"Taberu Nomu in Chelsea specializes in donburi with pre-set bowls, available in three sizes and multiple combinations of fish. A small is $20, medium is $28, and a large donburi is a whopping $60, the same price as most new video games." - will hartman

Taberu Nomu is a MUST try for Japanese food for a great price, wonderful atmosphere, and the friendliest staff. Wan was the kindest waiter we have met in NYC. Wan took care of us with a friendly smile, kind heart, and friendly chat. Bank was the other staff member who prepped our beautiful dishes. He was friendly, funny and kind!

Had the Yonaha Maehama donburi—seafood quality was definitely better than what you'd get from sushi delivery. Rice had a nice toothy bite, well done. Great add-on options. It’s a good spot for a quick bite, easy in and out. The space is extremely tight, as it used to be a narrow alleyway between two buildings, so don’t expect to linger.

I made a reservation online through google and it was a breeze! Upon arrival, I saw the atmosphere and was very nice, loved it. The only thing I probably didn’t like is the bathroom which was connected to the next door apartment building. The food is great, very fresh and different which I like. Great spot for a date and would def come again!

Google
Tldr, very high quality ingredients (probably one of the highest quality I've had for donburi) but the portion size was small relative to the price. There was a minimal amount of fish so the fish to rice ratio felt like it was on the low end vs other places. The sides of fish are $6 and only provide 3 slices of sashimi. I felt the menu prices could be lower. Ambiance was so-so as the place had an interesting smell. The chairs are wooden stools with no backrest. The service was OK, staff wasn't particularly attentive but is Japanese nature to not bother the customers before service is requested. The food came out extremely quickly.

Google
Great food at a fair price. We got lucky and we're able to walk in on a Friday night. Non-descript and unassuming, this place offers simple rice bowls with quality fish on top. You can't go wrong with any of the bowls. We also ordered the octopus and pickles, which made for simple, yet delicious sides.

Google
Wow, the fish here is super fresh and you can taste the quality, the service is really efficient and quick. The space is a little small, but you don’t have to wait long for a seat, as they’re super efficient. I got the tuna and salmon bowl with shrimp, and I’ve never had raw shrimp before this is my first time, but it was really great.

Google
A simple, perfectly prepared bowl of rice, topped with the freshest of fish. We each had a medium bowl (which was an ideal size) plus dessert and everything was on point. The hip-hop soundtrack allowed us both to vibe and before we even knew it our bowls were done with little conversation. Tasty bites took priority. There is no doubt we will be back and I was jazzed to learn they do takeout.

This was the 3rd time I’ve eaten their sushi - I’ve been impressed with the quality and the freshness of the topping they offer every time, but I’ve been very disappointed by their sushi rice the last two times. Today it was so bad - crunchy bits among mushy mess- my daughter couldn’t even eat her rice. They aren’t using rice cooker?? It’s a great shame.

Yelp
Fresh fish and great vibes, the aux is amazing. The service is really nice as well. I got the salmon, yellowfin, and tuna bowl and it was delicious. The fish melted in your mouth. The dessert was so fun and not too sweet. Also such a good deal! Great portion for price

Yelp
Walking into Taberu Nomu, my friends and I were all a bit scared. There was a strong fishy smell when I walked in that had us all worried. My friends and I played it safe, ordering the small portions, but the food turned out to be solid. The fish was fresh, and while some pieces had a slightly fishy taste, it wasn't off-putting. Beyond the food, the service was good. The staff was attentive, constantly refilling our tea. The tea itself wasn't anything special, it tasted like the Costco green tea brand. Overall, it was a good experience despite the initial hesitation. Would still recommend especially for the affordable price point.

Yelp
This spot has an omakase ambiance with counter-only seating, but serving donburi bowls. They offer various combinations of sashimi for the donburi all priced by size: $20 for small, $28 for medium, and $60 for large. I opted for the medium Katsurahama ($28), which comes with the most variety. The fish is fresh, but felt the portions were just OK. Unfortunately, the next size up is such a huge price difference. We also ordered the Matcha Sake ($40), which was delicious! I've never had a matcha flavored sake, but it had a nice matcha flavor with some sweetness that made it so easy to drink. As a matcha lover, I also had to order the Matcha Mont Blanc ($8). This was a nice and light dessert with not much red bean in it, which I liked. It's essentially whipped cream on cake, but done aesthetically.

Gloria Z.

Yelp
A small, little authentic Japanese spot for a quick bowl. Reasonably priced, filling, and delicious. The staff are really sweet. They have bar seating so not great for large groups.

