"Stay at your first masseria, Hotel Montegusto, a gorgeous stone farmhouse that overlooks the Alta Murgia National Park. It’s small, like eight rooms, and the owner lives on the property. To me, a really good masseria is defined by its owner, who should either live there or be at the property every day — there’s that sense of hospitality and skin in the game."

Used to good restaurants, we were happy to discover Montegusto last Tuesday, just before our visit to the Castel del Monte. I'll be honest: what we ordered was very good. However, the service was very unpleasant and disrespectful. We felt very uncomfortable, unwelcome, as if we had nothing to do there. Moreover our Italian is not very good, so we spoke in English: which didn't help to feel better. We would have liked to taste something else, but this attitude put us off and we left after a primi. If client bothers, why working in a restaurant? That's why I can't recommend this place. It's a real shame.

We really liked our restaurant experience here. The food and wine were delicious and Nicolas was great. I wish that I could review the restaurant separately because it was elegant and well run. Unfortunately, our hotel stay was a disappointment. We had really looked forward to staying at Montegusto but when we arrived, we found used dental floss and a moldy plate on the desk in our room; the only staff person seemed overwhelmed and unsure of himself; and the breakfast was uninspired-burnt croissants, coffee, and orange juice (although the orange juice was fresh and good). Maybe it's because it was mid May and the high season had not yet started for them but I think if that's the case, they should just close down until June. This is a beautiful setting and could be a great hotel, but it was an expensive mistake for us.

Unpretentious bar/restaurant with a fantastic castle view. Walking distance from the Castel del Monte. Don't even bother going to the osteria at its feet, just a tourists rip off. Montegusto is authentic instead, with kind service and food good enough that even locals go there to enjoy. Inexpensive. Two bottles of rose, two baguettes, a salad and some appetizers just above 50 euros. Highly recommended.

You can view the magnificent Castle by sitting una nice courtyard. Well organized, parking, well furnished rooms that look much younger that the 5 years of the hotel birth, friendly service. An experience to be repeated!

My son and I are touring southern Italy on two motorbikes and this is the fifth Agriturismo place we’ve stayed at. They just keep getting better. This one, the Monte Gusto, Andria in the hills above Bari was great - the rooms, breakfast and dinner the night before with excellent great value wines. The friendly staff, including one lady with fluent English, couldn’t do enough for us. Excellent and great value for money.

A fine restaurant and bar, combining tradition and modernity at the foot of the famous Castel del Monte. Although it was the Sunday of "Ferragosto" the most crowded in the Italian summer, as far as I concerned, and we hadn't booked a table, we sat quickly and the service was good. Good value for money!
