"Utsav serves classic Indian food with the speed and ferocity of someone who’s as stressed about making a curtain time as you are. This 46th Street spot is ideal if you want something warm, spicy, and delicious but you don’t want to worry about waiting for a table. The space is massive, and looks like a modern bistro. We like the dal makhani and butter chicken, but you can’t really go wrong. Plus, Utsav stays open until 10:30pm.  " - neha talreja, bryan kim, hannah albertine, sonal shah, will hartman, molly fitzpatrick

"Utsav is an Indian restaurant in Midtown that operates with speed and ferocity, and it’s an ideal spot if you want something warm, spicy, and delicious but don’t want to worry about waiting for a table. (The space is giant.) We like the dal makhani and butter chicken, and they have a $25 lunch special with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options that change daily. Utsav also offers a newer Indo Chinese menu with items like Szechuan paneer, burnt garlic coriander fried rice, and salt and pepper prawns." - Team Infatuation

This Indian restaurant offers delicious food and excellent customer service. The flavors are authentic, and the staff is warm and attentive. Okra (Bhindi) was fantastic. Rumali-Roti is a must bread option.

Really amazing food, one of the best Bengali food that I've ever tried, and I'll be coming back for sure. The owner, Ms. Nandita herself stopped by to check on us. Here are the dishes we tried - Kosha Mangsho (Mutton), Malabar Fish Curry, Daab Chingri (Shrimp/Prawns), Ghee Bhaat and Luchi. The desert was Mishti Doi and Nolen Gur Er Icecream. Everything was really really good. Have to try it to believe it! And these are the dishes to try next time - Bengali Cuisine - Kolkata Fish Fry, Chelo Kebab, Enchor Er Biryani Indo-Chinese Cuisine - Chilli Chicken/Lamb, Salt & Pepper Prawns, Hakka Noodles, Egg/Burnt Garlic Fried Rice, Chopsuey Must must try!

A friend recommended the Bengali style fish fry and it didn’t disappoint. I will go back again and again for it! The chicken bharta and naan was really nice too. Decent ambience and polite service. They apply 18% gratuity on every check.

Google
Tasty Indian food - medium spicy was accurate here. The specialty drinks were great - we tried the Turmeric-Ginger Margarita & the Tiki Tamarind. Highly recommend the Butter Chicken and garlic naan. You do need to order the rice separately, each item is à la carte. Note- they do add 18% gratuity automatically to you our bill. There are high ceilings that help with the noise level and we sat by a window which was quieter. Food was served quickly which was convenient because we were going to a show near there.

Google
This is probably one of the very few Indian restaurants with authentic indo-chinese flavors. The drinks were on point and the food was a blast of flavors. We ordered the following: Drinks - Tiki Tamarind, Chai Espresso Martini Main Course - Chilli garlic noodles, Vegetable Manchurian Dessert - Moong dal halwa The drinks were average. However, the main course of noodles and Manchurian were yummm. The dessert of Moong dal halwa was okay, but I've had better. Overall, a great place to order food. Will have to try other drinks and desserts to comment generally about those.

Updating my review from the last experience! I believe in second chances and that's what I gave it to Utsav. This time I felt welcomed and had a pleasant experience dining! The food was good and the place is nicely built and lit up. This one's now recommended!

Update 2025: Walked in to try one of my favorite cuisines - Indo Chinese after a friend recommend me to try it out. Went to this place after 9 years and strangely enough Utsav is just like it was 9 years ago! We requested to be seated by the windows but were told that the table was for six people. Made sense, as the restaurant was packed to 2% capacity and they were expecting an extremely large group with the place closing within 30-mins for afternoon. Post that logic defying moment, we ordered Chicken Manchow Soup ($8), Veg Manchurian Dry ($14), Veg Hakka Noodles ($17) - the best plate of the day, Veg Szechuan Fried Rice ($17), and a slightly watery Szechuan Paneer ($20) with really soft & tender pieces of Paneer! Food overall was good, not on the spicy end, so we did request to get some Szechuan sauce to spice our food. Service was good overall, and food arrived within 25-mins of ordering. Very very relaxed vibe, but if I am craving Indo-Chinese, I'll visit my other favorite Indo-Chinese place which I reviewed recently on Yelp! Service is good and friendly hosts. The food was just okay. Understandably on the expensive side, due to its location, there are cheaper options around 9th Avenue. Definitely try their Masala Chaas (Butter milk) and their Chicken Chettinad.