Charles W.

Yelp
They do one thing and one thing well, the super popular donburi bowls. Interior is designed lowkey with service being super efficient, but the star of the show is the delicious seafood bowls they serve. I ordered the medium size bowl and it was a decent amount of food, especially for the price. Definitely recommend making a reservation as they seem quite popular amongst the younger crowd.

Jonghan L.

Yelp
Great kaisen don spot. Comes in three different sizes at $20, $28, $60. Fish was fresh. Pretty filling stuff

Karen S.

Yelp
Fresh donburi with 3 tiers of pricing. Menu seems expansive but definitely take a look at pics for comparison of portions they give you in terms of donburi toppings. I ordered the ishigaki (uni/salmon/ikura) and was given just that but the amount of uni and ikura was literally a mouthful - it felt like I got a salmon bowl with a sample of roe/uni. (For this only will I dock a star) I recommend ordering the katsurahama as this had better portions. Staff are quick, efficient and kind. Layout of the place is one long hallway with stool seating; don't expect to be seated facing friends to chat as this place you sit shoulder to shoulder. Overall a great place to go to satisfy fresh donburi bowl cravings if in manhattan!

Yelp
Food: The chirashi bowls are delicious here! The fish is fresh. Pricing goes by the size of the bowl that you get. Small is $20, medium is $28, and large is $60. They have different types of bowls with variations of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, uni, ikura, scallop, squid, and crab. The sushi rice is seasoned very well. I would definitely return to this place for the quality of the rice and fish. Dining here reminded me of Japan. Service: Service is great here. Staff are attentive and friendly. Ambiance: This is a small place with about 20 seats along the sushi counter. The restaurant is very simplistic, similar to restaurants in Japan. It's not the best for large groups because you'll be sitting in a row along the counter. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Joanna P.

Yelp
Place by the office that sells fresh Donburi bowls, this was $20 this was the katsurahama which has a variety but they have different options. they also have different sizes and this was the small, but I was full and the fish was fresh! Def coming back Instagram - @joangela.eats

Yelp
Walked in with my friend on a Wednesday evening. It was packed but they quickly found room for us. The fish is delicious - salmon was so buttery. A medium felt like the perfect amount of food. It's cute and a bit small but feels spacious because of the setup! Highly recommend.

Tiffany V.

Yelp
We came around 5pm on a weekday, there was plenty of seats and service was quick. This spot has a very sleek, clean aesthetic. 3.8/5 Katsurahama Donburi ($28)- I was very satisfied with the variety and quality of the various cuts of fish, scallop, and shrimp in this bowl. I particularly enjoyed the salmon! However the rice was incredibly mushy, overcooked, and underseasoned, which really ruined the eating experience of the dish for me.

Joe S.

Yelp
Excellent! Well priced for the quality. Donburi, like bakeries, having its moment these days in gotham. Happy days (in this sense, but no others)

Angelina G.

Yelp
We finally got to try the viral donburi bowls and they definitely did not disappoint. The fish was super fresh and tasty hehe. The small bowls were only $20 which was insane in nyc. I definitely will be back when i'm craving some delicious fresh fish!!

Richard S.

Yelp
Solid chirashi bowl spot offering up a decent value. Medium sized bowl ($28) is enough to generally satisfy most people, though they offer a small ($20) and large ($60) options as well depending on your hunger level. Although I missed the uni that some chirashi bowls offer, for $28 I can't complain too much. The fish is fresh and I especially liked the sweet shrimp that seemed a bit more unique. As a note, they give you a massive portion of sushi rice so high chances are that you'll have leftover - once you finish the fish there isn't much depth to the meal. Service is quick and efficient although not as attentive given the counter-style seating. As other folks have commented, I wish they installed places for you to hang your jacket or coat, as there isn't really a great place to store them while you enjoy your meal (especially in the winter!)

Ken L.

Yelp
I went here and ordered a takeout bowl for lunch on a weekday. The fish is fine, seems fresh and sliced nicely, but the rice was really gummy and barely edible, and didn't seem seasoned with vinegar. For a place that specializes in rice bowls, the rice has to be good. I couldn't finish all of it. The service was incredibly fast though. You can do better at the EJ (Korean) BBQ and Sushi place down on the same block, and you get all the Korean Banchan side dishes at that place.

Andrea S.

Yelp
I was slightly disappointed by this place. I was excited to try it, but a medium bowl for $28 did not seem worth it. The fish also didn't seem that fresh. I would not come back unfortunately.

