Overall, very happy with this one. I'd stay again. The hotel is an old bldg, so the rooms are grand in size (very spacious and I'd estimate 14' ceilings). The bathroom was also the size of a NYC studio (no joke). Decor is traditional, so it feels like you're staying at an old mansion or your rich uncle's house. Easy access to 2 subway stops. Only downside: a fuse was blown and it affected the entire floor. Little funny when you think about it.

This hotel ist situated close to the famous Rothenbaumchaussee with two main subway line quite close, which make it a good starting point when traveling without a car. The excellent breakfast with a very broad range of food is worth mentioning. Unfortunately the furniture of the rooms is very old-fashioned and could need some renovation in the near future, but if you do not like modern design hotels, then this might be your place.

Romantik Das Hotel Smolka is one of the hidden gems of Hamburg. Tucked away in Eppendorf District on Ise Str., it blends with the historic buildings in the area. The hotel brings back the old grand hotel feeling. A red carpet dons the walkway into the hotel. We were greeted with a friendly smile and a room key. That's right, an actual key. None of that electronic card key nightmare. (We all know that the card key can be a pistol if not activated properly - instant fun-trip killer.) The staff is competent, caring and best of all they smile. Amazing what a smile can do for people who have been flying for 12 hours like we were. The greeted us everyday both coming and going. The room we had was decorated with rich colors. The bed was comfortable. Our room had two sets of large windows, so natural light and the breeze was wonderful. There was only one drawback for us, the elevator. It is a little small (not really a complaint), and my partner is a bit claustrophobic. The stairs wind, so going up those drew one back to the charm of the hotel. Their breakfast selection was amazing. The meats, cheeses and breads were clearly fresh everyday. They had a fruit salad that was so simple, but tasted like it took days to prepare. The mix of cantaloupe, watermelon and orange with a host of other fruits married well together. The tea selection was impressive as well. And I cannot say it enough, the service was top notch. When I go home to Hamburg, I generally stay with my folks. I am positive that tradition will end since the Romantik Hotel Das Smolka has spoiled me.
