Tucked behind an expensive treasure store of delightful treats are five "secret" tables in an alcove peppered with Keith Harings. Dining here makes you feel like you're a New Yorker who holds the keys to the true hidden city. While definitely a splurge of a dinner, I took one of my best friends here for his birthday. I don't know how the chef manages to make all that magic behind a little counter in a shop. The wine/champagne pairing is absolutely worth ordering.
Scallop, Cauliflower, Mussels, Clams, Kaluga Royal Amber - gorgeous way to start dinner, we popped that little tart into our mouth, lifted that shell, and enjoyed our elevated soup and crackers. Fanciest soup in the fanciest bowl.
Caviar Butter, Sourdough Bread - The butter is shaped into a blossom and filled with caviar. The birthday boy slathered that butter all over his bread and destroyed it (he wasn't going to waste a single bite)
King Salmon, Beetroot, Dill, Yoghurt, Rye, Keta - Gorgeous dish, we did find the caviar in this dish to be a tad salty for the rest of the dish, but still very much enjoyed it.
Coddled Egg, Smoked Eel, Brown Butter Hollandaise, Siberian Sturgeon - where do I start? I want the egg bowl this is in, I want a never ending supply of brown butter hollandaise sauce on tap, I want to only eat eggs from Yellow Bell Farms for the rest of my life. This.dish.is.everything. Sweet, rich, buttery, creamy (swoon). we actually looked up whether it would be feasible for us to pick up eggs from this farm, and you can (if you're willing to drive a couple of hours).
Lobster, Tokyo Turnip, Pickled Onion, Sauce Vin Jaune, White Sturgeon - another delightful dish, I mean it's lobster and caviar, 'nuff said. Can't go wrong. Tender, and cooked to perfection.
Cotes de Porc, Butternut Squash, Special Reserve Caviar, Sauce Robert - a cube of perfectly cooked pork, with sweet squash. You'd think I would want more, but were were starting to feel a bit full by this point.
Anjou Pear, Delice de Bourgogne, Hazelnuts, Smoked Trout Roe - Roe on pear seems unlikely, but this was beautifully executed and the birthday boy greatly enjoyed it despite his misgivings at first sight.
Jersey Milk Ice Cream, Variations of Honey, Kaluga Gold - while I'm usually not a fan of gold since it adds absolutely nothing in terms of flavor, I have to confess that when I broke that honey comb cracker onto the ice cream, and that gold sparkle scattered all over the ice cream in fairy clouds, my inner princess squealed in delight. Sweet and mild, it was a beautiful way to end a very rich decadent dinner.
Huso Dog: Alaskan King Crab Merus, Brioche, Avocado, Mayonnaise, Pickled Mustard Seeds, Beluga di Venezia Caviar - while not on the tasting menu, the chef kindly let us supplement our dinner by adding this (I didn't know when I'd be able to justify the expenditure here again, and didn't want the birthday guy to miss this). You don't need to do this, the tasting menu is absolutely sufficient as a meal, but when we go extra, we go EXTRA. Love, love, love this. I love high brow/low brow mashups, and this did not disappoint. Creamy, sweet, savory...I could live on this and the coddled egg dish, but then I'd have no rent money.
As a bonus, the servers surprised the birthday boy with a "caviar" dessert. Not gonna lie, when they started to bring out the giant tin, I panicked for a second. First thought - I did not order that. Second thought, I can't afford to pay for that much caviar - luckily it was a cleverly disguised crunchy dessert and not a year's salary of caviar.
The servers are extremely amicable, and very knowledgeable about both the dishes, wine pairings, and the contents of the store, and they helped us pick up load of pricey treats for our bougie hangout planned for the next day. The next time we decide to splurge, we'll be back for those Rocquefort crackers, duck foie terrine, and caviar butter! If you can swing it, it's definitely an amazing special occasion dinner spot.
