The 20 Best Restaurants In San Juan, Puerto Rico - San Juan - The Infatuation

"This diner is a relic of Old San Juan. There are Coca-Cola straw dispensers, grayscale pictures of the neighborhood from before reggaeton existed, and servers wearing vintage vests that look like they’ve been around since day one. The old-timey feel adds to the charm of hunkering down to San Juan’s best mallorca sandwiches, or sweet breads filled with things like ham, fried eggs, and cheese. Out of the eight on the menu, there’s no wrong order—even just a buttered one tastes glorious with a café con leche. The star is the ham and American cheese version that’s melted to a perfect gooey consistency and tastes like the offspring of a grilled cheese and powdered donut." - adriana silva, tiffany yannetta, mariana trabanino

"A second professional pan de Mallorca maker, Cafeteria Mallorca, has a more neighborhood feel than Bombonera. Chances are, if you ask around, you’ll get this recommendation from locals. It is the oldest standing diner on the island, and is able to stay open till 3:00 pm purely through word-of-mouth."

Loved it, service is a little slower but it seems like an very older gentleman takes orders & serves the food by himself. Seating is limited and my advice is if you see an open table go ahead and seat yourself, even if the table is not cleaned, the older gentleman will clean it. It seems like he knows who has recently sat down. The food was delicious, my wife & I each got a ham, egg, & cheese mallorca and we both loved them. I also had French fries which were very fresh & hot (so hot I had to wait a little bit for them to cool down). My wife got a papaya shake which she couldn't stop telling me about how good it was and kept offering me some. I recommend this place but get there early because again Seating is limited. The price was very generous, for 2 ham, egg, & cheese mallorca, French fries, a papaya shake, a 12 oz sprite, 2 16 oz dasani bottle water and tax came to a little over $20 . The decor needs some work but the food is so delicious you barely notice, this is a very mom & pop establishment. If you're in Old San Juan or San Juan or heck in Puerto Rico I definitely suggest you go here.

Google
The place has a very casual and laid-back vibe. There’s nothing particularly unique about the atmosphere, and most of the staff are middle-aged, which gives it a homey feel. If you're looking to try a local breakfast in San Juan, this was definitely the best spot for us. I'll share photos of the menu below to give you an idea. We tried the mollarco, and it was very tasty. I had the plain one, and it was perfect with coffee — highly recommended! My husband had the cheese-filled version, which was also good, but we both preferred the plain one. Overall, it’s a nice spot for a simple and authentic local breakfast. Definitely worth a visit!

Google
Mallorca ham, egg, cheese was very tasty. The pork with rice and beans was a good value at 13.95. The service was slow but it is island time, take your time and enjoy. Practice your Spanish before coming, our waiter and person checking us out only spoke Spanish.

Google
Great food, quick service, fair price! Loved the Mallorca and fresh squeezed orange juice. Coffee was delicious and strong (made in a very cool old machine). Would love to go back for pastries! Get there early if you don’t want to wait

WOW! All I have to say. This place was all over my page online so I decided to give it a try. Everything was so fresh I was blown away. The bread was to die for highly recommend. One last thing to add our server was great.

Google
If you're looking to visit Cafeteria Mallorca, the key is to get their early. Seating is limited, and it can be tough to find a place. That said, it is worth planning and making it work. We arrived at around 8:30 AM and got one of few tables left for our family of four. A cruise ship had arrived that day and we watched a pretty steady stream of cruisers wander in from that point forward. Because of the busyness, service was a bit slow. Not really the fault of any of the servers, just the nature of place. But when the food arrived, there was little "happy dances" around our table as everyone tasted what we ordered. We kept it pretty basic by ordering two different sandwiches: Mallorca w/ ham and cheese & Mallorca w/bacon and cheese. They weren't much to look at, but they were some of the tastiest little things. So tasty, in fact, we attempted to remake them in our AirBnB for the next two mornings. An important thing to note - if you're looking for a place to hide from the heat, this won't be the place. Food was great, but it was a bit stuffy sitting there. You acclimate and it doesn't detract from the food, but it isn't the cold blast that you find in other places.