Awesome food we as a family visit every time we are on the City. The Indo Chinese food here is awesome best we had in the USA

Yelp
really f*ing good. i have been craving samosa chaat for weeks at this point, and i finally decided that today would be the day i satisfy my needs. and let me tell you... it was well worth the wait. i placed an order for pickup, and was really just charmed by the restaurant in general. i love that it's "tucked away in plain sight", i wished i was sat at a table by those big windows. but anyways, the food is why i'm writing a review. suuuper yummy! all components of the dish were superb, the spice, the crunch, the blend of sauces. simply perfect! i totally see myself going back and eating around the whole menu.

Marney R.

Yelp
Hard to find but worth it! You have to go down either 46th or 47th past Ave of Americas and then you will see a sign. The restaurant part is on the second floor when you walk into the building. The food here is incredible, and is a little bit spicy so be prepared for that.

Maria N.

Yelp
Wow-I stopped by for dinner as I was in town. I have dined in many Indian restaurants. Very much enjoyed my dinner. So flavorful! Friendly service. Next time I am in town - I plan to stop in again :)

Tina C.

Yelp
Came here for my birthday dinner, and I liked that the restaurant has a Bengali menu. Restaurant is spacious, and the waitstaff is attentive and prompt. The food was delicious! The puchka (pani puri) was reminiscent of my childhood. I enjoyed the kadai paneer and chicken biriyani. I had the mishti doi for dessert, and once again...reminiscent of my childhood. The flavors were wonderful in all the dishes we tried, and the drinks were strong. I'll definitely be back!

Penny B.

Yelp
I don't understand the hype behind this restaurant. Yes, it looks beautiful and is in a prime location but that's pretty much where the compliments stop. We ordered the paneer kulcha which was decent in flavor but the size is comical. The manchurian and noodles were actually not too bad (probably the only redeeming part). Although, the manchurian was a little over-salted. The service was horrible and slow. The dude who was our server was not friendly and we had to wait so long to get more water. I will probably never go back as I went here while visiting the city.

Michael N.

Yelp
In a city with so many choices for every type of food, it's hard to find places that distinguish themselves over other similar cuisines. Utsav did itself proud! We visited at lunch hoping for a buffet but ended up ordering a la carte. We had veg samosa, lamb biryani, palak paneer and garlic naan. Wow - it was all so delicious. We have eaten in India many, many times; and we found this to be even better than that. The restaurant has an upscale look and feel. There's cloth napkins and table cloths. The service was good as well, even with many full tables. We visit NYC many times per year, and we now have our Indian restaurant in the city! Sorry no pictures, we were too busy eating!

Daniel R.

Yelp
Overall a nice restaurant in Times Square with incredible service! I came with friends on a Sunday afternoon and found the place very clean and spacious, which is a luxury in this area of NYC! I liked the food, especially the saag paneer. I thought the chicken tikka would have been better with better cuts of chicken; my pieces were mostly gristle. The malai kofta wasn't quite what I was expecting either. Overall, I would come back!

Ravi K.

Yelp
I took my family to this restaurant while we were visiting New York. Ambience is good. We ordered daal tadka, jain daal, papad, jeera rice, tandoori roti, bengan bharta. Taste was good but the service was too slow considering there were handful of customers. The only surprise was the price of water bottle. $8 for a liter of water bottle which costs less than $2. That's ridiculous.

Kamila K.

