"At first glance, you’ll notice the tiny European car parked in the middle of this little shop in the old-world-like Pasanella & Sons. But you’ll really be sold by the 400-odd wines on offer, from better-known vineyards to little known European labels—there’s also a great array of accessories, like gorgeous crystal and antique corkscrews. Beyond selling bottles, they do fun area events, like tastings in the garden out back and sunset drinks on the deck of the schooner Pioneer, parked in the Seaport nearby."

So, ten years ago I snuck into the iconic car and honked its horn. I was shortly kicked out of Pasanella & Son Vinters. I want to share my deepest apologies. Attached, is the photo of the infamous car honking. Papa bless.

Great shop! Incredibly helpful staff and great selection. Can’t wait to return!

The operative word for these guys seems to be VALUE. I am tired of going into a wine store and looking at expensive looking labels, only to find out I overpaid for not so good wine. Pasanella has plenty of affordable, very drinkable bottles. They are also adventurous in their choices, so if I don't recognize a certain grape or brand, the approachable staff is always very helpful in their recommendations. Best in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Stopped in this unique wine store while visiting FIDI and the seaport. It's really cool! Loved the decor and the choices of wine. Some very pricey! I was looking for a casual, reasonable priced bottle of Pinot Grigio. They had 2 to choose from. I ended up with one priced at $13.99 they was very good and recommended by the salesgirl. Very interesting wine shop to visit!

Yelp
"A bottle of white, a bottle of red, perhaps a bottle of rosé instead?" When it comes to wines this is pretty much all I know, so when I passed by this place I was intimidated. I passed by a third time heading to The Paris Restaurant and I had to go in and face my fear of embarrassing myself by my ignorance of wine. (Also there was no one else in the store). The staff was helpful and answer all my questions in a friendly way and not talk above me. Their selection is huge and dazzling. I was not ready to buy a bottle that day but I browsed a little and plan to come back very soon.

Yelp
Alan was amazing we had to go back twice in one day bcuz his customer service was unparalleled. Thank you Alan for the great experience.. will be back!

Yelp
I have used Pasanella for a few different corporate events. I have been a member of their wine explorers club. I used to work nearby and stop in at least once a week. I still go over whenever I am in the neighborhood. Marco and his crew have amazing taste - in wines and everything else. If you are looking for something specific, if you are looking to be surprised, if you are just looking for a really good bottle of wine - put yourself in their hands. They won't steer you wrong.

Yelp
Great wine retailer. Decent bio-dynamic wine selection with good customer service. Retailer gave us quick overview of their stock on hand and offered suggestions. Additionally our host suggested trying a wine bar around the block which was fantastic. i wished this place was located near me!! Thanks for your hospitality. cheers

Yelp
Stopped here for a late-afternoon wine tasting with a group of fellow Yelpers, and we were wholly impressed. Michael, the shop's sommelier, knows his stuff. Not only has he completed one level of somm training, but he spent 7 years scouring Europe for the best hidden vineyards and has near-encyclopedic knowledge of various regions in Italy, France, Spain, etc. It was just fun listening to him talk. Seriously. For every bottle of wine that he selects to offer his patrons, he samples approximately sixty. He humorously described his Sunday process of sitting in the back room with tasting note cards and a spitoon, calling in representatives from aspiring wineries one-by-one for their "audition." What can I say...his perfectionist palate benefits his customers, as mediocre wine isn't in his vocabulary. I was able to sample two whites: a 2012 Fontezoppa Verdicchio di Matelica ($13) and a 2012 Azienda Agricola San Salvatore Falanghina Campania ($22). I also tried their house rose, the 2012 Pasanella & figlio Rosato ($11). All three wines were spectacular...and affordable. I took home one of each and impressed a group of very picky ladies at their weekly wine party. Aside from wine, the shop has a limited selection of high-end liquors on its back wall as well as assorted wine trinkets by the tasting station that the owner have collected over the years. Check this place out if you're near South Street and the FiDi areas. They deserve your business.

Yelp
Great little place with lots of hidden gems. Wines, ciders, and drinking related antiques. Very cool, fun, and a great selection at a reasonable price point. If you're looking for organically sourced wines and ciders, just some additional reasons to stop in for a look.