Google
Very local breakfast and love the experience! Mallorca is flaky and love the combination of sweet and savoury, fresh orange juice! Love the diner style feels like local.

Google
Not quite a 5-star experience. The food was underwhelming—most of it tasted like something you could easily make at home, and the Mallorca, “their specialty”, wasn’t something we would go out of our way for. Service was a challenge, with just one server handling a packed restaurant, which made things slow and a bit frustrating. Didn’t help that he wasn’t welcoming and friendly. Part of our order was forgotten and took another 15 minutes to arrive. The space was also really crowded and uncomfortably hot. That said, the prices were very affordable, which is one of the few highlights of the visit.

Yelp
Ambience: down to earth, not fancy, clean Service: good service and we did not have to wait for food . No nonsense basic service in this neighborhood restaurant. It looked like there were a lot of locals there having lunch which is a good sign for me Food: excellent Puerto Rican food. We all liked our dishes. I recommend the Puerto Rican rice and beans. Also, the roasted pork was excellent with a very generous portion of pork. One of my teenaged sons had pork chop with rice and beans and enjoyed it. Pork chop is thin and well done but he really liked it. Other son ordered the skirt steak with french fries and liked that dish. Other adult had chicken with rice and beans which is all mixed together and he enjoyed that. You definitely would return at our next visit to San Juan

Yelp
It is what it is. An old building in old San Juan. This joint is sparse with mismatched chairs. It feels mostly clean, we had to wipe down our tables though. Everyone here is on island time, so don't expect quick service. Our waiter tried to be funny but seemed rather rude. The group ordered their well known mallorcan sandwich, which was just ok. They could have been hotter and actually melted the cheese. I was sick so I had their chicken soup, it was meh... Overall we can check this joint off our list.

Yelp
This is what eating at a Puerto Rican home feels like --it's authentic and local. They're even serving your food on a paper plate like you're at a family potluck! I knew that I wanted the mallorca since this spot is named after the popular dish. Since we came at 1pm, they gave us a lunch menu but I was still able to order the Ham and Cheese Mallorca. We also ordered the Pernil (pork shoulder roast with rice and plantains). Both dishes were super delicious. I loved the combination of the sweet mallorca sandwiching the savoriness of ham and cheese in the middle. This is an absolute must get here! I also really enjoyed the pernil, which is the perfect plate consisting of a bit everything. The pork was tender and the skin was crunchy. Everything is so delicious and affordable. It feels like eating at home here. Although service was a bit slow and the cashier was a bit rude, it's almost part of the charm here.

Yelp
Ancient, crowded place. Little air conditioning. But two eggs with plenty of bacon and coffee and bread for $10.50! Plus terrific, personable service and great ambience. And you can sit as long as you like. A real 'throw back.' My kind of place.
google avatar

Tamika G.

Yelp
Small location but the food was hot and fresh. My husband and I really enjoyed the sweat bread with ham , cheese. We sat at the bar table so our service was quick. The younger gentleman not sure of his name was very friendly and helpful with food choices. The restaurant ambiance gives an old school diner feel which was really nice.

Yelp
Mallorca is definitely a must try if you're in Viejo San Juan in breakfast time. The unique yet familiar Mallorca pastry is the perfect amount of rich and sweet. And you can even add savory and salty things into the mix if you're more adventurous. Despite being a "tourist trap," the prices are very reasonable and it still attracts a local crowd for an authentic experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Here's how much I love this place. Every year when I come to Puerto Rico I don't leave without eating here. The Mallorca sandwiches are the best in the world and the rice and beans also awesome Not only would I insist on people going here I'll will as long as it's around
google avatar

Yelp
soft and pillow soft mallorca bun! Frio cafecito con leche was home and simple. Seating is intimate and theres a separate counter for the bread and the drinks.