Yelp
Utsav is located in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square. The seating was uncomfortably close together for how empty the restaurant was for a Friday evening... Taking pride for its Indo-Chinese and traditional Indian cuisine, the restaurant has a mix of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options that cater to all palates. The food at Ustav was flavorful and beautifully presented. The paneer tikka masala was another highlight, with generous chunks of paneer in a tangy, slightly sweet sauce. The biryani packed a punch of spices and flavor while the rice was aromatic. Portions are small considering that traditionally these meals are eaten family style.

Pratima M.

Yelp
A restaurant and event space serving up delicious Indian and Indo-Chinese eats -- half of the space was rented out for a function, but they do a good job separating the dining area from the music. All of the food here was so delicious, my favorites being the Dum Aloo, Paneer and Shrimp Hakka Noodles -- it took a long time to come out, so we were super hungry with a later reservation. Overall tasty, would come back (especially to try some Bengali specials)!

Kimberly V.

Yelp
Utsav was an okay experience. My friend and I went together and ordered the garlic naan and chicken kali mirch and some type of chicken soup. I have to say, this was not the best meal I've had in my NY trip. The chicken was bland without the sauce but even the sauce was meh. The soup was odd tasting. Service was good but a bit slow. Was weirded out when they put us in a room far away, not too sure what that was about. Would I go back? No. Portions were pretty small for the price I was paying. The best item we ordered was the naan and water. The naan was absolutely delicious and just right; not soggy with the seasoning on top but very flavorful and warm.

Jacky C.

Yelp
Came here for a Diwali event. Enjoyed the food that was served at the event as well as the drinks. Mango Lassi is delicious. The Butter Chicken is fantastic. I took more of that sauce just to mix it in with the jasmine rice, game changer. Also great with the naan bread. Gotta end it with Gulab Jamun.

Ajit S.

Yelp
Stopped at this place after visiting Rockefeller center. Very spacious restaurant unlike other NY restaurants which tend to be cramped. Nice decor. Crispy chilli babycorn and Chilli prawns (dry) were spicy and awesome. Chicken Haryali Kabab was one of the best I had. Bhetki Macher Paturi (a bengali fish dish) was nice but I would have preferred gravy. Chilli garlic noodles and Chicken in manchurian sauce were both very good. Only reasons this place gets a 4 star instead of 5 are: 1. The Cocktail (Tiki tamarind) was too watery (less alcohol). For $16, it was a ripoff. 2. The entree and appetizers were pricey but portions were less. I would suggest charging a bit more but give your patrons large hearty portions.

Prasad D.

Yelp
This is another Indian cuisine we tried during lunch time. Very specious, good menu options. Tried vegetarian only and taste was very good. It looks like it is more Bengali (east part of India) so assuming sea food preparation must be good. Ambience is very attractive. This restaurant is on second floor so little difficult for new person to locate. Also service was very slow. We need to find out server for even for extra spoon. But it may be one off. Try out this place.

Pav W.

Yelp
This is a great Indian restaurant with a Bengali menu near Times Square that is worth a visit. We took a relative there who was staying in NYC. The service was prompt and I enjoyed a fruity cocktail flavored with banana. The atmosphere is lively and colorful in the spacious dining room which is upstairs from a ground level bar. The food was genuine and tasty, with tender meat chunks and creamy curry sauce. We went for the Bengali menu but the Indochinese was good as well. I happen to love Indian Kurd, a Bengali specialty, which they serve here. What a great dessert option!

Sucheta C.

Yelp
Experience Newly introduced Bengali menu at Utsav It has been curated to accommodate both vegetarian and non-vegetarian palate and has a host of dishes that represent the Bengali cuisine. Recently visited them .. We have tried Nimbu paani Fish fry Jhal Muri Daab Chingri Bhetki Maccher Paturi Kosha Mangsho Cholar dal Aloor Dum Luchi Bhaat Mishti doi Bengali food is a combination of subtle and fiery flavours. There are certain European influences also like the snack food tradition and foods like chops , fish fry and cutlets that are British in origin but are prepared and served in most Bengali households. They have focused on presenting classic dishes of Kolkata in their menu. Try the Jhal Muri ,Fish fry, Bhetki Macher Paturi (fish fillet in a spicy mustard paste steamed in a banana leaf), Daab Chingri (large prawns cooked with mustard in a tender green coconut )and Kosha Mangsho (slow-cooked spicy mutton curry) with some Bengali Alur dum , Cholar dal, Luchi. Don't forget Mishti doi which is a thick and creamy sweet yogurt dessert that's one of my favourite too. If you're in New York City do check out this restaurant. Their Bengali menu aims to give you a taste of indulgence like the jolly Bengalis. They also offer Indo Chinese and regional Indian cuisine.