Yelp
I stopped in a few weeks ago and I have to say, what an incredible store!. The staff is super helpful and the selection is really well rounded. The room is very nice and the wines are spread out so you don't get too claustrophobic. They have a back room that is really charming and can be used for private events. I went in on a Saturday and there was a tasting going on!

Yelp
Since I returned to working downtown I have been reacquainting myself with some of my old haunts. Pasanella & Son is just as good as I remembered. Not a huge store but they have a well curated selection and very friendly and knowledgable staff. I was browsing and talking about the rye selections with one of the staff. He admitted that he only tasted it in a manhattan and had not had it straight. I like that he was honest and didn't try to sell me based on a write up. That's why I bought the Ragtime rye from Brooklyn. I will discuss with him when I return. Located near the seaport on South Street in the shadow of the FDR drive. Great wine store!

Yelp
This really is one of the finest wine shops anywhere you'll find in New York City. Not only is the space absolutely gorgeous (even after being flooded with 10 feet of water due to Super Storm Sandy, but the staff is top notch and can easily point you in the direction of your perfect bottle of wine no matter what you're looking for. Need something to pair with Seamless Thai food? Trying to make an impression on that all important 3rd date? Celebrating a professional milestone? Trust that Pasanella and Son have your back. It's a bit tricky to get to if you don't live in south LES or FiDi, but if you ever find yourself near you should remember to pop in for a looksie.

Yelp
Clearly, living in San Francisco for the past five years turned me into a wine snob as I've been complaining about NYC's poor wine selection and service at restaurants (with a few exceptions... Inoteca the biggest) since my return three weeks ago. I discovered Pasenella & Sons, first on Yelp, then on foot, given this little delicious little spot is just a few blocks from me at the South Street Seaport. The selection is just that: selective.... highly. Yet, the price range, varietal and region is diverse. The staff is very warm and friendly and they even deliver! I've discovered a few choice wines: my favorite being the Burlotto Rosato, or around $17/bottle and the Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano, for about $16/bottle. Here, I don't feel intimidated at all by the Italian wines. I have yet to attend one of their tasting events, but definitely looking forward to it.

Yelp
Wandered back to this shop and realized three stars was too low a rating for this place. Their selection is brilliant. Sure, they're lacking in under $10 bottles, but drinkable wine is hard to find at that price, and the few they have in that range are entirely drinkable. In the $10-$15 range you can do VERY well here. The selection is carefully chosen. There might not be a bad bottle in the store. There are a large number of special bottles. These people really care about wine. The same care is put into their liquor selection, which features a number of hard to find liquors from Europe. This place is a delight for someone who is really into wine, but the selection allows for someone completely ignorant to easily get a good bottle by practically picking at random. You can't say that about too many wine shops, can you? This shop is worth going out of your way for. I'll continue to do so. Nice work, Pasanella and Son!

Yelp
About all you could ask for in a neighborhood wine spot. P&S offers a good selection of wine (and some spirits), a comfortably modern decor and a very helpful and friendly staff. Like Trader Joe's, they carry a few bottles of their own wine, which are very affordable, but unlike TJ's, their wine is actually good. The store is organized by types of wine and also by food to pair it with. Rather than a food, we were looking for a light white wine to accompany a classy afternoon of rooftop drinking - and the guy hooked us up with a perfect $18 bottle (ok, we bought 3 bottles). P&S also offers some small misc items - flasks, wine openers etc, so it's good to remember if you're in the area and need a last minute gift.

Alice G.

Yelp
I am by no means a wine expert, but I mostly want to focus my praise on the aesthetics/experience of the store. It is quite charming and rustic with its exposed brick interior and vintage car smack in the middle of the store. The use of various other props and gift boxes also contribute to this cozy atmosphere. Also on giant sheets of wrinkley brown paper, there are adorable illustrations of "game," "fish," "pasta," and "vegetables" with recommendations to go with each. The selection is not huge, but I think there is something for everyone if you're open-minded and not super picky. I find myself frequenting the best selections under $10 section ;). What I also love is the little blurb they have next to most of the wines detailing the many flavors of each. Definitely helpful for wine amateurs like me. It is just fun to browse in this place. If you sign up for their mailing list, they'll let you know of wine tastings and other special events. Friendly staff as well. And dog-friendly. Yay.

