungen in Berlin was good. The atmosphere was charming and cozy, making it the perfect place for a relaxing and enjoyable meal. The service was decent, friendly, and made us feel right at home. I ordered the Wildschweingulasch mit Rotkohl und Klößen, and it was absolutely delicious. The wild boar goulash was hearty and full of flavor, paired perfectly with the tangy red cabbage and soft, pillowy dumplings. To finish off the meal, I had the apple strudel with vanilla sauce, which was the perfect sweet ending , warm, comforting, and incredibly tasty. The beers were also great. Overall, a wonderful dining experience with great food, decent service, and a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to enjoy traditional German cuisine!

One of the few places in Berlin that serves solid German food quickly. Atmosphere was relaxed and unpretentious.

Tourists not welcome. Cash only. Didn’t personally have a problem with cash only so we walked in. Place was pretty busy but there were a couple of tables for two. Asked for a table and the host looked at us and said it’s way too busy, not tonight. I’ve never felt discriminated against so obviously. Although I understand this in a local more intimate place but this is a busy area that was recommended by a local tour guide. Wouldn’t recommend.

Zum Schusterjungen - check it out if you want to get an idea of Berlin's last century beer joint culture and feel why several hundreds of these corner bars used to attract generations of Berliners. Today, you will find only a handful Berlin specific bars like Zum Schusterjungen that kept their historical image and did not follow another trend Zum Schusterjungen wants to preserve its historical charm and keep the idea of its founders alive that the working class deserves and appreciates the Berlin specific, genuine, and tasty meals at fair prices. The different meanings of the restaurant's name “Schusterjunge" which refer to a cobbler's apprentice as well as to a simple and hearty rye roll that you can still buy in every bakery are still a commitment: Both the restaurant owner and the service want their hospitality to be felt as refreshing and quick-witted as cobbler's apprentice were famous for and a team that values the simplicity of low-priced rye rolls. No surprise that the corner pub's history goes back to the Roaring Twenties. Back then, almost a century ago, Schusterjunge used to open its doors at 6 a.m. to cater clients* demand for beer, shots, meatballs, and pickled eggs. This was the time when an excessive go-out culture created excessive behaviour. Oral traditions mirrored the Zeitgeist when pub-crawls often were synonymous for pub brawls. It might remain unclear forever if such arguments were triggered by women, politics or soccer - but there is no doubt that always beer flowed like water. During the Fifties of the last century, the foundation of the German Democratic Republic bad its repercussions. The communist regime socialised, like many other businesses, the Schusterjunge and assigned it officially to feed the labouring classes. 1990, just after the wall came down, the new barkeepers changed the pub into a restaurant. Having survived all historical challenges, the Schusterjunge lived up to its die-hard image and retained its harsh charm. Today’s owner who has started his career during the GDR years at famous East Berlin Moscow Café" and gained more gastronomic expertise abroad is dedicated to keeping the soul of the Schusterjunge - being an Old-Berlin style pub.

Nice Eckkneipe offering a delightful selection of classic, old-fashioned dishes. The ambiance is undeniably relaxed, evoking a nostalgic charm. The staff is both knowledgeable and welcoming, enhancing the overall experience. The Buletten and Schnitzel were particularly impressive. With a spacious dining room and a cozy corner for drinks and snacks, this Eckkneipe is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of old Berlin.

Yelp
Came here on a vacation trip to Berlin over the winter after watching the series from Anthony Bourdain on Berlin restaurants. I had pinned this place as a go to because the food on his show looked AMAZING. My friend and I came here after exploring around Alexanderplatz and the Christmas markets. The subways in Berlin are pretty easy to navigate so it was a quick 10 minute subway ride from Alexanderplatz' Christmas market. The food (10/10) - I got the rindergoulasch (with pickled cabbage and potato dumplings), the goulash was pretty tender and cooked really well. I also really liked the potato dumplings because they almost had a gelatinous texture so it felt like I was eating a mochi, so chewy and so yummy! The potatoes also soak up the sauce well. I like how nicely pickled the cabbage was as well. It was the perfect for the cold Berlin winter. The drink was good too, I got basically a hot toddy which is just heated liquor with hot water. If you like whiskey based drinks I think this could be good but it's definitely on the less sweet side. Check this place out, food is great!

Yelp
(3.5 stars) Really enjoyed the currywurst and fries here, though I wish there was more sauce for the fries. The meat was quite good, fries were fine. Beer on tap not my favorite but easy to drink.

Yelp
Small German tavern -- as authentic as they come. We had the schnitzel and pork knuckle...it was epic. The pork knuckle is huge, it is enough for two people or possibly more. You definitely want reservations as this restaurant is in demand. You could roll the dice and sit at the bar like we did, but we were very lucky and grabbed the last two seats.