Tom B.

Yelp
Another example of how sometimes the overall rating for restaurant is impacted by people who are not fully satisfied and people who had a great experience but don't take the time to right a review. Food was fantastic, staff friendly and a great atmosphere.

Samakshi K.

Yelp
Good spacious Indian restaurant in the heart of Times Square area with large menu selections of food. We were a large group and this place worked out well. Service was fairly good as well.

Trina C.

Yelp
Really cool to see Bengali food get more representation. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the service is good. We ordered food off of the Bengali and non-Bengali menus. I really liked the cholar daal, luchi, and mishti doi but thought the veg chop was just okay and wouldn't order again. The chicken tikka was quite good as well. Portions are huge. Since the food was more on the expensive side, I had high expectations and most menu items were very good but not outstanding. Still, I think it's worthwhile to try the Bengali menu.

Sam G.

Yelp
I've been coming to this restaurant for over two decades, and it used to be great. However, my last two visits were extremely disappointing in terms of hospitality, decor, and the staff's behavior and training. I was dining with my son, who is scheduled for a procedure at NYU, and the hostess seated us in a cramped corner right next to a couple on a romantic date. We ordered drinks, but the soda was flat. When the waiter served our curries, his thumb was in every dish--even the biryani wasn't spared. We jokingly dubbed it "Thumb Biryani." Save your money--there are far better Indian restaurants in NYC.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Utsav offers Bengali cuisine, and I had never tried this type of food before, along with Indo-Chinese--what a unique combination! I was pleasantly surprised by the distinct flavors, which differ from my usual go-to Indian dishes. While the Indian influence is definitely present, the Bengali dishes stood out with their bold mustard seed flavors, and the Indo-Chinese cuisine had a noticeable Chinese flair. The Indian-spiced elements were also fantastic. The Indian-spiced cocktails were fantastic, especially the chai espresso martini--it was wonderful!

Josefina P.

Yelp
Good food and service. Feels like a secret hideaway in midtown. The bread and curries are delicious and they have a large dining room.

Anu B.

Yelp
Good Indian food and service. Good location. Pleasant and well up-kept ambience. We were visiting NY and this was a convenient lunch option for us. We came when they were closing but they still obliged and served us. Thankful for that!

Ian C.

Yelp
Good Indian food! The drinks were good as well, although I ordered this smoked whiskey drink and they actually lit a fire and caused it to be smokey. Which, was kinda weird, but on a funny way. The service was great and the owner even came out to take our orders and make recommendations for us. We had a great time here and would definitely eat here again.

Xue Lin L.

Yelp
Had a quick lunch here and the food was super good. The lamb and chaat was flavorful and the naan bread was fluffy and warm. There was also some type of bean curry which I've never had before which was also nutty and delicious. The only thing that was lackluster was the rice - it just tasted kind of dry / stale. Service was good, waiter took time to explain the spice levels and different options for lunch. I took off a star because the interior is in desperate need of an upgrade and the restrooms needed a good cleaning - I was just washing my hands quickly but it smelled like urine in there :(

Kamath V.

Yelp
Decent food, great service and Ambience. We ordered Chicken chettinad, Bindi masala, kadai Paneer and paneer chilli. Quality food but on the higher side pricewise.

Shaina A.

Yelp
Amazing food, ambience and service. One of the best restaurants I've been to in Time square, in such a busy area you wouldn't expect restaurants to be this consistent and considerate with their customers and food. Must visit place if you are visiting New York.

