Where To Take A WFH Snack Break In The East Village

"Before H Mart came to the East Village, there was Sunrise Mart - a Japanese grocery store on Stuyvesant Street where you can get cookies from Hokkaido, uni, matcha powder, and several different Kit Kats flavors. We love to walk here and pick up everything from wasabi sesame crackers to a couple of reheatable shumai. Plus, you have to take an elevator to get to the store, which is the closest thing you can get to riding a roller coaster while your Slack emoji is still green." - hannah albertine

On the Grid : Sunrise Mart

"The Soho location of New York's most extensive supermarket for Japanese groceries. As they import goods from Japan, Sunrise also procures top notch fresh produce. The connected restaurant upstairs serves unpretentious sushi, ramen and bento boxes that rivals fancier Japanese restaurants in the city." - Julia Guo

Great place to go for a nice rice bowl, when you’re starving in soho. I’ve been here in July! I was going through NY photos and remembered that i loved this Sunrise Mart. There were a bunch of Japanese drinks and a beautiful section is the ready-to-eat and drinks. Sushi rolls, bento boxes, poke, salad with cooked protein, tonkatsu rice bowl, ramen as well well. I had a tonkatsu rice bowl with fried eggs on top and it was AMAZING. My friend ate the tuna sushi rolls and he told me it was DELICIOUS and really nice. There are seatings and a microwave for eat in. I noticed the place is quite big inside, there were about 5 tables. It was a little packed during lunch time because it’s probably one of the cheap and healthy lunch spots in Soho. 🍱 After this lunch I was able to look around more and visit places like Brandy Melville, Cotton on, and Gentle Monster. 🩵

Love coming here for groceries. They have so many great products at good prices. Don’t sleep on The food either. It’s very tasty and fresh. Give them a try!

Very cute shop with lots of imported Japanese groceries. They have a nice lofted seating area where you can eat lunch or drink your beverage, it's a nice quiet place to chat. My boyfriend LOVES the french fries, which I guess are legendary. I don't but I do love their sushi, which may not be fancy but is made with care and love!

I enjoy going here for lunch as they serve fresh flavorful food that conveniently is displayed for busy working adults on their lunch. However while I was checking out it slipped my mind to grab a bottle of water. I ask the cashier, Vivien, that I just purchased $25 worth of food and forgot to buy a water and she said “it doesn’t matter you still have to make the $10 minimum” and so I went ahead to grab items that makes the minimum and when I come to the register she grills me and rolls her eyes. You never know what someone is going through but my god there’s not of ounce of good customer service in her body. Won’t be coming back for a hot minute.

Great selection of Japanese groceries and snacks. They also offer hot food in the back, and there’s seating available upstairs.

I know when you are in a big city, finding certain items especially ingredients as well as some specialty foods is hard to find. If you are looking for Japanese / Asian ingredients and food look no further as this place will probably have it. They also dish out hot foods such as Japanese curry, rice bowls, and noodles. In the fridge section they have grab and go sushi all at a very reasonable price. My local friends might be wondering why are a couple of Asians who live in Hawaii where there are tons of Asian things is coming into this store. Well there are some secret ingredients hard to find that my better half had to grab. Sorry I'm not telling you what it is as everyone might buy it all up.

Such a wide variety! You can find almost everything you know of Japan here. Comparing to the other branch this one looks more like a convenient store. Fresh produce is more limited but you’ll find the most typical stuff. Frozen section is as packed as the other branch. The most beautiful section is the ready-to-eat and drinks. Sushi rolls, bento boxes, poke, salad with cooked protein, tonkatsu rice bowl. AND hot ramen!! There are seatings upstairs and a microwave for eat in. It can get a little packed during lunch time because it’s probably one of the cheap and healthy lunch spots in Soho.