Yelp
Really good, authentic German food the way German moms used to make. Straightforward and basic, which is exactly what German food is all about. I had schnitzel with boiled potatoes and boiled cauliflower, and tasted exactly like my Oma's.

Yelp
To be honest with you, if i could give negative stars I would. I don't believe in giving stars to rude/ unfriendly restaurants. Customers is what makes a business become better. I came here ordered a "to go" (grandmother's sick and wanted to try this restaurant) food seems great with yelp reviews, so thought I'd give it a try. Prices were actually pretty high as it is 10+ euros plus for a dish, but I don't mind as long as it's good. Ordered over 30€ of food to go food, & an old man between his 50s told me very rudely with an impolite manner that he'll charge me next time 1€ per dish because of boxes? Wtf?! How about next time you tell your customers you can't afford "to go boxes" ?! Or maybe have a sign to bring your own containers?! Or maybe because I'm Asian and you're throwing a racial discrimination against me? The funniest thing about is, they decided to not even box it! Decided to FOIL it up because they didn't want it in a to go container, which then caused the food to become moist and soggy... I don't appreciate rude businesses like this regardless if the food is good or not, I'll rather waste my money on businesses who's genuine about the importance of customers & their food.

Yelp
We're staying nearby and this was the closest place with pork knuckle that had a decent review. We went in and it smelled wonderful and every table that wasn't taken (except the bar) had a reserved placard on it so it must mean it's popular. We got the eisbein (boiled pork knuckle/hock) with potatoes, mashed lentils and sauerkraut and an order of asparagus with potatoes. It took awhile to get the food even though the restaurant was half empty. They put a topping on the potatoes and asparagus that tasted like butter with crunchy panko and it was really off-putting to us. I scraped mine to the side before they could get a chance to adulterate my potatoes more than they already had. The mashed lentils were strange and something I don't care to experience again. This was my first eisbein and it simply isn't as tasty to my taste buds as haxen (cooked in the oven with crispy skin). It lacked much flavor at all and you should eat a bite of that with a bite of sauerkraut in order to pick up some flavor. The service was minimal. They seemed quite busy so it took awhile to get our order in and we got our bill quickly to avoid waiting for the next opportunity to flag someone down. I didn't like the food simply because it's not what I'm used to compared to the other German dishes I've had. Clearly I'm alone in this category as most reviews here are positive and the insane number of people waiting to get seated. We actually saw them turn away 3-4 groups that tried to get in without a reservation. So evidently it has a cult following, but just not to my liking.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with this place, that's the Schnitz ! (Sorry....) However be warned, it's rustic German at its best and I reckon you don't get the same welcome if you act like a douche and don't speak German one bit. The matrone is not to be tempered with. 2 of my friends' German is brilliant so we managed to establish good grounds for a good meal. What you get is simple: good quality German food and good quality german beer. And what else do you want on your first evening in Berlin? The pork knuckle was so tender and tasty, with potatoes boiled in a thick, tasty stock, sweet sourkraut. I also tried the shnitzel and it was tender and moist with crispy batter and good chips. The beer kept on coming, we kept on talking and I had to be rolled back to the appartment...all for about £13/person ! I need to learn how to speak German !

Yelp
Great service! Food was okay. Had the beef roulade, which was tough and dry. Also had the eisbein, which was good, especially when paired with their delicious sauerkraut and mustard. Good spot for an authentic Berlin experience, and a great value, but would definitely avoid the roulade.

Laure V.

Yelp
Friendly place to have a great Eisbein! Seems to be very popular so I highly recommend to book a table to try this very Berliner dish.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Great German food with a typical old-school "Berliner Kneipe" atmosphere! Service is also good. Whenever we feel like good German food, we always go back to this place. You cannot go wrong with this restaurant!

Demian L.

Yelp
Is the perfect place to take your visitors friends to eat real German food. Is the real thing. Very affordable and the service is very kind.

Alison L.

Yelp
Tasty German food with excellent service. Our waitress was even kind enough to bring over complimentary shots at one point. Pass on the goulash and instead go for the meatballs and the schnitzel. Outdoor seating, very close to the tram, and cash only!

Holly M.

Yelp
If you are looking for a very authentic German place, look no further. It is German from the manner of service to the decor to the food itself, and of course the beer selection. The food was a good price for the quality. The vegetarian options were not plentiful (a lot had fish), but that is to be expected in German restaurants. The schnitzel with the creamed mushrooms and potatoes was absolutely delicious. German food may not be what everybody likes, but if you want high quality German food and an experience that leaves nobody feeling as if their experience wasn't German enough, this is the place to go.

Amy B.