Cindy W.

Yelp
We had a decent experience here on a Friday night. The dishes were tasty, and the garlic naan bread was to die for (super buttery and flaky). The cocktails were slightly disappointing - we had the vodka passion, which was way too strong. The turmeric margarita was also just ok. Service was a bit slow on Friday night - but be aware that a 20% gratuity is included. We had the hot garlic sauce fish from the Indo-Chinese menu and saag lamb from the Indian menu. Portions were generous, and you only need one serving of basmati rice for two.

Abhilasha S.

Yelp
Really small portion sizes . They got us really small 2 mini kulchas in one serving . Either increase the number of kulchas or the size .... It was really surprising to see that kind of serving size . The chilli chicken appetizer hardly had 4 decent pieces of chicken . Really disappointed .

Michael P.

Yelp
The food was very excellent and I would go back for that. But I was not happy with a mandatory 18% gratuity per table with the service being less than mediocre. My server was grumpy and never came back to check on me which meant the restaurant lost revenue of additional orders from me like more to drink more rice Etc..

Shivina K.

Yelp
An amazing Indian restaurant in NYC! I was going here for the classic Indian food, but in an amazing surprise I found Indo-Chinese. It was incredible! I got the egg fried rice, manchow soup, chicken Manchurian, chili garlic noodles, and their kebabs. Don't miss out on the soup!

K M.

Yelp
Off the street this East Indian bar and grill looks like a non-descript bar, but check out the beautiful second level dining space. It comfortably accommodates groups, large and small. Lots of natural light too. We came in for lunch. I suggest the Lunch Specials (~$25 pp) - omnivorous or vegetarian for a complete experience. The Naan and Roti breads were served hot and fresh. I chose a tasty Chicken Masala with sides. The Palik Paneer (cooked spinach-cheese) was the best I've had! I finished with a non-alcohol digestif: Jal Jeera which was terrific! The wait staff were kind, and patient in explaining menu options. It seems Utsav is accustomed to the "power lunch" crowd, so you won't need to wait long to eat. That said, we were not rushed at all on this day. Recommended.

Tanya S.

Yelp
Very nice food, went here after visiting Rockafella and tried the Bengali menu, everything was delicious!

Neha G.

Yelp
Overall a meh for food (which cant be customized for the spice levels) and service. We come to NY every year for several weeks, and I have tried this place a few times, but cant get to like them, not even once. The gratuity is mandatory and despite the disclaimer, does-not ethically justify the burden. I think I have had enough and wouldn't be coming back. There are a far better Indian food choices in the Times Square area, management should really look for the reasons that the popularity is on decline.

Jasmin J.

Yelp
Great Indian Restaurant excellent food and hospitality by Ramson great experience. Food was authentic desert took the experience to higher level. I really suggest visiting Utsav!

Evelyn M.

Yelp
My friend and I visited here for dinner after work. We were both not really feeling that hungry so we decided to just get a bunch of appetizers and naan instead of any entrees. We definitely got judged but the server seemed to find it a little funny. We got there at around 6ish and it seemed very empty, but by the time we left at around 8/7:30 the place was really filling up! A little expensive and I definitely had better Indian food, but not too bad. 4 stars for their patience with us :)

Tim O.

Yelp
Service was fine and food was tasty, but the lunch special features a tiny portion of protein (3-4 chunks), a small spoonful of rice, and then 1000 calories worth of naan. Probably a good restaurant, but the lunch special left a lot to be desired.

Anushka B.

Yelp
Went for some appetizers and drinks. The food tasted very good (I like spicy food and it was spicy). Quick service. Good quality. Decent atmosphere. Expensive though. Loved the crispy babycorn and chicken kali mirch kebabs. For drinks had the feni jungle. Interesting cocktails served.

Allen C.