Rianne A.

Yelp
Super fresh fish at a reasonable price for New York! I recommend ordering takeout as it is a little greater value. I loved the hotate and salmon- some of the freshest I've had in the city. Unfortunately they're always out of ama ebi when I go though.

Nina C.

Yelp
Did not have to wait for lunch. I got the ikura salmon tuna medium bowl and did not like it. First of all, the tuna felt like they were not good quality. The texture felt like drugstore sushi and flavor was lacking. One of the worst tunas I've had. Moreover, the rice was not good. It was overcooked and felt quite mushy. It also lacked enough sushi vinegar taste and it felt like I was just eating white rice.

Rosanna N.

Yelp
The service is quick but there isn't much seating. The fish quality was okay but the bowl was underwhelming. The takowasa was super duper spicy so I would not recommend it if you are not a fan of wasabi. The bowl was fine but not something I would go out of my way for. Some of the fish was fresh but some pieces were not. I needed to add a lot of soy sauce to make it taste good.

Sasithon M.

Yelp
The donburi was great! Some of the freshest fish we've ever had. Service so amazing. Small store.

Christine L.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for so long and finally got the chance to and it did not disappoint! I came on a Saturday night (~8:30 pm) for dinner w friends, and there was plenty of space so we were able to be seated right away at the bar. The inside is small and minimalist, basically just a very long sushi counter with around ~15-20 total seats. The menu is a cool concept- different combos & ratios of fish at the same price point depending on which of the 3 sizes you get. I split the medium Katsurahama bowl which had a bit of everything and the Takowasa (wasabi octopus). The Katsurahama bowl was delicious- particularly the scallop and shrimp, and the takowasa had a nice kick. I also got to try my friend's pickled vegetables which had a nice assortment. Food came out fast, and service was quick and efficient. I will definitely be back to try some of their other bowls!

Carmen H.

Yelp
The Donburi and drinks were amazing, loved our experience! Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Cuisine: 8 Service: 7 Decor: 7 Value: 8 Overall: 8 New Japanese donburi shop opened about a month ago. I heard that they were Japanese owned and sourced their seafood directly from Japan. Therefore I had to check it out asap. Got there around 6pm yesterday and was seated immediately. Lucky us because a long line started forming as we were dining. They specialize in Donburi, more specifically raw seafood based rice bowls, in three sizes. A small bowl will run you only $20, mudium is $28, while a large is $60. There are 11 options on the menu, with the ability to add extra sashimi. Three small appetizers round out the menu. We ordered two medium bowls, Katsurahama and Kataonami. Both were beautifully presented and tasted wonderful as well. Most importantly, the raw seafood was high quality and fresh. I would have appreciated a bit more vinegar in the rice, but it was not a big deal. The Katsurahama had a great variety of seafood. I loved that they properly served all the sashimi slices of fish at room temperature, allowing it's flavors to shine, instead of taking it right out of the fridge to serve. Only small knock for me was the Botan Ebi (Spotted Prawn), which lacked that sweetness I'm accustomed to because it's previously frozen. The Kataonami was excellent, but you don't have the variety. The Amaebi (Sweet Shrimp) on top was an addition to the bowl. I really wished that they could have given more savory Ikura (Salmon Roe) to balance the sweetness of the Zuwaigani (Snow Crab). Regardless, it was still delicious. Btw, uni was from Hokkaido. This reasonably priced donburi shop is a welcome new addition to the overwhelming amount of Japanese omakase restaurants in NYC. The prices are reasonable for the quality, just don't add too much because that's where the prices will climb. Order a drink to wash it down, and you should be able to enjoy a very satisfying meal.

Anusha G.

Yelp
I was super excited to visit this fish spot. I really like the Bar style seating and we only waited 20 minutes to be seated which was nice. However, I was super disappointed that tuna wasn't offered at all when we were there. Additionally I wasn't super impressed by the fish quality. I just didn't think the fish was anything very special. Shockingly I did enjoy the marinated wasabi octopus a lot more than expected and it goes very well with rice.

Lauren S.

