Sought out this location based on a strong recommendation and was really happy to have had the chance to check it out. We got a couple of different pour overs and a decaf oat latte. All were really good. They use Subtext coffee which is a very good quality specialty roaster in Toronto. They use a high end grinder which helps ensure good clarity and their pour over method ensures consistency. Definitely recommend!

Cute café, we did not realize that Boxcar Social actually operates 6 locations in the Toronto area. Very nice atmosphere & decoration, typical Toronto retro neo-industrial with old bricks, inside area is wide and airy which we loved. The space is dual use : coffee in the morning, wine at night. We were there for coffee. Prices are about same as everywhere else in Toronto for coffee. Theirs is not the best, on the bitter side. We found another one the day before nearby that we thought was better but no inside area to sit down. Overall a good choice in the area especially if you want to sit down and work on your computer. For coffee, could be better and cheaper. Average coffee place, not memorable, not that bad either. P.S.: please leave a quick ❤️ if you found this review helpful in searching the area, thank you 🙏

A secret pearl up the street. If you are looking for a more discreet go-to spot to work, study, ready, or just disappear for a moment without all the bus around, Boxcar is definitely the place to go. Good atmosphere, friendly staff, and the vibe you’re looking for.

We got the matcha latte and chai latte iced and both tasted watered down. There wasn’t really any taste to it, even with added syrup after receiving it. Chocolate pastry and veggie sandwich were great though!

Wonderfully cozy and inviting right from the start! The pesto sandwich from the lunch menu was surprisingly filling and satisfying, as was Barbet's Wild Card drink. Their coffee was very robust, without any bitter aftertaste. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 The staff was very friendly, engaging, and helpful. We'll definitely be back, and we'll bring our friends! Parking is a challenge, so walk, take a bike or public transit!

We had a nice sandwich for lunch and stayed to work after. The food wasn’t mind blowing; it was a better cafe sandwich though so 5/5. Staff aren’t super friendly, you guys can work on hospitality and inclusion. There is only ONE outlet so bring an outlet extender to make your life easier. The superpower of the place is that you can work in a cafe filled with other young professionals!! They have coffee and wine so you could probably hold quick work meetings here, table is not guaranteed. The outside is pretty as well, there are a couple of benches, they offer blankets for people who sit outside!!!! How nice. Will recommend for work and will come back.

We found occasionally this gem hidden in Riverside and we just loved it! The atmosphere of the place is calm and extremely friendly. The coffee is fantastic and we tried the Brie Sandwich which we highly recommend. We’ll definitely come back to spend some hours listening to good Fado (Portuguese music) and reading by their nice tables.

A great spot on a weekday to do wedding planning with your partner. Super low key and chill ambiance, and when it's warm the patio is so inviting. Staff are all friendly and know their coffee beans - my partner buys beans here every other week to make coffee at home. My favourite sandwich here is the chicken pesto (they do have vegetarian options). Unfortunately the mortadella does not even compare here, so I don't recommend. Their evening vibe is also amazing, wine and whiskey. Great for good conversation and cozy for intimate talks :)

Staff 10/10 friendly and knowledgeable I asked quite a few questions about the menu. I played it safe and got the iced americano. It was not too bad the coffee it was smooth but I personally prefer my coffee to be bold with dark notes. The croissant was delicious and flaky the only thing I wish that it was just a tad a bit warmer other than that it was delicious I appreciate that everything was reasonably priced kudos to them for being able to sustain a business with quality product at an affordable price. For my americano and my croissant together I paid less than $5 most independent coffee shops I go to in Toronto the coffee alone would have cost me almost $4... And the size of the coffee I would say is like a medium it wasn't small but it wasn't large

The venue offers a huge selection of drinks and amazing pastries! It was so good I forgot to take a photo of it - this comment is coming from a non-pastry lover. Their pastries are a little steep in price, but definitely worth the splurge once in a while!

The sandwiches are very delicious and the presentation is very elegant. Quiet, ideal for sitting and working indoors. I didn't like their coffee very much and the service is a bit slow

Wow, got some pastries from here. And the almond croissant is to die for. Haven't had this good of a croissant in a long time. I love venturing the city for croissants and this is a huge hit. Sorry not sorry didn't take a picture quick enough as it got gobbled down. Also there hours here are impeccable. They close at midnight and serve all kinds of drinks. Atmosphere is like a coffee shop that includes bar service it seems

Great place to study! This cafe is very cozy and the staffs are very nice and approachable. Love their latte and their spinach and chickpeas emapanada!

