"Why book? There’s an inimitable charm to Aspen’s Hotel Jerome. From high to rustic fashion, the 135-year-old historical landmark sits in a perfect location for both rest and play. Offering both complementary hotel-to-hill transportation and walkable proximity to designer shops, a stay at the Jerome is as convenient as it is decadent. There is a strong sense of Aspen’s heart in this gem of a hotel—and it’s celebrated by those locals, travelers, and celebrities who àpres, dine, and book stays here. When headed to the American West, Hotel Jerome is where you should summer and winter. Do keep in mind, the property closes in mid April and reopens in late May. Set the Scene Located just three miles from the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, private transportation is available upon request. Right outside, the Jerome driver is hard to miss. They are, most likely, rocking the greatest touch to their staff uniform: an iconic black cowboy hat. Upon arrival, large glass doors open to the lobby desk. A smooth check-in, the desk then kicks off their extraordinary service, offering a welcome complimentary drink. Immediately speaking to both high class, service, and history, the sweet cherry cocktail is curated from a recipe the property secretly served during prohibition. While the first floor is buzzy, with a restaurant to your left, bar right ahead, and café to the right—the layout and design upkeeps the hotel’s overall swanky and cool nature. The backstory Part of the National Register of Historic Places, Hotel Jerome’s history parallels that of Aspen’s. Its brick structure was built by Jerome B. Wheeler in 1889, during the height of Colorado's silver boom— whose vision was to emulate the great European hotels of the time. Setting new standards of innovation, the Jerome prided itself in providing the only bathroom in town open to the public— as well as the first building in town with an elevator, and one of the first buildings west of the Mississpi to have complete electric lighting. Fast forward to the 1950’s: the Jerome became a hotspot for writers, avant-garde artists, and Hollywood stars including Gary Cooper, Lana Turner, Hedy LaMarr and John "Duke" Wayne. With the birth of the Aspen Institute nearby, it was a norm to come across intellectuals and forward-looking entrepreneurs in the hotel’s swimming pool listening to lectures by Mortimer Adler. One of Jerome's hotel lobby bars, J-Bar, is noted as an Old West staple as cowboys and miners once rode their horses through its doors. Even Hunter S. Thompson held court here in the 1960’s and 70’s. Retaining its original Chippendale chinoiserie bar, odes to the Jerome’s history carry through the space in its rugged country leather furniture. The rooms The hotel features 99 guest rooms, from deluxe to presidential. Decked with cashmere curtains and burnished-leather bed frames, the guest rooms offer breathtaking mountain views and Western authenticity. With updated bathrooms and modern amenities, have a self-care moment catered by the eucalyptus and bath crystals left along the bathtub. All thoughtfully designed with custom touches— from minibars designed as leather campaign chests to leather writing tables accentuating the space. Not to mention, the contemporary artwork that hangs in each room is commissioned for the hotel by regional artists. They hang alongside archival pieces reproduced from Aspen Historical Society collections. The Jerome also offers private residential suites, available for nightly or weekly rentals. Food & Beverage The Jerome has been a culinary hub for nearly 100 years. Though iconic restaurants and bars are nearby, guests do not have to leave the property to experience the range, freshness, and attention to detail* of Aspen’s F&B scene. For fine dining, head to Jerome's signature Prospect Restaurant. The space features multiple zones, from intimate banquettes to window-side seating, immersed in mountain views. In November 2023, Prospect debuted a new tasting menu, with the new concept of an “epicurean journey through the diverse microclimates” of Aspen’s terrain. For more casual bites and beverages, head to J-Bar for the ultimate beer and burger special. A buzzy àpres-ski spot, The Living Room, is a hotspot for those guests and locals to meet in a more dim-lit, moody setting. Tip: Sit close to the fireplace with one of their specialty cocktails. In the basement of the historic Aspen Times building sits speakeasy-esque Bad Harriet. With an electric night-time vibe and highly designed cocktails, the space has a unique, cozy, and vintage aura. For the warmer months, sit outside at The Garden for views of Aspen Mountain accompanied by blooming flowers around you. Following a “Garden to Glass” structure, their cocktail program changes with respect to seasonal flowers from the property’s garden itself. Of course, there are also elegant event spaces with sweeping views, including the Grand Ballroom and the Wheeler Room. Spa The Spa Yarrow is an intimate space that offers natural elements and botanicals from The Rocky Mountains in its experiences. Every Jerome guest is offered a personalized and complimentary signature Grounding Botanical Foot Soak. While sipping on an herbal fruit tea, head over to the Element Bar. Here, you can select your own botanicals and essences. If you’re unsure of your preferences, the staff is more-than-readily available to assist. There’s also a heated outdoor pool, as well as access to the fitness center. The neighborhood/area Hotel Jerome is perfectly positioned in the heart of downtown Aspen. A true, prime location for those who are visiting the city, whether for the first or hundredth time. The property is within walking distance of Ajax Mountain, a few minutes away from Aspen Art Museum, as well as the outdoor event space Aspen Ruggerfest, and major designer shops including (but, most definitely not limited to): Hérmes, Ralph Lauren, Gorsuch, and Prada. As the sun sets, all alpine trees light up in twinkled bulbs, and surround the Jerome. Walking back to the property from an evening stroll feels like a warm hug and welcome back home. The service From the front desk to behind the bar, at the Jerome is on point. Say, your baggage is marked as a delayed arrival at the Aspen airport. All you have to do is hand the lobby desk your baggage claim ticket and they will retrieve it for you, as fast as humanly possible. All diverse and friendly faces— the staff is also highly intuitive. Concierge remembers your name and itinerary. The waiters recall previous orders and encourage you to taste something new. If a staff member cannot provide you with the best recommendation, they point you in the right direction of someone who will. All in all, their efforts, style, and professionalism shows— and should be used as a prime example for other hotels entering the luxury space. Accessibility The Jerome is dog-friendly—so much so that the concierge advises on dog-friendly experiences to enjoy Aspen together. When exploring the city on your own, the staff provides dog walking and pet-sitting services. There is a cleaning fee of $100 per stay, and a maximum of two pets allowed. Pet amenities, including a bed, bowl, a toy, and treats, are all available in the suite upon arrival. Service animals, including cats, are permitted—and there are no weight or breed limits. For guests with disabilities, there are multiple accessible routes throughout the hotel. While the concierge can surely assist in last minute requests, it’s recommended to contact the concierge before your stay for tailored assistance." - Jessica Chapel
