This rustic-chic gastropub dazzles with unique burgers, inventive cocktails, and a vibrant patio, making it a must-visit for food lovers in Chicago.
"Dinner at three-Michelin-starred Smyth requires a very special occassion but downstairs sibling spot The Loyalist a far more reasonably priced way to try executive chef John B. Shields’ food. Inspired by French neighborhood restaurants, the menu includes beef tartar, quiche lorraine and chocolate profiteroles along with a killer cheeseburger. Walk-ins are always welcome, though reservations are available through Tock." - Samantha Nelson
"You’ll pass by Three-Star Michelin restaurant Smyth before descending the stairs to sister spot The Loyalist, where comfortable booths and a long stretch of bar help to usher in familiar fare with an elevated twist (think pickled beet deviled eggs and a lobster chopped salad). And then, of course, there are the burgers—three of them (each complete with frites). The OG Cheeseburger is the one that’s become a city-wide fast favorite—a single patty that packs umami with onion four ways (griddled, butter, mayo, pickled), plus cucumber pickles aboard a toasted sesame bun. The French Smash brings its own personality, with garlic Dijonnaise, cornichons for crunch, and escargot butter—for a just-sweet-enough je ne sais quois. And traditionalists will do well by the Classic Smash, a smash burger with minced onion, cucumber pickles, and American cheese. Spring for them all for an animated discussion between bites—but save room for dessert (the Baba au Rhum and Tarte au Chocolat are calling your name.)"
"John and Karen Urie Shields opened a two-pronged project to much acclaim in 2016. Although Smyth, the fine dining component, gets most of the accolades, its subterranean sibling is an equally superb place to eat and drink. The burger patty, recognized as one of Bon Appetit’s three best in 2017, is a blend of short rib, chuck, and ground bacon. It’s taken to the next level with pickled and charred onions, American cheese, pickles, and onion-infused mayo. Online ordering is available here." - Eater Staff, Ashok Selvam, Naomi Waxman
"The Loyalist is now offering a “Burger Blowout” private dining experience for 10-14 people. It’s a family-style dinner that includes snacks, burgers, cookies, punch bowls, and more. In other words, similar to a birthday party you’d have as a kid, but with more booze. The whole thing lasts about two hours and costs $45 per person. Make a reservation here" - adrian kane
"The Loyalist in the West Loop has an absolutely fantastic burger. And while we enjoy eating inside this cozy French restaurant located in the basement of Smyth, we’re happy to announce that they just opened their sidewalk patio this week. Because it’s nice to have the option of sitting outside and enjoying the breeze with your cheeseburger." - adrian kane
