At Martha's Vineyard's Back Door Donuts, treat yourself to late-night indulgence with freshly baked pastries and apple fritters served from a cheeky purple back door.
"It’s worth the ferry ride for these piping-hot doughnuts. The doughnuts scent the night air for those arriving to Oak Bluffs late — and they’re sold via the bakery’s purple back door to those wandering by from 7 p.m. to midnight. By day, enter through the front for coffee and doughnuts. The shop does the classics very well (honey dipped, cinnamon sugar, and chocolate) and always offers a few curveballs. The apple fritter is the size of a dodgeball. Note: Back Door Donuts closes during the off-season on Martha’s Vineyard, but the team is operating a year-round pop-up in Boston with late-night service at Loretta’s Last Call near Fenway Park." - Eater Staff
"As a teenager, after nights of dancing to Parliament Funkadelic at house parties in Oak Bluffs, we’d regularly make a stop at the Old Stone Bakery’s back door."
"The origin story of Back Door Donuts is that people would stop by Old Stone Bakery late at night (and maybe after a few drinks) and beg for donuts. So in 2018, they opened this late-night donut spot. Everything is very good, but the apple fritters are the best thing they do. Plus, the line outside the shop is its own kind of fun hang, with everyone full of fresh seafood and booze. " - tanya edwards

"Back Door Donuts, a day trip-worthy doughnut shop located on Martha’s Vineyard, is bringing its boulder-sized apple fritters to the country-themed bar and restaurant Loretta’s Last Call in Fenway starting on March 15. For the uninitiated: At the Vineyard outpost, the Back Door team sells doughnuts and coffee at the Front Bakery Cafe starting in the early morning, and then transitions into a speakeasy-style setup at night where customers can buy doughnuts from its purple-painted back door until 11 p.m. The Fenway pop-up will be a similar late-night operation. Customers can snag sweets including Back Door’s famous fritters, honey dipped, and buttermilk glazed doughnuts from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. nightly, according to a press rep, and the first 100 people in line on March 15 will get a free doughnut on their next visit. The pop-up doesn’t have a set end date yet." - Erika Adams