Yelp
We were fortunate to visit Mallorca on a day without the cruise ship crowd so we didn't have to wait for a table. The waiter did hand us a lunch/dinner menu at 1pm so I asked for a breakfast (desayuno) menu and he obliged. With a name like Mallorca, you know what we're going to be eating. We ordered two Mallorcas -- one with egg, ham, and cheese and the other with just ham and cheese. Both were served hot and fresh, with the sandwich being both crispy and soft. As you can see, they run a little light with the egg so you really won't miss a thing if you just go with the ham and cheese. The Papaya shake was no great shakes (See what I did there?). It was thick and warm and just kinda uncomfortably mushy and tasteless -- more like someone just ran a few papayas through the squeezer -- and not what we gringos consider a "shake". Service was friendly and this place is in the middle of town and easy to spot. It felt clean and comfortable inside. The Mallorcas were like $6 or so. Can't beat that. We enjoyed our mallorcas so much, we decided to leave PR with our everlasting memory of it still fresh in our minds.

Yelp
Came here to try a local Puerto Rican breakfast and had the mallorca with egg ham and cheese ! It was delicious. A mix of savory and sweet from the powdered sugar, and the texture is that of a flaky pastry. The service here is slow and you have to seat yourself as soon as you see a table available, so keep that in mind. Our server was super nice and funny, and made our experience a lot better!
google avatar

Hector M.

Yelp
Not a fancy breakfast place, but I do like everything they have. Fresh juices, and the Mallorca, of course which is delicious with coffee, and you can order with bacon, or ham and egg.

Michael R.

Yelp
The best coffee in town. And the Mallorca's are fantastic. Every time we stop in San Juan, we head to cafe Mallorca.
google avatar

Giselle G.

Yelp
I loved this place and was so sad to see it was closed on Sunday when I returned. I had the egg cheese and ham Mallorca. It was so delicious and I wish I had some to go. This is a simple place nothing fancy but the service is great; the wait staff is friendly. They move fast and the place has alot of tables. I definitely recommend it and it is a must stop.
google avatar

Yelp
My cousin and I came to this place after seeing some good reviews on Yelp and walking across it on our little walk through Old San Juan. Service was good and place was packed with locals and tourists alike. We sat at the bar and ordered two lemonades, a mallorca with butter, and a mallorca with cheese. It was ALL PERFECT! We watched a guy squeezing the lemons for the lemonade in the back. The lemonade is almost a light slushy/frozen texture and sweet! (Almost too sweet for me but my cousin loved it!) The mallorcas were warm, sweet, soft, and delicious. We ended up ordering two more to go and ate them for breakfast the next morning. I wish we had more time to come back before we left PR! I would recommend this place highly!
google avatar

Carlos V.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. When you come here is for the Mallorca but also the ambiance transport you to a place in the past. The breakfast was very good and reasonably priced. The coffee delicious. This is a must stop while visiting Old San Juan .
google avatar

Elsie C.

Yelp
Serice was extremely slow. Took forever to get my coffee and soda. Mallorca with ham & Swiss took even longer (easily 30mins). The key is to sit at the counter. The counter person was keeping up with the morning pace. Our server was a nice older gentleman... but clearly overwhelmed.
google avatar

Kara C.

Yelp
I almost don't want to share how delicious this place was. It was no frills, old school mallorcas. I will not visit PR again without stopping for breakfast.
google avatar

Farhat K.

Yelp
Solid spot to grab breakfast. I got the namesake aka Mallorca and it def hit. Sweet and salty, it's a good breakfast item. I got it with bacon but didn't really need as much. Nothing fancy about this place, they get the job done. Our server was pretty cool, joking with us which made us like him. A good start to a trip if you're coming to visit and need some quick breakfast after checking in to a nearby hotel/airbnb.
google avatar

Rishmithaa S.

