This is my second favorite hotel in all the world. My first is the Villa D' Este on Lake Como, Italy, where we honeymooned. This isn't nearly as grand, and instead, this is modern and new, but to measure it against the Villa D' Este says a lot about this hotel!
The hotel was formerly a palace, which they've just transformed into a contemporary, yet super comfortable hotel. The staircase is really the only original part remaining, and it's beautiful!
The apartment itself doesn't feel palatial, but our 2-bedroom, 2-bath with living room and kitchen is pretty spacious. Have you ever checked out those brand new contemporary condos in the South of Market (SOMA) are in San Francisco? Well, this apartment feels just like those! The apartment itself isn't particularly as large as the Hotel Majestic we just left in Barcelona, but the decor, and the fact that it is only a year old are the real appeals for me. I just absolutely love the contemporary, but cozy decor. Simple, yet very tasteful. Just check out my photo of the SMEG'S!
We decided on the 2-bedroom, so that Hubby can conduct his teleconferences at odd times with people from all over the world, without waking me up. For me, this was worth it. Also, as I've mentioned before, in my opinion, having separate bathrooms is pivotal for a happy marriage. The 2-bedroom comes with a living room and kitchen that is stocked with cooking utensils, and everything you'll need, should you care to make breakfast or a full blown dinner.
Location is excellent. Just step outside the hotel, and there are restaurants and shops all over. I really like this part of Lisbon. If you go down the hill, you'll come across more touristy type of places. FYI - it only took about 15 minutes to walk to the Time Out Market. If you go up the hill, there are nicer upscale boutiques. A great combination of the two. We didn't even need to take the tram up the hill, and just walked it to and from. However, if you have mobility issues, walking to and from this area on the cobblestones might be very challenging.
Because the hotel is located in the Bairro Alto, an area where there are many restaurants and bars, it can get a little noisy outside. It's about 2am now, and I can hear some noise, although our room is up high and the double paned windows help to muffle most of the noise. Had we been on a lower floor, though, I might be a little concerned.
A slight downside is the spa/gym. The gym is open 24 hours, and the spa portion is only open until 9pm. However, when I went to use the spa, which was small, I had to go up and down the hall looking for someone. Also, the steam room never really got hot. I have a steam shower at home, and it gets steamier than what I experienced. All first-world problems. I get it, but frustrating nonetheless.
What we really love is the spaciousness and homey feel this apartment provides. I'm sitting in the kitchen now, which by the way, has great lighting, as does the entire apartment, typing this review and feeling like I'm at home. Actually, I think I prefer this over our places!
I'd return here in a heartbeat if I came back to Lisbon! No doubt!!
