"Before H Mart came to the East Village, there was Sunrise Mart - a Japanese grocery store on Stuyvesant Street where you can get cookies from Hokkaido, uni, matcha powder, and several different Kit Kats flavors. We love to walk here and pick up everything from wasabi sesame crackers to a couple of reheatable shumai. Plus, you have to take an elevator to get to the store, which is the closest thing you can get to riding a roller coaster while your Slack emoji is still green." - hannah albertine

"The Soho location of New York's most extensive supermarket for Japanese groceries. As they import goods from Japan, Sunrise also procures top notch fresh produce. The connected restaurant upstairs serves unpretentious sushi, ramen and bento boxes that rivals fancier Japanese restaurants in the city." - Julia Guo

Love coming here for groceries. They have so many great products at good prices. Don’t sleep on The food either. It’s very tasty and fresh. Give them a try!

Sunrise Market is an absolute gem, especially for lovers of Japanese cuisine! This market offers a fantastic variety of fresh produce, specialty Japanese items, and ready-to-eat meals that cater to a wide range of tastes. One tip for first-timers: make sure to get there early if you're aiming for their popular lunch items. These delicious offerings tend to sell out quickly, and it's easy to see why – everything is made fresh daily and bursting with authentic flavors. The market is well-organized and spotlessly clean, making for a pleasant shopping experience. The selection of fruits and vegetables is top-notch, always fresh and vibrant. Their range of Japanese groceries is impressive, featuring everything from high-quality sushi-grade fish to a wide array of unique snacks and beverages you might not find elsewhere. The ready-to-eat meals are a highlight. From sushi rolls to bento boxes, everything is prepared with great care and attention to detail. It's clear that the staff take pride in their work, and it shows in the quality of the food. Their homemade onigiri (rice balls) and freshly made tempura are not to be missed! Speaking of the staff, they are always friendly and helpful, ready to assist with any questions or recommendations. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Sunrise Market is definitely worth a visit. It's a food lover's paradise, especially if you're a fan of Japanese cuisine. You won't be disappointed!

I know when you are in a big city, finding certain items especially ingredients as well as some specialty foods is hard to find. If you are looking for Japanese / Asian ingredients and food look no further as this place will probably have it. They also dish out hot foods such as Japanese curry, rice bowls, and noodles. In the fridge section they have grab and go sushi all at a very reasonable price. My local friends might be wondering why are a couple of Asians who live in Hawaii where there are tons of Asian things is coming into this store. Well there are some secret ingredients hard to find that my better half had to grab. Sorry I'm not telling you what it is as everyone might buy it all up.

Good place to have a quick Japanese meal! I ordered shrimp tempura udon. The weird thing was the shrimp was heavily seasoned with salt and pepper! This was the first time I tasted salt and pepper on shrimp tempura (not ebi fry) and udon soup. I would ask the cook if it has salt and pepper next time before I order.

Such a wide variety! You can find almost everything you know of Japan here. Comparing to the other branch this one looks more like a convenient store. Fresh produce is more limited but you’ll find the most typical stuff. Frozen section is as packed as the other branch. The most beautiful section is the ready-to-eat and drinks. Sushi rolls, bento boxes, poke, salad with cooked protein, tonkatsu rice bowl. AND hot ramen!! There are seatings upstairs and a microwave for eat in. It can get a little packed during lunch time because it’s probably one of the cheap and healthy lunch spots in Soho.

One of the best japanese grocery stores and eateries I've been to! Reasonably priced, friendly staff, delicious soups, quick service!

Great place for a takeout lunch! They had a lot of bento box and bowl options, like teriyaki chicken/salmon to karaage to tofu to unagi. For some reason, only some of their ready to go meals were warm. I tried the unagi don, and it was exactly what I wanted: sweet eel sauce, tender eel, and white rice. I will be back to try more things in the future!!

I was told it is SUPER SUPER long line during lunch hours. Well i get to enjoy this place all to ourselves during dinner hour. It's very very empty around 8PM but it closes at 9 or something. I think a walk passed this place a couple time and not noticing it. Only if I knew. Their noodle selection is amazing but a bit price for such a low key setting.