Yelp
Honestly, the only breakfast I truly enjoyed in Puerto Rico. It was the best balance of food, fast and convenience. I also really liked the guava pastry they sell up front. Not entirely a sit down place tho.
google avatar

Yelp
Local. My mom has been bringing me here since I have a sense of knowledge. Definitely eating here brings me that nostalgia of my childhood. When you enter the place is like traveling back in time to an old school cafeteria with a vintage vibe. We always seat at the counter bar. Back in the days we used to know all of the servers but with time, some have retired, some have died, there are only a few remaining. They are the best, the soul and life of the restaurant. Service always on point. If you come here "The Mallorca Sandwich" is the order of the day. BEST IN THE WORLD! I can't even put it into words. Perfect combination between sweet and salty. It has powdered sugar on top and the bread is so fluffy it melts in your mouth. Make sure to order it with butter! They also have a lunch menu that is really good, authentic Puerto Rican food. The frozen lemonade is delicious and refreshing. My mom loves the vainilla flan, is a Puerto Rican dessert made out of evaporated milk, condensed milk, sugar and egg. Also 'pastelillo de guayaba' is delicious. I pray they NEVER close.
google avatar

Lixmarie W.

Yelp
Honestly the only reason why I can here was for a Mallorca sandwich. It's more of a nostalgia spot for me and it makes me feel like I'm home. It's a must do for a traditional sandwich. I did the ham and cheese version and every bite I had just warmed my soul. It's a must do on the island!
google avatar

Yelp
First time in Puerto Rico and first meal here, definitely hit the spot! Great service and atmosphere too.
google avatar

Yelp
Mallorca is a hole in the wall, diner type of place. There were plenty of tourists there, but locals as well. As the name suggests, the Mallorca is featured here. I ordered a Mallorca with ham and cheese. The sandwich was very good. The Mallorca was light, fluffy, and sweet. I got lots of powdered sugar on my black shirt! The issue I had here was the service. After being ignored for several minutes after I entered, I took a spot at the counter. After being ignored for a while, I asked one of the servers if I could sit at the counter and he answered, "Yes lady". It took even longer for the server at the counter to acknowledge me. Finally, he gave me a menu and it took a while for him to take my order. I was so tempted to leave. I needed coffee so badly! The food came quickly and not until after it arrived did I get my coffee. The coffee was strong and bitter. I did not enjoy it. I wanted more milk but my server did not ask oh everything was ok or even look my way. If you want good Mallorca, take your chances on service or get takeout.
google avatar

Crystal B.

Yelp
Stopped in while in port. Sat at the bar. Ordered a Mallorca with ham and cheese and it came covered in powdered sugar - yummy. Also got iced coffees which we enjoyed and a coke to go. This is definitely a local place. The menu is changed regularly if not daily and there were a lot of options. The server was patient with us. The place had a bit of a diner feel. Would return and be more adventurous with food choices.
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
solid local place with some amazing breakfast delicacies. there's a good reason why the line is always stretching out the door. highly recommend their breakfast sandwiches!! service is a bit slow and not the most polite but honestly i reflected after leaving my initial review and considered the fact that my gringo self has some language barriers with the wait staff but ALSO THAT THE (mallorca w ham and cheese) SANDWICH WAS JUST SO GOOD LIKE WAITER U COULDA SPIT ON ME ON TOP OF MAKING ME WAIT 10-20 MINUTES EXTEA AND I WOULD COME BACKKKK
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
All i try at this place was the iconic Mallorca's for breakfast and a coffee, I always say go were the locals go, nothing fancy just true local staple foods thats all.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
We had tried Mallorca's at another bakery and didn't love it, but I really wanted to try this place because I'd heard such good things. We were both so glad - we came here for breakfast and got mallorca sandwiches with ham cheese etc. They were so delicious. It's definitely a casual, chill place - prices are really reasonable and the service is fine. We paid at the counter after we had our delicious mallorcas - I absolutely recommend coming here for wonderful food.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
I got takeout to try the Mallorca bread, which was fluffy and delicious. They accepted card. It seems like a popular breakfast spot for tourists. We got the bread and ate it outside in the plaza where there's public seating.
google avatar

Rebekah M.

Yelp
My absolute first stop when I come home to visit! I take all my friends because there really is no place who makes them quite the same or even remotely as good. The staff is hilarious and always down for a selfie and to talk about how good the food is. I love this honest location and IT's history. I hope it never changes!
google avatar

Nay W.