Yelp
Had a large group here for a corporate function and could not have been more wonderful to work. Accommodations were in a private room which we started outgrowing and they graciously provided more space for us Food was family style and at their suggestion, all guest thoroughly enjoyed the food. Great authentic food in the middle of great area in manhattan, would highly suggest if you have large groups!

Tricia B.

Yelp
It was dark in there (it was nighttime)! The service was lousy (there's an older gentleman who seems to be the host (and a waiter) and seems like he's mad at the world. That was the sweetest Tikka Masala I've ever tasted. And the garlic naan had no flavor. And that's the first time EVER at an Indian restaurant that I've had to pay for the rice separately. It's usually included, after all, the Tikka Masala was something like $29!!! The restaurant was close to my hotel so I took a chance. I lose.

Ingrid S.

Yelp
Came here quite awhile back last spring and forgot to write a review. Went here with a group of folks for a lunch. We tried a large variety of things both vegetarian and for meat lovers. Things to know about this spot: It's kind of off the beaten path and hidden with large office buildings and in the lounge of a large building. It's hard to notice it which is a shame because they offer a unique menu of food that I'm not too familiar with and never have had and what I want to call super spicy Indian/Indonesian food. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. Favorite stand out items: I remember the mustardy fish being creamy and having great flavor for those without a heat tolerance. The fried drumsticks were also fantastic. I'm not sure if everything is the same on their menus. Thin spicy noodles were burn your mouth off but delicious. A giant egg dish that had rice stuffed inside. Don't sleep on desert. Their ice cream with these fried caramel like crisps on top was so good. The only thing I would really say was lacking were cocktails. While being fairly strong, they were choke worthy strong and lacked a nice balance of flavors. The place is also pretty enormous with being two levels. I believe they have a $20 lunch special every day as well.

Alexander P.

Yelp
High hopes for Christmas dinner 2022. Deflatingly, the CTM was bland. On the bright side, the general holiday vibes in the open dining room were merry. The wait to pay was 25-30 mins. Eventually waiting this long will erode any Christmas cheer... Overall, I wouldn't return (based on the food), but I acknowledge Utsav offers a convenient and tempting Indian food option close to Times Square.

Henry H.

Yelp
Though a little hard to find, the food was great and authentic! Not to mention the really nice staff!

David J.

Yelp
I was really intrigued by the idea of the Chinese food like they serve in India. The hot & sour soup was really hot; that's a good thing. Szechuan fried rice, Indian style? Sure, I'll try that. I want to come back for the Hakka style noodles. Everything was delicious. One not-so-nice thing I'll be aware of next time: when you receive your check for the meal, it includes a gratuity, but when it's time to sign, there's a line for "tip." I don't begrudge tipping extra for good service, and this WAS good service, but it seems a little underhanded, like they are counting on the customer not noticing s/he has already paid a gratuity. Moral of the story: always look at the bill.

Nimmi J.

Yelp
The food was pretty decent, no complaints there. Service was however quite negligible after food was served. Wanted to order something to add to our order but after we were past 15 minutes of our meal and no servers were around we gave up.. also didn't like the fact that they added 18% gratuity automatically... not sure if that's normal in Manhattan.

Samantha P.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the comfort of this place! Nice spacious dining room and air conditioned. I ordered the butter chicken kulcha as an appetizer which was honestly the perfect appetizer, great chutney as well. For dinner I ordered the tikki masala and the bengali dish bengali alur dum. SO SPICY!! I almost always opt for a mild option to still get some spice but still be able to enjoy the food. This place didn't offer an option and everything was so spicy I was suffering lol. The flavors and everything was so good and cooked perfectly but was hard to eat because of the spice. Overall was a great experience I would just bring some milk next time lol.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Utsav is always on my list when visiting NYC! Amazing food and atmosphere near theaters.

Sharm S.

Yelp
I used to order from Utsav all the time when I worked on 51st and 6th! Went back recently and tried out their new Indochine menu and it was delicious. Love the Indian Chinese fusion and lots of chili dishes and noodles. Please try the gulab jamun crème brûlée for dessert! Please support your local restaurants!