Service was amazing and the atmosphere was great! Visited twice in one night. They had great drink options and the black caviar chips there was I definitely recommend and will return.

I love this place. Each shop is different but they always have great staff and fantastic rich coffee. They have an outdoor patio that is set up really well for social distancing and they have great offerings for beer, wine and even bottles cocktails.

Coffee by the am and worn by the pm! Great spot for young couples and strollers :) Also if you are looking for a first date spot!

Pastries were wonderful with a large selection. Croissants were nice and flaky and they had an assortment of java and drinks to choose from.

My go-to spot for a quick sip of local brews while people watching. There's a good amount of seating available both inside and outside. It's the perfect place for a chill summer vibe.

This is the cutest cafe/bar I've ever been to! It's so cozy inside, intimate and homey. It has a very relaxing and rustic feel with a modern touch. Lighting is very dim so it did look closed from outside but it was surely open. We got the apple cider which was spiked with bourbon and a small mixed charcuterie board. On the small board you get two cheeses, two meats, jam and toast. I wish I remembered the name of the cheese and meat we got but they were all so tasty. I do know one of the meats was some kind of churrizo and the other was a salami I believe. There really isn't much food to choose from besides the charcuterie board, and an almond and olive option. If you're starving definitely eat beforehand or get the large charcuterie board. Service was also pretty quick, and servers were really informative when we had questions about the menu. We usually go to the Starbucks Reserve for a night cap for nights we just feel like relaxing but I'm so glad we tried Boxcar Social. We'll definitely be back!

Servers had attitude, I sat to drink my coffee it was cold and not fresh. I asked if they could remake it, they heated the old cup with steam wand! But Scolded me, told me in future (there won't be) to ask for extra hot coffee .. the coffee was terrible - (couldn't drink it and the little I drank upset my stomach) service terrible - they were very passive aggressive and sarcastic to me. You can see how bad the coffee is just by looking at it ...

coffee, wine or cocktails? this is where you need to head especially if you are with friends and they have different tastes and coffee for those who don't do drinks. sounds about right! i went here tonight and initially i thought the place was closed. the street even though was close to Queen is very quite and the lighting inside the store was very low which gave a different feeling. as soon as you enter - the ambience is what anybody will notice, it is so neat and clean yet very sophisticated baristas who knows what they are doing. they are very knowledgeable as I asked them for what kind of beer is preferred and spoke a bit about drinks. i am giving 5 stars even though i don't see any food item on the menu appetizing, only because their drinks that bloody good. :) love the paper plane cocktail of all so far

Pastries are incredible, Boston cream and the chocolate croissant are incredible. However I find the coffee fairly solid. The staff are incredible, I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a nice coffee shop in Toronto.

Good selection of beer, rye and coffee! The guys working there are awesome and answered all our questions about their beer selection (Beer passport pub crawl). No food, but if you are hungry there are plenty of options nearby - but definitely swing by for a drink..

Best place to be for wine lovers - each of the 4 locations has a different day of the week with half priced wine. Personally, Thursday's at the Riverside location is my favourite! Incredible selections of wines and the server's knowledge on wines is insane! Unfortunately lacking a kitchen, charcuterie boards are great to snack on while wine-ing it up!

I went here on a Wednesday night around 9-10 pm. I had never been to this location before and was really impressed with the atmosphere and friendly service. It's a lot bigger than the Yonge St. location, so there's more room to move around and have a bit of privacy, which is hard to find in Toronto. I causally mentioned to my friend that I might get tea, and BOOM the barista slid the tea menu in front of me. I liked the efficiency. They also brought our drinks to our table and allowed us to settle up later. I like that they serve both coffee/tea and alcoholic drinks, so you can come for casual drinks with friends after work or a Sunday afternoon coffee date/study session. Will definitely come here again.

Interior is really cool, outdoor patio is on a quiet street with nice little side tables and the coffee is amazing. Highly recommend

I was at your establishment in Riverside on the night of December 14th for a party that a friend was having. This was not a private event as there were people there which were not part of our friend group. Ordering drinks from the bar, your Bartenders were automatically charging gratuity at 23%. I challenged the Bartender as this is highway robbery. I did not get my drink served, I had to go to the bar myself and wait. This was not a private event therefore any automatic gratuity should not be charged. The bartenders said this is the standard for an event. I have never heard of 23% in Toronto. The max I have seen is 18%. What justifies this kind of predatory pricing? I wrote an email to the restaurant and the event Planner said this is not something that should have happened and the Bartenders should not be charging customers 23%. Looking at the Yelp reviews, this has happened to another customer which leads me to believe this is the practice of Boxcar Social. I would advise staying away from this establishment since they will gladly rip you off.

