"More or less hidden in plane sight, the Hallwyl Palace is a 1900s city mansion turned into a museum. Experience how the rich lived at the beginning of the last century. If you have the time, book one of the dramatized guided tours and get to know the people who used to live and work here. During the summer months Hallwyl’s courtyard turns into a vibrant bar, so why not end your visit in style with a glass of something bubbly." - 25AH

"On the same street as some of the city’s busiest stores, including NK, Zara and Illums Bolighus, is an archway leading into a courtyard. It’s all too easy to walk past and not realize that this is one of the city’s best free attractions. The wealthy von Hallwyl family bequeathed their home, built in 1898, to the city in 1920. Once one of the most luxurious townhouses in Scandinavia, it was given on the condition that it be preserved as it is. So step inside, and you can see how life was lived by the upper classes. More recently a summer-only bar has opened in the inner courtyard, making it one of the more glamorous places to stop by for an alfresco cocktail."

"When completed in 1898, this was one of Scandinavia’s most opulent private homes. When the owners gave it to the Swedish state in 1920, they did so on the condition that nothing be changed. The result is a fascinating look at how a wealthy Swedish family lived around the start of the 20th century. The courtyard hosts a fashionable restaurant, but inside it is just as it was when Count and Countess Walther and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl were in residence."

A well preserved merchant’s house and old belongings. The wall features and furnishings almost just as grand as what you can see in the palace. Smaller space so you could finish in probably an hour or so.

Absolutely breathtaking, hidden gem of Stockholm and definitely one of the must-sees.

Beautiful museum, not too crowded with tourists. You can find descriptios of every room in English besides Swedish.

A spectacular museum! A beautiful mansion. A must see when in Stockholm. We were surprised it wasn’t better known on the tourist circuit. You have the place almost to yourself. It’s just stunning, full of amazing detail and old world charm. A beautiful home available to visit. We didn’t eat there, but the restaurant in the courtyard has a great atmosphere. I would eat there next time I visit.

Impressive mansion turned museum in the middle of the city. The entrance is very unassuming and I think this is one of a hidden gem even as a local as it is easy to think of this as some rich person’s house that can be shallow. In fact I think the Hallwyl family has to be recognized for their vision to curate their house as a museum and later on donating the property and everything in it to the country. During the visit, unfortunately the art gallery floor was not available (they said not all floors are available and they don’t have a schedule). I highly recommend to purchase the audio guide during your visit as it adds so much depth to the story. I am definitely coming back multiple times to see the areas not available including the art gallery and it looks like they also open the cellar for special events and the courtyard only opens seasonally in the summer.

A beautiful mansion located in the heart of Stockholm! Great museum - an absolute must see for everyone when in Stockholm. If you know Swedish, I would recommend taking an excursion: it is really worth it. History and art tied together make an interesting combo. Many magnificent and famous art pieces to see, as well as beautiful furniture pieces. Easy to visit with kids.

The museum is full of collections that one could easily spend a day in it. However, due to the limited space, it’s not easy to move around especially when there are tours or groups blocking the entrances.

Such a beautiful house. All the furniture and the accessories are the original ones. Like stepping back in time. Free to roam on your own. They have some guided tours but I was not in time for the English one. Definitely if in Stockholm to pay a visit

Yelp
Stunning collection of art, furniture, weapons and baroque style rooms in a great location. There's even a beautiful courtyard area where you can grab a cocktail after if you come in the evening like we did! Check this out - I enjoyed this museum more than the royal palace as there are English cards in each room with wonderful explanations of how the rooms were used and a glimpse into the family's life. Also it is free! So stay 10 min or hours.

Yelp
The museum is housed in a historical building in central Stockholm and faces Berzelii Park. The house used to belong to the Count and Countess von Hallwyl, but was donated to the state in 1920s. The museum takes you back in time to late 19th century and strikes its visitors with opulence and glitter of the rich aristocratic family. Impressive collection of paintings, furniture, China, and weaponry is displayed in rooms of grand nature decorated in various styles. An window into a private life of aristocracy! It's free to attend, but you would have to pay 70 SEK for a guided tour. Tour will also get you an access into certain rooms closed for general public.

Yelp
Hidden treasure in Stockholm. This should definitely be on your list. Sure, it may not be as awesome as the Vasa Museum or entertaining like the ABBA museum...but the opulence of the Hallwylska house will wow you. Just be warned, there are some major stairways (spoiler alert: that's also how the late Madam Hallwyl went... down the steps - kablam). But such decadence. And it's also free - so gucci.

Yelp
The Hallwylska Museet is a real treasure in Stockholm. It is one of the only house museums in the Swedish capital. Undoubtedly it is impressive. The rooms are furnished in the grand style from the time when the family Hallwyl lived here. Especially outstanding is their historical porcelain collection - one of the best anywhere. I liked the billiard room - how cool to play a game of eight-ball in such an environment! And did I mention this is all free. Yeah .... just wait in line and you will soon be transported back to another century. Tip - to see the impressive art gallery of the Hallwylska Museet, you have to go on a group tour. Do it if you can.

Yelp
This place is actually a museum / bar / restaurant. But i think it's only occurred during the summer. I went to the bar/restaurant, not the museum part. The most unique part of this place, I would say, is the building. Old-style Scandinavian building. Price is a bit higher than regular bars, but it's worth the money. Beautiful restaurant.

Yelp
A historical home museum, this place is a total gem. I believe you can see a decent amount of it for free - I bought the audio guide which I may not have needed because every room had a sheet in English describing things. You need a guided tour to see the 3rd floor, but even without that it was totally worth the visit. The rooms are more handsomely appointed than the Royal palace, IMO.

Yelp
Free admission so why not? It resembles a small palace with all the interior design and pieces Has a lot of rooms and great design! Free admission with information notes in each room but you can always opt for guided tours or audio tours for a fee. Make sure to check in with register to get your sticker to go in Still not as cool as the Royal Palace but its not bad!

Yelp
This museum wasn't really on my list first, but I did asked from some locals about which museum they recommend, and The name of the Hallwylska Museet (Hallwyl Museum) pop out. I did some digging online, it looks quite nice, so I took my hubby to this place to check it out. The Hallwyl Museum is also one of those museums that allow visitors free to visit, Before we actually went into the museum, we need to pick up this sticker ticket, so they know that we are visitor. My first impression of this place was really great, what a grand place, full of fine and beautiful antiques, I realized soon it actually was a house before it tuned into a museum. Well, the house of Walther von Hallwyl and his family. It was design by Isak gustaf clason, it was really amazing how the look of the house. There are couple different sections in the house, I don't think any of them should be miss out. my personal favorites were the living which with the piano in it. it just looked amazing, the room with the collection of weapons was quite cool as well, the room full of porcelain was quite interested as well. The Museum was that big anyway, we just took our time and looked around. We also went out to the backyard? Which is really lovely garden with bar. Great place to just sat down and enjoyed the time. Although it wasn't on my place to visit check list, it surely is now. I am really glad that we visited this place. Even better, the museum is really close to the central of Stockholm, quite easy to go there. It is just brilliant.

Yelp
This museum is a little treasure in Stockholm- somewhat akin to the Frick in NYC. We came on a Sunday when it was very crowded so we would recommend not going on the weekend if possible. The collection is a little eclectic and not well organized for our taste, but it was still an interesting visit

Yelp
If you like looking at collections and crazy rich people houses, this is the place for you! Can't spend much more than 45 mins-1 hour here but it's free, and there's a tonnn of cool collectibles, china, random weapons, art, furniture, etc. to see. I'd say it's worth it to check out!