Yelp
I left a bite. I couldn't eat it all. Old school diner vibes once inside, bakery on the outside. A staff member of my hotel suggested this place. It's right on the opposite end of the block. I had asked for breakfast or brunch, but it was barely 8am so brunch was out. He described it as sweet bread w/ powdered sugar. I suggested a donut comparison & he said that doesn't do it justice & i agree after eating it.
google avatar

Athenapex C.

Yelp
Original photos in restaurant show how it was before. Lots of locals and students grabbing breakfast early before school. Opens early and the best is the Mallorca with ham and cheese for breakfast. Small 8 oz cafe com leche was delicious reminding me of a previous Costa Rica trip. Make it sweet with some sugar as it is strong and bold. Prices affordable.
google avatar

Yelp
Owners/Management: PLEASE consider opening on SUNDAY morning's or afternoons... Everyone would prefer the authentic experience that you alone in Viejo San Juan, can provide. When it comes to a real and legendary spot where generations enjoyed starting their day with café, it's MALLORCA that comes to mind!!!
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick bite to eat on 04/27/2023 & sat at the counter to enjoy a delicious Mallorca sandwich (ham & Swiss Mallorca & a Mallorca sandwich that had bacon on it, both very tasty but the bacon Mallorca was my favorite) We were taken care of by Domingo, who was so friendly & gave great customer service! Service was fast, prices very budget friendly, & it was self seating. Inside had plenty of seating but nothing fancy. Closed on Sundays. Hope this info helps! Till next time, Rebecca

Yelp
Fire breakfast spot. Mostly seems like classic American breakfast (eggs, sausage, pancakes) but also they have a specialty breakfast sandwich which has some Puerto Rican name I don't know which is completely escaping me currently. However, you won't miss it as it is half of the entire menu and it's very good. Our party ordered like two of these sandwiches each and they are a sort of sweet and salty sandwich that has powdered sugar on top of the sandwich with ham/cheese/bacon/sausage/whatever you choose inside. I would probably not get the conventional breakfast items as most of the continental US does it better but it's nice if you are missing that taste while in Puerto Rico. I also got a Pina Colada which was solid as always. Also, the service is very very good. Our waiter was super chatty and energetic and honestly made our experience sick. The restaurant also looks a little dingy from the outside but it's nice inside.
google avatar

Yelp
We were looking for an authentic restaurant to stop and grab lunch as we were wandering Old San Juan, and this was the perfect spot! We stumbled in, and it gave somewhat old school diner vibes. When we wandered in, we were greeted by this enthusiastic man, who we later found was named Domingo. He was super helpful in answering questions about the menu and was definitely chumming it up with many of the patrons as mentioned in other reviews. He was a whole mood, and a great one at that! We had the fried pork and pigeon peas rice as well as the arroz con longaniza, which was a fried rice with a chorizo type sausage. Both were accompanied by fried plantains and were such good choices. I wish we were more in the mood for sweets while we were there to give their namesake mallorcas a try, or even one of the delicious looking pastries in the window, but alas, we were not. After having such a nice lunch and the entertainment of Domingo while we dined, the attitude of the woman at the register was a bit off-putting, but we didn't let it dampen our overall experience. If you are looking for a casual, reasonably priced, pleasant place to eat, definitely give Mallorcas a try!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Best price in the area - ive tried most places the Habichuleas could be better, disregard the waiters they've been doing the same and dealing with non spanish speaking tourists for 20yrs
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Old school charms, the interior hasn't changed in decades. Delicious food, expect Puerto Rican style service, not fast but will come in a timely manner. Our waiter Domingo ( we had him all the previous times we were there ) loves to ham it up with the customers and it is lots of fun to see him in action.
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Delicious mallorca bread!! Definitely one of my favorite. Sooooo soft, fresh, warm, and yummy-sweet. It was not too sweet at all. I had the mallorca with ham and cheese, and the combination was great--savory, sweet, warm, and satiating. We also tried beef empanada, guava pastry, and cream cheese pastry, all of which were good. Coffee with milk was also good. Good service, and cute Puerto Rican ambience (which feels a bit Italian).

Kevin H.