Came here for a friend's birthday party, the venue looks great and cozy right in the heart of Riverdale. The reason why I am giving this place only two stars is because after waiting in line at the bar and getting my drink the bartender informed me that i did not have to tip him as the gratuity was already included. When I looked at the bill the automatic gratuity was 23%... I have never seen that high of gratuity included at any restaurants. When I asked the bartender why he is charging us such high gratuity, he simply stated that the reason for it is because we have a large party. From what I have experienced before restaurants usually charge 18% automatic gratuity for parties of 8 or more, which is fair. However, getting charged 23% for regular bar service is outrageous. I would like to note that the venue was not closed for a private event and there were other patrons who were not part of our party. We will definitely not be coming back.

You want coffee go there.One of the best coffee spots in town.I think GTA getting more quality 3rd generation coffee shops. This shop is good example for that.This is 2nd shop under the name of BOX Car SOCIAL.

Boxcar Social is pretty much exactly what I'd want in a coffee shop - knowledgable staff, gorgeous space to relax and enjoy a cuppa and of course delicious coffee. While I love the cozy backyard patio and intimate atmosphere of the original location, this one is just way more spacious and light saturated--making it a prime spot for day time lounging or a serious study session. I ordered a cortado and pistachio croissant. The croissant was effing delicious.. I'm pretty sure I would have ordered a second one if my subconscious didn't tell me otherwise. It was flaky but had this amazing pistachio filling similar to a chocolate almond croissant. Get it if they have it--no regrets (asides from knowing it's an indulgence)!! The cortado was also spot on--perfectly silky and the espresso had no bitter or sour aftertaste. My only complaint about this location is the checkout station was very minimal so I was a bit confused as to where I should place my order at first.

Boxcar social doesn't have problems being number 1. They've set a clear standard that most other's can't meet

Great coffee with dairy free options (I used almond milk). Pleasant environment if you need somewhere to work with fast and reliable internet or if you are lounging with friends. I have not tried any alcoholic drinks yet but they have many options from flights of scotch, wine and beer to cocktails and more that I am eager to try next time I am in the area. Very friendly staff too!

I am frankly not versed with the Boxcar Social concept, having never been to their original uptown Yonge Street location. So when they opened a second location in my neighbourhood, I was like, "oh great, the continued western gentri-invasion of the east end Toronto." And having visited this a few times enough, I feel I got a good sense of what this place is all about. Or not. First and foremost, from the cliche exposed-brick-and-wood-heavy modern industrial decor, to the mural up a wall, the separate coffee tasting bar at one corner, and even the espresso machine with their name brightly glowing, an awful lot of attention has been placed in creating an atmospheric brand that is Boxcar Social. It is designed to attract their target fish of well-monied hip young urban professionals, and no surprise you'll find plenty here chatting or staring their busy lives away on laptops. It's a fine big space to sip some coffee and doze off. But here's what I figured out quickly: Boxcar is not just a business that totally embraces the ambiguous trendy cafe+bar model in the most ambiguous and trendy way possible, it is one hell of a CONNOISSEUR'S cafe/bar, more so than any other place I have been. Imma Pokemon connoisseur and quite a beer connoisseur too. But not a coffee connoisseur at all (heck, it is not really my cup of tea). So it comes at a surprise to learn just how seriously drinks are taken here. They employ staff who can be excessively knowledge of all the coffee and alcohol currently available to serve. I'm sure they can recite a Ph.D dissertation of where in Ethiopia this new batch of beans came from and how it was produced and what micro-level hints of flavours you shall experience, and do offer tastings (apparently the new preferred term for this in the food world is "flights") of various coffees. At least they are not dicks about it if all you want is a simple latte and do not want to turn your coffee decisions/discussions into a Portlandia sketch. People rave about their coffee like it's a celebrity meal, so I suppose it's good as it gets. To be honest, maybe it's a bit intimidating, but it's not so bad and pretentious after all if you are coming in in the daytime and lose yourself in a cup of joe. In the night however when young professionals switch their preferred fuel from caffeine to alcohol, is where Boxcar completely lost me out on their concept. The connoisseur's business mentality extends well to their selection of beers, wines and whiskeys, where they rotate their servings to bring you the best of the world, with such weekly frequency (which is to say what's on tap today may not be there next week) that I wonder how is this possible? Oh, I see, the tiny $8 glass of beer that's not even anywhere near a full proper pint? Gee whiz! Plus I find the personable staff seem less personable at night--the bartenderista (whats else should I call them?) that's bored with handling the 5 only people in the shop gets disinterested after attempting to strike a convo with me and I go on about a baseball game I just attended, doesn't strike me as bearing the same non-snotty vibe I felt in the daytime. The bar part of a cafe+bar schema comes off to me as forever awkward anyhow, and holy cow the well-lit high ceiling space suddenly becomes loud with hipster music and nearly pitch dark. As a bar, atmosphere wise it's quite boring. (I prefer bars with a TV, or at least some food, and this has neither.) Boxcar is pretty expensive. Aside from the high prices for inadequate servings of suds, amongst other things, I noticed hot chocolate is around $4 (I never tried it nor asked what's the story with the choc). And tea--here is what the hell is that? What am I paying for here, the custom-printed glassware? If rates keep gentrifying like that, I might as well retire to Port Union, Scarborough! Moreover, they have very little of anything to eat, which isn't a big deal for me, but may be to some yuppie looking to finish a report over the afternoon here. Point being, Boxcar Social is a go-to place for coffee snobs and the usual cafe vibe if that's your thing (though I prefer other places around the block). But once the sun sets, you'd more likely find me either next door at County Cocktail, or pounding beer flights in my own basement. {TTC: any Queen streetcar to Boulton/Saulter Aves. Alternatively for those on a King car, get off at Broadview and haul ass an eastern block.}