Yelp

Yelp
Lovely spot in Chelsea for chirashi bowls!!! The fish was so fresh and tasty. I came with friends on a Saturday night (around 8:30 pm) and we were lucky and had no wait before being seated! It is a pretty small, counter-style seating restaurant and the ambience is simple, clean, and intimate. The service was really friendly and our food came quickly. There's a limited menu based on the size of the chirashi bowl and the kinds of raw fish you want, but it was cool that the prices of everything was the same and only the pricing of the size of the bowl varied! I got the mixed (first item on their menu) medium size ($28), and it was absolutelyyyy delicious. I loved the shrimp and yellow fin especially. The presentation was lovely and so colorful. I also highly recommend getting the pickles ($6), which includes four different types of pickles that really added color and texture to our bowl. Our friends got the wasabi octopus, which was punchy with flavor and a great texture and would elevate the bowl as well. I would love to come back again!

Tansy W.

Yelp
The fish tasted pretty fresh and good quality. I didn't love the wasabi, which was very creamy and mild (it was too subtle for me and lacked the flavor I'm used to). At $70 for a large bowl, it was a little pricey but we enjoyed it. My one gripe is that they don't appear to have a kitchen so not much in terms of offerings on the menu besides some cold sides and the bowls. We walked in at 4:30pm and half the place filled up within 30 min or so.

Katie A.

Yelp
was delish and so ambient inside! the server was so nice and checked in on us in the most non aggressive non intimidating ways, always watchful that our waters were filled and that we were cared for. the environment was so relaxing and warm to catch up with a friend that i haven't seen in months. i'd definitely go back :) the food was fresh and the small portion was a good size for me

Alex M.

Yelp
(Overall: B) - Taberu Nomu is a TikTok trending establishment for their well pricing chirashi, and surprisingly, it is quite easy to get a seat if you just call to reserve ahead of time. Their fish is high quality and very fresh, but the restaurant itself is downgraded due to the significant presence of flies within. If they buy a fly zapper, I think this could be a first class establishment. (Katsuharama: A) - This chirashi bowl is quite the feast, including classic favorites that are glistening like that salmon, maguro, and hamachi. Their squid sashimi was not chewy which was a pleasant surprise, and the sweet shrimp and ikura are always a front runner for me. High quality, fresh japanese food, would recommend. -- Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: -1 Service: E Menu: +1 Overall: +2 B Insta/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

Brian S.

Yelp
heard a lot of hype about this place but wasnt super impressed! maybe quality isnt what it used to be or it was an off day but to me none of the fish tasted very fresh. the medium bowl looked like a generous portion until i found out most of it was rice. i would recommend the small bowl which had the same amount of fish but less rice making for a more reasonable fish to rice ratio. takowasa was good and service was nice. very limited seating area and table space!

Gloria Z.

Yelp
Delicious bowls with a decent amount of fish. For $20 for a small, it's not too much food, but it's pretty delicious and fresh. The place itself is pretty small so you may have to wait if you go during busy hours. Service is very quick though. I don't recommend getting a large though as our server told us you would get more fish ordering 2 mediums than 1 large.

Maggie C.

Yelp
I'm not sure how this place has a 4.6 rating but I was super disappointed. My friend and I were super excited about this place especially since all the TikTok videos and reviews looked really good. But I guess it was all fake advertisement. I only attached a picture my friend took because I was so disappointed that I didn't even want to take pictures. We both called two days to get a reservation (at different times during the day) and no one answered. So we decided that we'll just order to go. We called in because we had questions regarding the menu: why would you offer three sizes for dining in but only one size for takeouts? And the fact that the medium size to dine in is $20 but take out is $23? It just doesn't make sense to me since I ordered through the phone. We were both excited for the uni especially since the employee that picked up the phone said it was shipped from Hokkaido. My uni was not fresh at all it was a melted pool of bad uni. The fish were all cut up wrong. It wasn't the same size, how could you have one slice of fish being thick on one side and thin on the other???? The shrimp was not fresh at all, the fact that there's black parts to it is beyond me. Also the wasabi is probably fake wasabi too since it doesn't even have taste to it. If this is what they're going to serve us because we ordered take out then just don't go to the restaurant at all. I think this place exists to deceive people and serves bad donburi to them.

Joycelyn Y.

Yelp
I love chirashi so I decided to give this place a go. We walked in on a Friday night around 5:45pm and they had plenty of seating before it got crowded at 6-6:30pm. Note that they only have sushi counter seating and it's a cozy place. Lots of different chirashi combo to choose from but I went with their most popular one - katsurahama. I got the small size and I think portion wise it was just right for me. The fish quality is high and I enjoyed the variety of fish. But the rice was mushy and a bit odd in flavor. It tainted the meal slightly. Service was excellent and quick. We finished in 30-45 mins.

Pete V.

