At Schønnemann, a Copenhagen institution since 1877, indulge in hearty smørrebrød and schnapps amid a charmingly historic, vibrant atmosphere.
"An exceptional vignette of Danish food and drink, this spot keeps the local schnapps flowing alongside seafood-focused open face sandwiches that are emblematic of the region. Since 1877, Restaurant Schønnemann has built up a deserved reputation for serving some of the finest smoørrebrød in the capital. The menu allows for easy sampling of signature local flavors, including the sweeter smaller shrimp found in this part of the world. In a dish this simple, details are everything and they’re fastidiously on-point here. Silky smoked salmon, smoked eel tartare, and white fish sit atop the Danish canvas of rye cradled by kitschy fishy themed porcelain. The bread is baked in house, many of the cheeses are aged in nearby caves, and the herring is cured and aged by the expert chefs. The dark-wood interior has an air of Old World grandeur, making for an especially atmospheric lunch. Know Before You Go Reservations are essential, so be sure to plan ahead of your visit." - dibbiejane, Johan SWE
"This is the ultimate lunch spot for smørrebrød, best paired with a local beer. Both the interior and the smørrebrød are old-school, yet the vibe is fun, with servers cracking jokes and guests singing as they down shots of snaps. Come hungry because portions are generous in dishes like the classic fried plaice filets with remoulade or the impressive tower of Greenland shrimp with red and white mayonnaise. Other popular options include chicken salad, tartare, and roast beef. The restaurant is immensely popular so don’t forget to book ahead." - Anna Norström, Gabe Ulla

"GO HERE: for an old-school, as in 1877, Copenhagen experience: smørrebrød. You know all those open-face sandwiches on grainy bread you’ve been seeing for the last few years? They take their inspiration from this Danish sandwich place, which makes delicious works of art out of Scandi treats like smoked and pickled herring, seedy bread, and potatoes. ORDER THE: the herring plate of the day; potato sandwich with smoked mayo and fried onions; and smoked eel with scrambled egg and chives. The 110 smørrebrød combinations pair well with the 140 schnapps and aquavits. THE VIBE IS: men who lunch. PRACTICAL STUFF: Open for lunch Monday through Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (though the kitchen closes at 4 p.m.). Closed Sunday. Book online; this place is always full. —Christine Muhlke" - Condé Nast