Yelp
They have great eisbein! Not the baked pork knuckle (schweine haxe) you see elsewhere. It is boiled, served pink off the bone with sauerkraut, mashed peas, and boiled potatoes...delicious! My husband had the schnitzel with mushroom sauce, he said the fried potatoes were heavenly and the schnitzel was fried perfectly. Has an authentic vibe and service was great and accommodating to our English speaking.

Cory S.

Yelp
Cozy room, well prepared food, English menu, reasonably priced, pro servers. All good! Great Pilsner too!!

Jon J.

Yelp
Great German meal. Schnitzel, cauliflower and chips. My wife had stuffed red pepper with pork filling and cauliflower soup. I also had the meat spicy soup that was excellent.

Nasrin M.

Yelp
I wouldn't go back here again. I get that this is authentic, but it wasn't good quality. I'm from San Francisco where we pride the source and ingredients of our food and this was straight up pub food and it wasn't great at that. The taste was fine don't get me wrong. Wouldn't recommend...

Yelp
I have met my German love there in the Ostzeiten, I found my Philosophy there later, I got all the Inspiration there and I spend the most beautiful time with my friends of HC there! Schuster's will be there forever! Till the end of times we shall be there too.

Steph G.

Yelp
There didn't seem to be many places with customers on a Sunday evening, so we figured the fact that it was about half full was a good sign. We had the boiled meatballs in a capers sauce and the fried meatball with a fried egg. Boiled meatballs are way better than they sound, and the capers sauce was delicious. My husband really enjoyed the fried meatball as well.

Nick J.

Yelp
Excellent, friendly, traditional restaurant. Schnitzels really good. Personable and efficient service with a great range of schnapps for after your meal. Plus really good prices. Try your German, no matter how bad. They are very forgiving and will give you an English menu! I'd go back tomorrow.

Leanne P.

Yelp
A great German pub, we visited one cold night and the place was packed. So we ate at the bar and started with a few drinks. The food portions were large. I had the schnitzel and loved the little fried potatoes and peas served with it.

Kris L.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place as it came locally recommended by the person I was renting an apt from. However, I ordered the same dish as I did in Dresden (brat, kraut, potatoes) and I found the dish in Dresden was far superior. The meal in Berlin had so much sauce from the kraut it was like a soup and it was terribly sour. I preferred the smooth whipped potatoes in Dresden as well. They also sat a party of 4 strangers at our table with us half way through the meal. Best part of the experience was the old lady serving us. Imagine a cigarette smoking, whiskey drinking lady running like crazy, yelling with a raspy voice. Bartender also offered us free shots on the way out! Service good, food average.

Yelp
Authentic German food at its best -- and you'll be pleased you made the trek to PBerg to visit this restaurant! I've been here before (a year ago) and was excited to introduce Zum Shusterjungen to an American friend who was visiting Berlin for the first time. I am so glad I asked if they served beef Rouladen, which was not listed on the regular menu, because it was excellent. My friend had the Berliner-style pork knuckle and loved it. I will definitely return to Zum Shusterjungen on any future visits to Berlin.

Yelp
This is a very typical, traditional and I'm sure 'deliberately preserved' German restaurant. It has a bit of an old-fashioned feel but the menu is exactly what it says on the tin. Good traditional German food. Very friendly (also dog-friendly), restaurant/pub. The food is not fancy or pretentious, it has a home-made feel about it, probably because it is! The Sauerbraten melts! Superb! I love Asian food but this restaurant really is a gem and shines in the sea of many Asian food places.. A must!

C D.

Yelp
Fantastic German fare for €6-9 euro, great beer, friendly service. Fantastic little local pub, will visit again many times :)

Aaron M.

Yelp
I was in search of sauerbraten. Good, rib sticking, old fashioned sauerbraten. I found it at Schusterjungen, with potatoes and red cabbage. Not only that, but my often picky wife LOVED her schitzel. The food is honest, authentic and plentiful. It's like home cooking. And to top it off, the prices are amazingly low. How this place doesn't have a 4.5 on Yelp is beyond me. Common guys!

Yelp
This place was a revelation. It stands out between all those pretentious pubs and bars and restaurants that seem to be the norm in Prenzlauer Berg just now. We went following good reviews here on qype and haven't been disappointed. Really good german grub, lovely service and a good feel to it too. Good value for money, easy to find and above all.a proper berliner pub. I shall be back any time i visit.

Mitch C.

Yelp
Meh. While the service was very good, the food was less than average. The highly rated dumplings were quite undercooked. The mains were not that good (braised beef & smoked ham). Does NOT take credit cards.

Qype User (Lola7…)

Yelp
excellent german food, although in the salat I had was way to much sugar. but you should go here for the meat! service is excellent.

Yelp