Okay, if we are all honest when we go to places we are expecting more of an experience than just the specific thing we have come for. So, for argument sake, let's take everything out of the equation except for the coffee when talking about Boxcar. Of all the places in Toronto I could argue, and validly so, that this is the best coffee you can get in the city of Toronto. Yes De Mello, Early Bird, Sam James, and others make incredible brew, but this place is for real. Bringing in some of the best Roasters in North America and the world REALLY HELPS. If good coffee starts with the bean, then bringing in incredible beans is a must. They bring in George Howell (Boston), Heart Roasters (Portland), 49th Parallel (Vancouver), The Barn (Berlin), and many others. Not only do they bring them in, but they make the roasters proud. Take The Barn for example. For a roaster that JUST STARTED exporting to North America and being one of the best in the world, they give their beans to Boxcar. Why? Because they make GOOD coffee. Listen, yes, they could do things better other than coffee, but for the coffee, it's GOOD, it's the best. Some may scoff at the prices, but this is how much the coffee costs. If you want a cheaper brew there are many places around the area, but the prices aren't much more than any other good places in the area. That's it! 5 stars for me for the coffee. The best deserves the best rating.

I have been to Boxcar several times but am especially happy to leave a comment today. I had a business meeting at Boxcar this afternoon. It was just great. The seating was plentiful, the acoustics good, and the coffee, tea and baked goods delicious. It has an unpretentious, industrial vibe. The staff was courteous and very accommodating.All in all it was extremely comfortable, pleasant and a great meeting place. Thank you!

Nice atmosphere here. Great open space. Had an ice coffee and it was great. Too bad got there at the wrong time for food. Only a few cookies in the case. Otherwise they serve appetizers but they weren't until 6pm and later while I met up with my friend there at 4pm. Nice coffee place during day then turns more into a bar by night. Will go again at least to try out the apps

Had a beer tasting flight and our bartender was super knowledgeable and patient as he explained each one. We stuck around and also had a latte and espresso and they were SOLID. I love the atmosphere here but I think the high ceilings create an echo, so when there's only 6 people chatting away, it really gets loud. Other than that, I love that this place is staffed with people with knowledge, passion, and really welcome guests with a warm and cozy experience.

My review is for the night/bar version of box car social. Great atmosphere, nice list of craft beers, but a 11-13oz glass is the same price as a 20oz glass in most other bars. That's nearly twice the price. I recognized a few mid-level affordable whisky on the menus for $10-$15 per oz. overpriced IMO. I'll have to come back during the day and check out their coffee. This is a really nice place, I wish it were more affordable.

I've been making weekly visits here since they opened and have enjoyed their excellent coffee, beer, and service. These guys are very knowledgable about their products but not arrogant about it like some other places can be. I don't really feel the need to learn about what the optimal temperature is for a certain type of bean... I just like a well made espresso every now and then. Gorgeous space to spend time in. My preferred cafe compared to others in the hood.