Julianne B.

Yelp
Wow - this store is really amazing looking inside! I attended a tasting here and was really impressed with the wine store and also the tasting room in the back. It is easy to see that there is a lot of attention paid to detail here...everything from the wine selection to the decoration seems to be chosen with care. I would highly recommend purchasing a gift from Pasanella. They have some really cool gift ideas and very nice packaging - pretty wooden boxes tied with purple ribbon. Even if it's out of your way, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I love it, it's beautiful, well-stocked, well lit, gorgeous tiles, salvaged cabinetry and brick walls. Fantastic view near the water and under the bridge. I love their selection of vintage stoppers and corkscrews.

Barbara W.

Yelp
Great hidden gem of a wine and spirits store in the old Fish District in lower Manhattan. Have a decent selection of wines with a price range that meets all budgets. The woman (possibly) co-owner provided excellent customer service. I would certainly be a regular if I lived in the neighborhood.

Paul D.

Yelp
So, I skipped the wines and headed to the spirits. A very nice selection of some of the more rated spirits in each class. I was on a vermouth hunt and happily stumbled across the ever lovely Capano Antica Vermouth, the full Dolin range and after some nice suggestions from the staff, was introduced to the Cocchi Vermouth di Torino. Knowledgable staff, beautiful selection, good prices. Location means that this is definitely a spot for the locals, but that is not a bad thing either.

Michael K.

Yelp
Really enjoyable wine shop to visit. The Italian selection is great. They have even had their own wine at times. Staff is very friendly and helpful, and if you read Marco's book you feel like you know everyone.

Lora D.

Yelp
We couldn't be luckier to have a store like that in our neighborhood! The owner of the store ( who lives in Italy, by the way) designed the store himself and he did an awesome job! Very tasteful and very unique, with a great wine selection for any price range! What I appreciate about this the place the most is that you can come and ask for a wine that compliments Italian sausage or lobster raviolis. And these guys will find you the perfect bottle. What is also important, that I don't feel pushed into buying expensive wines. If I want just a bottle of wine for dinner, they won't show you $70 bottles, they start from $15 or so. We had friends from Queens coming to the City just for a bottle of wine from Pasanella & Son!

Christopher B.

Yelp
HANDS DOWN THE BEST WINE SPOT IN THE CITY!!!! Staff is friendly and VERY helpful, even if you know nothing about wine. Just tell them what you are eating, or what kind of party you are having and they will nail it for you. Even their $10 or $15 bottles are amazing. Done and done, don't delay!

Judy V.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem, and as a resident of a nearby neighborhood, I am all for supporting businesses that need our support, especially after Hurricane Sandy. The owners are very knowledgeable about their wines, and the space in the back of the store is a perfect setting for having an intimate dinner - attended the birthday dinner of a friend's husband, and we had a lovely selection of wines paired with food from restaurants in the area.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Love the store! Love the staff! And love the store's own "Bianco". Marco and Ryan are knowledgeable and friendly. They also have great events like tastings at the store and on the East River via the Seaport Museum's Schooner. This would also be a great place for a wedding rehearsal or bridal shower! The back room is beautiful.

Jonas M.

Yelp
Neither the most expansive selection nor convenient location, but Pasanella & Son Vinters is a solid wine store in the Financial District. Their selections for Italian and California/West Coast wine are slightly larger than their French, Spanish, German, and Austrian wines (these regions are literally in cabinets in the back). Out front, there is a carefully edited selection of wines from $15 - $50, and a parked car (which is pretty cool). The staff are friendly and reasonably knowledgable: Marco was able to discuss the differences between pinot noir from Oregon, California, and Austria. His wine recs were solid too: for a value Oregon Pinot Noir, he suggested 2007 O'Reilly's ($23) which is about the cellar floor price for getting decent one without it ending up like a jammy, fruity mess like California Zinfandel or Petit Syrah. They have tastings on Sunday coinciding with the New Amsterdam farmer's market, so it's worth poking your head in while you're there.

George C.

Yelp
The car at the front wins the wine game. Small shop but good selection (especially Roses per Drink Up on Hulu) and some solid values from friendly staff.