Yelp
Had the best mallorca in all of PR, not to mention affordable. Recommend the classic ham or the bacon. A staple if visiting Old San Juan.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
Arrived early during the week before the cruise ships came in and had a wonderful experience! The Mallorca was to die for. Our server was very personable and doting. 10/10!!
google avatar

Sinchana G.

Yelp
Spacious to sit and eat. We were here for breakfast. The service was quick a very friendly people at service. Had a lovely experience in old San Juan. The scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese was good but the bread along with that was delicious. Loved that piece of fresh bread with butter. Mallorcas were good. We tried cheese and also a guava filling both were delicious. Highly recommend trying this place. Best mallorcas.
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
Quintessential old-school Puerto Rican experience. Simplicity and authenticity at its best. My go-to stop in OSJ for an egg, ham, and cheese Mallorca. The Abuela style Sopa de Pollo (Chicken Soup) is food that feeds my soul.
google avatar

Phylicia H.

Yelp
I need to come back and try a Mallorca with just butter. Stopped by on our very last day before leaving for the airport and ordered the ham and cheese Mallorca. Not a lot of ham and a ton of American cheese that I had to scrape some of it off. The bread was smashed like a panini. The Mallorca itself was delicious and different from others I have tried in the area. I truly think I would've enjoyed this if I had eaten it plain without the toppings. Was not a fan of this combination from this specific place. This bakery is a classic and very popular amongst both locals and tourists that I want to come back and try it again. Loved the old school vibe to this place. Highly recommend giving this place a shot!
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
These Puerto Rican sandwiches are delicious. The traditional bread is slightly sweet, tender and medium dense in the center, crispy and light on the crust. Filled with ham, egg and cheese, dusted with powdered sugar they are wonderfully unique.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Cafe Mallorca is in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico always makes me feel like I'm at my favorite dinner at home. It's the kind of place that a lot of local frequent and they know their names and what they order. Well I don't speak much Spanish but that's the body language I'm reading. I love the ambiance. The service is always quick and friendly. The food is incredible. The main thing they serve is Mallorcas which is a semi sweet bread with confection sugar sprinkled on top. They make they with many options like just butter, American or Swiss cheese, Bacon or Ham. I ordered a Bacon Egg and Cheese because I'm an East Coast Born Guy and that's how we do. They only have a Bacon and Cheese on the menu so I told them to add the egg or "huevo" in my limited Spanish. At least I know that one. It came out incredible as always. This place is super consistent and on point. If your ever in Old San Juan and on the breakfast hunt this should be your 1st, 2nd and last stop. They also have fresh juices, coffee, omelets, pancakes, pastries, etc BUT you MUST TRY the MALLORCAS. It's in the businesses name so you know it's good. Trust me, you will not regret it
google avatar

Diane G.

Yelp
The food is inexpensive and plentiful. I had a Mallorca with cheese and my husband had a breakfast platter (bacon, eggs, toast), we ordered three cafe con leches and two pastries, total costs including tax, $22.00.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
If you are ever in Old San Juan in the morning hours this place is a must stop. Its a low key bakery/diner style restaurant. Nothing fancy but truly authentic Puerto Rican food. Of course their specialty is the mallorca. Everyone in our group ordered on and we all loved it. Its a pressed ham, egg, and cheese sandwich with powdered sugar on top. It tastes absolutely delicious. They also have lots of other breakfast items on the menu including sweet pastries. One of the best parts of our visit was the persn working. I forgot his name but I have seen him in Youtube videos and he is AWESOME. Such a nice and attentive server and had sme great recomendations. He also took some amazing pictures of us without us asking and entertained us. We had a great experience there. If you are deciding on where to get some breakfast in San Juan stop thinking about it and go here!

Melissa M.

Yelp
The lady at the front completely ignored us. There was no air conditioning either. Hot mess altogether
google avatar

Roxy A.

Yelp
No frills, nothing fancy. BUT the best food is found that way! The mallorcas are amazing! I had no idea what these were and then tried them. They were life changing! The restaurant isn't very decorated, it has an old vibe, the waiters are old school (they may start to show attitude if you can't make up your mind) but that's part of the deal. Fell in love with mallorcas here and tried it at other places during my time in San Juan and they all disappointed me.