Really cool vibe and the decor is awesome. It's really spacious so you don't feel crammed like in a lot of Toronto bars. Only go here if you like beer or coffee though. My girlfriend ordered a vodka tonic and best they could do was a gin and soda lol.

Disappointed on second visit. First visit had perfect coffee second visit a sloppy pour. Excellent coffee is about consistency I hope this location can keep the bar high.

Really enjoyed my almond milk flat white here! No condescension about "fussy" orders (unlike another cafe, ahem, Demello). Love the very clean and classic looking interior, but especially that it is tucked away on a side street off Queen, so it is like a little secret where you can enjoy good coffee at a beautiful space.

Off the main drag on Queen East, I'd wander into this coffee shop early in the mornings before work or late at night when work ran long and we were jonesing for a caffeine fix to fight the inhuman fatigue. I love Boxcar's concept and the baristas are passionate about coffee; one of the few shops in the city where I can ask specifically for a "jammy" cup and they know what I'm looking for. More than that, though, there's something about this shop's vibe that makes me happy as soon as I walk in the door.

So enjoyed popping into Boxcar last night before dinner. We sat at the bar and the staff were so fun to chat with. They helped us make an informed drink decision and curated the most delicious charcuterie board for us to nibble on. Amazing atmosphere ... So good we had to change or reservation to a later time because we didn't want to leave.

Had there an espresso and a cappuccino in 2 occasions, both were great. Espresso had a nice creama and great taste, cappuccino was at the right temperature and milk was creamy (no foam..). Didn't try the pastry but they look great

This new location is absolutely wonderful ! The décor is modern industrial very sleek and tasteful with the high ceiling and the display of drinks . So much attention was pouring into the details such as the matching chair and stools , the little station tucked in corner for pour over , vintage bikes on the back wall , the subtle blend in of the beautiful art work . I found Its hard not to fall in love with this place . The barista was cheerful and very patient . After I decided to order the cappuccino I glanced at the drinking menu on the counter so I started debating maybe go for one of their selection of pour overs , looking more exotic with good amount of choices. I also inquire about where is the bean from the one they use for espressos ( they have more than 3 kinds of beans for espresso ) with the info I happily decided to go with the cappuccino. He smiled at me and said I could come back to try the pour over ! I am always grateful for people who has patient could tolerant my indecisiveness also I am fond of the informative and the knowledge they passed along . I was more than happy with my cappuccino , adding a bit of honey its complex with balanced acidity

Decided to try their new cafe on my last visit to Toronto. Just as great as their other location. Perfectly pulled espresso and milk temp just right as usual. Great decor, clean and lots of space. Now the only question is, when visiting Toronto, which location to go to?

Best cafe ever. They make great coffees, have alcohol, good music, good atmosphere and great friendly staff!

I love this place. I have been frequenting the Boxcar for just over one month, since I began working just around the corner. It has a great environment- it is both spacious with a lot of natural light and high ceilings, while also providing a very warm and grounded vibe, with deep earth tones reflected in the wooden decor and tables. It's simplicity is accented with colour from a few plants and a mural on one of the walls. There is even a place to put your wet umbrella. The baristas/bartenders are top notch, they are knowledgeable and very friendly. They will not serve you anything that is less than perfect. Their coffee is AMAZING.

I have been here twice so far and both times were great. They have an excellent beer selection with several bottles that I haven't seen in the area before. The place has been beautifully restored with lots of original features.

I think two stars generously covers the experience. The decor is appealing, but the chairs are uncomfortable and insubstantial. Since coffee and tea is what this establishment is all about (during the day), it would seem that the most important thing they can do is strive to serve good coffee and tea. Agreed? Apparently not. My tea bag was put into lukewarm water - unbeknownst to me - and after the addition of milk, it was no longer even warm. The water was so cool that the tea could not 'steep' and was very weak. My friend's americano was equally lukewarm and therefore unpalatable. When I returned the tea to see about the problem, my tea was remade (in the same cup) using the steam function of the espresso machine and I was told that "this is the hottest water I have" like this was a special thing done just for me... My question is: why wouldn't you use the hottest water you have in the first place...and in ever instance?? No one wants dishwater served up as tea or coffee in a CAFE. I won't be back. Neither will my friend.

This place is wonderful--amazing drink selection, high ceilings and they don't cram tons of tables in so even when it fills up it doesn't feel claustrophobic --staff were friendly and knowledgable about the wines --I have only been at night so can't speak to the cafe aspect of the place !
