"You would be forgiven for walking straight past this 18th-century block of self-catered apartments on a bustling street in Baixa: there’s no reception desk or sign above the door, just a discreet doorbell. Once inside, a sweeping staircase leads to 13 airy apartments, each of which is individually styled and and inspired by a famous Lisbon garden: you’ll note the references in the floral Josef Frank wallpapers, framed photographs and cut flowers. Eclectic vintage furniture completes the homely look. Owner and landscape architect Jesús Moraime was keen to ensure that the rooms were furnished with regional products: cabinets are stacked with Bordallo Pinheiro crockery, blankets are sourced from the Serra da Estrela region and rugs come from Alentejo. Every day, staff restock the fridge with fresh breakfast items such as yoghurt, fruit and cake."

Baixa House, Lisbon, Portugal - Explore & Book

"You wouldn’t spot Baixa House without knowing it was there: tucked away on one of Lisbon’s cobbled streets, there’s no sign to give away its location. My taxi driver hadn’t even heard of it, but that's sure to change as word gets out - this place is a real gem. A stunning 18th-century building, its grand staircase is lined with traditional Portuguese tiles and its hallways are cool, white havens. Owner Jesus spent years meticulously restoring the building's original features, and scouring vintage shops in Portugal and Spain for quirky furnishings for the 13 apartments. The result is a fantastic mismatch of old and new - each high-ceilinged room is flooded with light and beautifully, quirkily decorated, with everything you could need for a short or long stay.It is a perfect base for exploring Lisbon. 'Baixa' means downtown and there are buzzy restaurants, bars and boutiques all around - and the classic Number 28 tram rattles right past your doorstep. It's a 5-minute walk to the Alfama (with some of the city's only remaining buildings dating from before the earthquake of 1755), and close to Rossio Square, Castelo São Jorge and the trendy Chiado and Bairro Alto districts. Friendly staff, on-hand if you need them, are the icing on the cake. Highs Light, airy and spacious apartments, each uniquely decorated. Most have French windows so you can let the breeze flow throughBreakfast, a homemade cake and daily cleaning are included in the price, which is unusual for city self-catering. Fresh bread is delivered to your door every morning; everything else waits in your fridgeGreat for solo travellers, couples, friends and families (particularly with slightly older, well-behaved kids)A small helpful team who make you feel instantly welcome and provide recommendations for things to do. There is a small office, manned most of the timeExcellent kitchens with all the kit plus basic ingredients Lows The street-facing apartments are next to a busy road and it can get noisy late at night with street cleaning /recycling, but the lower floor apartments have double-glazingNoise can travel between apartments as they are not sound-proofed, but we hardly heard the neighbours during our stay This is the flattest part of Lisbon so it’s a climb to most other areas of the city unless you jump on a tram/bus; local transport links are excellentFans but no air con - not ideal in high summer You'll need to request a TV if you want one; they don't come as standard, though they are free to borrow" - Daisy Gell

A Perfect Home Away from Home in Lisbon Baixa House was an absolute delight. The apartment was beautifully decorated, spacious, and incredibly cozy – the kind of place where you instantly feel at home. Every detail was so well thought out and carefully designed, making the space not only stylish but also very functional. The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Lisbon. From the doorstep, you can easily walk to all the main attractions, great restaurants, and charming streets. Yet, inside the apartment, it feels calm and relaxing – the perfect balance between being in the city center and having your own peaceful retreat. The overall vibe of Baixa House is just wonderful. It’s warm, welcoming, and has that unique charm that makes your stay memorable. Truly one of the best accommodation experiences we’ve had in Lisbon – highly recommended!

The place is absolutely calming and well balanced with furnitures and cultural touch. I was surprised how much of a home feeling it gave me, even though I stayed for just 1 night. The interior design brings such a peaceful and home-like atmosphere right in the middle of the city, in the well-known touristic square of Baixa. Around the building, you’ll find amazing accommodations and great activities to enjoy as well. If you are coming to Lisbon for the first time, this is definitely the first hotel guest house you should book to ensure a smooth and cozy living stay, while being perfectly connected with all the city.

The best thing about Baixa House is its incredibly central location — it’s super close to all major transport links. On top of that, the management was wonderfully kind and helpful. Our room was on the first floor and facing the main street, so it was a bit noisy, but with earplugs, it wasn’t a problem. If you’re sensitive to noise, you might prefer a room on a higher floor or one that faces the back. The place is beautifully decorated, and items like soap and towels are thoughtfully selected. We’ll definitely choose to stay here again on our next trip to Lisbon.

We stayed here for a few nights while visiting Lisbon. It was very comfortable and the small breakfast each morning was a nice touch. It's a little expensive but it was worth it

Absolutely loved our stay at Baixa House! The apartment was beautifully renovated with lots of character and charm. Daily breakfast was generous and delicious, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the cleaners kept everything spotless. It truly felt like a home away from home. Can’t wait to visit Masserlos House in Porto next!

My mom and I stayed at Baixia House in the Campo Grande room in Lisbon for 5 nights and absolutely loved our experience. The staff were kind and helpful, the space was beautiful—exactly like the photos—and very comfortable. The breakfast and daily cleaning service were such a treat. We were so happy to call this place home during our stay.

Over the Christmas holidays, my extended family (of 10 adults and 2 kids) stayed at Baixa House (we rented 4 apartments). We experienced phenomenal service and would not hesitate to recommend to others. Here are the highlights: 1. Beautiful service apartments with a rustic charm: Yes, some are “older looking than others” and some may be a bit more dated than what the pictures showed but the apartments were perfect. If we wanted a modern place, then we would have booked a hotel. 2. Breakfasts: Incredible. An extremely generous spread of food. They give you an order sheet so you can specify which items you would like included for the next days breakfast. We always had leftovers. Also, they accommodated a request for oat milk for one of our guests. 3. Central location: this is why we picked the service apartments in the first place! Few blocks from the water, you are close to the centre of Baixa without the noise of the tourists and Lisbon is extremely walkable with a good pair of shoes. Yes, we are above the tram lines but running a floor fan during the night made a world of a difference in blocking out the noise! 4. Extremely responsive: I received many emails leading up to our check-ins. They were accommodating of our early and late check-ins. They have a WhatsApp number which was very handy when we needed to reach them. 5. The “b” apartments come with dishwashers - no need to do dishes by hand and all our apartments were equipped with a combined washer/dryer. A huge plus! I’m writing this post in the middle of our 10 day stay and I have no doubt that the rest of our stay will be fantastic! Thank you Baixa House for making our family reunion over Christmas one to remember!

A beautiful apartment but we would have really appreciated transparency with regards to the lack of air conditioning, especially when making bookings in the midst of August as we did. Sadly, we have had a few nights of very uncomfortable sleep due to the heat (even with fans provided and windows open). In order for this hotel to survive, they do need to find a solution to this problem because it has been very uncomfortable. With global warming and increased tourism to Lisbon, and a lot of amazing competition in the neighbourhood - they need to sort this out ASAP. Otherwise - lovely staff and nice hospitality. Sadly the lack of AC really lets this place down and is a deal breaker for coming back and/or recommending this place.