Gina C.

Yelp
You can come here not knowing anything about wine, and Ryan will help you out without being pretentious or trying to rob you blind (a rarity in the city). In few words, he knows his stuff and makes recommendations and suggestions/alternatives if they don't carry that particular type (which were spot-on). Price-wise, the word "value" comes to mind. The "wines under $15" table during the holidays featured extremely affordable wine that in no way tasted its price, but like all places, you get what you pay for. THANK YOU RYAN!

Greg B.

Yelp
My favorite wine store in NYC. An amazing staff and a perfectly-edited selection wines in a lovely store. They have a beautiful party room in the back and can arrange catering and spirits for you.

Jackie M.

Yelp
A gem in the South Street Seaport. I walked by this wine shop many a time and assumed (by the location, the look and the vintage Fiat inside the store) that this place would be pretentious and over-priced. I was so wrong. An great selection of affordable wine (including their own brand) and a knowledgable, helpful staff that didn't make me feel like a serial killer for saying a usually only drink Yellowtail wine. Check this place out for sure!!!!

Whitney B.

Yelp
Great place with great wine. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. We usually go in and tell him what we we are eating or doing and he picks out great wine for us. He has never been wrong so far! The next best thing is that it is very affordable as well. They have wine tastings quite often and other fun events too. Never disappointed when we go to Pasanella.

J S.

Yelp
What awesome decor and a beautiful wine shop with an awesome italian mini car in the middle of the shop.

monte b.

Yelp
This wine store is out of the way - way out of the way for me and yet... I travel here on a regular basis because it is that good. Ryan stocks amazing wines, and they will get you what you are looking for as well. Not to mention the fact that they'll keep track of what you're into. and the aesthetics of the place is BEYOND any other wine store in Manhattan. I love the feeling, the old car, the floor, and also... weirdly important- some of the bottles of wine I have tried because the labels are so beautiful. They don't carry ugly wine. The Loire valley is clearly a favorite here, so I am particularly biased as I tend to like this region beyond compare. The only reason this is 4 and not 5 stars is that I like a lot of southern Italian wine for winter drinking and they could expand that a bit.... mmnnn wine.... think I'll head out on my bike right now and pick up a couple bottles from Pasanella...

Hector O.

Yelp
Great Service very knowledgeable staff. Their house white and rose are delicious

Angela D.

Yelp
Beautiful store with a narrow but exquisite selection. I'd forgotten that I'd left them a bad review, but it ended up being a misunderstanding. I love this store now.

L M.

Yelp
Love this place. Staff is very knowledgeable and willing to take the time to find out exactly what you're looking for and need. As others have said, they have a good selection and a wide range of prices, which is wonderful. They're an asset to the neighborhood.

D. M.

Yelp
Love it! Went there last night for the first time. The sales man held 3 bottles for me at the counter- super nice and friendly. Nice selection and well organized with knowledgeable staff. Excellent place to find special wines for the holidays.

AJ ..

Yelp
While it's not huge, Pasanella's selection of wine is good. Pasanella also stock other liquors. I was able to find and pick up an Italian amaro from the Marche I hadn't seen before. Prices seemed fair. Very good service.

Anya Z.

Yelp
Amazing space, wonderful service and buying advise.. very difficult place to get a bad bottle of wine, their selection is highly curated.

Andy S.

Yelp
Non pretentious friendly folks. Great set up, great store. Some great value wines as well as good for those special occasions. A favorite of Ms. Martha Stewart, you will know why when you ask for a good weekday casual wine and get an honest answer. Well done...a model for small businesses.

Amanda S.

Yelp
They have a wonderful table highlighting wines in the $10-$20ish range; selected a riesling and it's stellar (Leitz/Dragonstone). The staff was equally wonderful. Very knowledgeable (mentioned that the staff wrote most of the reviews of the wines displayed, rather than using the winery's marketing materials) and very friendly (offered my dog a biscuit!). They have a car in the shop too, nice touch!

C G.

Yelp
visiting the store is always a treat! It's beautiful and has an amazing selection of wines. The staff are helpful and their prices range from very affordable to extremely special. The icing on the cake is the gorgeous back room where they show movies, have tastings, parties and occasionally cheese classes with Murrays.
