"Since 1789, this wood-paneled architectural gem is the place to find astonishing hand-made candles. In Caza Vellas do Loreto you can find candles ranging from ecclesiastical in all shapes and sizes to a more imaginative selection of candles moulded or sculptured into shapes such as birds, fruits, many of which scented." - Musa WorkLab

"Sure, Caza das Vellas Loreto sells candles, but the shop—one of the oldest in the city—also represents a vibrant part of Portuguese history. It opened in 1789, on the day of the French Revolution, with one mission: to illuminate the dark streets of Lisbon. In today's fully electrified world, the store is as beautiful as ever, thanks to a library-like atmosphere with wood paneling, arched display cases, and a gilded clock." - Alia Akkam

Beautiful candles for correct prices with shapes changing seasonally from classic to more fun coloured shapes. The lady working there is actually very helpful and informative about the production process, she is still very customer oriented but not in a fake enthusiasm way. Nice present as also beautifully wrapped in the shops branded paper. The shop itself is beautiful with tall windows in nice old wood. Also extra love for the amazing giant candle just outside the store.

Lovely candle store with old school interior and very competent service. Not cheap - but well worth the trip. Try the scented candles - they have 10 different choices

A most welcoming shop with delightful staff, a lovely doggy greeting, wonderful stock and a beautiful smell of candles. We visited in September & only had room in our suitcases for small items so we chose some beeswax candles. They smell like no other beeswax candle I have ever had. Wonderful. Only trouble is I want a continous supply. I can’t see a mail order section on the website so I will have to visit Lisbon again! 🕯️

I was so excited to experience this candle shop while visiting Portugal a few weeks ago and I must say, they are definitely not welcoming and certainly do not want your business. We went in, very respectful and in awe of this tiny store and were rudely yelled proclaiming they did not sell candles. Basically told us to leave. So we did and I took pics of the storefront. Looking back on the reviews I read, they are all from 2015, 16 and 17. My guess is that they are unhappy with the increased tourism that has occurred. So, despite its potential to make money, they do not welcome tourists of any kind. My advise, just take a pic of the outside.

A friend of ours in Australia asked us to light a candle for her when she went into labor. We don’t travel with candles, but luckily this shop was in our neighborhood and we happened to stop in. After some research we found that this is the oldest candle shop in Lisbon. It was opened on the day the French Revolution began. That’s old. And the candle? It’s beautiful. And our friend? She had a boy. ;)

They prohibited to take pictures in store. You can see gothic style handmade candles. I bought a candle for my family and it’s about 15 EUROS.

We read this was the oldest candle store in the world originating in 1789. The service was also good and we got some candles for a reasonable price. Place has an aura that I cannot explain, it is one to visit and get some candles
