Before I get into the nitty gritty of the review, I do have to mention that all of the employees here were SO NICE. Interacted with several staff members and they were all friendly and lovely.
However, that's not quite enough to get this hotel five stars, or even four stars.
If I were a young, broke twentysomething, or someone who was literally only coming here to sleep, then this hotel would have been fine. The second scenario was almost true, however I did try to get some work done in my room, and that was a struggle with the spotty WiFi. A couple of times I got the connection error message that told me to move closer to the router, which was hilarious considering that the room was a shoebox and I was in bed only inches away from the desk. What was I supposed to do, sit Indian-style on top of the desk? Lol.
Listen, for under $200 a night in midtown Manhattan, I understand that you're not going to get a lot of space. On that note, I must mention that the price point and location were exceptional. The hotel was within walking distance from Times Square, Penn Station, and a ton of excellent restaurants in Hell's Kitchen. Yet, the street wasn't too loud and there wasn't too much trouble getting picked up or dropped off via rideshare, so that was a major plus.
Now, for the grievances. The AC was hard to figure out. It seemed to go on and off sporadically. Don't think it was broken, just think it was an energy-saving thing. There's no real closet, just a rod with four hangers and two teensy drawers. For a couple days worth of clothes this wasn't unbearable, but I wasn't super jazzed about having my whole travel wardrobe hanging inches from my bed. The bed folds up to save space when you don't need it, which gives it a real hospital vibe (the white didn't help.) No fridge. :( There were some chipped corners on furniture which made the room feel a bit outdated. Sink was leaky and sprayed out in various directions. Didn't feel the cleanest, but nothing worth storming downstairs for. Shower was nice, and the soaps and lotions were plentiful and nice-smelling. View wasn't bad either, especially at sunset.
Walls seemed a bit thin and I vaguely recall waking up to noise a couple times through the nights, but I was so exhausted that I quickly fell back asleep.
The gym is super teensy, and odd to find. You have to walk through the restaurant and go through a random door, follow the hallway. There was only one elliptical, two treadmills, two Peloton bikes, and a row of weights and mats, all squished together into a space the size of a hotel room. There weren't ever too many people when I went, but a space that size feels crowded quickly, and it's always a bummer when someone's on the machine you want to use.
There's a restaurant and rooftop bar which is pretty nice, but drinks are pricey. Also a theatre which was cool, we saw Drunk Shakespeare there.
Didn't have to store my luggage so not sure if that's working or not at the moment, assuming not reading other reviews. Though I didn't experience this part personally, I will say that I would be pretty miffed if my hotel couldn't keep my luggage, in NYC especially.
Wasn't a totally awful experience, fine value for money, but this probably wouldn't be my first choice for another business trip. Might consider staying on a personal trip if I needed somewhere cheap to crash to keep costs down.
