BAR SUR Tango Show

Intense tango performance with live music. Came to this bar because of Happy Together by Wong Kar Wai was filmed here. To our surprise, the show was very good and exceed my expectations:) Service was attentive as the number of audience was kept to a small group.

I am not quite happy with the 2x price of the food and drinks add to the entrance fee but considering the service and the atmosphere they could offer, the amazing show presented by all the artists, I guess the only way to keep the place running even after pandemic and inflation is to get the price higher and higher. I was quite lucky that the owner visited the place that day I went. I do enjoy every historical detail of the place and the performance. You can feel they coordinated and choreographed the performance with meanings in it. (I like the entering scene and hope the ending will correspond to it somehow) Anyway, I am glad I do it in my last few days in Argentina.

Bar Sur is the true Tango experience we were looking for. The music, dancing and singing were excellent. It’s intimate and oozes with charm, and the minute you step inside, you feel like you’ve walked into 1930’s Argentina. I highly recommend it.

Bar Sur featured on Anthony Bourdain's episode on Buenos Aires in 2018 which is a must see and available on YouTube was why I came here and is probably what I will remember the most about my time in this great city. If you want to see authentic tango in the right setting (10 minutes from La Boca the port for that is where tango came from) support this institution of historical importance and do not get blindsided by the bigger shows.

I had the most incredible time at Bar Sur during my first tango show. The atmosphere was intimate, with a small audience that made it feel personal and immersive. The dancers were mesmerizing, pulling me into the world of tango with their slick, passionate moves. The live musicians were equally captivating, playing traditional Argentine tunes that filled the room with energy. For a first-timer, I was enthralled from start to finish. It wasn’t just a performance—it felt like being part of something timeless and authentic. A truly unforgettable experience! One of best nights of my life !

This was a top highlight of our trip. I would return to the city just to see this show again. Sure, there are dozens of tango shows in Buenos Aires; but where else can you witness spectacular tango in such an intimate setting, with the performers inches from your table? It was as if we were enjoying an evening at a tango bar in a bygone era. And indeed, Bar Sur is from a bygone era, as it is one of the city’s ‘bares notables’. The talent of the dancers, singers and musicians was top notch. We also felt very well taken care of by the staff while we were there. It was truly a night to remember.

Overall, this was an incredible dining and Tango show experience. The food, service, the live musicians, the show and ambiance were all top-notch. I will be back! And I highly recommend this place!
