The 33 Best Restaurants in Bogotá, Colombia | Eater

"Café Bar Universal sports a sophisticated Caribbean feel thanks to the sunlight that pours in and the potted palm trees that decorate this Chapinero restaurant beloved by locals. The menu is a combination of Mediterranean and Latin food, with especially strong crudo (raw fish dishes) and ceviche, as well as powerfully flavored vegetables and salads. Main courses include pastas, risottos, and dishes designed for sharing, such as a suckling lamb shoulder with hummus. Don’t miss the fried criolla potatoes (a Colombian variety) with parsley. Although there is a fixed menu, weekly specials are written up on a board, according to what’s available at the market." - Liliana López Sorzano

The food was amazing! We had the endive salad and asparagus for appetizers and I had the pesto pasta for my main course. The ingredients we're fresh and the pasta and pesto were homemade. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was beautiful. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Bogotá!

Café Bar Universal offers an enjoyable dinner experience with a nice buzzy ambiance at night, though it is quite dark. The appetizers were delicious, and the sourdough bread was tasty despite having a tight crumb. However, the timing of courses was rushed, with entrees arriving before we finished the appetizers. The menu had several items unavailable, and specials were only mentioned after we had already read the menu and strategized the meal. Wine options by the glass are limited to house wine, which is disappointing. Despite these issues, the food was well-executed, and I would return.

So so delicious. Everytime I come through Bogota I make sure I reserve one evening at Bar Universal. A lovely Spanish wine, slow cooked lamb neck, and the wonderful ceviche to start. 😘

I am overdue on a review of this place. I found this place when I first moved to bogota and fell in love with the space, the ambiance and the food. Do make reservations, cocktail menu is amazing, customer service is always attentive and they complementary. What I most enjoy is that they have their classic dishes but always are offering other options based on the season. I miss it and can’t wait to go back, but I can also recommend their delivery menu which also provides that good service and eclectic options.

Nice environment and ambience. Food was ok with good styles but taste didn’t impress. I had the tomato salad first and it was the best dish of the meal. The crudo was tasting a little fishy (prob due to mackerel?) and the seasoning was too much and salty for a crudo dish; texture was good though. Then I had the grilled prawns and it was good but not sure about the mayo sauce. The seafood pasta was too salty, and the noodles weren’t elastic but a bit “powder-y”. The cocktail (pacific dry) was okay. The non-alcoholic drink Jamaica was actually very delicious. As a seafood restaurant the seafood was the worst part of the meal unfortunately. Portion is on the smaller side so one may need 3-4 dishes.
