Discover the New Museum, a sleek contemporary art hub in Nolita, showcasing daring exhibits and emerging artists, plus stunning views of Lower Manhattan.
"Although the New Museum was founded in 1977, it gained renewed attention in 2007 with the opening of its Bowery location—a seven-story building that looks like blocks stacked on top of each other. The museum contains all things contemporary and modern, in all mediums, and tends to champion lesser known artists (recent shows have included Australian painter Helen Johnson, L.A.-based filmmaker Kahlil Joseph, and Philadelphia installation artist Alex Da Corte). Exhibits can be hit or miss, and enjoyment of them tends to be wildly subjective but that's part of what makes the museum such a vibrant, exciting, and diverse space." - Andrea Whittle, Charlie Hobbs
"This is a home for celebrating contemporary art and helping to foster the next wave of makers. The museum looks to break up the concepts surrounding the collection structure of the traditional art museum." - Visualized
"New York's New Museum dates from 1977, but for the first 30 years of its existence it was an itinerant institution, moving between different leased buildings. In 2007, it finally found a permanent home—a 58,700-square-foot structure on the Bowery designed by one of Japan 's most acclaimed architectural firms, SANAA. In a city with a number of spaces dedicated to modern and contemporary art, the New Museum can be relied on to consistently push the envelope and go further than others in highlighting emerging artists from around the world. The exhibitions may be challenging—often addressing divisive political and social issues—and they are sometimes confounding, but for everyone interested in current art today, it is a must on a visit to New York. (If the weather is good after you have looked at the works, make sure to step out onto the top-floor roof-deck to take in the views of Lower Manhattan.)"