Yelp
I had the Katsurahama don via takeout today and it was awesome! Super fresh fish, beautiful cut, and rice was cooked perfectly. They only have one takeout bowl size, but it is filling and an amazing value for $23. Staff was friendly and delivered my bowl in less than 5 minutes! Highly recommend and looking forward to coming back soon to try more :)

Pinhwa S.

Yelp
I had such a great experience at Taberu Nomu! We tried two medium-sized chirashi bowls--the Yonaha Maehama and Enoshima--and everything was incredibly fresh. The Yonaha Maehama had hotate, ikura, ika, botan ebi, ama ebi, and shiso, while the Enoshima featured salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and shiso. Everything was so fresh and delicious, and the side of uni was perfect! The space is simple and clean. The price are fair for the high quality seafood. We were pleasantly surprised by how fast the service was. Highly recommend this spot if you want great food at a reasonable price.

Vivian L.

Yelp
I'm glad that we were able to make a reservation by calling! The restaurant is small with mostly counter seating. The service was friendly and quick. I ordered Enoshima which came with salmon, yellowtail, and tuna, and I added on a side order of eel. The fish quality was good, and the yellowtail was my favorite. The portion size of the eel was small, and not worth the extra cost. The rice was only okay, and tasted more like regular rice. Overall we enjoyed our meal, but we are not rushing to come back.

Esther P.

Yelp
the sashimi was fresh but the price jump to the large is actually crazy lol it's a bar area set up and can fill up quickly the food came out pretty quickly but you could kinda tell they were trying to get people to eat and leave quickly idk if i would come again, the price feels alittle steep for me

Clarissa L.

Yelp
This is a very small restaurant with counter seating only. We came around noon on Sunday and were able to get seated without waiting, but after we did a line started building up. The fish was average, and the bowl was mostly rice. The restaurant itself also smelled very fishy and had a few fruit flies which made the meal a little less appetizing. The presentation of the dish looks nice for Instagram, but I wouldn't wait too long for a seat here.

Derek W.

Yelp
Food was good and pretty for the gram!. They make the bowls right in front of you. The place is small and it kind of a bar side sitting with not a lot of space so be prepared for people to walk around you all the time. The service was okay, they mostly leave you alone when you eat so I guess if that's your thing then it's cool. The seafood was fresh and they provide a generous amount of food. I would definitely come here for the gram worthy pics.

Kristy L.

Yelp
Got takeout, was super tasty and fresh. There was so much variety in the bowl. Would definitely go again.

Susie L.

Yelp
We did take out so please take this review with a grain of salt. The takeout bowls are $23 and a little larger than the small size. The rice wasn't very seasoned and the fish quality was amazing? There was a decent amount of fish for the price tho! I think this would be a really good casual lunch spot in the city. The interior of the restaurant looked super cozy and cute too! I think realistically I would rate this place closer to a 3.5 if possible.

Janet L.

Yelp
Went to check as I had heard about it a while back. Service was good but it's a small shop. They take reservations over the phone. I got their most popular bowl. I did enjoy the flavors but wish the bowl was a lil bigger it is a pricey end

Wuttichai K.

Yelp
I'm a Chirashi lover The medium size is good amount of potion. Fresh and fast service I love the variety of my donburi chirashi bowls

Michelle T.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place but unfortunately left a bit disappointed. Staff is nice but service is slow, I would say this place is not really that great of value. The fish quality is just ok, doesn't taste that fresh (particularly the tuna which seemed to be end pieces). The presentation of the bowl is nice and the inside feels cozy since it's small (but they don't seat that many people). They seem to be reservation based on the weekend FYI.

Elaine A.

Yelp
My friend was raving about this place and brought me here to check it out! The staff greeted us with hot tea and were super nice. It's a small place but it serves great food! We both got the (~$20) small ishigaki donburi which has salmon, uni, and ikura (salmon caviar). Don't be fooled by the small portion because it's super filling! Everything was really fresh and delicious and there wasn't any fishy taste/smell. Will definitely come back to try out the other donburi!

Kammy F.

Yelp
3 different sizes donburi are served in Taberu Nomu. Price range is from 20/28/60. We came in Thursday night 7pm and it's quite busy with 90% of occupancy. It took a round 25 minutes to receive the order. Good for a casual dinning

Danyang Z.

Yelp
Call for a reservation on the weekends or expect 30-60 minute wait times. I thought the fish was fresh and overall it was pretty tasty. I recommend getting a medium and then adding on side orders of extra seafood. Not sure if I'd go out of my way to come here but would def swing by if in the area.
