"On August 26th, 1970, Jimi Hendrix hosted the grand opening of his state-of-the-art recording studio designed by John Storyk. Made famous by recording sessions with The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Patti Smith, among others, it is the oldest working and thriving recording studio in New York City. Hendrix spent only four weeks recording in Electric Lady before his death, but it has since been used by many notable artists, such as Erykah Badu, Mew, The Roots, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Kiss, The Clash, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Michael Stanley Band, The Strokes, Hall & Oates, U2, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Christina Aguilera, A-ha, D'Angelo, Dan Auerbach and Lana Del Rey. They do not offer tours of the studios, but check out the location for “the experience”." - 345 Design

"In 1968, Jimi Hendrix released his third studio album, Electric Ladyland. That same year, Hendrix and his manager Michael Jeffery purchased a defunct nightclub in New York City that they would transform into Electric Lady Studios, one of the most important recording studios in music history. But the Greenwich Village building had a rich history before any tracks were laid down there. From 1930 to 1967, the basement was home to nightclub called the Village Barn. Upstairs, there was the Generation Club, which had hosted live music acts including B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Sly & the Family Stone, and Jimi Hendrix himself. Though Hendrix originally wanted to keep the building as a nightclub, he was convinced to turn it into a recording studio instead. The architect John Storyk designed the new space, which opened its doors on August 26, 1970. Hendrix recorded his last studio record, “Slow Blues,” the following day. Just a few weeks later, Hendrix died. But along with the musician’s incredible legacy, the studio has lived on. In the 1970s, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Patti Smith, were among the many artists who recorded at Electric Lady Studios. The studio continued to host popular musicians through the 80s and 90s, but faced financial hardship in the early 2000s. Then Lee Foster and Keith Stoltz took over the studio’s operation. Today the studio has been renovated and expanded, and is once again busy producing influential music. Some of the notable artists who have recorded here include Erykah Badu, The Roots, Run DMC, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Lana Del Ray, and Taylor Swift." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

As someone who plays guitar and is a music lover it was very cool stumbling upon this place as I explored the city on my last day there. The greatest city in the world has so much to see and do that someone like me didn't even think of here until I was there. Hopefully I get a chance to go back and possibly get a tour of the place. Still very cool to stand in the same place legends have entered the building!

Historic studio with the obvious Jimi Hendrix link - sure it's amazing inside but unfortunately for the majority we can only take a pic of the logo on the door. Still, nice to say you've seen it.

Very nondescript and a little difficult to find. Hard to believe such an iconic place has no signage or welcoming advertisers. I walked into a place that looked closed only to be greeted by a very nice girl that told me that they don't do tours, no one was there right now and they don't sell T-shirts or any kind of memorabilia. What!? WTH?! I paid a cab to run me from the Statue of Liberty all the way to the Electric Lady studios to see where Jimi Hendrix created and performed his recording magic! What a total buzz kill and let down! Don't go there if you're expecting anything like I was. Hmppppf

Yelp
BEYOND COOL ! Being a life long fan of Jimi Hendrix I had to visit here while my wife and I were on vacation in Manhattan, New York. We had enjoyed a fabulous day seeing lots of cool & awesome stuff and Electric Lady Studios was up next. We jumped in a Lyft near the Chelsea Market and headed over to W 8th St, Greenwich Village about 11.30am on Wednesday Sept 29th. I wasn't sure what to expect but seeing the name Electric Lady Studios on the large glass front was enough to give me goosebumps. I had my facial mask on and decided to try the front door which ( to my surprise ) opened. A young female receptionist ( wearing a facial mask ) planted behind a desk in an alcove with wall adornments around her....said hi to me. I asked if anyone in particular was recording in the studio at present and the young lady's reply was....I'm not permitted to tell you. FAIR ENOUGH ! I asked if I could take a selfie inside and the receptionist said..no problem. I have to say it was a totally cool EXPERIENCE and I could feel the connection to the great JIMI HENDRIX !
